Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Oxford-PWN Polish-English English-Polish Dicttionary: 2 volume set.......2007-10-08

I found the dictionary to be very extensive in the amount of English words that have their Polish equivalent. The grammer section along with examples of how to write letters, resumes, etc. is also very useful.

My one complaint is that it still could be more exhaustive. It would be nice to get a dictionary that takes the definitive English dictionary that has all the English words imaginable and gives the Polish equivalent in the English-Polish section, and the reverse, of course, in the Polish-English section.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Polish-English, English-Polish dictionaries.......2007-08-26

These dictionaries have a lot of terms in them. I'm surprised and extremely pleased at how comprehensive they are. So far, every term I've wanted to look up has been in them. If you intend to stay in Poland for a long period of time, you need these dictionaries. The standard ones out there just don't have nearly all the terms you need to know.

5 out of 5 stars Polish/English Translating.......2007-08-14

I have taught ESL for quite some time and also write articles for a Polish-American biweekly newspaper. I've had numerous penpals from Poland over the years - and well, bottom line is that I've become very fluent with the Polish language but still, from time-to-time, find the need to have a good Polish/English dictionary at hand. I have used one of such for many years - it's tattered edges are proof of the need I've had for it over the years! However, over the years, I've outgrown my old dictionary and as new words have come into every language, so too have they into Polish....

This year I came across a project which is translating a book that someone wrote, from Polish to English. The book deals with someone's life story during WWII, and there are many terms in this book that I had trouble finding in my old dictionary. That is when I began looking for something newer, better. I came across the Oxford double set, and although I must admit that it's price might be the highest from any of the other out on the market presently, it is the best product I could've gotten. The definitions for each word entry are not only many and thorough but also sentence examples are given for everything. It's an amazing product. Definitely worth the price. And I'm sure I will have this dictionary for always. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product.......2007-01-11

This is an excellent dictionary set and the delivery came very shortly after I placed my order.

5 out of 5 stars Best pressi I ever bought my daughter.......2007-01-09

My daughter is at University taking her Masters, part of her course is to translate Polish to English - English to Polish, she was having a hard job of it so I bought her this set for her birthday - she is over the moon with it, makes her job so much easier - she says it's the best pressi I ever bought her.

I thought this would be more useful phrases for everyday Polish, not for travel to Poland. It's a very good travel book. Sections broken down well so you can easily find the right phrases, but this is more for travel.

What a find!! Anyone travelling to Poland will find this
phrase book really handy! Wish I had it with me the last

that you will need to know about food, restaurant odering,
sightseeing, travel, doctors, etc. etc. You'll never leave

This publication was very helpful. I will use it in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Phrase Book .......2006-07-07

This is definitely a good phrase book, the pronunciation guide words are a big help. Depending on how far you plan on going with your polish studies, makes a big deal when it comes to purchasing this product. If you are looking to pick up on a few important phrases or common words, this book will serve its purpose. If you looking to learn a bit more than basic communication. I still recommend this book in addition to some other Polish self-learning courses, preferable an audio or CD-ROM tutorial. Like Eurotalk or Rosetta Language Online. This book will help you commit to memory some of the things these programs teach you, while your at the office or out and about, and need a convenient reference to check your memory against. Overall this is a good product.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Easy To Use.......2005-09-25

This book covers a lot in a simple format. Easy to use. I purchased several dictionaries, but this book is my bible. The best that I have come across.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and simple........2007-05-05

It's hard to find good materials for teaching Polish. This book has the advantage of being simple, clear, and inexpensive. The method of teaching is traditional. It will give you a good foundation in grammar.

4 out of 5 stars Not too bad.......2005-09-02

This book is outdated and it uses an old style of language teaching. However, it is a good book to start learning Polish. The vocabulary and the expressions used throughout the book are very useful, and in no time you will be able to say many things in Polish.
The exercises can be repetitive and sometimes boring, but they do help you reaffirm the grammar you have learnt in each lesson.

If you are looking for a more up-to-date version of this book, it is available online and free of charge. You can also purchase an audio CD for the online version this book.

1 out of 5 stars The updated version is available FREE online........2004-08-31

I had the pleasure of studying under Dr. Swan, the author of this book. He has a new version of this book for every single semester of classes, but they aren't officially published versions. He used to have the print center make course guides, but now (for the first year book) he has put the book online at http://polish.slavic.pitt.edu/. It's always his most up-to-date version. Also, instead of doing the drills at the end of the chapter on paper, he has a free computer program called Lektorek. It tells you when you are wrong so that you don't learn something incorrectly. It's sort of buggy sometimes, but for the most part it's much easier to learn Polish with this program. Another advantage to the online version of the book is that you can click on the drills that you'll have to do in the Lektorek, and it will pronounce it for you. The conversations border on the surreal, but all in all, I did learn a lot from the Lektorek and online pronounciation.

