Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park

1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!

2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.

3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.

4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.

5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

Book Description

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.

Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend

In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:

• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him

• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

• How to relate to your dog on a canine level

• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners

• Why every dog needs a job

• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family

• The difference between discipline and punishment

• And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but NOT a training book.......2007-10-16

If you enjoy watching Cesar Milan's show, you'll enjoy this book. It talks about how he entered the U.S. (illegally, which he admits), and with some luck and a lot of determination, followed his dream to become a dog trainer. Interesting if you enjoy that sort of thing. However, the subtitle of this book is "The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems." But is there anything on housebreaking? No. Preventing chewing on things? No. Preventing your dog from jumping up on people? A little. There is in fact very, very little on addressing everyday problems. There is a LOT on running your large-breed dog until he's exhausted. There is a lot on being the "pack leader" and addressing your dog with "calm-assertive" behavior. That's fine, but there was almost no specific information on exactly HOW to do that.

He discusses being successful in rehabilitating problem dogs, but he never actually describes HOW he did that. He also uses a chapter discussing the case of Diane Whipple, who was killed by two out-of-control large dogs owned by inexperienced and ignorant lawyers who adopted the dogs from a convicted felon. Milan believes he could have rehabilitated one of them, but rightfully points out no one would ever have trusted the dog after it had killed someone. Why he wanted to insert himself into the process is a mystery to me, unless he just wanted bragging rights.

Cesar Milan also advocates running your dog on a tread-mill, which sounds like a recipe for disaster, and apparently was, for at least one dog who was injured at his facility. (This event was not discussed in the book.)

His emphasis on exercise and "calm-assertive" leadership behavior could be helpful for new pet owners who think it's ok to just put the dog out in the backyard for exercise. It's not, and Milan explains why. Owning a dog takes a big commitment of time and energy, and Milan stresses why the exercise component is so necessary.

However, if you want to teach your dog basic house-training or basic obedience or how to be a good canine companion, this book has less for you than you might expect by the sub-title. If you want to learn more about Cesar Milan personally, you may find it interesting. I'd suggest getting it from the library rather than buying it.

If you want a book about understanding your dog's emotions and how they affect training, try reading "For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend" by Patricia McConnell. This is a much better and more practical book geared to reading and understanding the emotions behind your dog's physical behavior and expressions.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2007-10-14

This is old-school "you are the pack leader" rubbish. This is just a guy who somehow got picked up by television and made an icon, for reasons I can't fathom. He's not saying anything new. He's just a common self-promoter. The whole idea of dominance training has been debunked anyway. And as for his idiotic idea that dogs should walk behind their lord and master...not only do I want to know what my dogs are sniffing or looking at, so I can interrupt negative or possibly dangerous behaviors, I want their companionship. I don't want to lead a parade.

By the way, a dog was seriously injured at this fool's "training camp" (he's cashed in big on his moment of fame) because it was left unobserved on a treadmill and fell off of it, while tethered to it. Pretty ugly picture, don't you think? (There was a lawsuit, which I beleive ended in a payoff...uh, settlement.) Breaking down dogs by exhausting them is not training them. I'd give this no stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-10-13

Good book. Provides a good understanding of the dog mindset. Enjoyed it and found it helpful but was more high level than I was hoping for, would have preferred more practical everyday tips for the everyday dog.

5 out of 5 stars Give This One Five Dog Biscuits.......2007-10-12

I'm a dog lover, advocate for animals' rights, and volunteer with a Weimaraner rescue group. And okay, I admit, I tend to attach human qualities to the four dogs we own. All are rescued dogs - two Black Labs, an Australian Blue Heeler, and a Weimaraner. All have their own quirks and behavioral issues. What Cesar Millan states is true: dogs are a pack animal and respond to this milieu. And what I kept forgetting before I read this book was that I'm pack leader, so would find myself following the pack, so to speak. I learned some valuable lessons with this book and it's helped tremendously with our Weimaraner, Emma Blue, and her problem with separation anxiety. Excercise is essential, as are discipline and affection. It amazed me how quickly our dogs responded to this regimen. Thanks, Cesar!

