Wonderful book.......2007-05-12
I had just started my own business and heard about this book on Dave Ramsey's show. I bought the book and found that it had a lot of great ideas about how to reach new customers and ways to keep existing ones.
I highly recommend this book for anyone starting a small business.

Marketing 101 from your crazy uncle.......2007-09-22
Mack has some very interesting and relevant content in this book, but wasn't too impressed overall. I felt like an experienced, drunk uncle was talking to me about marketing while reading this book. I think Mack would agree that that the ideas in the book aren't new or revolutionary, but I think he does a good job of condensing marketing to a few points. Since this book is primarily for small business owners, that's a good thing. I'd like the book more if he had stayed away from the rum.
Plenty of useful brain food.......2007-05-21
Ben Mack has taken the concept of branding and made it accessible to even small business owners. He demystifies just what branding is (hint: it's not just about the logo), and takes it from being a dirty word to something useful. Rather than placing it at the polar opposite of direct marketing, he instead shows that it can be used by those who also use DM advertising, and that you don't necessarily have to be limited to one or the other.
Mack shows the value of the brand--what your company stands for, what it offers--and most importantly, the relationship with the customer. He outlines the various stages the customer goes through, from initial contact with your product, through interest and consideration, all the way to purchase--and beyond. He then gives further advice on improving your brand, mixed with anecdotes from his own experience, as well as that of others.
What I got mostly out of this book was a series of exercises and thought processes that helped me to really think about how I and the small businesses I am a part of/owner of are presented to the public, and what that entails. People often take that for granted, especially once you start hitting microbusinesses--but the concepts are useful regardless.
Unless you're working in corporate marketing, you probably won't have a use for everything in this book. But take from it what you can get. Mack's writing style is excellent and he explains concepts with clarity, humor, and occasional subcultural references (RAW, anyone?).
Think Two Products Ahead.......2007-05-06
I have so much interest in read this book for comments. Unfortunate Amazon don't delivery my purchase until today (50 days after).
It will make you rethink how you market everything.......2007-05-01
Think Two Products is an excellent book that will have you not only rethinking how you brand your products, but will even get you to reconsider how you brand and market yourself. I found this book to be informative, intriguing and highly useful for getting me to really think carefully about how I market and promote my products. The exercises were especially helpful for demonstrating the practice behind the theory.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who runs a business, big or small, because you really will be thinking two products ahead by the end of reading it!
You have a brand whether you think you do or not..........2007-04-16
It's relatively easy to get someone to make a single purchase from you. But how do you instill that long-term loyalty and love that causes people to refuse to buy from anyone else? Ben Mack talks about that and many other branding issues in the book Think Two Products Ahead: Secrets the Big Advertising Agencies Don't Want You to Know and How to Use Them for Bigger Profits. It's an unconventional book that doesn't mince words...
Contents:
Pool Hall Wisdom; Brand Misinformation versus Back-End Thinking; The Common Thread and Thinking Two Products Ahead; Branding? Be Good to Your Gander; Branding Processes Are Strikingly Similar; What's a Brand Essence?; Legendary Branding; Extracting a Brand Essence; The Kama Sutra of Marketing - Five Basic Positions; Framing to the Right Target Audience; Structured Creativity - Framing Tools; Creativity on Demand - Why Ad Agencies Can't Brainstorm; Feed Their Passions; Plan to Have Many Conversations; Everything Communicates; Storytelling - Letting the Genie Out of the Bottle; Branding and Thinking Two Products Ahead; Myth, Magic, and Making Money the Old-Fashioned Way; AKS; Jeff Lloyd's Secret to Commercial Residential Real Estate Sales; How to Turn Every First Sale into a Residual Stream of Income; Direct Response Branding; Acknowledgements; Index
Mack states that successful branding comes when you start thinking two products ahead of the current sale. In other words, you need to be thinking about the overall story and impression that your company and product leaves with a customer. This collection of legends and perceptions defines your brand, not the cute logo or corporate colors you stick on your products. What that means is that you *have* a brand whether you think you do or not. You need to bring your customer into the "marketing funnel", which is a four stage process: intrigue, consider, interested, and buy. When you get them to buy, then the "two products ahead" mindset turns them from one-off buyers to loyal customers. It's all a matter of managing your brand... the story that your customers tell about your company and product.
