2 out of 5 stars Heere we go again..........2007-01-14

Another book fawning all over Toyota and the Japanese as being the absolute masters of production. No one but them can possibly produce anything properly. Oh, wait, did this book mention that it was AMERICANS who showed the Japanese modern production methods immediately after WWII? By golly, they left out that little detail.. you probably don't hear that too much, but look it up if you don't believe me. For all of the 1950's and most of the 1960's, "Made in Japan" was not a good thing to see on a product. Only in the past 30 years have they gotten good. I won't deny that American companies have gotten sloppy, and they need a cold hard slap to wake them up. But, I think that some of these books go a little overboard heaping praise on Japanese methods.

5 out of 5 stars Best Primer on Lean Manufacturing.......2007-01-14

This easy to read book outlines all the concepts of lean manufacturing in an entertaining and understandable manner. I make it required reading for all my Manufacturing Engineers, Department Managers and Supervisors.

5 out of 5 stars Keep It Simple Stupid.......2007-01-12

Many books on lean manufacturing today try to over complicate things by adding in a lot of jargon and so called smarts. This book doesn't do that, and the the beauty is the reader really gets to the heart and soul of lean manufacturing with being bogged down by some academic trying to tell you how smart he is about it.

Joe's gets all the major points of the Toyota manufcaturing, and the way it puts in context makes it clear and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Useful book.......2007-01-05

This is a really simple, easy to read book for people who want to know things about manufacturing.

2 out of 5 stars Simplistic but True.......2006-05-07

This book is simplistic in its approach, but it illustrates very well our society's tendency to overcomplicate processes to the point the original objective becomes almost unattainable.

5 out of 5 stars This one is the BEST! - Highly recommended!.......2007-09-20

After reading half a dozen of this type of book, THIS is the one I bought! Covers nearly every aspect of the music industry including publishing, legal and management, merchandising, touring, record contracts, film licensing, the internet/ new media, etc. It even has a section on classical music. The only thing I don't like is the author's liberal (pun intended) use of leftist quips. Not appropriate. What sets it apart from others of its type though is the author gives clear and specific advice on nearly every issue, `Check for this,' `Avoid that,' etc. Very helpful to anyone who is seeking to enter the industry in any aspect. Buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars All You Need To Know About the Music Business.......2007-07-21

Am trying to learn more about the music business to help out a friend and the book is great as there is a lot to know and it is informative.

5 out of 5 stars One hell of a book!.......2007-06-01

I've read over two-dozen books on the music business- this is the best. If you only get a few bks on the biz, get this.

Something "Search Inside" doesn't tell you: Passman allows you to read this book choose-you-own-adventure style by telling you what you can skip if you are on the "Fast Track" or what you should not skip if you are on the "Intermediate Track."

4 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-05-04

This book was a good read for those who really want to know the ins and outs of the industry. I am an indie artist myself so I would like to think I don't have it so harshly. Other than that, it was very informative.

3 out of 5 stars How the Traditional Music Business Works.......2007-03-08

This is a great book if your looking to be socialized into the way the industry works (or doesn't as the case may be). If you read it from the perspective of; how the labels are ripping off fans, their employees (bands), and generally mismanaging themselves, then you can get a good understanding of where the opportunities are.

I'm not suggesting that this isn't a worthwhile read as some aspects still apply and it'll serve as a great history book of the way things used to be. That said, the need to actually cover how much is an acceptable level to be ripped off is obviously ridiculous and speaks volumes about the state of the industry. I have yet to find any other industry that generally accepts that there are acceptable levels of getting ripped off. I also find it offensive that the author (well established entertainment lawyer) suggests that there's really nothing wrong with lawyers representing both labels and artists. His message there can be boiled down to "it's a small field and the way things are...so get over it."

These are some of the fundamental reasons why the music establishment is going the way of ancient Greece. Industry execs have lost the passion of the music over the greed of their financial requirements, and the lawyers being paid by artists are misrepresenting them even though they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect them.

