Book Description

Most decorating books omit the most important element of the home: you. Does your home reflect who you really are? Feeling at Home focuses on this most essential aspect of decorating: creating a home that is truly your emotional center. Every room and object should answer your needs and make you feel more human and whole. Alexandra Stoddard gently leads us through a process of self-attunement and self-expression in which we discover not only our practical needs, but also our yearnings--perhaps a sunny spot for reading; a colorful nook for ironing; an inviting place for paperwork. She urges us to question the rules and to never "pre-compromise" by talking ourselves out of our true desires. With imaginative and practical examples from her personal and professional life, she helps us discover countless ways to express ourselves at home and instantly feel comfort, pleasure, and ease.

Why settle for merely being "in" our homes when we can be "at home?" Feeling at Home puts us on the path to home as we've always dreamed it could be.

Feeling at Home, Defining Who You are And How You want to Live, Morrow, 1999.

Something has happened to the magazine racks at US drug stores and grocery stores, and even bookstores, such as Walden and Barnes and Nobel. Public affairs magazines are missing. Life Magazine is gone, even Playboy is relegated to the highest shelf in a plastic wrapper. I have been remodeling my home and discovered that I could find several dozen magazines devoted to decorating and remodeling. There were specialized issues that focused only on baths, kitchens, "country" homes, apartments and even magazines that offered a focused on "outdoor" living.

However, with all of these selections when I examined the floor plans closely there were few choices. Bathrooms may now include bidets, unusual for an American home, if not urinals, but in the end there is a simple choice: toilet, tub and shower, sink and medicine cabinet. Kitchens only offer stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, possibly a disposal and microwave. When I think of my grandmother's Thor, purchased early in the century, appliances that enabled the user to swap out parts and use as either a dishwasher or clothes washer, I wonder to what extent we have changed.

Amid all of these choices I have recently found one book that speaks to my own needs
Feeling at Home, Defining Who You are and How You Want to Live by Alexandra Stoddard, published by William Morrow, 1999. Chapter 2 is a delightful dialogue called "Shaping Your Home" in which a husband and wife are interviewed by a decorator the questions deal with how the couple actually lives. The decorator commands the couple
"Site on your side of the bed. Now sit on John's side. How does it feel?" The discussion is almost like couples therapy.

The author emphasizes the role of light on the house. She explains that reflection, that can mean more light, can come from many places, including mirrors and shiny surfaces. She also frees the reader to embrace color, the colors that the person occupying the house really likes. If you like purple, red, and bright yellow use them. She includes items not usually thought have as part of the decorating task as essential: telephones, the multiple roles of the kitchen table, windows in relationship to the views they display.

The ultimate goal of the book is to make the individual or the family looks at their own needs, which may be unconventional and design living spaces according to these needs, not some preconceived plan.

So, back to the home I am renovating. It is a house I have owned for 47 years sand lived in with a husband and two children, with a teenager and adult daughter with ideas of her own, a strange period when I shared it with a brother, ex-husband, daughter and a daughter who returned home after a divorce. I have rented the house to strangers while helping a daughter with grandchildren, while I was in the Peace Corps, while living in a downtown condo. I will be returning home now, planning yet another use of space, sharing with short-term renters.

I plan to reread the Stoddard book with a notebook, examining as she suggests what "feeling at home" means to me, using the house as a focus for "designing my life". I look forward to purchasing my notebook, to including a history of my earlier lives at the home, including information about the street, the neighborhood, and hope that when I return to this subject in a year I will be living in my home happily, more happily than every before.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful.......2005-08-10

I really enjoy the way that the author writes & how she encourages you to be thoughtful about your surroundings. It's a book that you pick up periodically ( not read through like a novel.) I enjoyed it enough, that after reading it years ago, I replaced it on Amazon after the original book got water damage.

1 out of 5 stars Page after page of dumb questions.......2004-08-25

I was terribly dissapointed with this book. My brain went numb as I read page after page of dumb questions about what you might do in each room. The author writes as though she is the wize, all-knowing mother and we are poor, imbecilic children in need of enlightenment. When I buy a book that is supposed to improve my home, then I expect some tips, some examples, SOME PHOTOS. Nothing like that here.

