Customer Reviews:
Best so far -- Finally Learning Independantly is fun again!.......2007-09-14
I have been trying to learn Japanese independently now for quite some time, I have been even getting to the point of giving up because of difficulties. Each of the books that I've picked up seem to offer their own little niche in focus, and I have been having some difficulties because of the structure of those books and the way that some just throw things at you without a good format or presentation. This book has changed my experiences and eliminated a lot of the struggle for me.
I've found that the approach this book takes is almost like a course in school. Breaking down what you are learning into small portions that make sense. Start with numbers, then add a few letters at a time, then slowly integrate more, eventually replacing the English letters with the Japanese characters and sounds that you have learned. Some of the books don't even give you the proper pronunciation and that was the first thing the chapters do when they introduce the new sounds / characters you are using. The review questions and check-ups for each chapter and telling you what you need to review before moving to the next has really made me enjoy learning independently again!
I have even tried some of the learn by Manga and comic books that Amazon offers as well. I find that the material I learn in the Japanese from Zero! books is what I retain and the other books become reinforcement of that information. Each offer their own in the way of vocabulary, I would still recommend having a Japanese - English / English - Japanese dictionary handy for a quick reference.
Real-world Japanese.......2007-09-10
I was also a member of YesJapan from which the lessons in this book were drawn. There are some great interactive features that obviously can't be applied in this book, but the fact that JFZ is portable and has a built-in workbook is a big plus. (note: the "typos" mentioned in an earlier review refer to an early version of YesJapan, not this book) I bought this book for my niece who was having difficulty in her by-the-numbers high school Japanese class, and her grades and comprehension immediately improved. Highly recommended for students who want to learn practical, real-world Japanese.
Great book to learn hiragana.......2007-08-17
This is my first book on how "to read and write japanese" and I am quite happy with this purchase.
If you want to learn to speak japanese, there are better learning tools out there. I suggest invest your money and buy the more expensive Pimsleur audio series. Best learning guide I've used so far.
If you want to learn how to write hiragana, this book is very good. In fact, it is a very good companion to Pimsleur.
The lessons are small and easy to follow.
- It starts out teaching you romanji, and gradually introduces you to hiragana.
- It has plenty of writing exercises.
- When you learn a new character, the book immediately uses sentences which combines romanji and hiragana.
I am halfway through the book and I am quite comfortable with hiragana already. Looking forward to finish this book and start with Volume 2 and 3 and learn katakana and kanji.
You'll be Disappointed.......2007-07-27
I was a subscriber to the Trombley's website, which is based on this book. As another reviewer pointed out about the book, the website is littered with typos. The author is an native English speaker who went to school in Japan. He does not have a grasp of English grammar, so it's hard to trust his knowledge of Japanese. There is no logical system in place, no logical progression. It's a mish-mash of this and that, here and there. So you never really get a hand-hold on one thing that leads you to the next. It's all over the place. He's an interpreter, not a teacher, and it really shows. You'll learn very little from this one.
Good, but was it written by a non English speaker?.......2007-06-22
Overall, the book is very good, and it did help me learn Japanese, it's just that there are so many typos in the book! Also, there are some words that are said in the book (in Japanese, of course) that are not mentioned in the glossary, so you have to look them up yourself somewhere else. One last thing, the book has this "progressive" system, which is really good and I love it, it's just that sometimes the book "forgets" what you have learned, so there is stuff in Japanese that you have not already learned (sorry, that was hard to explain!). Dispite all these petty mistakes, it realy is a good book.

I've read the first book of the series and now im half way through this one. One of the best books around if you wanna brush up on some grammer or just pick up the language for the first time. Just give it some time and soon u'll have japanese nailed down. Also if you have rosetta stone these books will help a lot in conjunction with the program to better understand it all. I cant wait to start learning the third installment which touches on kanji and finish the other 2 books to be ready to have long conversations when i go to japan. BUY NOW its a really good learning experience.

Book Description
This book contributes to building the research knowledge that language teaching professionals need in developing curriculum for the large population of East Asian heritage students (including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) in countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, where speakers of East Asian languages are among the fastest growing populations. Heritage learners are defined as those who initially acquired certain levels of linguistic and cultural competence in a non-dominant language mainly through interaction with foreign-born parents and other family members at home. Heritage language instruction is currently a hot topic and is becoming a sub-discipline within the fields of foreign language education and applied linguistics. Special instruction for heritage language learners is on the rise, particularly in the U.S. and Canada. Providing theoretical and practical information about heritage-language instruction in terms of curriculum design, learner needs, materials development, and assessment procedures, the goal of this book is not only to promote research about heritage students in East Asian languages but also to improve the teaching of these students in various educational settings and all over the world, especially in English speaking countries. Teaching Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Heritage Language Students is intended as a primary text or reference for researchers, educators, and students in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment studies related to teaching bilingual and heritage students in general and East Asian heritage students in particular.