This book started off as an e-book that the author marketed himself (for a much higher price). His style of writing and communication is frank and blunt, with no room for dancing around an issue. As such, it's a lot of fun to read. Since I don't have a marketing background, I found it a little difficult to keep the finer points of marketing vs. branding vs. selling straight at times. But overall, I got the message that your brand is a priceless asset, and it's important to do everything you can to make sure that brand says the right thing to your customer.
A valuable read for any business, but especially for the small business owner who doesn't think he has a brand... he does.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

An Outstanding Small Business Tax Planning Guide.......2007-07-23
This book is perfect for anyone who currently has (or is contemplating) a small business and wants a lot of general questions answered about business entity structuring, deductions, taxes, and more. It doesn't attempt to replace the need for professional legal or accounting advice. However, it does help you to become more informed about the issues, and that means you're better equipped to profitably steer your business. This book might be too basic for some people. However, it's extremely reader-friendly and is the ideal starting point for anyone who is unfamiliar with these topics. Save yourself some expensive legal and accounting fees by reading this book BEFORE you seek professional guidance in setting up your business or redefining your structure.
Not as useful as I thought.......2007-04-02
This book concentrates a lot on deductions you can make if you own a business. While there is a lot of useful information (and all legal if you keep abundant records), I was expecting more creative ways to lower taxable income.
little guy disaster.......2007-02-13
This book is geared to business people and not for the average individual. A lot of the tax saving strategies are fantasy too!!!!
It's alot easier to start a home-based business than you think!.......2007-01-12
This book is absolutely amazing! Great tips, awesome information, and everything backed up with references. You can get started with a home-based business (Watkins, Avon, etc) for next to nothing, and the money you save on taxes in one year should more than pay for the cost to get started with a familiar company. This info in this book can help you start saving tax dollars from day one.

Well-referenced.......2006-11-01
Much of this book does apply to me (a sole-proprietor). You can get a lot of the information from other sources, but this book does cram a lot into a fairly compact and easy to read format. Although the book is not exhaustive, it does have a benefit over many other tax books (including a couple of the NOLO tax guides): It cites the IRS rulings, private letters etc. that you would need to back up your tax strategies in the face of an audit. My accountant is only willing to claim deductions that he can justify to the IRS. The citations make this easy.
The book is not particularly well-organized, so you do need to read the whole thing to find specific tax deductions.
The book has saved me some money on taxes over the past couple years. In that respect, it has been a good investment. More importantly, it has suggested strategies for me going forward.
I will buy the new edition when it comes out.

Some OK tips, but mostly common sense.......2006-07-27
I was interested to get this but really REALLY disappointed when one of the first tips was to call 100 people. No kidding. I found this to be a lot of re-hash of old ideas. Some decent tips but you really have to search for them. Bad layout, too. Not easy to read. Lots of stuff sort of thrown at you. If you are really NEW to sales, you might benefit but most of it you can get through better books or free in internet searches, your team leader, etc.

This book gave me a lot of great ideas for my Pampered Chef business. It was very helpful with answering objections and working with my downline. I only have 2 so far, but I will be better able to help them become successful. I had to pace myself or I would have read the whole thing in one sitting!

Just the right amount of information, without overwhelming parents or kids with too many medical terms, etc. I am a registered nurse with two boys, ages 7 and 9, and this book was a great starting point to our conversation about the birds and bees.
Perfect for reading with your tweeners!.......2007-06-27
I love this book! I appreciate its matter-of-fact tone and the friendly, comfortable pictures, instantly recognizable as being drawn by Marc Brown, the author and illustrator of the Arthur series (very popular in our house). (The author of this book is Laurie Krasny Brown, his wife). I read it with my 8- and 10-year olds at the same time. There were some giggles, but also lots of interest, and good questions asked. My ten-year-old took it and read it again by himself when we finished. I was grateful to come across a book that so exactly suited my purposes, and would highly recommend this for helping with the "talk" with your tweeners. (Best for ages 7-12).
great intro to the facts of life.......2007-05-14
I bought this book for my 5 yo who is starting to ask about the facts of life. We will read it together as the topics come up. It was helpful for me to just get some phrasing with which I was comfortable answering her. It does have one sentence that is a clear description of intercourse - since I think she's too young for that knowlege, we will just skip that sentence when reading to her (and she can read it herself when she is older).