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-10-12

I have 2 mutts.
So a few people told me I should read about this guy and I did. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how any dog owner/lover would agree to any of these methods. To me, it's about a power struggle and dominance. Sure, your dog should know you're in charge.. but making them run 6 hours a day is NOT training, it's downright abuse. Our dogs should be obedient because they respect and love us, not fear us. If that's the relationship you want with your pets, fine I guess.

Moreover, the entire book is about how great he thinks he is and the writing's terrible. Don't waste your money. Spend it on treats for your fur-kids.

I read this when it was first published and then bought it for each staff member as one of our required primers. I also gave one to each of my Board members. If there is one book I wish had existed 30 years ago, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars A Relational Guide to Confrontation.......2007-08-24

In this example filled guide to crucial confrontations - those times when holding someone accountable is critical to what is important to you - the authors present a relational model for what to do as you become aware of a gap between your expectations and what has or is happening in the specific situation.

The concept approaches the crucial confrontation in `before', `during', and `after' steps; requiring you to spend some `before' time deciding `what' is the specific issue to be addressed and `if' you should enter into the crucial confrontation - what do you desire out of the relationship is a key question to help identify the real issue. Also in the `before' phase, you are asked to master your emotions by considering not only `your story', but also by considering the other person's context and thus `their story' - are they really doing this because they want to fail with you? Probably not - they just have an entirely different perspective (their story) on the situation!

The `during' step requires that you confront with safety and stay with the facts; assuring the other party that mutual respect and mutual purpose are present. The `after' step requires agreement on an action plan and follow-up. Along the way, there are tools to avoid getting side-tracked, with ample examples of situations that may arise and suggestions for dealing with them. The book is recommended for anyone interested in improving any of their many relationships, business or personal.

A must read for supervisors and managers. With outstanding proven approaches to knowing what you want from a conversaton, what the other wants, and watching out for the relationship. Found it useful at work as a reference book, plus a great read for personal relationship communications as well. Would suggest reading Crucial Conversations first to really get the full view.

exceeded my expectations...a must read for all those seeking practical strategies to lessen the 'drama' in face-to-face accountability discussions.

One of the best Sylvia Brown books I've read. A child would enjoy the contents. Sylvia and her son have done a wonderful job of allowing us a look into the souls of these beautiful animals. I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to share this experience with them. I highly recommend this book to any animal lover.

I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.

1 out of 5 stars Who needs this? .......2007-06-12

If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.

It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.

One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.

Are you now, or have you ever been, in relationships with family, friends, or mates who have been verbally abusive? Is your happiness with someone you love continually threatened by interactions that continually undermine your self-esteem? Do you feel trapped in a relationship that keeps decaying in a downward spiral of overt or passive-aggressive abuse?

If so, this book could be your life raft, either carrying you toward repair of the existing relationship or the effects of past relationships or offering liberation from your current confusion. Its practical approach can help clear your head and possibly change your life. The only criticism that I and other readers have is that the author assumes verbal abuse is almost always directed by males toward females, which, in my experience and that of others I know, is not necessarily the case. Highly Recommended.

Book Description

If you or someone you know answers "yes" to one or more of the following questions, this book is required reading:

Does your partner seem irritated or angry at you several times a week?
Does he deny being angry when he clearly is?
Do your attempts to discuss feelings of pain or emotional distress leave you with the feeling that the issue has not been resolved?
Do you frequently feel perplexed and frustrated by his responses, as though you were each speaking a different language?

Almost everyone has heard of or knows someone who is part of a verbally abusive relationship-if they're not involved in one themselves. In The Verbally Abusive Relationship, you'll find validation and understanding-it's "not all in your head"-and encouragement for your efforts to change the situation. In this expanded second edition, author Patricia Evans explores the damaging effects of verbal abuse on children and the family, and offers valuable insight and recommendations to therapists, as well as those who seek therapeutic support.

1 out of 5 stars What a horrible piece of bitterness.......2007-09-22

I read this entire book at my wife's request - but the book was thrown against the wall more than once. I guess if you listen to this pompous and self-righteous author, that makes me an abuser. Of course, her main point was that if I am a man, I am an abuser. You could hear the bitterness of her probably coming from a bad relationship.