Other great supplemental reads are Million Dollar Mistakes and Behind the Glass.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference for any Graphic Designer.......2007-09-21

This book has some great resources for any graphic designer, whether you're needing to figure out the right CMYK mixture for a color, or the average envelope size.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A replacement for the "Pocket Pal".......2007-08-11

A great resource for all the little details you don't find in your design school text books. I've tossed my Pocket Pal and this is next to my copy of Bringhurst now.

3 out of 5 stars for a beginner.........2007-08-04

i'm a big design book junky. i have shelves of them. so once you have all that.. you really don't need this one. it has little tidbits of design how-to's.

2 out of 5 stars The Book Should Be Renamed.......2007-07-20

After reading the mixed reviews from ambiguous raves to detail specific criticisms, I checked out the book myself in a store.

The book isn't awful, but if you have a production department, it's probably better to ask them a question. The book doesn't outline anything that a production artist wouldn't know and that any competent graphic designer should know by heart.

Without any specific mechanicals or keylines, it'll give you an idea or suggestions for package design, but like a typographer doesn't need to get a book that just lists type samples of what they own (you can print samples out yourself with Fontbook or ask a freshman at any university to kidnap one from their Viscom dept.), a package designer should need such basic package design suggestions.

I was hoping for this to be a cheat-sheet kind of book much like the O'Reilly cookbook series might be, but it's the opposite.

An entire chapter devoted to how color prints! Great for a college freshman without access to a prepress class, but entirely asinine for someone who's done press checks. Your better off referencing Pantone's website or ordering yourself one of their color books since it'll be more accurate than a cheaply printed book like this.

It's actually really baffling that any creative person would rather reference an off the rack book that might suffer light or acid deterioration for CMYK swatches rather than Pantone Formula Guide Coated, unCoated, matte.

Yeah, this is a cheap concise reference, but you get what you pay for and this isn't an exception.

The book should be renamed to:
A Cheap Concise Production Reference for Short-cut Takers

Book Description

Fifteen years ago, Robert Fulghum published a simple credo—a credo that became the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Now, seven million copies later, Fulghum returns to the book that was embraced around the world. He has written a new preface and twenty-five essays, which add even more potency to a common, though no less relevant, piece of wisdom: that the most basic aspects of life bear its most important opportunities.

Here Fulghum engages us with musings on life, death, love, pain, joy, sorrow, and the best chicken-fried steak in the continental U.S.A. The little seed in the Styrofoam cup offers a reminder about our own mortality and the delicate nature of life . . . a spider who catches (and loses) a full-grown woman in its web one fine morning teaches us about surviving catastrophe . . . the love story of Jean-Francois Pilatre and his hot air balloon reminds us to be brave and unafraid to “fly” . . . life lessons hidden in the laundry pile . . . magical qualities found in a box of crayons . . . hide-and-seek vs. sardines—and how these games relate to the nature of God. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten is brimming with the very stuff of life and the significance found in the smallest details.

In the years that have passed since the first publication of this book that touched so many with its simple, profound wisdom, Robert Fulghum has had some time to ponder, to reevaluate, and to reconsider. And here are those fresh thoughts on classic topics, right alongside the wonderful new essays.

Perhaps in today’s chaotic, more challenging world, these essays on life will resonate even deeper—as readers discover how universal insights can be found in ordinary events.

4 out of 5 stars simple truths.......2007-08-26

Fulghum is an honest and simple portrayer of the human condition. As a teacher, his insights are really useful. A new book, Tales of the Dolly Llama, gives an account of teaching that is just as funny and touching, but with greater analysis of the school system that so dictates our lives. I heartily recommend both.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2007-08-20

This is a wonderful little easy-to-read book that covers the basic philosophy of day-to-day life from a simple, everyman inner-child standpoint. The author muses freely about making time to play, how to keep one's sense of wonder, how to share with others, cleaning up after oneself, how to take responsibility for all the little things in life, how to earn and give trust, how to be a good friend, etc. It's a very emotionally refreshing book, and I'm long overdue for a re-read ... especially having lost both of my parents in recent years.

One of life's big hurdles is maintaining one's sense of fun & wonder, despite the inevitable ravages of time, and the jaundiced hindsight of experience. Books like this offer a precious opportunity to rejuvenate one's spirit, and sense of fun and adventure.