3 out of 5 stars unrealistic at times.......2002-05-14

I have to say that I was both happy with and dissapointed by this book. My overall impression was that the methodology for trying to really understand how to create a home that reflects the person you are is sound. However, I was dissapointed with much of Stoddard's descriptions of how she applies her theories in her own life. Frankly, it sounds as if she has all the time in the world to take the day at her own pace, and I was left wondering: "Who lives like this?" I don't know ANYone with this kind of life! At one point, she mentions that she likes to sit in her pj's and write 'till lunchtime. Me, too! But PLEEZE - who has the time for this? These kinds of 'insights' into how to live your life left me feeling frustrated.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhh says my soul. . ........2002-05-01

I always enjoy reading Alexandra Stoddard's books. When I need to calm my soul and nourish the feminine, there's nothing better than Alexandra Stoddard's writing style. Feeling at Home was no exception. Really enjoyed the tips, the dialog with clients, and the overall content.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Intent, Questionable Methods.......2007-08-30

Having now read several of Ms. Knight's (Ramtha's channeler) books I have concluded that she, like other spiritualists of this bent, have the greatest of intentions, but her methodology is overly crafted into a system that is as much about making money as it is enabling spiritual realization. There are other paths that won't string you along as much. Worth the read if you are looking for another perspective, but I wouldn't get hooked into the Ramtha system.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, transcribed with the clarity of a master.......2006-06-20

The Fireside Series Collection Library is an ongoing library of specific topics of interest taught by Ramtha the Enlightened One to his students at Ramtha's School of Enlightenment (RSE).

Ramtha defines a master as one who is able to consciously create their reality from their mind. This being lives without lack or limitation and therefore has no obstacles or arguments against the realities it is focusing upon. Thus its spirit and personality is integrated and the person is completely clear and free from hypocrisy and emotional addictions.

Ramtha describes the training at RSE and stresses the importance of being profoundly conscious and fully present with whatever you are doing. When you do not consciously create, or go unconscious, then you operate from your common thought. This is working from your past and thus unfolding in linear time and giving you more of the same reality.

He asks, "So where is your mind every day?" If you are not getting what you claim you want then your common thought is overriding your wishes and you allowed it to do so for the sake of emotional addictions and redemption.

The past represents a chemical burden upon you. You hide emotional secrets because you are ashamed of them or fear them. When you have something hidden you have to lie and you live the rollercoaster of fear of being found out, and then redemption when you "get away with it." You don't really know what truth is, and in order to really know it you have to let go of redemption and break the cycle.

You seek love in other people but you don't find it because you are not honest. Love lives beyond emotional addictions. We find joy in emotional detachment and only then does the pituitary produce the great hormones of bliss.

To become a master you must address that which is hidden and suppressed, and that means being challenged and accepting change.

This is a wonderful book, with a beautifully succinct message. If you want to master yourself then that means changing your common thought and stop being a victim to your past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One Hell of a Book. A Gem,.......2007-08-11

If there is one book that everyone needs to read about the so called War on Terror, this is it.

A superbly written account of the last few days in the life of Lt. Colonel Jonathan Netanyahu, the late commander and architect of the famous Operation Entebbe, now also called Operation Jonathan in his honor.

Although several written and video accounts are available of this operation, this is by far the best. Operation Entebbe, was the hastily planned and executed rescue operation of about 100 Israeli hostages, held by Palestinian terrorists at the old airport terminal in the east African nation of Uganda's town of Entebbe. For those not familiar with it,
suffice it to say that it was probably the boldest, most audacious, best executed, most dangerous, and most successful rescue operation ever carried out.

Iddo Netanyahu is in a unique position to give to best accounting possible of the details of the operation. Youngest of the three Netanyahu brothers, Jonathan (Yoni), Benjamin, and himself, the latter had access to public and private interviews with other participants in the mission, ranging from its lead pilot, Joshua Shani, to many of Yoni's fellow
expert commandos and members of the raiding party, to political figures such as then defense ministers, Shimon Peres.

For skeptics, I suggest the begin with the last chapter of the book, only 4 and a half page pages written by the publisher, entitled "Publishers Afterword." I cannot improve on it to explain why this book is so important, and should have the largest possible audience. Aside from the obvious, i.e Yoni being the greatest fighter Israel (or possibly the world) has ever known, this chapter explains that Operation Entebbe defines terrorism - those who are willing to give their lives for the purpose of taking lives,to the absolute opposite, the soldiers engaged in the fight against terrorism, for the purpose of saving lives. Aside from being a fascinating and riveting account of the details of the operation, the larger "lessons learned" are much more important in sustaining us in the current war against those who would destroy the whole Western way of lifeRaid on Entebbealong with it's Judeo-Christian values.

