This product works fairly well for me. Being a person that learns more by listening rather than reading, this type of media fits me more than just picking up a book. This set works at a slow enough pace that anyone should be able to pick up on the phonetics of the german language.

My last German language experience was the three years I took in high school back in 1969. The German language has always fascinated me and lately my wife and I have discussed taking a trip to Germany and I looked around until I found this course to help me brush up on the language.
The technique works. I was amazed at how fast what I had learned 38 years ago came back to me. Even had I not remembered any German, the lessons would still have been easy to learn. However, some lessons you will probably have to listen to a couple of times to be sure you master at least 80% of the lesson.
This particular short course is good for one reason and that is to see if you want to learn the German language, never having studied it before. Its an inexpensive way to "get your feet wet". However, if you already know you that want to learn enough to get you past ordering food, asking directions or dealing with vendors, get Level I of the Pimsleur oomprehensive course.
This Conversational German course is the same as the first 16 lessons of the 30-lesson Level I course. I wish I had discovered that before I ordered this shorter course but that's my fault.
I Thought it Would be Harder.......2007-08-03
When I decided I'd like to learn some German, I bought these because they had good rating and a great price. I wasn't disapointed! I can see why Pimsleur's method is "Scientifically Proven"... They start off with a phrase, tell you what each word means, and then repeat it word by word (very clearly pronounced) and you repeat it back, until you can say the whole phrase just as it was spoken to you. Then they add some variations or extra words to the phrase so you get an idea of the grammar (ie. how to turn a phrase into a question, or add "not," "no," "please" or "very" to it.)
Pimsleur uses both male and female speakers so you can hear the realistic ways of saying the female/male words and also you get some variety in the way the words sound.
The method is so effective, that you probably won't even have to listen to each half-hour lesson more than once if you pay attention, as each subsequent lesson build upon what you've just heard and has you continue to repeat it. At the beginning of each lesson the tape has you listen to a conversation, and then you learn how to say the things they just said. At the end, they have you partake in the conversation, and you realize how much you learned.
I highly recommend Pimsleur to anyone. Now I speak German to my family to confuse them, and I'm looking forward to someday going to Germany.

You will hear the same basic phrases (like "scuze me, do you speak German?) over and over again. And two Cd's later you might learn another 2 phrases. I sent the program back.

Although older this is a very good language book. German other than English is quite static regarding everyday conversation, idioms and expressions. Good language books like this one are rare!
Good but Outdated.......2003-04-03
In need of a thorough revision because it doesn't take into account the recent spelling changes and changes in usage over the past 10 and more years. The grammar summaries are well organized and useful. If you need a place to quickly look up German grammar, the second half of the book is excellent.
Easy & Fun way to learn German!.......2000-10-02
Just glance over the vocabulary a few of times & then go for the dialogue. (Of course, read over the translations to help you out). You'd be amazed how quickly you'll begin to pick up vocabulary and sentence patterns. After reading each lesson over a few times -- here & there -- in a matter of two to three days, you'll be ready for the next lesson. I became hooked, because it was fun to look forward to what the next lesson would be about. The dialogues are interesting and, meanwhile, you'll be gaining a wealth of knowledge in vocabulary, and also how Germans form their sentence patterns (not quite the same as English)! Read and enjoy!!
Excellent Resource.......2000-06-20
I have been trying to learn German for some time. I've used several books, but I've found that this is the one I can actually sit down and work with. It provides connected, conversational text in German. I can practice translation to or from English with it. Each lesson provides an extensive vocabulary. At the back of the book is a detailed grammar, and each lesson makes reference to different sections of the grammar. However, it does not force the grammar into the text. When used in conjunction with the available cassettes, I've found this to be faster and more fun than any other German book I've used.

IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS.......2003-03-09
This is a verb skill builder, and that's exactly what it does. It exposes you to different verbs, and their verb tenses, using various situations. It is not intended to be a Spanish course, but a complement to a course. It definitely helped me become more proficient in the use of verbs, and I have finished Pimsleur Levels 1,2 & 3, and Pimsleur Plus. (Pimsleur is an excellent course.)While it is true that there is much spoken English, I felt it helped to solidify the meaning of the Spanish. And, yes, some of the people were rather dramatic in their speech, but some real-life people are also. Such is life! I would enjoy a Skill Builder Two, with exposure to many additional verbs in the different tenses integrated with the use of pronouns. (But, please, not another book! It's unnecessary and the type size is too tiny.)
I was spoiled by Pimsleur.......2002-01-01
After finishing Pimsleur Spanish I and Spanish II (the gold standard for language learning), I thought I would take a break and build more verb vocabulary before begining Pimsleur III. I am being generous with two stars. The main instructor on the tape is also the main Spanish speaker and is a non-native speaker with rapid, pressured speech and everything is said dramatically. The male native speaker I swear is a Hispanic Bella Lagosi, his voice has so much bass it is difficult to understand. These tapes are definiteley low budget. "Master All the Tenses and Speake Fluently" all in four tapes! I should have known better. I am now on Pimsleur III. I think Marcel Danesi needs to listen to them and see how it is done. The idea of verb vocab building is a great idea but this isn't it.

I absolutely loved this set. I've tried other cassettes before, but none I ever tried were quite what I was looking for. Most tapes I've come across were mainly focused on teaching phrases, but they did not fully explain all the different conjugations of the verbs. This set explains them in an easy way, and the lessons are good. I have had Spanish in highschool and some in college, and the primary problem I've had was remembering all the verb tenses. It gave me a wonderful review of the language. This set is also good for people who want to begin to learn Spanish. There is English on this tape, but you are still able to develop a decent amount of listening skills. However, it will not help someone build an extensive vocabulary. What it will do is teach the basic foundations of the language, which is important to learning a language fluently. If you buy a Spanish/English dictionary there really should be no problem. Anyone who is beginning or just wants to brush up their Spanish should have this set!

This book and set of 4 tapes is billed as a way to hear Spanish verbs in conversation. However, as soon as the listener puts in the first tape, he hears mostly ENGLISH! There is no warning on the outer label that the tapes consist not of Spanish alone, but of English alternating with Spanish. There are English explanations of all verb forms, English translations preceding each utterance, and the result is that you hear more English than Spanish. I already speak English well. It is my native tongue. I do not need to hear it again. There are many fine language instruction tapes that have the target language and ONLY the target language. If you are one of those people who do not want to hear English when you are trying to learn Spanish, avoid this set of tapes as if it were covered with anthrax spores. Purchase instead "Practice and Improve Your Spanish" which has realistic Spanish conversations and not a word of English. The infuriating thing is that the cover of the tape set does not tell the purchaser that it is full of English; the purchaser does not find this out until too late. If you need practice hearing English, on the other hand, this tape set may be just the thing you need.

I loved this set so much, I bought it twice. The first time it was actually stolen from my car. I was thinking I might try something else, but I ended up purchasing this set again, and I'm glad I did. I have 4+ years of Spanish instruction and can't seem to get past proficiency to the fluency level. My major problem is conjugating verbs quickly (along with vocab). This set really reviewed all the tenses, slowly and quickly to get me to conjugate quickly. It uses the vosotros form--which is new to me. It doesn't introduce a lot of new vocab, however. I wish it did, but then again the set itself never claimed that vocabulary would be their emphasis.

A bit informal.......2006-01-16
I have purchased several of the German Language series in the past and this was was "pretty good," but not the best. I liked listening and repreating to the native speaker, but the "host" of the show (who had an unusual perspective compared to traditional language tapes) did not make me feel that I was learning enough to function well in the country (I travel to Germany once per year).
I prefer the Q&A strategies of learning languages rather than the Listen & Repeat (which is helpful for pronunciation, don't get me wrong).
Anyway, this is a pretty good series and one that is still good for listenting to in the car for review for your next trip to Deutschland.