Such opportunities become more and more precious, as time goes by, so always remember to lean out wide and try to seize them whenever they present themselves ... as you ride the great carousel of life.

Wonderfully funny, honest look at the world. I read this book years ago but still still return to the books simple wisdom, especially as I grow older. If I could only own one Robert Fulghum book THIS would be it.

Book Description

Grandpa told me the story of the biggest mistake in his life every year until the day he died and he always ended the story with the same advice: Never ignore the local marketplace. Grandpa didn’t research the local real estate market. He made his decision about purchasing the skyscraper his business was located in based on what he read in the newspapers and heard on the radio: Across the nation jobs were scarce and families were struggling to make ends meet. He relied on national trends as well as on his experience of what was happening to those closest to him up in the Bronx where he lived – businesses along the Grand Concourse struggling to survive… Grandpa allowed the ills of the nation and the neighborhood where he lived -- which he read and heard about every day -- to blind him to the activity and prospects of the local marketplace in which his business was located. He had an opportunity to purchase a fifty-story building on one of the most sought-after retail streets in the world for a deep discount, and he missed it. He ignored the rich potential of Manhattan because he was so focused on the nation and the Bronx. He ignored the gravity and pull of Manhattan because of the dismal stories he heard about Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia. He learned the hard way that local real estate values are determined by local activity. He had made a mistake that he would not let himself, or me, ever forget.

In this book, I am following Grandpa’s lead. My objective is to offer you some valuable lessons on purchasing real estate. My Grandfather was not the only person to make a mistake in real estate. Mistakes are made by many households and investors every year. The common thread among them— they did not pay attention to local influences and activity.

I believe that if you master the lessons that I have learned over the years on how to evaluate and purchase real estate the local way—you will become a successful real estate investor—and make Grandpa proud.

—From ALL REAL ESTATE IS LOCAL

Whatever the national trends are with regard to real estate – whether they are booming or busting – what really matters is what the market conditions are in your region, town, or neighborhood. For as David Lereah points out, in the end, all real estate is local.

What does that mean? Even during the real estate boom of 2001-2005, a great many cities and regions did not participate in the boom – they lagged behind, or even decreased in value. Similarly, when prices began to fall nationally, there were plenty of regions and locales where prices rose, and sales boomed. As Lereah makes clear, the most important factor in buying or selling a home isn’t what is going on nationally – it is what is going on in your local market. Evaluating present and future trends and influences in your region or neighborhood is essential to creating long term wealth, whether you are in a buyer’s or a seller’s market. And David Lereah, as the Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors, shows you how to determine the conditions in your neighborhood. Lereah reveals how to:

Evaluate the DNA of homes in the town or county or region you are considering (every town has its own real estate DNA – the characteristics that make a region or city more or less desirable to live in).

Determine whether property values in your targeted neighborhood are on the rise.

Research future real estate influences and trends, from migration into or out of the region, to plans to attract or develop new businesses in the area.

Understand the local factors that can affect your investment in the future.

Countless books offer advice on how to buy and sell a home. But ALL REAL ESTATE IS LOCAL is the first book to explain how knowing the ins and outs of the local market you are targeting is essential to deciding when, where, and what to buy.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars My Gosh.......2007-06-09

If you don't know already by this date, Mr. Lereah has resigned his post in the NAR. He is disagraced all over the internet as a liar (do a Google search) and rightfully so. If he believes what he says, at worst he's an ignorant fool. If he does not he's a lying fool...either way the man is a fool.

5 out of 5 stars Needed Perspective and Very Well Written.......2007-04-30

Why do I rate this book highly? This book encourages people to do more research and make more informed decisions. People receive enormous amounts of data about real estate and it is often macro in nature. David Lereah ultimately suggests that "Location Location Location", while an over-used term, is THE factor of importance. He is correct. Most real estate professionals have been working hard to encourgae people to apply local factors to their analysis of real estate. It is true that, often, people talk about real estate in generic terms and can expect generic positive results. David Lereah's message is sound and a refreshing voice.