This book is definitely not for Jihadists, Anti-Semites, Israel bashers, or knee jerk anti-war people. I ask that all of these refrain from rating this review.

5 out of 5 stars Yoni, the Hero.......2006-07-27

Yoni Netanyahu courage at this time, his ability to plan, and lead this rescue has become legendary. The fact that the rescue was carried out without the "unit commander" is a testamony of his great ability. All of Israel knows and the Netanyahu family knows, even more so, what Israel lost when Yoni died. Even though I knew the outcome of the book (as it happened 30 years ago) I cried, and cried and cried when the book stated he died. And I was reading it on July 4th, the 30th anniversary of his death. This book also takes you into the mind set of Israel and why some things have been done. I now see Israel in a new light. Thank you Iddo, for writing this book about your beloved brother.

5 out of 5 stars "It'll be all right".......2005-10-23

A phrase Jonathan Netanyahu repeated over and over to his loved ones and the men of his unit who took part in the hostage rescue in Entebbe, Uganda. Operation Jonathan, for which the rescue at Entebbe would forever be called, was an extremely daring and dangerous mission which claimed his life and that of three other hostages. The Israeli unit under Jonathan went through many many practice runs and much planning went into the short hour it took to stop the terrorists and the Ugandans who backed them and to get the 103 hostages safely aboard the plane that would bring them back to Israel. The first chapter dragged a bit for me, but once the background for the story had been given, and the story began, I couldn't put it down. The story is told by his youngest brother Iddo who also served in the Sakeret Matkal for a time as well as brother Bibi. Sure there are always stronger, smarter, better people around. Who's the best? But that's not the point. His love was wonderful/extraordinary to me....II Samuel 1 What an incredible story. His fame shall live forever, the eulogies never cease. Read the story.

True the binding is a bit weird, but I LOVE the cover, front and back! "...A hero from (Israel's) past", "a new race of Maccabees". Some of the best books I've ever read are in shreds and tattered and torn. I once nearly read Crime and Punishment in college, read it to the end which was missing many pages. I could not put it down and I had more pressing books to study. This book is another one like that. What's most important is the content. I can't help but think of the zealots of Masada who carefully covered under dirt the worn pages of scripture in the makeshift synagogue and Mikveh they made on that rocky balcony of Herod's nearly 2000 years ago.

Yoni loved his brothers, that's obvious from his letters which can be found in Self-Portrait of a Hero, compiled by his brothers. I enjoyed Iddo's telling a story from their childhood when Bibi presented Jonathan with a "Talmudic dilemma": "You're in the desert with another person, you have one canteen of water. Either of you would need to drink the water to save himself. You can't split it. What would you do...?" Jonathan answered, "It would depend on who the other person was. (Good answer, my thoughts!) If it were Iddo, I'd give him the water." Iddo writes, "I looked at my big brother, who was then 15 years old, and I knew: He'd do it."

My favorite quote is from the publisher who writes in the afterword: "Terrorists die so that other people can die. Yoni died so that other people could live." Amen.

Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:3

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-01-03

I have an interest in hostage-rescue/counter-terror operations, and so when I saw "Yoni's Last Battle" (the previous edition of this book) at the local library, I decided to get it out. I enjoyed it so much, that I decided to order this more recent copy ("Entebbe"). The book goes into a lot of detail about the operation; but Iddo also puts a human face on the commander, his brother, Yoni. It is also quite interesting to see how Yoni related to his men; he was the ideal officer.

Iddo takes care to write accurately, noting his sources (and the reasons for choosing them) whenever there is a contradiction in different versions of the event. Iddo was once a member of Sayeret Matkal, so the men he interviewed, who were involved in the mission, would have felt more comfortable talking with him than with someone else.

Additionally, the diagrams in the book are helpful in piecing together what happened during the takedown.

I highly recommend this for anyone considering joining the service!

3 out of 5 stars Hit and miss.......2004-12-30

The book is interesting and fairly well done, but it suffers from both too much detail (seemingly interminable lists of exactly who was at particular meetings) and then not enough (the author says that Isreali soldiers had been stationed in Uganda in the years before the raid but doens't fully explain why; there are many other examples of times I wanted more context) In addition, although some doors were certainly opened to the author because he is the brother of Jonathan Netanyahu, as a reader, it is more difficult to accept some of the flowery compliments and accolades heaped on the commander when they are being filtered (or not) through a sibling. In summary, it is a highly personal and fairly readable take on the events, but not the definitive story.

