Book Description
COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CULTURES continues with the features that have made it the best-selling text for the intercultural communication course. The new edition of this leading gives students an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and helps them develop practical skills for improving their communication with people from other cultures. It's renowned for being the only text on the market to consistently emphasize religion and history as key variables in intercultural communication. Packed with the latest research and filled with numerous, compelling examples that force students to examine their own assumptions and cultural biases, this book helps students understand the subtle and profound ways culture affects communication. The book is divided into four interrelated parts: Part I introduces the study of communication and culture; Part II focuses on the ability of culture to shape and modify our view of reality; Part III puts the theory of intercultural communication into practice; and Part IV converts knowledge into action.

An excellent book on cultures, values and how we communicate.......2007-10-08
This is an excellent book that begins with what culture is and how deeply ingrained cultural values are in us all. You will learn the different factors involved in the inculturation process and how the way we perceive and communicate in the world is shaped by the values we hold important. The book has plenty of examples of values many cultures consider important and how this effects their communication. I really enjoyed reading this book. If you communicate, you should read this book!

The Cultural Depth of this book is its True Gem!.......2007-07-11
This book entitled "Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters (2nd edition)" is the most indepth study of cultural mediation that I have ever seen. Anna Mindness does a wonderjul job of helping an interpreter to see where communication barriers exist, and then explain how to bridge those gaps. Why are cultures different? What is cultural mediation? How do you convey a message between conflicting cultures? What tools can effective interpreters use to empower the clients we serve toward better communication when obstacles exist? After reading this book, I found myself making adjustments in interpreting, and was able to see positive results in terms of faithfully communicating source language messages to the recipients. If one reads this book, and applies the principles learned toward their work, it will assist in making them a better interpreter, and ultimately a better communicator between cultures. I highly recommend this book to others and express my thanks to the author for putting the elements of intercultural communication together in one great volume.
a signing book w/o signs.......2006-11-10
i guess i expected this book to have pictures of signing for some reason...i don't know, but once i started to read it i saw how informative it is. i like the book a lot and i believe that Anna Mindess knows what she's writing about. if you want to understand the deaf culture more and are determined to become an interpreter, i think this book is essential.
Must read.......2005-10-15
I think that this book is a must read not only for interpreters but for anybody interested in Deaf culture especially students. This book has helped me in a lot of my classes. It is an easy read especially considering the types of books they normally have us reading for class.
Comparing American Hearing Culture with Deaf Culture.......2005-02-17
In order to understand deaf culture, you need to understand what is standard American culture and then see how it contrasts with deaf culture. Anna Mindess does an excellent job of comparing and contrasting these cultures, with references to cultures from all over the world. She includes insights from respected Deaf members. This is an easy read, not a difficult textbook. I read this with many lightbulbs going "aha". She delves into values, presentation styles, and politeness in both worlds. She provides scenarios with cross cultural perspectives in the doctors' office and the job interview. I have a new understanding of myself as a hearing American and a new appreciation for the cross cultural obstacles that deaf people must face.
You Must Read This Book!.......2004-04-27
I was a little skeptical as to whether I should even buy this book, as it is tauted specifically for interpreters and I am still learning ASL, but this book transcends ASL and Deaf culture to provide a great sociological field of study for everyone who works, plays, indeed LIVES in our society. Talk about providing insight as to the "how and why" we all make social faux pas, and the ways that we can be more open to resolving the mistakes we often make. This book is a must read for anyone who interacts with people of different cultures/backgrounds on a regular basis.
Product Description
Marketing in the early 21st century is dominated by two approaches, neither of which is visible to the naked eye: the use of data to define and shape human affairs into machine-readable form and the effort to create and sustain ongoing two-way relationships with customers. The former is one way human life is being subjugated to the regime of the machine; the latter is one way the individual may one day emerge from within the datascape. A post-modern perspective is used to reveal both the "kaleidoroscope" of data and the "raw immaterials" of relationships in two companion essays.

