4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-24

Simons is certainly an environmentalist, and I love that about him. This is the first text book I have enjoyed reading. He makes excellent points, though it isn't all totally workable. Generally a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of landscape architecture.......2007-06-05

This is really THE seminal instroductory book to landscape architecture. It's not really specific enough to be a true reference book, but it covers such a vast range of topics that it would be unrealistic to expect it to be. Instead, Simonds did a fantastic job of summarizing an amazingly broad field one subject at a time. Still, it is not so broad that the reader will fail to see the trees through the forest. It does include a lot of very helpful illustrations and explanations about such topics as spatial relationships and how they create different environments (and subsequently a particular design might be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circumstances). But that is just one small sample of the kind of valuable lessons this book is filled with. I often start with this book when I approach a subject that is new to me because it gets me on the right track. In that sense, it's not just for beginners. And the 4th edition contains much-needed updates of the outdated photographs that are in the 3rd edition.

Cool idea BUT, this isn't really worth it. I bought it for myself but would never use it. On a positive note my 14 yr old liked it. I wouldn't recommend it for an adult.

Many non-fiction books contain practical information, but have you ever seen one that you can actually use? That is, one that you can cut, fold, and consult for luggage tags to bookmarks, zip codes to area codes, signs to table coasters, a chessboard (with pieces!) to a vision chart? Yes, it slices...it dices...it's a new book by Melissa Heckscher called Use This Book! - The Only Book You'll Ever Need.

Go to page 193 and fold together a drinking cup. Do you want to learn how to type? Use the coded keyboard graphic on page 73 if no computer or typewriter is available. Did you just park in a spot where the meter is broken? Cut out one of the signs on page 27 to alert parking enforcement officials. Did you break down on the side of the road? Leave a "Went for Help" sign on your dashboard. Need a thank you note? One is only a scissor-cut away on page 87. Is it sweltering out today? Open to page 197 and build yourself a cooling fan. Forget your watch? Page 157 shows you how to make-and read-a sundial. Were you invited to an impromptu masquerade party? No need to fear...just turn to page 207 and cut out a dashing blue eye mask!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go make a picture frame out of the back cover of the book...

Book Description

Bamboo's amazing versatility, strength, workability, and beauty have given it a longer and more varied role in human culture than any other plant known to humankind. This acclaimed sourcebook details the myriad ways in which this extraordinary plant is now used and presents many options for its use in the future. A bounty of facts and lore, the profusely illustrated book includes:
Bamboo cultivation - how to grow, maintain, and harvest bamboo
Crafts and constructions using bamboo: floors, fences, papers, playgrounds (built by kids!), swings, and treehouses
A "whole bamboo catalog" of tools and other artifacts made from bamboo - acupuncture needles, blowguns, bridges, kites, ships, violins, windmills, and a thousand other bamboo things
The seemingly endless variety of shelter applications, including lamination, "plybamboo," reinforced concrete, and earthquake-zone construction
Bamboo and the arts - a bamboo orchestra, the role of bamboo in the ancient "friendship ceremony," Sumi-e painting, and the depiction of the quivering leaf of the bamboo plant
An astonishing compendium of bamboo science, covering more than 1,200 species from 4 inches to 100 feet high (one species has been known to grow 4 feet in 24 hours)

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginning.......2007-01-23

In a World in which only three countries have doubled their forest resources while the rest of the nations are working on depleting theirs; a global crisis waiting to happen because of our irresponsible handling of our natural resources, bamboo offers a solution that could definately take us back to a healthy equilibrium. This book gives a glance of its many uses and benefits. Anybody interested in life has got to take a dive into this amazing research. This book is literally, "the top of the iceberg."

4 out of 5 stars So much to learn, yet still not done with it!.......2004-12-11

I bought this book awhile ago. . . .and unfortunately, have enough going on that I can't just sit down and read it beginning to end, but already I know a LOT more about a plant I've always been fascinated with. Lots of definitions, and pictures, and illustrations. If there's anything that could be considered a detraction, there's maybe TOO much information on the plant and its uses.

a thoroughly great book to add to a collection for anyone into herbal knowledge or lore, interested in plants, or wants to just know more about bamboo.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on bamboo.................2004-02-23

Written by the one of the few people in the world qualified to produce a monograph on bamboo, it is as comprehensive as it gets. David Farrelly has spent more than a decade planting, harvesting, and building with bamboo in Mexico, Nicaragua, and the United States. If you are only interested in the growing of bamboo as an ornamental, then this book may not be exactly what you expect, but it still serves up more information on bamboo growing, propagation and care, and bamboo species and description then any other currently available books on bamboo. Don't expect grossy pictures either, but line drawings and old black and white photographs somehow seems to fit well in this book. Grossy pictures would have been out of place here. What really makes this book a must read is the other non-botanical, non-horticultural information on bamboo that the book includes - it's history, it's multiple of uses, it's interaction with mankind through the ages.

