Could be better.......2005-11-20
I don't think this is a good book for learning from, but if you know the material, it is a good reference.
Differential equation text.......2005-09-26
The textbook was in good condition and i recieved within a week
Pretty good.......2004-04-26
Not a bad book at all. Physical applications well explained, theory OK but not as good in my opinion. Unfortunately, contains a fair number of typos, and the book is physically weak (the binding of mine is splitting after only 4 months of use) for a book of this price. Still, pretty good overall.
A good differential equations textbook.......2003-08-12
I think the strength of this textbook is the amount of material it encompasses: this book is used in two separate courses in my school--introduction to DE and engineering analysis. I didn't appreciate the textbook so much until I completed my differential equations course and then looked back at the sections on mechanical vibrations to review for my physics course. I then realized that the explanations and derivations were extremely satisfying, much more than your average introductory physics text. Also, the emphasis on the qualitative aspects of DEs, such as slope fields and phase portraits, aid in the coneptual understanding of the otherwise rigorous computation aspects of the topic. My only complaint is that the proofs could've been done in a more understandable manner.
NO!!!!!!!.......2003-07-17
On the whole I wasn't satisfied with the book. In all fairness I did take DE as a summer class. Maybe that's why I don't have fond memories of this book. I'm not an engineering major. I'm not physics major. I found the books almost constant reliance on engineering and physics to introduce concepts to be very disappointing. I think the book lacks balance. Also I found some of the examples lacking. I found better explanations of identical topics in my calculus book (Larson) and in my linear algebra book (Kolman). An engineer that I know tried to use the book to review some stuff and found it fairly useless. Dover makes some good cheap DE book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent review of simulation techniques at an intermediate level........2007-08-21
According to the books I have consulted by S. M. Ross, I consider him to
be a tremendous author, with this book being my absolute favourite. It
is inspirational, clear, creative and (most of all) fun to read.
Starting off from the very basics regarding probability, random numbers
and generation of random variables, Professor Ross steadily guides the
reader through, for instance, simulation with respect to some queueing
systems, validation techniques (e.g. goodness-of-fit tests;
Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests), the standard MCMC-methods and various variance
reduction techniques. The latter chapter is the one that I found most
enlightening including, for instance, a certainly rewarding section on
importance sampling (weighted simulation). Throughout, a lot of
well-chosen examples enhance students/readers understanding and interest
of the subject.
One might note that this is by no means the most advanced or complete book
on Monte Carlo simulation out there, see e.g.
Monte Carlo Statistical Methods (Springer Texts in Statistics)
or
Stochastic Simulation: Algorithms and Analysis (Stochastic Modelling and Applied Probability),
rather it evolves at an intermediate level covering a few more advanced
concepts as, for example, coupling from the past. But, having this in
mind, this is the book to get. Pure concentrated fun (xiii+274 pages).
Final note: In 2006 the fourth edition was launched. [Simulation, Fourth Edition]
A reader from Saudi Arabia.......1999-08-22
This is an excelent textbook explaining what simulation means and how to deepen your knowalge. You have to be a good programmer in order to use this book (and simulation generally)and the author should have added an andex for such a language and how its connection with simualtion ( C or C++) although my experience would elect MATLAB as prefernce!! This text does not requir any prior experience regarding simulatin although taking a course in statistics and probability would be advantageous!!

Geostatistical Reservoir Modeling
ASIN: 0750679336 |
Book Description
SHORT BLURB/BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The hottest, most important topic to reservoir engineers is reservoir simulation. Reservoir simulations are literally pictures of what a reservoir of oil or gas looks, or should look, like under the surface of the earth. A multitude of tools is available to the engineer to generate these pictures, and, essentially, the more accurate the picture, the easier the engineer can get the product out of the ground, and, thus, the more profitable the well will be.
UNIQUE FEATURE: Completely revised and updated throughout, this new edition of a GPP industry standard has completely new sections on coalbed methane, CO2 sequestration (important for environmental concerns), Co2 Flood, more sophisticated petrophysical models for geoscientists, examples of subsidence, additional geomechanical calculations, and much more. What makes this book so different and valuable to the engineer is the accompanying software, used by reservoir engineers all over the world every day. The new software, IFLO (replacing WINB4D, in previous editions), is a simulator that the engineer can easily install in a Windows operating environment. IFLO generates simulations of how the well can be tapped and feeds this to the engineer in dynamic 3D perspective. This completely new software is much more functional, with better graphics and more scenarios from which the engineer can generate simulations.