1 out of 5 stars Another swing, another miss........2007-04-11

Mr. Lereah likes to publish books. Tragically, they have almost comedic timing. He wrote a book on how to get rich in tech stocks that came out in 2000, when the tech stock market collapsed. His previous book was about how the housing market would continue to grow at double digit rates through the end of the decade. He then re-released it when it was obvious that there was a bubble with a new title on why the real estate bubble won't bust. That brings us to his latest book All Real Estate is Local. Now he tries to backpedal off of his hyping of the bubble areas and start bombastically declaring that even though the national trend of inflating housing prices across the country has stalled and is reversing, you can still find good deals if you start focusing on tinier and tinier sections of housing, down to individual neighborhoods. The cheap, easy money that fueled the boom is on the way out, and it will be harder and harder to qualify for loans and interest rates are likely to keep rising. The net result is stagnant or deflationary housing prices.

He's been wrong in his previous two books, and now he's swinging for the fences at a ball that's in the dirt for his third. Instead of saying "Buy everything!" like his last books, now he's saying "Move your buying to an area that isn't already wildly overpriced!" So write those checks for investment homes in Topeka, Kansas everybody!

If you want a book to educate you about real estate investing, this isn't it. If you want a book that tries to convince you to stuff money into some realtor's pocket, then this is the book for you. If you just want to buy yourself a home, forget all the real estate books and calculate your renting costs vs. your owning costs, and then make an informed decision as to when you want to purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Insight.......2007-04-10

A very useful read. Mr. Lereah provides excellent insights about real estate investing, whether it's labeled "buyer" or "seller" market. In very readable style, he outlines the factors we all should look into, when buying our own home or considering other real estate investment. Former US House Speaker Tip O'Neill was right on the money about politics being local...and David Lereah is on the money (for all of us) about the LOCAL factors affecting real estate.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Easy to Understand.......2007-10-07

I am currently in the process of creating my own LLC at the time writing this review. The book is very helpful to understand the process and the things I will have to worry about from a legal and also tax perspective. I hired a lawyer for the company creation before I bought the book and have now the feeling that I could be doing it without paying a lawyer. However, the book made me realize that there is a lot of paperwork involved in the process and the lawyer will do all that work for me, which saves me a lot of time.

I am currently very busy preparing everything for the daily business operation to come so I do not regret my decision of using a lawyer. If time is not too much of a problem, but saving the cost for a good corporate lawyer is, this book will be able to help you to get the process done by yourself.

For people like me, who use a lawyer is the book still helpful, because there are a lot of things to consider and know about, after your LLC was created. It will serve me well in the years to come. I am sure about that.

5 out of 5 stars Quick easy read, Great Information!.......2007-08-05

I read this whole book on a flight from Miami to Seattle. I had just started an LLC through a Lawyer and wanted to get an idea of how to put together the Operating Agreement. This book had a great Operating Agreement example in the back. It also had simple examples for each scenario that helped me understand the best type of LLC set-up for my business. Nolo's Quick LLC covered everything I needed to know in an easy format to read and reference. After reading, I felt I was able to discuss my ideas intelligently with my lawyer and ask him questions I would have never thought of before.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent manual essential not only to business owners.......2007-07-07

Most in business have learned the term 'limited liability company' - but few know what this means, let alone how to tailor a business as a LLC and to understand if and when such a structure would apply. NOLO'S QUICK LLC, 4TH EDITION provides all the basics to operating an LLC, from choosing different structures and understanding differences between a LLC and a corporation to handling legal and tax paperwork. The result is an excellent manual essential not only to business owners, but to business libraries seeking an easy yet comprehensive reference.

    4 out of 5 stars Informative, Provides a Framework, A Bit Conservative.......2007-02-12

Having just established my own Limited Liability Company (LLC), I wanted a book that would define what a LLC is in the framework of other business models, including tax and legal implications. I wanted to ensure that a LLC was the best fit for me. That is exactly what this book did, and it did it well.

If you are thinking of starting your own business an a LLC, but are not sure of which business model to use (Sole Propertiorship, LLC, Parternship, S-Corp, C-Corp), this book will help inform you of the pros and cons of LLCs, and how they fit into the overall legal and tax structure.

