The Language of News Media (Language in Society)
ASIN: 041530394X |
Book Description
This is a completely updated and expanded second edition of Language, Society and Power. Lively and accessible, it looks at the ways in which language functions, how it influences thought and how it varies according to age, ethnicity, class and gender. How can a language reflect the status of children and older people? Do men and women talk differently? How can our use of language mark our ethnic identity? The book also looks at language use in politics and the media and examines how language affects and constructs our identities, exploring notions of correctness and attitudes towards language use.
This second edition has been fully updated to include recent developments in theory and research and offers the following features: *new, relevant and engaging examples drawn from everyday life: conversation transcripts, novels including Ian McEwan's Atonement, television and the internet
*new activities designed to give students a real understanding of the area
*an international perspective with examples from the world's press, including The Washington Post, the Daily Mail and the New Zealand Listener
*updated and expanded further reading sections and glossary.
Language Society and Power remains an essential introductory text for students of English language and linguistics, and will also be of use to students of media, communication, cultural studies, sociology and psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Great Explanation; a bit polluted by modern society.......2000-11-10
Clarity and logical explanation of the modern theories of language and linguistics is this book's strength. I exhaustively covered this book because of a college class that it was required for. Much about language that is basic for moving on from elementary linguistics is covered in this book.
Contemporary classic theories of language are included (ie Saussure's theories, Sapir-Whorf, etc) which sets the reader off into a fascinating discovery of how language promotes or inhibits one's power in modern society.
In such contemporary issues as political correctness and the Standard American English debate, a slightly more leftist view is employed in the writing of the book than I would've preferred, but nonetheless, there is a suffice and clear explanation of the information throughout.
A quality book. Check it out!

wonderful introduction to an exciting area.......2002-01-15
I feel compelled to provide an American perspective of this work. A newcomer to the field of sociolinguistics, I found the book both fascinating and enticing; I now have no doubt that I will pursue linguistics in college next year. Dialectical differences within such nations as Switzerland, Luxembourg and Norway are delved into and discussed not exclusively in a linguistic context, but in social and political contexts as well. Trudgull's book is refreshingly absent of the ponderous esoteric jargon that so often detracts from "niche" works, and which effectively prevent "neophytes" from enjoying the subject. Well done.
intrest toward sociolinguistics.......1999-10-16
I'm Japanese high school student. Having been intrested in linguistics fora long time, I decided to try this book. It was pretty dificul for me in terms of words and vocablary but this book let ma have an intrest toward sociolinguistics. This book contains a lot of examples. ( I couldn't fugure out all of them, though. ) And made me realize we never can say "correct English" or somewhat. If there is anyone who is intrested in linguistics, please giveme a line. I hope to share our knowledge anf the way of thought.

Book Description
Forensic Linguistics is an introduction to the fascinating interface between language and the law. Examining the nature of legal language, the first half of the book demonstrates that the law is an overwhelmingly linguistic institution, since laws are coded in language and the concepts that are used to construct the law are accessible only through language. The book also explores the language of contracts and the language of legal processes, such as court cases, police investigations and the management of prisoners. The second half of Forensic Linguistics is more socially applied. It discusses the difficulty of understanding legal language, and linguistic sources of disadvantage before the law, particularly for ethnic minorities, children and abused women. The volume then considers legislation on language, including language crimes, as well as linguistic evidence.

Politics of Language in the Spanish-Speaking World (The Politics of Language)
ASIN: 0415129834 |
Book Description
b /b b i The Spanish Speaking World /i /b explores a wide range of sociolinguistic issues relating to the Spanish language and its role in societies around the world. br br Clare Mar-Molinero begins with a discussion of the position of Spanish as a world language, giving an historical account of its development and dominance. She continues with an examination of social and regional variation in Spanish, and investigates dialects, language attitudes, and style and register, particularly in the media. She also questions the relationship between gender and language. The book ends with a focus on current issues, particularly those arising from language policies and legislation, especially in the education system. Written for readers with a practical knowledge of Spanish, the book is informative and practical, encouraging readers to think for themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Mar-Molinero's Book.......2006-11-10
This book was used for a graduate course in Spanish Sociolinguistics and it was a good book. She brings up some very interesting points and it's easy to read and comprehend. It is a good start for discussing these issues. The only downfall to this book is it's very Eurocentric and there is not enough focus on ALL Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish speaking 'world'?.......2002-04-05
The title of the book is very engaging, unfortunately it does not deliver what it would appear to promise. The topics raised in the table of contents are all interesting, but the book does not cover any of them really in-depth. Some of the activities are very nice, however.
What bothers me most about this book is its neve to claim to treat the Spanish speaking 'world' and only dedicate a couple of pages to anywhere outside of Spain. I find that even the coverage of the linguistic diversity within Spain is weak. The book follows a traditional division of language and dialect (something I spend an entire semester trying to teach my students is artificial) and then does not even bring up the fact that more and more the government is trying to revitalize these tongues and are officially recognizing them as 'languages'.
If you are a college professor looking to use this book in an undergraduate course, I would use this book to get ideas on how to structure the course, and perhaps for some interesting activities, but I think that there are other sources that could provide better content.
Not bad, but could be much better.......2000-09-22
I have used this book in a college-level class on Spanish linguistics, primarily for Spanish majors.
This book definitely fills a void. There doesn't seem to be anything like it available at the moment that introduces undergraduates to the language situation in the "Spanish-speaking world" as well as to some of the history of how it got this way.
The book, however, is less than perfect. Much of the treatment of the topics is way too superficial, even for undergraduates. The book could have been quite a bit longer and not have been too long. The book is also very uneven with regards to amount and quality of coverage. One does get the impression that the author does not have extensive background in the discipline.
Other things are annoying as well. Such as, for example, quite a few of the lengthy quotes which assume a fairly high command of Spanish seemed unnecessary (or should have been translated). Finally -- I just have to say this -- everyone who read the book was extremely annoyed by the constant use of whilst, and other British-isms.
I do hope that a second edition of this book is in the works. Or that someone else publishes something better along the same lines. Then again, there is also a great need for not excessively technical books (undergraduate level) on Spanish phonetics and phonology and on the history of Spanish. I just can't believe that there isn't a market for them.