Book Description
Already a longtime hit in Japan, "Iron Chef" is taking over America-and this is the first and only official guide to "the culinary equivalent of the Friday night fights" (Orange County Register).
Each episode of this "oddly addictive"* show features a cook-off between one of the valiant Iron Chefs and a guest chef bold enough to challenge him. With pro-wrestling style theatrics, bad dubbing, and high-intensity plate-by-plate commentary, "Iron Chef" has boiled over into a bona fide phenomenon.
The book-first published in Japan but with added material for the American audience-features full-color photos, an episode guide, recipes, interviews with all the Iron Chefs, and much more. The heat is on...and the fans' mouths will be watering for this authentic insider's guide.
Customer Reviews:
Iron Chef: The Official Book.......2006-11-20
I enjoyed the information in the book and all the pictures. I was hoping for more recipes.
Top entertainment, ok book.......2006-10-26
Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.
The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!
the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.
I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).
watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.
SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".
"If my memory serves me correctly....this book will give me recollections of funny and good times."
+150 on the Wow meter for the show, 6+ for the book;
-100 on the Puke-O-Meter for "the Other Thing"
Die-hard Iron Chef fan's souvenier.......2006-07-20
This is one of the few but worthwhile memento's of the now defunct TV series, Iron Chef. While some fans are disappointed that there are few recipes, the book is about the show and the people. Interviews abound from not only the Iron Chef, but the cast and crew as well. There is even a statistics chart in the back detailing the wins and losses of Iron Chef battles. If you still love Iron Chef and want something memorable, this is the book.
A Magnificent Book for Fans.......2005-09-09
If you have ever had anything more than a passing interest with Iron Chef before, this is certainly a book worth picking up. The book itself is packed with gorgeous photos, plenty of interviews, and a staggering amount of information about the show itself, particular episodes, and even recipes. Granted, most people won't necessarily be using this book as a typical cookbook, but the added recipes just feel like a bonus on top of an already excellent book.
All in all, I was delightfully satisfied with this gem. Also, if you're looking for a bargain and are not sure about the book itself as far as quality is concerned, I highly suggest taking a look at the Used section here at Amazon. I picked up my copy that way for a fantastic $1.98 last year for pristine quality and even now the prices for the Used copies are in the same ballpark.
good comprehensive overview of the series.......2005-03-04
This is a rather nice little collector's item for fans of the show and even those who are just simply curious about its hype. It provides a fairly informative history of the show, nice illustrations throughout, recipes, "battle" ratings, and even restaurant location and information for selected chefs on the show.
The best sections were the personal interviews from various contributors to the show.

Book Description
This directory of 43 up-and-coming artists from Japan is a “look-book” of contemporary artwork. While focusing primarily on illustrators, the guide also represents work from the world of photography, sculpture, and painting. In addition to providing American creative professionals with source information on Japanese talent—full color images of their work, brief biographies, contact information, listings of awards received, clients, and shows in which their work has appeared—the directory also serves as a window into the latest trends in the Japanese illustration world. A convenient key—A=Acrylics, D=Digital, O=Oils—assists in the understanding of the mediums in which each artist specializes. Among the artists featured are Takashi Akiyama, Hitoshi Miura, Sadahito Mori, Takashi Sekiguchi, Radical Suzuki, and Hiroshi Watanabe.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I hoped it would be........2007-02-11
The vast majority of work displayed in this book is generic and pedestrian advertising illustration. A lot of it almost looks like stock illustration. The book's description and the reviews posted here made the volume sound cool, but the reality was a let down.
I prefer the variety, quality, and relevance of work offered in the American Illustration annual or even The Spectrum annual.
I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2006-12-29
this is the best collection of japanese illustrations ever! so much variety and so much to learn from.
Awesome Book!!!.......2006-10-24
Don't let the plain cover fool you, this book is filled with great artwork!
The art in this book runs the gamut of mediums, from simple pencil drawings to paintings to sculpture to photography to computer animated. Some art is very urban and manga-oriented, and some is very classic looking. A personal favorite of mine is Hiromitsu Yokota-his "blissful seasons" are absolutely gorgeous.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in art. It is a collection of Japanese artists, but the art goes far beyond the traditional "manga" style that I expected when I first opened it. This book is full of a huge variety of art styles and is a great survey of a large and unique group of artists.
Overall, just a great book full of great artwork!
Wonderful collection of beautiful art!.......2006-10-19
I ran across "Art as 1" through a colleague. I realize it's somewhere between a catalog of available artists from Japan and a reference book, but I picked it up while I had to wait for something and flipped through it. I don't know what I expected, but this wasn't it. This is absolutely delightful, full of beautiful art, and I was overwhelmed by the variety of styles.
The work of two artists in particular leapt off the page and into my heart. Tsuyoshi Nagano's movie-poster style of work is magnificent, particularly the "Star Wars" illustrations. And Susumu Uchida's paintings of fish and fishermen are breath-taking in detail and style. Wait, make it three artists. I also love Hitoshi Miura's "mechanical whale" sculpture. This isn't the only pure whimsy in the book, but it was my favorite.
I'm not an artist or a commercial graphics person, but it seems as if "Art as 1" should be a standard reference for advertisers and art schools alike. As for me, it's not a reference, it's now a "coffee table" book I share with friends.
Great Resource and Amazing Art!.......2006-10-14
I couldn't put the book down and was amazed by the work presented by the 43 artists. Many of the characters brought a smile to my face. I will use this book as a valuable resource for my clients who want something new, fresh, and original on their products.