The only reason I rated this book at 4 stars instead of 5 stars, is that it scared me a bit in regards to the legal and tax requirements, without providing enough detail to give me a grasp on why the requirements were in effect. Having also been in contact with a certified tax expert and accountant while I was reading this book, I learned that this book errs on the side of being very conservative, or even a bit scary, in regards to legal and tax requirements. So I would advise anyone who gets this book to also balance it out by reading a more aggressive book about saving money on taxes and operating an LLC legally.

After reading this book, I also read "Your Limited Liability Company, An Operating Manual" by the same author. That book provides in depth detail on the day-to-day running of an LLC. It helped me tremendously. However, this book is also conservative when it comes to saving money on taxes.

Overall, both books are great reads.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book, Helped Me Decide That An LLC Is Right For ME!.......2006-12-04

This book was not a disappointment by any means. I wanted to learn if forming an LLC was right for me and by the end of reading the book, I knew it was. Nolo's book was surprisingly easy to read and understand. Although the writer is a lawyer, he writes in every day speak and makes the concepts as easy to understand as possible. The book is also more entertaining then one might think. The only thing I would have liked to see as part of this book is a step by step list of who to contact to form the LLC including any forms or at least a link to forms you would need to complete the task. Overall, if you want to learn about LLC's and decide if the business form is right for you, then this is the right book to choose.

5 out of 5 stars David Icke is telling the truth........2007-09-11

the reason it sounds so fantastic is that the average person does not have the information. They live in a fog of network television and canned news media - all of which are owned & controlled by the ones behind the so-called 'conspiracy'.

Do the research. It's no story - it's real.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read.......2007-09-11

The conclusions in this book about the nature of reality and how it's all an illusion have changed my life for the best. Icke is very thorough and well documented in trying to support his claims. I couldn't put the book down. Five stars.

    2 out of 5 stars Balony.......2006-11-25

Hehe, O.K. I bought the book -- it's not the first time I've thrown away money and won't be the last. After skimming through it and reading this guy's life story, which includes "voices" psychics, and god-knows what else, I can say that I refuse to waste my valuable time reading this clap-trap. Let me suggest that everyone thinking about buying this book, read THIS book first you will be doing yourself a lifelong favor.

4 out of 5 stars IS DAVID ICKE STARTING TO MAKE SENSE?.......2006-09-18

It's easy to simply reject someone who says the world is run by manipulative reptilians posing as world leaders; that George Bush, Tony Blair, the British monarch, and many other prominent people are blood-drinking child-abusers who engage in secret rituals unknown to the rest of us. Despite David Icke's seemingly outrageous claims, I found some logic as well as interesting and possibly credible theories in Tales From the Time Loop. In contast to his earlier books, he has shifted his beliefs in a more positive direction. It sounds a lot like he is embracing spirituality and the immortality of the soul. He accepts the existence of the astral world, a place or state with many levels occupied by beings with numerous agendas and understandings of the universe. But he rejects reincarnation as separate lifetimes ("there is no time") or that life in a human body is a journey toward perfection. In Icke's version of reality, there is no karma, no need to make up for evil deeds or mistakes. Everything is an illusion. What is missing in his framework, in my opinion, is purpose. Why does reality exist? Why are we here playing these games?

What about the evil reptilians? Why are they here and what do they want? Icke finally gives us a reason the reptilians must sacrifice humans and drink blood. He says they have a problem remaining in this dimension and they need human DNA to keep from shifting back to their own dimension. They sometimes do shapeshift into reptiles, and he quotes numerous witnesses who have seen them shift. Icke takes pokes at the frenzy of interest in the bloodline of Jesus (theories that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had children). He says the so-called Jesus bloodline is just part of the reptilian bloodline. In a previous book, he claimed there was no historical Jesus, so I don't know what to make of this new belittling of the Jesus bloodline.