If you are into bamboo beyond it's aesthietics, this is a "must read". If you are only into ornamental bamboos, this is still a good reference, and reading it will change your respect for what must be truly the most useful of all plants on planet earth.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book first if you are new to bamboo!.......2003-01-06

This was the first book I read about bamboo many years ago when I first started planting bamboo. I guess the best way to describe it would be to call it "The Last Whole Earth Catalog of Bamboo". It covers all aspects of bamboo, facts and fiction, reality and myth. This book is for the true lover of bamboo.

4 out of 5 stars Bamboo Science, Philosophy, Opinion and Lore.......2000-08-12

When I first read "The Book of Bamboo" many years ago, I thought it was brilliantly researched but simply too eccentric in organization and style to be representative of mainstream thought on the subject. Despite the wealth of information it contains, I hesitated to recommend it to people for fear its intensity would put people off rather than draw them in. However, after several years of growing bamboo in coastal northern California, I recently picked it up again and instantly recognized it for the classic it is. Fewer than 1 percent of 1 percent of all non-fiction books published are ever republished after they go out of print, especially by a prestigious national firm with major editorial capabilities. See for yourself why David Farrelly's "The Book of Bamboo" is one of those rare, wonderful books worthy of such investment and respect.

Book Description

Consulting oracles used to be difficult and dangerous. You had to make a pilgrimage plagued with hardship, trudging through the desert to a holy place or person. Or kill a calf to read its liver or a bird to read its entrails. Or study for years to read ink dropped in water. Who has the time? Traditional methods just aren't convenient today. What's a divine wonderer to do? Funny you should ask.

The Book of Ordinary Oracles, Lon Milo DuQuette shows us how to use items lying around the house--from pocket change to chopsticks--to divine answer to everyday questions. He also tells us how to ask the right question and interpret the answer. The tools he provides will make consulting oracles as easy as reaching into your pocket or cupboard. Can one use channel surfing as an oracle? You bet! DuQuette's anecdotes illustrate various divination techniques. Laugh your way to wisdom while learning new ways to look at the I Ching and how to read tarot cards for yourself.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-02-26

Duquette has always been about approaching a serious subject with a sense of humor. Though books on witchcraft have been banned on religious grounds, this one broadens the horozins of the initiate of the arcane to go back to reality after years of pouring over more intimidating tomes of ritual black magic. While not typical of the author's menacing, evil style, this one goes to show he's a real person just like the rest of us, big star or not.

5 out of 5 stars Fortune Telling for Dummies & other Complete Idiots?.......2006-01-09

Not exactly!

Mr. Duquette outlines, with his usual humorous, no-nonsense approach, just how divination works, and how we can make it work for ourselves. There are loads of ideas here, for those that like to be crafty, how to make your own divination devices, as well as how to read the oracular messages in the world around us.

5 out of 5 stars Divination without tears........2005-03-16

Like all of Mr. DuQuette's books, this one gives important information on a serious subject without being solemn. His writing style is light and humorous and is a refreshing change from the boring, high minded writings on occultism that you usually see. If you are interested in a quick and dirty guide to divination, both in theory and practice, this is it. In fact, it can even ideas for making your own system. I particularly like the emphasis of getting the right question in the first place. Once you have a basic idea from this book, you can, of course go deeper into the I Ching (although his version is much more fun), tarot, fire gazing or sheep's livers (this last being too messy for me). Personal stories of working with the oracles described make the book a fun read and give you an idea of what really working with an oracle can be like, both the good and the bad. Not only should you read this book, you should use it.

5 out of 5 stars No Ordinary Oracle Book!.......2005-02-25

Lon Milo DuQuette's Book of Ordinary Oracles is no ordinary book on oracles! It is engaging, humorous, and a spellbinding book -- one that cuts through the routine and often superficial information frequently given in books published on this subject. Lon DuQuette gets to the heart of what divination by an oracle is and why it works. He then offers the reader his many unique ways of consulting the oracles, and, after consulting them, he most importantly reveals exactly how to use that information to answer our most personal questions. Lon's gifts to his readers are a keen sense of humor, years of experience, and his ability to make complicated and difficult information easy to understand. Lon Milo DuQuette takes the occult, hidden world of "telling fortunes" , and makes it accessible to all through ordinary, every day items. I highly recommend this book to all future soothsayers and other questing people. It will certainly occupy a prominent place among my many books on divination.