Fun, friendly but sensible pictures and illustrations from Marc Brown (Arthur books).
Cute book.......2007-01-03
The book is quite cute, and very easy for my 7 year old to grasp. Make sure you preview the book first before you share it with your child. This way you can discuss it's content in your terms rather than reading word for word. If there is any part that your child is not ready for you can sort of skip over it and move on to the next part (if your child is very young).
very good teaching tool.......2006-11-10
i purchased this book to help guide and facilitate our discussion on sex and all the things related to the topic. as a parent i felt that it was very tactful and purposeful in it's discussion. it bridged somethings that were important but maybe not in the forefront in our thought processes. i also feel this is more a book for family use and not as appropriate for institutional use due to the depth of the subject matter.

A reliable manual for home-based selling.......2006-09-07
If you've ever attended a Tupperware party or spoken to a Mary Kay or Avon representative, then you are familiar with the concept of direct selling. More than 49 million people worldwide are hawking everything from toys to life insurance as independent contractors. Many of these professionals found a terrific resource in the book Build it Big, published by the Direct Selling Women's Alliance (DSWA). Now, the organization has compiled more insights, anecdotes, tips and techniques, specifically for female direct-sales professionals. Unlike most business writing, which is usually gender-neutral or all about "him," the operative pronoun here is "her." Although the sales strategy and self improvement advice isn't particularly new, it is solid. The book guides promising novices (most advice would apply to men as well as women) through the direct sales necessities, from finding inspiration and prospects, to asking for referrals or sales, dressing appropriately and building a team. Whether you need the advice or support of a coach, a sales guru or a fashion diva, we believe you will find it in this collection of 101 best practice essays from veterans of home-based sales businesses.

Customer Reviews:
The best law school book ever!.......2006-05-12
I can't believe how great this book is. I followed everything Ms. Wright said to do, and was admitted by some of my schools, but not by my dream school. Then, I got a letter from my #1 school telling me I could go on their waitlist. I followed all the instructions in this book, and today I got my letter!!!! Needless to say, I got in, and I am REALLY looking forward to going to law school in the fall. Thank you Ms. Wright for all your wonderful advice! This book is the best.
Everything my advisor SHOULD have told me!.......2005-10-13
My advisor never asked any of the right questions or gave me the kind of information that would have helped me with my plan to study law. While looking for books on the LSAT I found this book and it really helped. It told me everything that the best advisor would have told me. It really helped me evaluate how I felt about law school and how to properly prepare myself. The last time I went back to my advisor he was shocked at how much I knew. I feel really good about my applications and think I have a really good chance of getting a "big envelope".
MUST READING FOR LAW SCHOOL APPLICANTS!!!.......2005-07-16
As a college professor who has advised law school applicants for over 25 years, I found that this book is simply the best one I have ever read on applying to law school! I was so impressed by this book that I now require my students to read it before talking to me in detail. This book is so concisely written that it can be read comfortably cover-to-cover, unlike some of the other advising guides, that are so unwieldy that students do not want to wade through them. The comfortable and clear writing style of the book makes you feel like you are sitting down with Ms. Wright for a personal advising session. These students have consistently come back to tell me that this book was THE SINGLE MOST USEFUL thing they read to help them with the law school application process.
Those who critique this book as not having "insider secrets" have clearly not read it thoroughly. I was impressed by the large number of "insider secrets" to the process, that were previously unknown to me and my pre-law advising colleagues. Because of this book I have completely changed the way that I advise my students, and have noticed that their success rate for law school admissions has been rising dramatically. The key in this highly competitive applications environment is to know how to pick the schools you are applying to, and target your applications for those specific schools. The tips in this book tell you how to do that. This book also really goes through the two-stage process of law school admissions today--wherein you can get a variety of "envelopes", or notifications on the status of your applications. Schools do not just admit or deny you these days. There is a whole range of responses, and the wise applicant needs to know how to maximize their chances of turning any of them into an admission letter. This book helps you do just that.