Rebecca Nailed It.......2007-03-18
Rebecca's review is spot-on. I could read this book several times and get something new out of it each time. Ellis succinctly captures the changes in consumer-marketer interaction and the new 21st century value exchange and does a great job of putting it in historical and philosophical context.
Big Thoughts on Marketing .......2007-03-09
Most books on business (particularly those by self-proclaimed "gurus") seize on a single idea. With terrier-like tenacity they explain it, illustrate it, present case studies of it, then explain it yet again, until a readers feels she's entered some sort of textual version of "Groundhog's Day."
"Marketing in the In-Between," takes the opposite approach. It packs so many clusters of thought, ideas, revelations and connections on every page, the reader will need to repeatedly dip in to glean all the thoughts. It challenges readers to truly ponder and to question the basic precepts and practices upon which marketing is based.

Clear-eyed and honest examination of an icon.......2003-09-19
First of all, this book is NOT a biography of Diana, nor does it pretend to be. The cover states clearly that it is about "the love-hate relationship between Diana and the Media." Therefore anyone demeaning it because the cover isn't "pretty" or because it may be factually inaccurate by moments about incidents surrounding her death and funeral are completely missing the point. This book is not, strictly speaking, about the events of Diana's life but about how they were interpreted. And Mr. Levine shares some very unconventional, intelligent opinions on that subject. Some of it I disagree with (the life and continuing media fascination in Jacqueline Onassis disputes his assertion that the public loves celebrities for their accessibility; Jackie O was the most remote of celebrities and in her case it was her very unknowability that still intrigues us). But on one very important point, I agree with Mr. Levine whole-heartedly. In purely feminist terms, Diana was a heroine, not a victim. She was NOT a victim of the media or, ultimately, the Royal Family. She used the media and survived the Royal Family. And the reason the public adored her is that she went through the same stages every woman does, just on a grander scale and with better clothes. Diana was disappointed by love, longed for direction and meaning in life, loved her children, and was insecure about her looks. And before our eyes, she grew up to be a symbol of grace and generosity. She was transformed by her pain and hardship and she was victorious against the power elite -- and she used the press to win. Diana's memory deserves to be celebrated, not tsk-tsked over as though she had been some poor, helpless little thing. Diana accomplished so much with her own charm, energy and ingenuity. Ultimately, she was the victim of a drunk driver, and that could happen to any of us.
Excellent.......1999-09-03
An excellent book. Complements Claridge's "Blair'sBritain" as a description of The Great Madness that overtook England in September 1997.
this is a magnificent book -- explains media hype very well.......1999-04-07
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the relationship between the media and a celebrity..I believe the critics of the book have missed the point entirely. The book is not about Diana as much as it is about her relationship with the media. You can take Diana's name out of the book and insert another celebrity's name. You would come up with a similiar tome. This is such a good book I have recommended it to my former professors at Wake Forest University in the communications department. Good job, Mr. Levine!
This is a very disappointing book........1999-03-28
I would never have purchased this book except for the fact that I collect books on Diana. As I look through my collection, I believe, this book possesses the ugliest cover of all my books on Diana which is enough to turn one off.
As I compare some of the facts mentioned to the same facts in my other books on Diana, there appears to be many inconsistencies in dates, times, and places. The inaccurarcies makes one wonder if there is any truth in Diana's symbiosis with the media.
This is a book one needs to purchase only if one collects books on Diana; ...
Too much speculation; not enough fact.......1998-12-31
I had high hopes for this book, but it was ultimately disappointing. And no, I do not worship at the altar of Diana. As a matter of fact, I found the book to be more sympathetic to her than I thought it would be. Most of this 350 page snoozer is the author's own speculation and theory about why the media and the public were so enamoured of Diana. He manages to get some facts wrong, notably that Queen Elizabeth bowed her head 'when Diana's cortege drove away from Westminster Abbey'. Everyone knows that the queen bowed her head as the cortege was approaching Westminster Abbey. The author literally doesn't know if Diana was coming or going! I realize this sounds petty, but if Levine can't even get this detail correct, how much can I buy into anything else he says? ...
Book Description
Much has been written on the economic dimensions of U.S.-Mexican business relations but little on the more subtle and sensitive cultural issues involved. In this revised edition of her popular book, Eva Kras has provided us with an update in which she confronts the problems that arise out of the cultural differences between U.S. and Mexican managers. Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1989, the Maquiladoras have increased in number, the NAFTA agreement was ratified, and business practices have changed and evolved in response. Kras has expanded her analysis of these developments and their meaning for interaction between U.S. and Mexican managers. She thus offers the reader a sharper image and a more penetrating analysis of her subject in light of these developments. This practical handbook is based on extensive interviews with Mexican and U.S. managers. Kras compares the critical areas of a managerial setting in which the values and behaviors of the two cultures differ and offers specific recommendations on how to ameliorate the disparities between them. Kras is a cross-cultural management consultant to Mexican and U.S. businesses.