Men are the bigger sex, writes Darden, but women are the fatter sex. A woman's hormones--coupled with pregnancy and childbirth--conspire to add fat throughout her life, making the average woman's body a little over 47 percent fat by the time she's 50.

Darden believes that there's only one way to permanently change this equation--to turn on the body's natural fat-burning mechanisms--and it's not aerobic exercise. He's a passionate advocate of strength training as the best method for improving a body's ratio of muscle to fat. Darden also asserts that there's only one way to effectively strength train, and that's using the excruciatingly tedious Super Slow system. He makes a convincing argument for the system, but he's among a tiny handful of exercise professionals who believe that people should train one way and one way only for the rest of their lives. Virtually everyone else says you should frequently change training methods to keep your body from getting so used to one type of exercise that it stops making improvements.

Those who have purchased one or more of Darden's 42 previous books will recognize most of the information in "Body Defining." But if you're new to his work, you'll find provocative ideas about how keeping your body cooler helps it burn more calories, and why you should drink much more water than you're consuming now. The actual exercise and nutrition programs are pretty strict, but Darden peppers the book with before-and-after photos of women for whom it worked. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars semi-starvation.......2006-06-21

I'm shocked that so many reviewers raved. First of all, the calorie count was too low for me. I was very hungry. Personally, I believe when you get used to being very hungry, or you get used to quite a bit less food, it is a sign that your metabolism is slowing down. I've had the pendulum swing too often to go through that again. Secondly, I found the last repetitions of the exercises such unpleasant experiences that I dreaded working out as time went on, whereas in the past I would get happier about working out the farther into a program I went. Third, it is very rare to find a body builder, and they are the experts at shedding fat, who doesn't believe that aerobics should be included in training, or who recommends Superslow. Schwarzenegger even reported (long ago) that he and a training buddy tried slow reps and abandoned the technique because it was not getting them the results they were used to. Fourth, I resent that the cover model was a woman who didn't need to lose any body fat. In fact, she didn't have to follow the eating plan at all. Lastly, even though there is in the reviews an example of someone who kept the weight off, I really wonder how the majority of people do after this cycle. It doesn't seem to teach realistic life skills. It certainly is not a health benefit to limit your foods to such narrow choices. Modern hunter gatherers (who most likely eat more like early humans, whom we mostly likely resemble in metabolism) often eat nearly a hundred fruits and vegetables with vastly more natural fiber that you could get in this regime. In additon, my endurance in dance classes did not increase nearly as much as when I switched to weight training plus jogging with intervals of rope jumping. However, it's nnot a terrible book, and if you can take the low calorie count, it is better than programs that don't have a good exercise component. But don't beat yourself up if you hate it. You can always try it again later (if ever) when you more ready for the severity. Or do something that takes the weight off more enjoyably even if it is slower.

This book be da bomb. I know the girl on the cover and she still looks like that, and that picture was taken in 1992 before she tried out for a remake of FAME at the local hipadrome. I know this because that is my main man holmes baby's mama. For real though, she is 35 has 3 kids and still looks like dat. She ocassinally does the diet in the book and ocassinonally smashes down a couple big mac's from our local McD's and washes it down with a jumbo slurpee but still is a pretty hot mama. I guess I got a little off track, but I'm trying to hollar at yall and let you know that this diet does work. Give it a try and you too will be looking like my man holmes baby mama shell-dawg.

4 out of 5 stars It's a good book, but..........2001-02-26

It is a good program and I'm sure it does work as advertised, however there are some drawbacks. First, some of us can't use it. For instance, as a nursing mother I can't superhydrate until after I'm done nursing, nor can I cut my calories as drastically as advocated without jeapordizing my milk supply (I realize this is a temporary problem). My other major difficulty is that it is a 6 week program, and doesn't really provide much information or helpful advice on what to do when you're not following the program. Frankly I'm more interested in what I weigh a year from now, than what I weigh 6 weeks from now.

With those quibbles aside though, it's otherwise an excellent book and program.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me!.......2000-12-12

I too came upon this book while looking for something on weight training. The before and after pictures got my attention as well as the uphill trendline for female weight gain over time. I like being able to exercise effectively in the privacy and convenience of my home. The weight lifting is immediately rewarding as each session brings improvements. After three weeks of exercise and diet, the weight loss and inches lost becomes dramatic. I lost 13 pounds and many inches in six weeks. His diet recommendations are not very practical for someone cooking for a family; I modified the diet recommendations using other resources to maintain a 1200 calorie/day low fat diet. After the initial six weeks I have maintained the weight loss by lifting weights 2-3 times a week. This book appears to be a dumbed down version of the men's book, Living Longer Stronger, which my husband uses, in that it offers far less theory but I wouldn't call that a major drawback. The bottom line is that the program works. I have recommended it to at least 8 others.