But the repitilians seem to fade in importance behind his major thesis, that we are all participating in a Time Loop in which history keeps repeating itself. Everything in the Time Loop (our apparent universe as well as the astral world) vibrates. Only Oneness does not vibrate. David found a parallel to this idea in the movie, The Matrix, which obviously impressed him much more than it impressed me. I found the Matrix movies silly stories thinly built around special effects. Despite his admiration for matrix-buster Neo, Icke criticizes the media for being purveyors of falsehood that serve the Illuminati agenda.

Speaking of history, I do not think David Icke is anti-semitic as some of his critics charge. He is absolutely correct in defending anyone's right to express their point of view, even if it is repugnant and can be proven wrong. David is not a holocaust-denyer, but he does think people have a right to deny the holocaust. If we had an intelligent, educated populace, there would be few takers for theories like "there was no holocaust" that are so contrary to tons of evidence. He also explores an interesting idea about the origin of today's Jewish population. There is some evidence that the Ashkenazi Jews (those who come from Europe) were at least in part related to a non-semitic people called the Khazars who converted to Judaism in 740 AD. They occupied territory that is mostly in modern-day Turkey. The significance of this (according to Icke) is that it refutes the idea that present-day Israel was an ancestral home to its current Jewish inhabitants.

But as the book progresses, Icke sounds more like many New Agers in proclaiming that human consciousness will shift into higher gear and can defeat the Illuminati. He gained some new insights, he says, while taking a psychoactive drug, ayahuasca, in Brazil. This was his first foray into mind-altering drugs and he tells us he received a great deal of information from a voice in his head. I believe him (this is not an uncommon experience) but I recognize that we do not know the origin of these voices. They may originate within ourselves, or they may come from spiritual entities outside ourselves. In either case, we cannot be sure what they tell us contains any actual truth.

Why bother reading Tales From the Time Loop or any of David Icke's books? I don't know if there are any actual Illuminati plotting to take over the world, but I do know the world is full of evil, with its endless wars, unrelenting poverty and destructive competition for precious natural resources. Icke's critics can be pretty hard on him, but I think his message deserves a hearing. I want to live in a world where David Icke can say and write what he believes and where I am free to say and write what I think of what he believes.

5 out of 5 stars No room left for cowards..........2006-09-07

This is a great and challenging book, not for the faint of heart. David Icke presents a vision of the world which is radically different from the one which we are spoonfed from cradle to grave. Think of the courage it takes to get up on the world stage and bring forth this kind of information. People who pan Icke (and others in the truth movement) are nothing more than staid cowards, unwilling to integrate and adapt...worst of all, unwilling to listen and think these things through. Bottom line: read this book and pass it on to friends; time is running short and our freedoms are eroding before our eyes. It's time to wake up and rise to our true and magnificent human potential...and Icke is here to help on us our way.

Part memoir and part education (or lack thereof), The Know-It-All chronicles NPR contributor A.J. Jacobs's hilarious, enlightening, and seemingly impossible quest to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A to Z.

To fill the ever-widening gaps in his Ivy League education, A.J. Jacobs sets for himself the daunting task of reading all thirty-two volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His wife, Julie, tells him it's a waste of time, his friends believe he is losing his mind, and his father, a brilliant attorney who had once attempted the same feat and quit somewhere around Borneo, is encouraging but unconvinced.

With self-deprecating wit and a disarming frankness, The Know-It-All recounts the unexpected and comically disruptive effects Operation Encyclopedia has on every part of Jacobs's life -- from his newly minted marriage to his complicated relationship with his father and the rest of his charmingly eccentric New York family to his day job as an editor at Esquire. Non-fiction, a memoir of the year the author read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, and the effects on his family and life. Pretty entertaining (after a slow start); in fact, much more entertaining than the unpromising premise would suggest. The author has a wry, self-deprecating, and ultimately winning sense of humor. And the excerpts from the encyclopedia were effective and amusing; they read much like someone who knows my tastes weeding out the dross and passing along only the bits of most interest to me. Worthwhile and recommended.

I'm enjoying this book so far, and I'm only to "E." It's a fun read, and I've already learned some trivia that I've felt compelled to share with others. More than anything, it's a story of a man coming to the realization, as most honors students do, that he's not the smartest man in the world and what that means in terms of his purpose in life. It certainly gets you thinking. I grew up in a nerdy family with grocery store Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias for bathroom reading, so I can totally relate to this guy.