Of course women love this book. According to his author, a women is not responsible for her own happiness, her husband is. You don't have to get very far into the book to see her ridiculous list of things that identify an abusive husband - she's not happy, she doesn't feel understood, she is confused, her husband gets angry, her husband doesn't tell her his feelings, her husband tells her his feelings.

Then you go on to some more indicators. What "red flags" should a woman look for to call her husband an abuser? If he brings her gifts, if he takes her to a nice restaraunt, if he says he loves her, if he doesn't understand her, if she doesn't understand him, if he talks to her, if he doesn't talk to her, if he asks her if everything is OK, if he pays too much attention to her, if he doesn't pay enough attention to her.

Then this author goes on with the feel-good psycho-babble. If you feel it - it is true. Do you feel alone - you have been abandoned. Do you feel sad - you are abused. Do you feel like you don't understand your husband - you are being deceived.

How did she get the information for this book? By talking to women - only women. Not one single man. She didn't determine if what the woman was telling her was accurate or a complete fictional account. Why wouldn't she talk to men? Because we're all abusers - why would she waste her time talking to any of us. This bitter lady is a certified man-hater and it appears to be her goal in life to break up as many marriages as possible.

She offers about 3 pages on how to keep a relationship together - but not before telling the woman that the only real solution is to leave your husband if he is an abuser - and we're all abusers. She goes on and on about how there is almost no chance whatsoever salvaging a marriage, so you might as well divorce your husband and live alone for the rest of your life.

This is a horrible hate-filled book and it saddens me how many marriages this bitter woman will destroy.

4 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-09-11

My daughter said, "How does one study verbal abuse? The abuser denies it". So, this book is soooo helpful in describing the situation. Finally, someone understands! The author puts into words experiences so many have, yet cannot share. Not being able to share and be understood is a prison to the soul. The author also has some answers, and I'm sure more will come, even from the reader! If you think you're crazy, the "only one" who is unable to relate to your spouse, or a failure as a woman/spouse, a must read!

3 out of 5 stars Relationship analysis.......2007-08-30

This book is very "text bookish" and I feel it would be beneficial to have written this book as more of a story line and not so much repetition. I was hopefull that Patricia could have focused more on the "abuser" becoming less abusive and more cooperative with his mate. I do like the short questionares she recommends to take to determine an abusive status in a relationship. There is truely much to gain by this book, but I feel a more personable approach would have been better.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life...........2007-08-12

With friends and family trying to convince me to stay with my husband...because he was the life of the party, so sweet and kind to them, and because I would be homeless and penniless if I left...
This book saved my life. I went from a "full-of-life" woman to a weak and depressed shell-of-a-person. I was so sad and exhausted from his verbal abuse that I didn't want to go on living.
So here I am, homeless and penniless..with nothing but the clothes on my back and Patrica's book under my arm. At least I know I am not crazy and that I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
With all my heart...thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful advice on protecting yourself from verbal abuse.......2007-08-10

Verbal abuse might not be as visible as physical abuse, but it can be just as damaging. What makes this type of abuse so insidious is that the victim blames herself, further weakening her self-esteem, instead of placing the responsibility firmly where it belongs - on the abuser. Patricia Evans unmasks verbal abuse in all its hurtful guises, from the most obvious such as yelling and name-calling, to the covert manipulations of sabotage, double-speak and denial. Evans bases her insights and conclusions on extensive research. She uses real-life situations and dialogue to shed light on this dark, destructive ailment - though she sometimes can be repetitive and unnecessarily complex. Her in-depth analysis of the dynamics of verbal abuse may be more suited to therapists and researchers than to victims seeking coping advice. Evans would be the first to say that if you are in imminent danger, get professional help or a cop. We recommend her book to anyone who might be in a verbally abusive relationship or who cares about someone who is. Therapists and counselors will also benefit from this well-researched thesis.