5 out of 5 stars High Wisdom And Livingroom Magic.......2005-02-23

The Book of Ordinary Oracles presents masterful, original, and truly clever divination experiments which perfectly represent the true intent of oracles and so-called "fortune-telling" practices. As a practitioner and author myself in the divinatory arts, I recommend this enjoyable small book for its playful and astute delivery of large ideas. Once again, author Lon DuQuette applies his rare gift of humor and invention to a wealth of esoteric knowledge without ever diminishing its value.

Oracular practices, we learn, are built upon the lost art of questioning-one's motives, choices, expectations, etc. in matters of self-perceived consequence. "When you actually know the question" writes DuQuette, "the answer is everywhere, and you can see it in anything you observe." This book invites you to play alongside a master soothsayer, discover oracular tools in everyday objects, and learn the necessary perspectives that make divination immediately appealing and relevant to modern sensibility. Though augury has never been this much fun, despite itself the book leaves you primed with more psychic fuel than you ever bargained for.

Book Description

Why memorize anything? Laptops, cell phones, PDA's do all the memorizing for you, right? Well, not really. When you need something RIGHT NOW, it needs to be stored in your heart.

That's how God's Word should be--so when something happens, it's right there. After all, how did Jesus handle temptation? He quoted God's Word in its face. A specialized version of NavPress' successful Topical Memory System, this book will help you deal with whatever life throws at you--if the words are in your heart, and not just in your machines.

2 out of 5 stars No NASB, bias for "social justice".......2007-04-17

The book has two weaknesses. One, it fails to include the New American Standard Translation. The NASB remains the standard for accurate translation of the original language into contemporary English. Leaving out the rock-solid NASB translation is unfortunate. Two, there seems to be a subtle bias toward the liberal evangelical view. This is especially evident in the "Witness by Justice" series under the Leadership Section. All Scripture IS inspired by God and Christians should always be anxious to memorize Scripture and support justice (Prov. 21:15), but, in my view, "social justice" Christianity is seriously flawed. This book approvingly quotes the radical slogan "No justice, no peace." I hope that this is not an indication of the direction of the Navigators as a whole. All in all, I recommend the original Topical Memory System rather than this.

5 out of 5 stars Sword of the Spirit.......2004-11-19

THIS IS THE BEST THING I OWN (Outside the Word itself)

As a junior in college at the University of Nebraska I have had the awesome privilege to partner with The Navigators, a Christ-centered organization, to advance both God's word in my heart and the nations.

This book by D. Mason Rutledge is basically an edgier version of the old school Topical Memory System (TMS) that The Navigators have used for decades. Just like the old TMS the new Memorize This contains perforated scripture memory cards but ups the ante with 112 in total (the 4 different versions are NIV, NLT, KJV and NKJV) I believe the TMS contains 60 cards.

-There are 4 topics to these cards with a general theme for each
-Each theme has 4 scripture reference cards that deal with each issue/promise
-Topics for the cards are as follows:
*New Believer's Assurances of: God's Love, Jesus, Forgiveness, Strength, Answers, Eternal Life, Guidance
*Growing Disciple of: God, Christ, the Word, Others, Life, Disciple for Christ
*Life Issues: Love, Prayer, Purity, Giving, Humility, Perseverance, Study, Worship
*Leadership (as a witness to others by): Love, Life, Justice, and the Word

There is a great book that also comes with the verses (210 pages) and provides questions, famous quotes, and fun stories to really make a person think about the who, what, when, where, and why's of the Scripture being memorized (it is supplemental and does not have to be used with the cards, however I highly encourage it). The book is a great discipleship tool. If you are meeting with a younger dude or dudette then this book helps asking questions for your 1 on 1 time.

MEMORIZING SCRIPTURE HAS CHANGED MY LIFE.

Problem: When I came to college I knew the stories in the bible (at least a brief overview of them) but I didn't know the Scriptures, I could not for the life of me find the passages I ambiguously knew. I also knew that prayer and fellowship was a good thing but I didn't realize the power behind each. And I knew I had to live a good life, but I couldn't give an account as to why. Now that I know more of God's Word (it's a lifelong process) I CAN give an account and that account I give is Scripture itself!