BENEFIT TO THE READER: This book and software helps the reservoir engineer do his or her job on a daily basis, better, more economically, and more efficiently. Without simulations, the reservoir engineer would not be able to do his or her job at all, and the technology available in this product is far superior to most companies internal simulation software. It is also much less expensive ($89.95 versus hundreds or even thousands of dollars) than off-the-shelf packages available from independent software companies servicing the oil and gas industry. It is, however, just as, or more accurate than these overpriced competitors, having been created by a high-profile industry expert and having been used by engineers in the real world with successful and profitable results.
* This reference is THE industry standard to successfuly modelling reservoirs, obtaining maximum supply and profiting from oil and gas reservoirs
* Includes dowloadable software of the new IFLO reservoir simulation software, that can save your company thousands of dollars
* This edition has been updated to included new sections on environmentally important issues such as CO2 sequestration, coalbed methane,Co2 Flood
* The third edition also provides more sophisticated petrophysical models, examples of subsidence and additional geomechanical calculations

Evolutionary Computation 1: Basic Algorithms and Operators (Evolutionary Computation)
ASIN: 0471669512 |
Book Description
This Third Edition provides the latest tools and techniques that enable computers to learn
The Third Edition of this internationally acclaimed publication provides the latest theory and techniques for using simulated evolution to achieve machine intelligence. As a leading advocate for evolutionary computation, the author has successfully challenged the traditional notion of artificial intelligence, which essentially programs human knowledge fact by fact, but does not have the capacity to learn or adapt as evolutionary computation does.
Readers gain an understanding of the history of evolutionary computation, which provides a foundation for the author's thorough presentation of the latest theories shaping current research. Balancing theory with practice, the author provides readers with the skills they need to apply evolutionary algorithms that can solve many of today's intransigent problems by adapting to new challenges and learning from experience. Several examples are provided that demonstrate how these evolutionary algorithms learn to solve problems. In particular, the author provides a detailed example of how an algorithm is used to evolve strategies for playing chess and checkers.
As readers progress through the publication, they gain an increasing appreciation and understanding of the relationship between learning and intelligence. Readers familiar with the previous editions will discover much new and revised material that brings the publication thoroughly up to date with the latest research, including the latest theories and empirical properties of evolutionary computation.
The Third Edition also features new knowledge-building aids. Readers will find a host of new and revised examples. New questions at the end of each chapter enable readers to test their knowledge. Intriguing assignments that prepare readers to manage challenges in industry and research have been added to the end of each chapter as well.
This is a must-have reference for professionals in computer and electrical engineering; it provides them with the very latest techniques and applications in machine intelligence. With its question sets and assignments, the publication is also recommended as a graduate-level textbook.
Customer Reviews:
for researchers and students.......2006-11-12
Ignore the gushing blurb on the back cover about the book having the latest tools and techniques to let computers learn. While the methods are indeed state of the art when they were written, true learning by computers is still elusive. But so long as you keep that reality in mind, the text can indeed be useful.
We see the span of ideas in evolutionary computing. Aided in no small part by the massive and continued increase in computational power. Fogel laments that the book's ideas are still typically outside what is generally taken to be Artificial Intelligence.
The book strives to be both a text for researchers and for students. Though of course the two groups overlap. For researchers, each chapter has a long list of references to journal papers and monographs, so that you can go directly to many of the original sources. While for students, the chapters come with a non-trivial set of exercises, that usually involve some programming.
The book provides a solid foundation on the subject........2000-03-31
This is an introductory text useful for teaching at graduate levels in Computer/ Information Sciences. The first two chapters provide an overview of the subject and its relationship with other relevant areas. Chapter 4 covers the analysis of the GA with special emphasis to convergence of the algorithm. This is the main chapter of the book.
The presentation style of the book is very beautiful. The book should be read by everyone interested in the disciplines of genetic algorithms and/or soft computing.