I used this in training sessions with my managers. Great book and worth reviewing/re-reading from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Lessons Equal Coachable Moments.......2007-02-24

The reason I like this book is that it breaks many management and supervisory roles into very simple actions that create perfect coaching goals. As a Leadership Coach I am able to use samples of this book to assist in drawing a picture of the behaviours that we want our managers and supervisors to perform; (Much more fun than our current list of competencies.) The book is not quite as strong when discussing organizational change but it does demonstrate that all organizational change must start at the base of the organization with support from the Top. A simple read with great messages.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top Little Business Books with Big Impact according to About: Human Resoures.......2007-01-31

According to Susan Heathfield, editor of About: Human Resources, Your Guide to Human Resources Newsletter: This continuing favorite may be hard to find but it's worth the search. Join a supervisor who is transported to a state in which he can suddenly "see" the real impact his actions have on whether staff is enabled to think, contribute, and find meaning in work. Experiment and learn with him as he changes.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for new managers & supervisors.......2007-01-11

This quick read brings valuable insight for new managers in a fun manner. The author's use of corporate characters and the personas employees take on are right-on for many typical business scenarios. If you are looking to improve employee satisfaction and grow as a manager, this book may provide insight and spur ideas of your own to implement.

It's highly recommended for clients of Battson Coaching who are first-time managers.

4 out of 5 stars A light, fun read on how to Empower and Manage your Team.......2006-12-30

What if you could travel to the "12th dimension" and see what people think of themselves - along with the manifestations Zapping (motivating) and Sapping (de-motivating) that occur every day as people interact. Joe and Ralph do exactly this and along the way discover what works and what doesn't when it comes to empowering and managing teams.

The first three steps to Zapp!...
1. Maintain Self-esteem.
2. Listen and Respond with Empathy.
3. Ask for Help in Solving Problems.
...lead to the Soul of Zapp: Offer Help Without Taking Responsibility.

The books goes on to describe how these Sapping (de-motivating) events occur, their results, how to counteract them and in turn, motivate your team. Also some general (but good) content on what Management and Team Leads should be focusing on.

The best thing is that this book has a CD-rom that gives you simplified with tests every one the the chapters. You can practice your knowledge gained at the end of every chapter using written tests.

I would have liked if the images had color. They're all white and black or drawings (which are really good too).

2 out of 5 stars ICKY BOOK.......2007-01-20

As a speech pathology student who was required to take an anatomy class with this being the required text - this book was horrible. In each chapter there is sooo much missing information and holes and gaps in the information that it made learning anatomy that much harder. The only good thing about this book is that it comes with a helpful anatomy cd for the cdrom... i preferred the Netter anatomy book instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, Great CD.......2007-01-04

This book helped me to get a great grade in my class. The diagrams and illustrations are very helpful. The CD-Rom is extremely helpful since it has color illustrations and quizzes in each section. I really advise all users to utilize the CD-Rom!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book...........2007-07-29

This is a great book with useful techniques that you can learn to become a better communicator. I read this a couple of years ago, and started implementing the tips, and I swear people responded to me better.

However, I only gave this book 4 stars because, due to the many subjects it covers, it doesn't cover all the subjects as thoroughly. But it is a very useful book on communication, and a great book to jumpstart your way to becoming a better communicator.

Other books I recommend: Everyday Negotiations (great book!), The Assertiveness Workbook, Fight Your Fear and Win, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Personal & Professional Communication Skills.......2007-05-18

This communication skills handbook is a good one to add to your library. Sometimes people need to be refreshed on old skills, especially if one does not attend any type of annual conferences or seminars to rejuvenate and motivate one's performance. Noted content topics include: (1)Skills for Bridging the Interpersonal Gap (2)Barriers to Communication (3)Listening Skills (4)Reflective Listening (5)Reflective Responses (6)Reading Body Language (7)Assertive Skills (8)Conflict Management Skills and (9)Collaborative Problem Solving.

People skills are necessary for all areas of life (familial, workplace, social, and religious). This is a great book for Managers to invest in and provide copies to Administrative Professionals, etc. in the organization. Teachers this is a great book to have on your shelf of books to share with the eager and hungry readers. Also a great gift for teens or college bound students.

5 out of 5 stars People Skills:How to AsertYourself. Listen to Others, and Resolve Conflicks.......2007-02-08

This is an very detailed people skills guide on how to be sucessful in today's complex world. I found it a very high caliber read about communication.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-02

This is a wonderful book by Robert Bolton on people skills focusing on effective communication particularly listening skills, assertion techniques, effective conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving techniques.