Management in Two Cultures.......2007-03-12
Much has been written on the economic dimensions of U.S.-Mexican business relations, but little on the more subtle and sensitive cultural issues involved. Eva Kras has now provided us with a book that confronts head on the problems that arise out of the cultural diferences between U.S. and Mexican managers. And it could be not be more timely.
Mexico's ambitious Maquiladora program - designed to foster the establishment of foreign, especially U.S., maunfacturing plants in Mexico along the U.S. border - has been strikingly successful. All along the border jointly management industries have sprung up. The result has been a significant increase in the amount of contact between managers from the two cultures and a dramatic rise in the stakes involved in their developing effective working relationships.
This practical handbook is based on extensive interviews with Mexican and U.S. managers. Ms. Kras compares the critical areas of a managerial setting in which the values and behaviors of the two cultures differ, and offers specific recommendations as to how the disparities between them can be handled. In the process, she deals realistically with the problems and misunderstandings that arise between Mexican and U.S. managers and demonstrates clearly how simple but hard-to-achieve changes in attitude and style can resolve them.

Good guide.......2005-07-25
Very good analysis of US and Mexican cultures and management styles. Easy to read, great for employees working in both US and Mexican business cultures.
Best management comparison book.......2005-07-06
I took a class from Eva about 8 years ago in Guadalajara, Mex. and used her book as a textbook. To this date, I still use it as reference and good refresher about the cultural differences in management between the US and Mex. It's easy to read and very informative.
Excellent.......2000-12-01
When I moved to Mexico one year ago to run a division for my company, I read many books -- this one is the best!
It clearly outlines differing cultural norms and pitfalls.
I did feel some of the "case study" scenarios were a bit contrived and awkward, but this book nails the central issues facing American managers in Mexico.
Mexico can be a great place to work and live, particularly if you are sensitive to the business culture and its nuances.
Experience is the only true teacher, but this book makes the lessons far less painful.
Enjoy!

complete accurate.......2007-09-03
the book is such an accurate portrayle of our hispanic culture. some one who is ignorant might see it as a racist view but you have to be able to be open minded.
Great book I identified and had similar stuggles growing up as a Mexican in Los Angeles. .......2007-06-01
What a great book. I was able to identify with the author. Being raised in Los Angeles by Mexican parents, and only speaking spanish till the second grade, was equally shocking as it was for Ernesto Caravantes.
Great Book. Identifies the main problem with Hispanics in the USA and why they rarely get ahead........2007-05-31
As a former school teacher, this book was refreshing to read. From first hand experience, my worst students were always the hispanic kids. I felt more like a baby sitter with them. They were constantly absent and had no interest in learning (for the most part). Naturally, many dropped out. The hispanic kids in my classes were usually disruptive and interfered with the white and Asian students who generally were eager to learn. Another thing is that the hispanic kids would always mark their desks & books with graffiti, showing they have no respect for anything. My advice would be to separate the hispanic kids from the others because the hispanics severely interfere with standard coursework and thus hold the entire class back.
Excellent title!.......2007-05-23
This book highlights the many problems currently facing the Latino community with regards to education. A must read.
Clipping their own wings.......2007-05-14
This should be a required reading for teachers, educators. administrators and anyone who is in that field. It might be a good idea to translate it into Spanish for those who do not speak English and motivate them and their children to better their chances by simply learning English.

This workbook was a required text for one of the classes in the ASL interpreting program I am involved in. It is a wonderful tool that illustrates how cultural differences color the interpreting process.