    AJ,

Since I KNOW(lol) you (and your FIL)are going to check the reviews for your new book too.
I wanted to say thank you for a really great book that is informative, fun to read and life moving. I have an advanced copy and have been reading it for the last day and a half.

This book should be in the Competitive religion section not the Humor section. In Fact I am going to put it in both places in my store.

I love your story. You say did the Bible make you a better person? At least to me you seem to have changed a lot from Month one to some time in September.

I will be Hand selling this book as soon as it hits my store in finished form. This is one of the best books of the 13 I have read this year.

I read The Know-It-All while studying to prepare for being a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire; I needed something to escape from all of the facts I was inhaling, but I didn't want to feel guilty for not using my time wisely. AJ Jacobs book was a perfect fit -- chock full of interesting information, yet funny and poignant, too. Besides taking the reader with him as he navigates his way through the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, there are side trips to other parts of Jacobs' life, both past and present: he and his wife's efforts to have a child; his sweet and slightly competitive relationship with his father; his pursuit of so-called 'smart' activities via Mensa, a crossword players' tournament, and his own appearance on Millionaire; scenes from his childhood in which he was convinced he was the Smartest Boy in the World.

This book is both touching and a riot, and one of the best books I've read in a long time. I couldn't put it down and I was sorry when it ended. In short, The Know-It-All is terrific!

    Book Description

Few beginning graduate students in mathematics and other quantitative subjects possess the daunting breadth of mathematical knowledge expected of them when they begin their studies. This book will offer students a broad outline of essential mathematics and will help to fill in the gaps in their knowledge. The author explains the basic points and a few key results of all the most important undergraduate topics in mathematics, emphasizing the intuitions behind the subject. The topics include linear algebra, vector calculus, differential and analytical geometry, real analysis, point-set topology, probability, complex analysis, set theory, algorithms, and more. An annotated bibliography offers a guide to further reading and to more rigorous foundations.

4 out of 5 stars Logic is conspicuously absent, otherwise a reasonable survey.......2007-01-14

While there is some truth to both segments of the title, in my experience there is also a great deal that can be disputed. Many of the topics that Garrity discusses in the book are standard fare in an undergraduate mathematics major. Chapter one is a recapitulation and summary of a basic course in linear algebra, certainly not something that any math major would have missed. The topic of chapter two is epsilon and delta real analysis, the mainstay of first year calculus. Chapter three covers calculus of vector-values functions, a primary topic of third semester calculus. Finally, the basics of abstract algebra, groups, rings and fields, are covered in chapter eleven. Therefore, four of the sixteen chapters describe topics that no math major could have missed.
Some of the other chapters cover topics that may or may not be requirements for completion of a major:

*) Chapter 4 point set topology
    *) Chapter 8 geometry
    *) Chapter 14 differential equations
*) Chapter 15 combinatorics and probability

However, it is most unlikely that anyone could receive a math major without taking at least two of these courses.
My disputes with the second part of the title are twofold. The first is that the topic may not be needed in graduate school. Chapter thirteen covers Fourier analysis and chapter sixteen algorithms. I am not convinced that graduate students really need to know either of these topics. My second point of dispute is that some of these topics are the basic topics that you study in graduate school. Stokes' Theorem, differential forms, curvature for curves and surfaces, complex analysis, countability and the axiom of choice and Lebesgue integration are all described at a level that I consider to be above the undergraduate.
Putting these criticisms aside, this book is a good survey of most of the topics that you would be expected to master in graduate school. The one conspicuous absence is any mention of logic. The word proposition or even the word logic does not appear in the index, and this is a topic that is needed in graduate school. To me, this is a glaring and unfortunate oversight.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect if you're entering a math-related graduate program.......2006-12-31

This is a great book to read, and read-again if you are entering a graduate program in mathematics, computational science, physics, or any mathematics-related graduate program. Includes many topics often found on qualifying exams.