Book Description

How do we get to be who we are? Are we born that way, or do our experiences mold us into the people we eventually become? It's an old question, and the answer probably lies somewhere in between. Nevertheless, it's clear that our memories do play a critical role in establishing who we are and how we set about living our lives.

This book discusses our memories and how they work to define our personalities. Research suggests that certain powerful recollections called self-defining memories (SDMs) have a profound impact on larger issues pertaining to our identity and mental health. This book offers an approach you can use to tap into SDMs and analyze these memories for their specificity, meaning, content, and affect. Book Description

Re-Defining Stress to Prevent Disease examines the causes of stress and how thoughts, perceptions, and learned experiences contribute to disease and illness. Most people do not know how to live with stress. This lack of understanding causes the immune system to attack the body's organs, which in turn creates disease and illness at staggering rates. Stress cannot be eliminated; however it can be looked at differently, Re-Defined, to teach the brain how to handle a stressful event. In Jaffe's book, he educates the reader in a way that helps a person see stress positively, which in turn helps the immune system become stronger and fight off any pending illnesses and diseases.

    Book Description

This book--the first in a series of books from The Wonders--has been developed from a series of six sessions on what The Wonders term The Defining Statements of Existence. Together, these six statements define the totality of all existence throughout every dimension of reality and are intended to provide us with an opportunity for growth and understanding. In doing so, The Wonders have provided us with a whole new way of looking at life. They literally define existence in a way that has never been done before.

The Six Defining Statements: Existence Is But an Extension of Yourself; I Am Sufficient; I Am Limitless: My Choices Reflect My Limitlessness; That Which You Are Is That Which I Am, and That Which I Am Is That Which You Are; That Which You Choose, You Do So Out of Joy; All That I Am Is Love, All That You Are Is Love

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing & brilliant.......2004-09-20

This book came into my life three years ago. The Defining Statements of Existence have given mankind simple "rules" for understanding life. This is a must read for anyone wishing a deeper understanding of existence and the meaning of life. The Wonders emphasize man's free will and ability to choose and give clear examples of what holds us back from exercising these abilities. The Wonders provide the statements in a loving and gentle way which nurtures the reader and guides them gently into a deeper understanding of themselves as a human being. This book has definitely assisted me in changing the way I live my life. Thank you Wonders and thank you Rene & Maggie.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for students of metaphysics.......2001-10-15

With the assistance of Maggie McGuffin-Gaudette, Rene Gaudette has channeled a "collective energy consciousness of reality" from the 29th dimension that provides six defining statements to help the reader move through a perception of reality beyond the five physical senses and move into unlimited possibilities as "creators of our own existence" unlimited by such concepts or circumstances as destiny or karma. Very highly recommended for students of metaphysics and spiritual philosophy, The Wonders is the result of this channeled body of knowledge and wisdom.

      Book Description

In a unique blend of political, intellectual, and cultural history, Brian Vick explores the world of German nationalism during the first half of the nineteenth century. Vick first presents an original investigation of German conceptions of nationhood in these decades before moving on to analyze the efforts of deputies at the Frankfurt Constituent National Assembly to construct a German national state based on the ethnically diverse German Confederation. He examines debates over fundamental issues that included citizenship qualifications, minority linguistic rights, Jewish emancipation, and territorial disputes, and offers valuable insights into nineteenth-century liberal opinion on the Jewish Question, language policy, and ideas of race.

Contrary to the often invoked dichotomy between cultural and political types of nationalism, in which the German case is usually seen as prototypical of the xenophobic, exclusionary cultural form, this study reveals how German nationalists at Frankfurt interwove cultural and political strands of the national ideal so finely as to sanction equal citizenship status in the proposed state for both the German-Jewish minority and the non-German-speaking nationalities within its boundaries. Yet deputies also contentiously defined Germany's borders so as to incorporate the latter, often unwilling groups, thereby hoping to dominate them both culturally and politically. Conflict was thus as much a part of this "culture of nationhood" as inclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Vick knows his German history!!!.......2002-12-20

Brian Vick has succeeded in bringing life, energy and (indeed!) sexiness to a subject I never thought my students would eat up with such enthusiasm. If you care about Germany, goverment, the Nazi party or race politics, this is a great case history for you.