Book Description
Why have 1500 separate languages developed in the Pacific region? Why do Danes understand Norwegians better than Norwegians understand Danish? Is Ebonics a language or a dialect? Linguistics tends to ignore the relationship between languages and the societies in which they are spoken, while sociology generally overlooks the role of language in the constitution of society. In this book Suzanne Romaine provides a clear, lively, and accessible introduction to the field of sociolinguistics and emphasizes the constant interaction between society and language, discussing both traditional and recent issues including: language and social class, language and gender, language and education, and pidgins and creoles. The text shows how our linguistic choices are motivated by social factors, and how certain ways of speaking come to be vested with symbolic value and includes examples drawing on studies of cultures and languages all over the world. This new edition incorporates new material on current issues in the study of gender as well as other topics such as the linguistic dimension to the ethnic conflict in the Balkans, and the controversy over Ebonics in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
A good Introduction.......2005-06-24
Suzanne Romaine takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of the field of sociolinguistics. The role of society in language use is examined from many different angles. Since this is an introductory book, it doesn't go into each subfield very deeply, but it does give you a broad overview of what we study in this field. I thought that the author paid particular attention to the issues of pidgins and creoles, and gender issues in language use. This would be useful for beginners in sociolinguistics and for those interested in the two specializations mentioned above.
A good introduction to socio-linguistics........2005-03-20
What is sociolinguistics? What does it aim to do? and in What respects does it diverge from other theoretical linguistic approaches?-if you have questions like these, there is every reason why you should buy and read this book. This inspiring introduction to a relatively new field of linguistics explains clearly and in a plain style why that field was born, what ends it can serve and what attitudes it takes toward lanaguge science; insomuch that those who has just started to take interest in the field of linguistics have no difficulty understanding it; but, on the contrary, can enjoy reading it.
Whether you can agree with the author's ideas, whether you find her arguments satisfying, I know not; but one thing is certain: regardless of whether you are for or againts this book's assertions, reading this book can never be a waste of time.
Interesting thoughts by Suzanne herself.......2005-02-15
Though it is difficult to define the field of sociolinguistics, the author succeeds to resume the complicated topics. Professior Ossan recommended it in favor of the sophistication and the usefulness. G-head, a friend of mine, said to me "The sentence structures in this book are a little bit difficult to non-native speaker", which I can agree. His opinion probably hints this book is suggestive in terms of not just its contents but also its readability.
Very accessible and concise.......2004-03-31
This was my first "read" in the area of sociolinguistic, though after working my way through texts in other linguistic areas I can say that this was the most enjoyable and understandable of the lot. Plenty of great examples provided, and the chapter on language and gender particulary compelling. It's good enough to make you want to take up sociolinguistics as a career.
A good introduction.......2001-01-26
This is a concise book on sociolinguistics. It does not dwell excessively on methodology or theoretical perspectives but offers through many examples, some presented via tables and figures, a taste of the kinds of issues sociolinguists struggle with, as well as some of their major findings. As a specialist in the Papua New Ginean languages, Romaine naturally makes good use of non-Western examples like Tok Pisin to illustrate such problems as language/dialect, language contact, language hierarchy, though she also draws examples from the Scandanavian languages as well as research on the social dialects of English. The book is highly readable even to a non-linguist like me. It probably does not cover all the conceivable major topics, but what it covers it covers well. The annotated bibliography at the end of each chapter is a useful guide to further reading.
My only complaint regards her non-critical citation of the much-repeated "fact" (to illustrate the language/dialect problem) that speakers of mutually unintelligible Chinese languages share a common writing system. This of course is true only for the classical literary (written) language, not the vernacular varieties.

Book Description
The Ethnography of Communication explores how and why language is used, and how its use varies in different cultures. In this now standard introduction to the subject, Muriel Saville-Troike presents the essential terms and concepts introduced and developed by Dell Hymes and others, and surveys the most important findings and applications of their work. Drawing on insights from social anthropology and psycholinguistics and using examples from many languages and cultures, she builds a model that includes communication within the overall framework of cultural competence. This third edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the substantial contributions made in recent years to the development and application of the subject. It includes two completely new chapters on contrasts in patterns of communication and on politeness, power, and politics. The book now incorporates an even broader range of examples and illustrations for analyzing the patterns of communicative phenomena in the languages of the world.

Book Description
This is a textbook for courses in language and culture for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students. It starts from a theoretical viewpoint of both language and culture as conventionalized forms of situated practice and uses this as a unifying framework to cover the full range of topics normally treated under the rubric of language and culture. An important orientating strand in the book is the tension between innatist or universalist versus relativist approaches to anthropological linguistic phenomena: various topics like kinship, color, classifiers or the effects of literacy are discussed from these contrasting viewpoints to provide a richer understanding of their implications. The book is organized so that in a modular way individual instructors may use or omit sections to fit into their overall teaching design.
Customer Reviews:
A superb textbook within its area.......1998-11-04
A comprehensive introduction to key concepts in the area of anthropological lingusitics. It treats many of those classical questions that always arise once language as language use and its role in society and culture is discussed. The text is comprehensive and the words flow smoothly.