5 out of 5 stars First Year Polish.......2002-07-13

This was a very useful book for learning Polish. I lived in Poland for a year and a half. This book was one of the things that helped me become fairly fluent in this hard language. I also reccomend the the Intermidiate Polish by Swan.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-02-23

I worked through this book from cover to cover before a trip to Poland several years ago. The vocabulary is colloquial and current. The book turned out to be an excellent preparation for my trip. I found that I could make myself understood in most everyday situations.

I found First Year Polish to be so useful, that I bought Intermediate Polish...also and excellent book.

Book Description

Polish: An Essential Grammar is the sole up-to-date Polish grammar available to English-speakers. A reference guide to the most important aspects of the language, it presents a fresh and accessible description, focusing on genuine patterns of use in the modern language. The ideal reference work for the independent learner the business traveler or the researcher, this grammar is written without jargon and with a special focus on areas traditionally problematic for English-speakers. The preliminary section on the Polish alphabet, the range of contemporary usage and grammatical examples, and the comprehensive index contribute to the accessibility of the book. Sections also focus on aspects frequently left out of less-detailed works (such as the diminutive noun, vowel and consonant changes, irregular verb declension and declension of words into different parts of speech) making this book an essential companion to the student of Polish even as study continues to advance.

I bought this book after having looked far and wide to discover that there is not a single good Polish grammar book in the English language. This one is at least comprehensive and well organised.

On the other hand, it has instances of language so obsolete that no Poles use it at all and many Poles do not even know about it (e.g. 'miê'). It's clear the author has relied too much on written sources and lacks an intimate knowledge of the language, which is a pity, considering the reputation of the university she works for.

Worst of all is the contextualisation of the grammar. 'There are no trees in this forest'. So where's the forest then? It was proven decades ago in the English language teaching industry that poorly contextualised examples hinder the acquisition of language. When will Polish book writers learn this?

So why not only one star? Because it's the best on the market. If you hope to learn Polish grammar with the help of a book, I strongly reccommend this one and only this one. It helped me immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Matko boska!.......2004-03-04

What a great resource. Bielec's book provides the most succinct and clear grammar of Polish I've ever read. As an upper-intermediate/lower-advanced speaker, I've found this book invaluable in helping explain the ever overwelming nightmare of Polish declination.

The organization is in legal style, which means each chapter is a point, and within that is a sub-point, and a sub-sub-point, etc. (6.5.6.6.2) I like that; others might not.

Summarizing, this book would be useful for beginners, yet is an absolute must for intermediate and above.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners and Intermediate.......2003-03-05

I love this book, it has helped me to learn the language. He breaks it down into small enough chunks so anyone can learn. I also recomend his smaller book, "Basic Polish A grammar and workbook." I have used them together to learn the language.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent grammar review.......2000-06-26

This book is especially helpful for those who have completed at least their first year of learning Polish. It is a good review of most of the basic grammatical structures a learner needs for comprehending this difficult language. The book's only short-coming is its sometimes confusing organization. A frequent user, as I am, may have to resort to tabbing some of the pages.

This dictionary was bought for an elderly 83 year old man who's first language was Polish but he had not spoken it for 60+ years. So when he forgot words and phrases he became very frustrated and annoyed. this dictionary is the perfect answer, not only for the information he requires but being pocket sized as well he can carry it around easily for frequent referral.
So it is good for the native speaker, the traveller and the student

    5 out of 5 stars its a dictionary.......2006-01-31

not much to say really, its a polish/english dictionary... it works great.

4 out of 5 stars Concise, many entries, good introduction to phonetics.......2005-05-17

For the small size book - this dictionary contains a good amount of words, with a pronunciation and some extra information about phonetics, kanguage origin, differences etc. Yes, some words are missing, especially from the modern world etc - but almost all the most common or popular words are there; the guide to the phonetics and the menu guides help also. I give this book a strong 4 stars!

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-02-09

Frustrating to use if one is looking for words in Polish. Words found in the English-Polish section are not always contained in the Polish-English section, and some of the more common roots or infinitives simply aren't there.

    Book Description

A standard text for the teaching of Polish, this revised edition introduces two new features: a grammatical sketch of Polish and an index. Volume Two contains drills for the lessons in Volume One designed specifically for classroom instruction, a survey of Polish grammar, and an index to both volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but only if you are VERY DEDICATED and FOCUSED on learning Polish.......2007-01-10

Not the best book for beginners. But once you get the basics down online or elsewhere, this book can give you an all-out fully comprehensive overview of the general language designed for intermediate level students. You'll need to be very dedicated to the book if you really want to learn.

3 out of 5 stars not the best for beginning self study.......2001-11-22

I needed to cram some Polish fast and since the reviews here have been raving about this I bought this book for self study. However, I found that I was stuck in the first lesson because it is about pronounciation and it's impossible from the text to figure out the pronounciation from the text alone.

Not wanting to give up, I contacted the Yale Center for Language Study which, according to the book, has a set of tapes you can obtain. After a long and drawn out request that took a month (and maybe would have even taken longer if it hadn't been for a friend in Yale who physically went up to the center to get the tapes and post it for me) I listened to the tapes and found they were actually drills to Volume II (the classroon drill book). Which meant they were useful but not as useful as I had hoped.