    4 out of 5 stars I Wish I Had Done It.......2006-01-17

When I was in graduate school, it seemed that my professors were constantly making reference to a theorem or definition that I had never heard of, or that I had forgotten. The professors would usually acknowledge the possibility that their students were unfamiliar with the cited material, but they would say something like, "Oh, you can pick that up anywhere." Determining the "anywhere" was often a frustrating and time-consuming experience. I often thought that "someone" should write a book condensing all that material that I could "pick up anywhere" into one book. And I just discovered that someone has indeed done exactly that.

One can quibble about the choice of topics in this book. Three of the sixteen chapters in the book are devoted to vector calculus leading up to Stokes' Theorem. Five others concentrate on various forms of analysis and differential equations. Personally I think that perhaps some basic results in Number Theory might have been helpful; others may object to the omission of Algebraic Topology, although I don't think there is much material in early graduate school that depends on a knowledge of results or definitions in Algebraic Topology.

I agree with the previous reviewer who suggests that the book would be improved by the inclusion of answers to the exercises, but that omission doesn't upset me as much as it did her/him.

My biggest criticism of the book is that there is a disappointingly large number of typos. Even though this is a first edition, it should have been more carefully proofread. If a second edition is ever issued, I hope that problem will be corrected.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful as a guide .......2005-01-20

I found this book to be very helpful as a guide to self-study in mathematics. I did not rely on the chapters for understanding, but rather used them as a topic list for a several year course of study. I used the bibliography to find the best books for study and then later used the chapters as an essential review. When I finished, I felt I had a completely satisfactory undergraduate education in mathematics at a fraction of the usual cost. I now have an excellent library as well.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a recap, bad for anything more.......2004-01-28

This book has a very particular purpose: to recap some basic concepts from undergraduate mathematics so that you get the "big picture". In other words, for every math course you took as an undergrad, this book provides a good outline of the major ideas and how they fit together. But, it is only an outline; nothing more. If you actually missed out on some topic, or your knowledge of a subject is shaky, then this book won't help much. It will only help by providing a bibliography of some other references for that subject.

This book is meant to organize your undergraduate math knowledge, not to supplement it.

With that said, I'll mention a few words about the content of the book. It is quite well written and definitely extracts the essential ideas for your quick consumption. There are a few topics that I personally feel are missing, such as Gram-Schmidt and Jordan Canonical Forms for Linear Algebra, and UFDs and PIDs from Algebra. In general, it seemed like the book leaned a little more towards analysis than algebra, but the vast majority of important topics were indeed encapsulated in their synopsis.

Good for a very specific audience, but otherwise not wonderfully useful.

    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-03-12

I enjoyed this book very much. It was simple to understand and quite interesting. I'm sure it's not the end all in color mixing books, but it is not a bad one at all.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to start with.......2004-02-16

I've just started oil painting, and this book proved invaluable in helping me sort out the many, many different kinds of paint with their exotic names out there. I generally like to jump in and just experiment, but when I discovered the high price of good oil paints, I decided I needed a little book knowledge first. This book costs about the same as a good tube of paint, and saved me from buying many colors that, before reading the book, I didn't realize I wouldn't really need (at least to start with). It's one of clearest, most concise books I've read (on any subject). Every word is one of wisdom. If you're new to mixing paint, or having trouble figuring it out, get this book (it doesn't really cover HOW to paint though).

3 out of 5 stars A True Labor Saving Book.......2003-06-02

The first thing I always did with a new set of paints was create color swatches and mixes. Now that my paint sets are more expensive I hate to waste paint on swatches that I'll probably put in some "safe" location in the studio...never to be seen again. Here I can reference swatches of commonly used colors, opaque and transparent in a range of media. Sidaway also includes the best history of pigments that I've read to date - answering a question about phthalo blue that's been bugging me for years (when was it introduced? 1936.) This book is no substitute for learning about your palette, but does provide information on how to select an appropriate palette.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2003-01-03

It covered the basics of color and technical terms "hue, shade, tint" It has a section about the history of pigments and dies and what they used to be made of that is interesting. One brown paint used to be made of ground up mummies. It discusses the mixing of color in many different media.