Solution: 1 Peter 3:15 says, "...but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you." (ESV)

Example: Living in a dorm on campus is a challenge and as the visible "Christian" on the floor many people come to me randomly for help in their lives. Problems with shame, guilt, addiction, anger...you name it! So what's a brother to do? I don't have a counseling or psychology major, I'm in business! My only hope is to take them to the Scriptures I've learned through this system and...it works, mountains have been moved!

Deuteronomy 32:47 is so in encouraging, saying that Scripture is "...no empty word for you, but your very life..." (ESV)

So why not hide it in our hearts? Come on brothers! Let's go sisters! Let us become Hebrews 12:1-2 men and women, persevering in knowing God's truths and telling them to the world!

Your brother in Christ,
-Steve O

P.S. With all due respect I must challenge one of the other reviewer's opinions about Scripture being used as a weapon as "wholly opposite Christian teachings." Perhaps there is a misunderstanding that took place but God makes it crystal clear that Scripture and Prayer is and should be our only weapon in life. Maybe the world teaches/assumes that Christians should not fight/defend with Scripture but from God's privileged perspective (the only one I really trust) this is what He sees/says:

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
-Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

"...take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God..."
-Ephesians 6:17 (ESV)

And Jesus himself saying,

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
-Matthew 10:35 (ESV)

4 out of 5 stars scripture is a weapon.......2004-05-25

I'm sorry you didn't consider this book for your kids Ephesians very clearly calls God's word a sword.
eph 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
This is all wrapped in a warrior donning his armor, which is the prayer, the word, and the confidence from knowing those things.

This is a world in which the man with the most information wins. In God's world the man or woman know knows the most about Him, will be able to remove himself from the race of the world. Soon, he'll race only for the fruits of the spirit. (another good one to memorize gal 5:22)

5 out of 5 stars Thanks God for This Book.......2004-04-23

The first verse to memorize was PS 86:5 "You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to those who call to you."

I used this as an introduction to my daughter to show her God is forgiving and loving. We talked about sin, and the need to call to God.

The second verse is zeph 3:17

The Lord your God is with you,
He is mighty to save,
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.

The concept of GOD delighting in us and rejoicing over us really touched my daughter.

Anyway, after just discussing these two verses (along with a couple months of teaching to get her to this point) she accepted Jesus.

I had studied the context of the verses around the ones to memorize and used them in context. At first I resisted the concept of memorization. But if taken slowly it's really easy. So don't not buy the book on account of that. Even if you don't memorize, the cards that come with the book can be used as aids to help you introduce topics. They come in several popular translations.

Anyway, thanks to this book, my daughter will hopefully have a higher forwarding address in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Trash.......2004-02-22

I bought this book for my two boys but after reading it first, I decided not to give it to them. The author advocates keeping scripture memorized so it can essentially be used as a weapon. I found the messages to be wholly opposite Christian teachings. One must wonder if the author himself carries God's word in his heart or is simply trying to exploit the faithful for his own personal gain.

5 out of 5 stars Flow motion rules!.......2002-12-07

This book is a very good teaching aid, it is clear and precise and gives intructions simple enough for young children but also features advice that more experienced players will find very usefull. The flowmotion pictures are really great and help show a player exactly how to move. Each picture is anotated and the book covers every aspect of our wonderful game from pitching to sliding and from bunting to catching flyballs and crowhops. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their technique.

Yefim Shubentsov left the Soviet Union at age 40 to find freedom in the United States. Ironically, he came to realize that "many people in the free world are in a kind of prison as well": our addictions and cravings. He has taught 96,000 people to escape from food cravings and smoking addiction. Give up the idea of the magic bullet or quick fix--he wants us to "reject the miracles being peddled," grow tougher, and recapture our common sense. "Then, when you leave prison, there won't be a jail to send you back to. You will have destroyed it."

Shubentsov blames the "cult of self-esteem" and public opinion for stripping away our toughness and responsibility. Our cravings are not carved in stone because of our emotional histories, he says--they are under the control of our "creativity, common sense, and cleverness," tempered with patience and endurance. He describes a healing energy force he calls Bio Energy, a "sixth sense" we all can tap. The book is mostly motivation and psychological theory, with frequent case studies illustrating the points. Brief practical sections give techniques for developing your Bio Energy, losing weight, and quitting smoking. --Joan Price