I think this book, if you stuck with it, maybe could be a brillant course. I'm going to try it some more. The fact that it has no pictures and is not 'fun' makes it less appealing for me than other self study courses. After surveying a bunch, I think the Pimsleur tapes - expensive as they are - were the best in getting me started.

5 out of 5 stars The best out there!.......2000-08-18

This is without a doubt the most useful and versatile Polish language instruction book I have found. It's not the colorful, cartoon-filled textbook you might remember from high-school or college French class; rather, it's organized in a way that makes it wonderful for independent study for anybody beginning Polish.

Each chapter begins with a large number of mini-dialogues one sentence in length. For example, "Co to jest? To jest pioro." Translations are included with each example, of course. The earlier chapters then proceed with sections describing spelling and phonological rules of the Polish language. Following that is my personal favorite section, grammar! Grammar is explained in a way that may perhaps be a little unclear in the beginning, but as your familiarity with the language improves, it WILL become clear quickly.

Nearly every topic you could want to learn about is covered by Mr. Schenker in this book, including noun and pronoun usage, verb inflection, verbal particles, prepositions, dependent clauses, conditional phrases, and so on. I don't think I would be exaggerating to say that you could pick up this book with no knowledge of Polish whatsoever, and with a reasonable effort become quite capable of conversing, reading, and writing in Polish.

Whether you're looking for a starting point or have studied some and want to improve, this is an invaluable resource.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2000-06-21

i have purchased several other books from amazon in order to learn polish in addition to the few that i have picked up on ebay. most of them have been helpful to an extent but NOTHING has come close to helping as much as this book. after reading the other person's review, i purchased this and everything that was mentioned was completely correct. you will learn a tremendous amount in a very short amount of time when studying this book. there are exercises that will test your knowledge and will benefit you greatly. 1000 people could purchase this book and have a money back refund and none would send it back. this book is invaluable. don't spend your money on 12 dollar books because you think it's a better value. just drop the 30 dollars and this is the only book you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars An effective tool for learning a difficult language.......1999-01-15

For some years I have STARTED to learn the Polish language as a mental exercise. Didn't think it would be too difficult, since I had already taught myself German and Italian and used these languages when visiting Germany and Italy: and had used my high school French and Spanish to good effect when visiting France and Mexico. So you can see that I thought of myself as a natural linguist without formal training. Wanted to learn a slavic language, but not Russian because of the cyrillic (sp?) alphabet, so settled on Polish. I started with the Hugo series. Was baffled. Went on to... shall I name them or only count them? FOUR other teach-yourself methods. I think the trick was the organisation. I'd almost given up hope when I ordered Schenker's Beginning Polish. I opened on Page 1 sometime in October 1998, and now, in January 1999 I am starting on Lesson Eight on page 117 and going to the races. Gentlemen, I raise my proverbial hat to a text which is slowly and inexorably opening the mystery of slavic language to me. The complexity and beauty of Polish are evident even at this early stage. The lessons are so subtly organised, so logically presented, that I am only held up by the need to memorize words that used to leave me baffled and upset, but which in this text gain for me an expanding picture of the interrelationships of words that have very little reference in the languages I already know. Am I making sense? Alexander Schenker in a master at putting the puzzle together in logical baby steps. The only possible problem is that the student had better read EVERY WORD of the explanations, because every word is vital. And when we study alone like this, we don't have a professor to answer questions, but the answers are there if you read carefully. My only regret is that I cannot seem to obtain Volume Two, which is no longer in print.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing Dictionary.......2005-04-05

Want to know a word in Polish? Using Larousse:
    1. Look up the English word.
    2. See how to pronounce it. (The English word, that is.)
    3. See the spelling of the translated word in Polish.

    That's it!
Doughnut [pronounciation here] n. peczek, m.
No pronunciation of the word you are searching for.

Most people looking for a language translation don't need the pronunciation of the word they are using to look up, but want the pronunciation in Polish. And ... the Polish word is NOT even listed in the Polish listing of words! (No peczek. No wszy.)

Don't waste your money on this one. It isn't for beginners. I guess the Polish-English half is good to read a newspaper in Polish (but then you only need half the book!).

5 out of 5 stars My Polish friend has envy!.......2004-11-17

Yes it is true! My friend in Poland and I converse online with voice. Often we must either one of us look up words and translate. She has often expressed envy over my dictionary. Also, she has testified how accurate it is.You won't find wiatr (fart) in there, but now you can write it in the back, since I told you what it is in English. The dictionary is made of paper that feels good to the skin, which is another consideration I have when buying books.

There are two sections at the end of the book. The first delineates irregular English verbs and the second gives full conjugations of Polish verbs.

BUY IT! This is the only Polish dictionary you'll need unless you will become a professional translator and require access to hundreds of thousands of very technical words. This is a dictionary for the common person who has common conversations or reads common Polish. It is inexpensive too! Wow! After this review and the price, you know you want to buy it.