If you want to get into the law school of your choice I urge you to read this book, then read it again carefully, and follow all of its advice! I am confident that your "big envelopes" will be sure to follow!
Not an "ultimate guide".......2005-07-13
Firstly,I enjoyed the format and tone of the book (how the author addressed the reader). However, I did not feel that she imparted any insider secrets that the book promised to reveal. If you are just starting to research law school, and do not know all the requirements of admission, then this book may be a tremendous help. If you have done your homework and are looking for an edge when it comes to admissions, I recommend some more topic-specific books. For example, books on how to write your personal statment, books geared specifically towards LSAT preparation (Powerscore books were the most helpful for me), and there are some websites with great advice geared towards aiding the individuals whom you are asking to write letters of recommendation. Yet, for those new to the entire affair, this book can definitely clarify the requirements for you.
The best book available about getting into law school.......2004-09-09
I have read several other books about getting into law school, and this one is clearly the best. It has many "insider secrets"--many of which are in its "Tales From the Trenches"--that you will find in no other books. For instance, I was surprised to learn that east coast schools differ from west coast schools in what they expect in a personal statement. This book tells you what those differences are, and how to turn that to your advantage.
In addition, the "15 Essential Factors" listed for choosing your law schools will make you see the schools you are considering in a different light. The appendix to the book gives you data on each of the law schools so you can start using the factors right away. Instead of making your choices on one or two factors, such as reputation or a magazine ranking, you will find schools where you will be admitted, be successful, and be happy. You will also learn how to choose the schools that will help get you to the kind of career you most want--or what to do if you are uncertain about what you want to do with a law degree.
I especially like the fact that this book is written for everyone--not just those who believe that they are destined to go to an "elite" law school. The advice in this book is terrific for the elite schools, but also helps those who are not "presumptive admits" to the most competitive schools. It contains a unique system for analyzing your credentials to determine where you will get in--including a system for analyzing your chances when competition for admission is changing from year to year as it is now.
Unlike many books that are filled with a lot of useless information masquerading as advice that make the book larger and more expensive, this book is insightful and concise, and written in a manner that is easy to read and comprehend. It is, I believe, the best purchase you can make for advice on getting into law school.

great book.......2007-03-24
This is a great book . I have all the Benoit books and dvds. I think this is the best of the Benoit books. There is so much info in these books it's not right out front , it's between the lines but be assured its there. Tracking is regional but the Whitetail info is not. I have learned more about mature Whitetails from the Benoit books and dvds than any other source. Larry's the man no doubt but Lanny Benoit may be the best pure deer hunter alive. Theres a little horn tooting in the book but as someone once said " If you can do it it ain't braggin ". I have Hal Bloods book too it is also very very good. If you buy just one book on tracking buy this one or Hals.
Average Book........2004-11-02
The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.
These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.
I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.
Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.
If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you.......2003-02-04
If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.
Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days.......2003-01-28
This is one of the best and most unique whitetail hunting books I've read. The classic and now out-of-print "How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life," did a great job of describing the Benoit tracking method. This newest book is even better.
"Big Bucks the Benoit Way" is an excellent presentation of how the Benoits hunt. The Benoits are almost exclusively trackers, and they base their techniques on what their vast experience has proven to work best: not on the theories of others. This independent thinking makes this a very refreshing book, and their dozens of 200-pound plus bucks prove that they know what they are doing.
This book is loaded with great photos of big bucks and the Benoits in their trademark green and black wool jackets. There's plenty of shots of sagging meat poles, the deep woods on snowy days, and the tracks and rubs of big bucks.
Most valuable though, is the great information on how the Benoits find, identify, and then follow the track of a heavy buck until they successfully bag him. While few of us will ever be so spectacularly successful using these methods, all of us can learn from this book. I've successfully used these same Benoit methods to track down and bag trophy bucks from Montana to Wisconsin.
Hunters who enjoy this book share a kinship in understanding the magic of the deep woods and a fresh tracking snow and the smoking hot track of a big buck. If you are that type of hunter, you will like this book.