The book is very useful and practical. A good manager achieves results through people hence it is critical for managers to acquire interpersonal skills and effective communication is an important vehicle for achieving this. Some people, due to their cultural and religious backgrounds, fail to be effective managers due to lack of assertiveness. This book provides the techniques to help readers achieve this.

Conflict is inevitable in organisations due to various reasons. Team leaders need to learn the techniques of effectively handling conflict so that the effectiveness of an organisation is optimal. The author explains how collaborative problem solving results in optimal outcomes.

The author also discusses the various barriers to effective communication and suggests practical ways to overcome the barriers.

One common problem that I have observed in my organisation and in myself is that we are often not good listeners. We often fail to get to understand what the other party is really saying and thus lose opportunities for resolving problems. The author methodically explains effective ways to enhance our listening skills and thus help build good interpersonal relationships and hence more productive and motivated people.

The book is valuable and practical and readers should benefit immensely from studying it.

4 out of 5 stars Useful insights, practical exercises........2006-08-06

Written in 1979, People Skills is a classic in the field of communication skills. Like many people, I decided to read this book after it turned up on a must-read list for consultants and business people. The book offers a useful and practical guide to someone looking to improve their effectiveness in interpersonal situations. It is broken down into Listening Skills, Assertion Skills, and Conflict Management Skills.

The problem that this book has is shared by many books of its kind. There are several really good points and ideas which need to be padded out into a longer form. People Skills was quite a bit longer than it needed to be, and this detracted from its overall strength.

I found it an interesting compliment to Getting To Yes (Fisher & Ury), which is still my favorite book on conflict resolution and negotiation. Many of the same points are covered, but from a different point of view.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Relationship counselor John Gray focuses on the differences between men and women--men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, after all--and offers a simple solution: couples must acknowledge and accept these differences before they can develop happier relationships. In this unabridged version, Gray gives a spirited delivery of his message, especially when role-playing typical male/female interactions. Although it takes some time to adjust to his slightly nasal tone, the information is sound and gives both men and women helpful hints on improving themselves and their union. (Running time: 9.5 hours, 6 cassettes) --Sharon Griggins

Book Description

Popular marriage counselor and seminar leader John Gray provides a unique, practical and proven way for men and women to communicate and relate better by acknowledging the differences between them.

Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets.

Using this metaphor to illustrate the commonly occurring conflicts between men and women, Gray explains how these differences can come between the sexes and prohibit mutually fulfilling loving relationships. Based on years of successful counseling of couples, he gives advice on how to counteract these differences in communication styles, emotional needs and modes of behavior to promote a greater understanding between individual partners. Gray shows how men and women react differently in conversation and how their relationships are affected by male intimacy cycles ("get close", "back off"), and female self-esteem fluctuations ("I'm okay", "I'm not okay"). He encourages readers to accept the other gender's particular way of expressing love, and helps men and women learn how to fulfill each other's emotional needs.

With practical suggestions on how to reduce conflict, crucial information on how to interpret a partner's behavior and methods for preventing emotional "trash from the past" from invading new relationships, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is a valuable tool for couples who want to develop deeper and more satisfying relationships with their partners.

5 out of 5 stars If you are having a hard time in your relationship..........2007-09-03

I am a skeptic when it comes to self-help books, so I wasn't too excited when my husband purchased Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus for the two of us to read.
We had been together for seven years and our relationship was at an all time low. A number of things had happened and we had grown apart.

Then we read the book and saw ourselves on most of the pages. Many thoughtful and open discussions followed. It was the beginning of a recovery process which lasted a few months and has a perfect outcome. We are so close and so in love now - the centers of each others universe.

My favorite piece of advice from this book is setting time aside to spend with each other uninterrupted by TV, reading, etc. We do this at least a couple of times a week. Sometimes we just sit together in silence and relax; sometimes we discuss something trivial that's on our minds... These are perfect moments.

Obviously, it is hard for me to write all this because it is very personal. However, I sincerely hope to help another couple through this book and save them months of anguish. I wish someone had given us Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus a few months earlier.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-08-30

Almost everything you wanted to know about the opposite sex!
Just great! A must have!