Book Description
Morimoto's cooking has distinctive Japanese roots, yet it's actually, as the chef calls it, "global cooking for the 21st century." Morimoto's unique cuisine is characterized by beautiful Japanese color combinations and aromas, while the preparation infuses multicultural influences such as traditional Chinese spices and simple Italian ingredients, presented in a refined French style. Bringing all these elements home, with helpful step-by-step instructions and gorgeous photography, this accessible book explains Chef Morimoto's cooking techniques and plating philosophies and brings Japanese cooking to your own home. AUTHOR BIO: Chef Morimoto has been the Japanese iron chef on the Food Network's weekly show, "Iron Chef," and its spinoff "Iron Chef America," since 1999. The show airs in the United States, Canada, Australia, Israel, and Hong Kong. Formerly the Executive Chef of the Sony Club and Nobu, Chef Morimoto now has his own restaurants in New York, Philadelphia, Tokyo, and Mumbai, and also created his own brand of sake and beer.
Customer Reviews:
The mind of Morimoto.......2007-10-13
IMO, one of the most innovative chefs of our time. I absolutely love his combination of knowledge of tradition, combined with his blatent disregard of the constraints of tradition. The photography is superb, showing his mastery of plating skills and hinting at his highly advanced knife skills. He clearly goes beyond traditional Japanese cuisine, bringing in influences from multiple other cuisines. While this is certainly a great coffee table book to look through just for inspiration and to stir conversation, it is also a great book for the innovative chef to cook from.
My only minor, very minor, criticism is that a few of the pages have the text written over a background pattern, making it a bit difficult to read those few pages. It's worth the effort to read them anyhow.
This book has been carefully edited and is a most readable English, having lost none of the skill of the chef from it's editing. Actually, the editing enhances your understanding of what Morimoto is thinking. He is an obviously sophisticated thinker in terms of how he designs 'his cuisine.' The recipies are really quite straighforward, simple in the Japanese sense of having worked hard to remove complexity. Some of the ingredients are not common, but to worry about that is to miss the point of the book - innovative fusion cuisine at it's finest. You are given sources for ingredients, so you should be able to duplicate the recipies nonetheless. This book challenges your preconceptions with stimulating recipies, beckoning you to stretch your own culinary skills.
When the likes of Mario Batali, Anthony Bourdain, and Ferran Adrin, all masterfully innovative chefs, praise this work, I know I'm in good company.
Very exciting insight into this chef's mind!.......2007-08-22
I've been waiting for Morimoto's book for some time, and it does not disappoint. Beautifully constructed and designed, the recipes are enlightening and different. The insight into Morimoto's culinary perspective is welcome. I believe this will be useful to study and some of the recipes look wonderful.

Customer Reviews:
A Book for Business Japanese.......2007-07-04
For every student of Japanese their comes the time where you are looking for some more advanced textbooks to handle business Japanese. This book helps with good text examples and clauses and if you work in a company you will have to cover topics like introduction, telephone calls, asking and requesting and the book will help to fill those gaps. The vocabulary in each section help to encourage the learning and the English explanations making sure to understand the context and therefore it is a good bridge between an advanced Japanese book and a standard learning book. A prerequisite is that you should be able to recognize an amount of kanjis otherwise it takes far more time to work through this book. I hope for the next revision of this book the publisher will make a CD available.
Japanese for Professionals.......2005-08-08
It's a tough contents, but, very useful for person who wants to learn Japanese business way.
A Good Remedial Guide.......2000-07-11
Japanese for Professionals has proved to be an ideal book for me. I have 4 years of formal Japanese study and lived in Japan for 2 years. However, over the past 5 years I have not been using Japanese. This book is helping me review and practice for potential work in Japan. Just what I need to get back on track.
If you do not have extensive experience in Japanese (understand how to read kanji, etc.) this book may be too advanced. Even still, it provides good vocabulary explanations, so you may be able to use it.
Content covers all the basics, such as formal introductions, as well as helpful ideas for document writing and the like.

Survival in the Office: The Evolution of Japanese Working Women (Volume 3)
ASIN: 4770025017 |
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2004-12-19
I picked up a translation of this series while living in Japan. The entire series is fantastic. I could relate very well from my past experiences working as a temp and as an administrative assistant. Things aren't so different in the US from how women are treated in business environments in Japan. There are sharp jokes about the way that women are under valued and how the OL's adapt to deal with it. The girls are also hung over in every third strip. Very VERY funny!