Bruce L. Nelson, author of "Hunting Big Whitetails."
benoits big bucks.......2002-03-16
i have read big bucks the benoit way at least a dozen times.the best deer hunting book i have ever read.i live and hunt in north dakota no matter where you live and hunt you can learn from this book.as far as i am concerned larry and his family are the best deer hunters in the country they hunt in the toughest whitetail country there is out there tracking no matter what the weather is doing. HUNTING HARD EVERY DAY .taking home the biggest 200+ bucks they can find. bryce towsly and the benoits done a great job putting this book together. im hoping there will be more from the first family of deerhunting thankyou and keep bringing home those big bucks.
Book Description
President Bush has said coal is America's "economic destiny." Despite a century-long legacy that has claimed millions of lives and ravaged the environment, why has coal become hot again? Few of us realize that coal already supplies more than half the energy needed to power our iPods, laptops, lightsanything we use that consumes electricity. Every time we flip on a switch, we burn a lump of coal. Our desire to find a homegrown alternative to Mideast oil, the rising cost of oil and natural gas, and the fossil fuelfriendly mood in Washington will soon push our coal consumption through the roof. Because we have failed to develop alternative energy sources, coal has become the default fuel for the twenty-first century. In the tradition of Rachel Carson and Eric Schlosser, the veteran journalist Jeff Goodell examines the faulty assumptions underlying coal's revival and shatters the myth of cheap coal energy. In a compelling blend of hard-hitting investigative reporting, history, and business analysis, Big Coal illuminates the stark economic imperatives America faces and the collusion of business and politics that has already set us on the dangerous course. Filled with troubling environmental and health revelations, Big Coal shows us that our shiny white iPod economy is propped up by dirty black rocks.

Big Coal.......2007-10-10
I am a technical writer new to the Power Industry, after 30 years in Aviation. A new industry is alot like being 21 again, fresh out of school with a lot to learn. So, I bought some books on the Industry. Big Coal was my first read because I write operating procedures for flue gas desulfurization scrubbers being built to neutralize the flue gas, produced by coal fired power plants, that make acid rain. This book is well researched, well written and very informative. The first 180 pages deals with historical information of the coal industry. The last 80 pages is more about current events and is an informative read. This is a Good Book!
The truth about coal.......2007-10-07
Jeff Goodall does a spectacular job of explaining the effects of coal on real people's lives. Although a journalist, and not specifically a scientist, he does a thorough and professional job of unearthing startling facts about Big Coal and debunking myths. He spent years researching his subject and has done an superlative job in laying out the facts in an accessible and honest way. For anyone who has questions about the effects of Big Coal on America and the world, and wants the facts told with heart and intelligence, this is the one to read.
Cool thinking about a hot topic.......2007-09-14
Right from the start, when author Jeff Goodell discusses daily life around a coal extraction site in Wyoming, "Big Coal" is a captivating look at a subject that is seemingly as ordinary...as a lump of coal. Goodell knows his subject. He has witnessed coal mining operations in West Virginia, Wyoming and China. He has interviewed government officials, regulators, environmentalists, mine operators and the miners themselves. He has witnessed the devastation of strip mining and spoken to people whose land is literally washing away from them. He has spoken to those whose livelihoods are dependent on coal, and who even get a thrill from pitting their lives against Mother Nature. He has detonated explosives that exposed coal seams, accompanied inspectors worriedly checking excavation sites for potentially-fatal weak spots and ridden the rails with those who transport coal across the country.
"Big Coal" details the thrills and dangers of mining, an occupation that has cost 100,000 lives since 1900. It discusses the geological forces that laid down the coal beds, the differences between grades of coal like bituminous and anthracite and the historical personalities that bequeathed us our power system. He tackles tough issues -- like the efforts to control their entry of coal by-products mercury and sulfur into the environment. He is not afraid to tell it like it is. To the current administration's contention that there are 250 years of coal in the ground (250 million years in the words of George W. Bush), Goodell counters with studies that show that fewer than 20 years' worth of that coal that is *economically* extractable. Goodell analyzes the devastating impact of burning carbon-rich coal on the global environment. CO2 being a greenhouse gas with enormous impact on climactic warming trends. Goodell lays out a compelling case for the folly of building more and more plants that belch more of the stuff into the atmosphere. Goodell details the way Big Coal ignores and fights this long range problem for short-term profit. Most depressingly, he relates the political enablers that allow Big Coal to persuade Americans that polluting their streams and wrecking their children's environment is good for them. He discusses the way foreign juggernauts like China and India are beginning to repeat America's coal-centered mistakes in their quest to become world economic leaders, and the decreasing leverage that a coal-hungry America has to counter this threat.