If you want to learn a lot of practical German fast and enjoy the process, I recommend you buy 'Conversational German in Nothing Flat'.
I consider myself a bit of a language 'aficionado'. My hobby is to go around to bookstores and to surf the internet finding great deals on foreign language courses.
I travel frequently for business and pleasure and have a great deal of contact with speakers of languages other than English.
I have tried many methods including but not limited to Pimsleur, Living Language, Rosetta Stone, Berlitz and Learn in Your Car and I have NOTHING negative to say about any of them. All have their place. All are good courses in their own right.
That said, I now go on to say that I have tried one particular method and courses in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Arabic, and Mandarin Chinese that I DO consider to be the BEST. It is Language Dynamics. My reasons for this excellent opinion are as follows:
1. This is clearly a niche or non-traditional approach. It didn't go through a traditional test
with a publishing company which probably would have wiped out most of its charm and effectiveness.
2. The creators of these products clearly had one thing in mind when they created them.
Simplicity. They saw things through the eyes of the 'language learner' and not the 'language teacher'. In other words, it is obvious that the producers emphathize with their students, know their fears, understand their needs.
3. Since the students confusion and fear was foremost in their minds, they intentionally developed products that compensated for those fears, encouraged, gave tips, provided review and English. All sorts of help coming at you from all sides.
Since you feel supported from all sides, since the instruction is clear and in English then in the foreign language with a native speaker, you learn quickly.
The part I most like about this approach which is present in every course I have tried is the simple sentence building. I mean, even in Chinese I learned how to speak meaningful and original sentences right away. As anyone can tell you, this is not an easy feat to accomplish and Language Dynamics did it. That's why they are the best.

Useful despite the ridiculous title.......2005-12-15
It *is* possible to teach yourself enough of a language to get by in shops and restaurants. Locals are usually pleased when foreigners try to speak their language, even if the conversation immediately switches to English.
Despite the ridiculous title -- no one can learn conversational German in seven days -- this helpful book gives you a little German for interaction with shop clerks, taxi drivers, waiters, and so on. It's organized around exactly these kinds of speech situations. With a reasonable amount of effort, you'll get some usuable langugage skills.
You'll also receive an introduction to German culture, which is helpful for the first-time visitor. The book is not sensitive to the differences of Austrian or Swiss culture, but then, neither are the Germans.
Conversational German in 7 Days.......2004-05-06
Obviously, nobody is going to learn a language in 7 days, but this series is an excellent introduction for someone who is planning a trip. I have used the German and French versions successfully for years in adult conversational courses for people planning a trip abroad. They will get a feeling not only for the language, but also for the culture.

Excellent Practice for German Verbs.......2001-06-25
I'm a big believer in the neccessity of constantly listening and practicing speaking a language EVERY DAY when trying to learn a new language. Especially if you don't live in or near a country that speaks the language you're trying to learn. For that reason I picked up this book/4 cassette course and have been very pleased with the improvement in my conversations with a German-speaking Austrian friend.
The first half of the book provides verb conjugation charts for 150 verbs. Most of which I found very useful although I was a bit puzzled over the inclusion of "donnern" (to thunder) and "blitzen" (to lightening). Unless one plans to spend a lot of time engaging in weather conversations I would've picked other verbs to fill those slots. Nonetheless, the other verbs are very common and used constantly in conversation.
The second half of the book provides almost an exact word-for-word transcript of everything spoken on the tapes. There are a few discrepancies but not many. The most valuable resource in my opinion are the 4 tapes of extensive German dialogues that illustrate common usage of the verbs and their tenses. The tapes alone are worth the price because you actually don't need the book. These tapes are so complete they can be used as a "learn-while-you-drive" type intermediate course. I wish more book/cassette courses used this combination approach. Many courses assume you will practice only while learning with the book in hand. My problem is that to truly learn a language proficiently I need a lot more time than just those times when I have the book with me. And that's where these tapes truly shine. The book is a good extra and I'm glad they include it. But you could get along just fine simply using the tapes alone. So naturally I use both. Get this course and practice the exercises and you will definitely see improvements in your speaking and comprehension of many troublesome German verbs in all their tenses.