    Book Description

Who hasn't heard about the dangers of smoking, obesity, and substance abuse? But no matter how much you know in your heart that you shouldn't have that drink, smoke that cigarette, or eat that chocolate, you know just as well that you will. There is something powerful about a craving. It's not that we're poorly informed, it's that we can't stop ourselves. Our biology--our craving mechanism--has us standing before a firing squad, shouting, Come on already, shoot! Anyone who has been on a diet (or ten) or quit smokingagain and againknows how true this is. Yefim Shubentsov is changing all that. Shubentsov has no time for draconian measures or asceticism; life, he says, is meant to be enjoyed. His simple technique employs a new perspective on craving and a heavy dose of common sense mixed with a powerful new discovery: Bio Energy. The result of years of behind-the-iron-curtain research, Bio Energy is a force within each one of us that waits only to be stirred. By understanding your cravings and awakening your Bio Energy, the bonds of addiction are easily thrown off. Yefim Shubentsov is placing the power to cure your cravings right in your hands. In this book, he will reveal--for the first time--the effective methods he has used to help 90,000 people regain control of their lives. This strategy, the Shubentsov Solution, enables people to stop smoking, overeating, and craving--without patches, questionable drugs, or denial.

I smoked for 30 years, tried to quit 7-8 times unsuccessfully, then came accross these tapes. I listened to them twice and found it EASY to quit!!! The information was exactly what I needed to learn. If it worked for me, it could work for you. Best Wishes in becoming SMOKE FREE!!!

    1 out of 5 stars I feel cheated!!.......2005-05-24

One thing I hate about ANY self-help book is to have to wade through lots of pages of preliminaries before I get to the heart of the book's message. Another thing I dislike is to read how to deal with an addiction that the author has no personal knowledge of. In this book, I had to wade to page 117 to chapter 7 before he gives the "exercises" that are suppose to awaken your "Bio Energy." Instead of reading word-for-word, I skim by only reading the first sentence in each paragraph. It's quite obvious that this author has never smoked during this lifetime because, as a former smoker myself, I can tell you that his "cold turkey" approach won't work. I totally agree with the review of 5Feb00 that the author looks down upon us in the United States; he thinks that Russians are toughter, probably because of those miserable winters. He gives reasons to quit and then says to use patience and determination to tolerate the three days of withdrawals. On page 162, he says that he wants you to quit without pills, without patches, without gum, without substitutes, and without weight gain. I've got news for the author: when strong emotions versus logic, logic always looses. On page 74, he states that, if people use the nicotine patches, folks must ". . .recognize that they have just shifted their addiction from one form of nicotine to another." I have another news flash for the guy: using the patch will (1) immediately cause you to quit inhaling poisons into your lungs from the tobacco smoke; (2) get you to break the strong habit of having a cigarette in your hand, putting it into your mouth, sucking on it, and then watching the smoke as you exhale; and (3) if you follow the instructions, teaches you the patience required as you realize that it will take weeks for you to totally quit comfortably. If you try to quit cold turkey, you will either repeatedly fail and feel miserable or you will quit, but you'll want a cigarette each day for the rest of your life. The latter possibility is most certainly NOT complete freedom from the addiction!!! Why not quit comfortably and completely with the patch instead of making things hard on yourself by trying to quit all at once with no help?

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-12-27

I had the pleasure of meeting this man in person several years ago. This book is the next best thing if you can not "experience" him directly. He is very much into "energy" and that aspect is not found in the book.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-05-04

This was a really helpful book that acted as the light at the end of the tunnel when I was trying to quit smoking. I had wanted to quit for years and found it virtually impossible. This book helped me to achieve "the impossible."

Anyone who is adicted to something and reaching out for a book to help knows the truth--you're hooked and you need some help. Preaching a ton of facts that only make you feel worse won't help. Shubentsov cuts to the chase and reminds the reader of the inner strength each person has inside necessary to break the chains of addiction.

This book was by my side for the better part of a year as I continued to fight the urges with Shubentsov acting as my tough but loving coach. I have since passed my copy on to my mother and have bought copies for friends and other relatives that struggle with addictions.

If you're looking for someone to tell you that you have no control and that there is no hope for you, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you're looking to end the vicious cycle of addiction, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. It may very well change your life...

5 out of 5 stars Unwelcome news for Jenny Craig, Richard Simmons, etc........2001-01-28

This practical guide to overcoming addictive behavior should be required reading - if only for the controversial nature of the "boot-strapping" approach! Molly-coddled Americans will blanch at Shubentsov's take on dealing with our cravings: RESIST! Fight back! Stop being such a sissie! "What are you - a man or a mouse?" Personal initiative is prized here, and it's a refreshing change from the victim mentality offered by many therapies and so-called "self-help" programs. For help in steeling your resolve, read this book!