The last third of the book was the hardest to read. It described the political expediency and pure greed that induces the coal lobby and US politicians to ignore, minimize and paper over the true costs of burning coal. Easy, low-cost solutions that can reduce coal's effect on the environment are put off as long as possible so coal execs can get a few more years of profits from the black rock. The public is misled to keep shareholders happy and politicians in office. This section caused me to put the book down out of frustration with our greed-drive political system.
But do not despair. "Big Coal" lays out the entire complex picture of coal and the industry required to harvest and exploit it. The book is not an attempt to destroy the coal industry or to destroy America's technological leadership. It is a clear-eyed and straightforward assessment of a difficult and complex reality. Reading the book will help you understand the many facets of the way that coal keeps the global economy running and that will (without adequate protections) land us in a world of hurt. Goodell's even-handed and comprehensive appraisal of the issues that fuel the coal controversy may make him seem biased in the eyes of some. And he is biased, if by this one means that he values clean air and land, a future free of climate change and live miners living to healthy old age with their families. But he is always fully truthful.
"Big Coal" will help you understand the issues -- technological, political, moral and economical-- to be tied to getting our power from coal. The Black Rock employs tens of thousands, allows millions to live in luxury and enables our nation's technological success. Yet it poisons our children, warms our planet and takes or shortens the lives of hundreds of thousands. I appreciated "Big Coal" for its ability to lay out the facts without the smog of industry and political obfuscation that usually accompanies their telling. An excellent, quite readable and educational book.
Big Coal.......2007-09-10
This book reads with enormous clarity and logic. It's better than a good fiction novel, and much of what Mr. Goodell has warned the country about did come to pass shortly after the book was printed. To understand America today and its energy policies, to understand the corruption and manipulation and political cronyism behind the scenes as our government deals with corporate power and big coal, to understand possible solutions, buy this book! It's a must read for any American citizen who has spent day after day hearing the recent and tragic news stories concerning our Utah miners. It's a prescient book. It will inform you as a voter and a citizen. And, it is soooooooo lucid and easy to read.
How and Why We Are Using a 19th Century Fuel in the 21st Century.......2007-08-21
Although this was in my library for some time, I decided to read it now due to the mining accidents in Utah and China. I was hoping it might shed some light on why the number of mining accidents seems to be increasing, which it did. It also provided a host of other information about coal and the companies that mine and burn coal that was fascinating.
From mountain top removal mining, to reverse mining to open pit mining, the author covers how coal is mined in detail. He also looks at the economics of coal in tunneled mines versus strip mines and why West Virginia and surrounding areas are so poorly compensated for the work they do. It was amazing to see the mine operator's comments in Utah on the news, while reading his previous statements that were detailed in the book. It became quite obvious that his interests in the miners trapped in Utah were more economic than true sympathy for the miners or their families.
The second section deals with the burning of coal, and why it is so well loved by utilities. Basically, coal burned in older generation plants is a license to print money and the coal and utility companies are fully aware of the damage done, but put profits ahead of anything and everything. Further, the author details the obstructionist techniques used by these companies to keep coal going as a fuel.
In the final section, the author details the damage being done by coal to the environment, as well as to humans who live downwind from the plants. He also looks at various solutions that could be employed today to make cola a much cleaner burning fuel and how this would affect the costs of electricity. He also ventures to China to see what they are doing about carbon releases and how we are helping to cause the massive build up of coal fired plants in Chine with our purchasing habits.
This is a wonderful book that will answer almost any question you would have about the mining and burning of coal and why we are still using a 19th century fuel in the 21st century. It is very readable and should be read by every individual with a connection to the electric grid. My only complaint is in how the book was foot noted. No foot notes were present in the text, making it hard to line up the text with the notes at the end of the book.