2 out of 5 stars Why is this book so popular?.......2007-08-24

The reasons why this book gets two stars from me are as follows:

POSITIVE:

- Gray did make a few good, common sense points: Do nice things for your partner, don't try to fix your partner, be direct in making requests.

- Some real-life examples are true to life (such as the wife who keeps trying to coax an answer to "Is anything wrong?" out of her mate.)

NEGATIVE

- Gray is extremely self-righteous, which is very annoying.

- The book is VERY repetitive, which makes it hard to read.

- The Mars/Venus analogy gets annoying after a while.

- His gender assumptions are extremely rigid, without much room for individuality.

- Some of his examples are hair-raising: he tells the story of how his wife tore giving birth, and ran out of pain killers a week after delivery. When he came home from work, she told him that she was in pain all day and felt abandoned. His reaction? He exploded, shouted at her, and stormed off. What normal man would do such a thing??

- His dislike for the word "could" is hard to explain. He claims that "could" must be replaced with "would", or the husband will not respond to any requests.

- He claims that it is natural and important for women to fall into deep depressen regularly where childhood issues resurface and she has nohing left to give this world. If her man does not support her, she will fall into a panic. WHAT?!?

- His phrase dictionary is plain ridiculous. Here is an example: If a woman says "I am so tired, I can't do anything" a man will hear "...Picking you was a big mistake" unless he has read Gray's true interpretation. Uh-huh!

- The most offensive part of the book, though, is this assertion in the introduction: "About 10 percent of women will relate more to being from Mars. This is often simply a result of being born with higher testosterone levels than most other women." WHAT?!? If my readers don't agree with me, then they have a hormonal problem. This statement unsubstantiated, false, nonsensical, and brazen. Interestingly, he does not address the fact that some men may not find themselves in these pages, either.

Overall, the book deserves two stars, considering that it had a little bit of merit to it.

Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

4 out of 5 stars Animals do indeed communicate information to us.......2007-10-02

This book was recommended to me several years ago, and since reading it I regularly refer to it as an informational resource. On many occasions I have been amazed at how relevant the information about a particular creature was to what I was experiencing at the time it happened to cross my path. I found Animal Speak to be of such value to me that I chose to include an excerpt from it within my own book. As such, I highly recommend it to any person who has interest in the spiritual path.

Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small

Great book, I had seen Ted Andrews in person, what an incredible man. I already had so many books at the time, I did not buy it then and have him sign it. But recently it is the time of skunks and well, I have just seen/smell for several weeks. My friend has the book, and she read me the section about skunks, and it was amazing. how much of what it had to say about skunks, from strength, relationships, boundaries, sensuality, were the things I was looking at in my life. So I decided to buy the book after all, and it is a great thing.

5 out of 5 stars Animal Speak Still Going Strong.......2007-08-11

This purchase was a replacement for an fifteen year old copy that I simply wore out. I bought the first copy when I met Ted Andrews in 1987, I teach neo-shamanism and suggest that all of my students have this book and it's accompaniment "Nature Speak." Ted is a naturalist and knows animals and nature first hand. He combines his knowledge with ancient and modern myth and lore to give us a comprehensive guide to how animals interact in our metaphysical world.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Information about animal symbolism.......2007-07-31

"The most common belief in many societies is that spiritual guides often use animals or animal imagery to communicate their purpose and roles to humans." -From the book.

I was drawn to this book several years ago when I had a recurring dream about an animal and felt sure that there was an important message in it for me. I have used it several times since to look up the meaning associated with certain animals that came across my path. We may think that these encounters are random or coincidental, but they're not. Often we don't see signs that are right in front of us. Does it take a billboard to get you to take notice? For me, sometimes it does, but I have tried to slow down and pay attention to these subtle natural nudges because a lot of times, they contain a powerful message or just good advice! Just as symbols, seeing/encountering certain animals may, on the surface have no meaning to us, but our subconcious knows what it means.

There is a HUGE amount of information in this book. It is very interesting to read. In addition to finding out the meanings/messages of animals, it also tells you how to find out what your nature totems are and how to work with that energy.

In chapter 4 'Reading signs and omens in nature' there are charts for the meanings or symbolism of certain trees and flowers and the positive/negative qualities of colors.

Highly interesting book and great to have for reference.
