Book Description
By far the most comprehensive book on the subject, the completely new Second Edition of Airport Operations updates the many developments in this fast-changing industry. The book provides a broad perspective on the effects of deregulation, privatization, and commercialization. Thoroughly illustrated, it examines the most current practices in airport security and terminal access, cargo relations, noise control, scheduling issues, and more. It is equally valuable to aviation educators and students as well as to airport personnel.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Aviation Management Students.......2004-10-20
Im planning to go into Aviation Management and this is a great book that goes over everything that happens at an airport and how to run an airport!! Great book!!
Very comphrensive to all areas of airport operations.......2000-01-10
This book is an excellent text to all airport related personnels. I found it's particularly useful to people working in airport and/or aviation management who want to gain more in-depth understanding to all areas of airport operations. This book can also serve as in-house classroom training text for airline personnel. A highly recommended one!
A valuable book for any transport researcher.......1999-01-30
This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.
A very complete, accurate, and timely explanation of Airport.......1998-11-18
This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato
I've based my studies on that. Amazing amount of Knowledge........1998-05-07
Don't be afraid of the great amount of number data. It's all understandable

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Textbook.......2007-03-25
This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the technical and economic aspects of various facets of air transportation including commercial airlines, charter operations, corporate services and other related businesses such as leasing company operations and fractional ownership. The reader gains insights into the areas where costs can be saved and revenues enhanced. For example, the author presents various strategies to minimize fuel usage and hence improve the bottom line.
The book is well written allowing it to be accessible to people working in various specialties in the air transportation business that have opportunities to learn about economic air transport operations. Among the subjects covered include aircraft maintenance economics, various aircraft financing options enabling managers to evaluate those most beneficial for their business and revenue enhancement strategies. The reader will be pleased to learn that environmental issues are not forgotten.
Overall, a useful and helpful book for managers in the air transportation industry who need to learn how to minimize costs, improve revenue and thus enhance profits.
Too much, too little, need more -- focus.......2003-12-13
The title is misleading. I searched through every chapter to decipher how to make a profit with passenger, cargo, and/or other areas of air transportation. It covers a tremendous amount of information like aircraft configurations and technical designs. Unfortunately, and all so common, lots of problems given about aviation; but few solutions offered about profit strategies!
Each chapter technically covers an area of air transportation, but even the short chapters are not extensive enough. Only the most fundamental elements are written. There is not enough pertinent information delivered for the reader to absorb a firm understanding about air transportation.
The problem is that this 500 page book covers an awful lot of technical material. He selectively crammed it all into 500 pages. Some important elements are missing. The title of the book should be more concise about which audience the author wanted to attract, and spread all his great information into two brilliantly-written volumes.

Book Description
Handbook of Checked Baggage Screening – Advanced Airport Security Operation is a practical guide for project managers and designers embarking on hold-baggage screening developments within the airport environment for the first time. The book clearly explains away any uncertainty about the processes and procedures to be used by the various parties involved within the industry and sets out ‘best practice’ with respect to checked baggage screening design. Valuable lessons can be learned from actual case studies contributed by leading equipment manufacturers on recent 1000ld baggage screening projects.
In addition to the all-important security screening of baggage and passengers the book also looks at the following areas associated with airport security, through the use of a detailed structured security check-list evaluation questionnaire. The questionnaire allows airports to assess the state of readiness of their airports and then, using the other chapters, gain an insight regarding which technology will best solve any security gaps.
The authors offer a unique perspective through their background and experience. Many of the checked baggage screening procedures and equipment discussed in the book have already been implemented in the UK, with the authors responsible for leading this effort. The combined experience they can offer to the industry world wide is invaluable.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction and Reference for Aviation.......2000-03-22
A couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to learn to fly. Flying was something I have dreamed of doing since I was a little kid and I decided that now was the time. Before approaching a flight instructor I wanted to know a little bit more about flying. I looked at a number of books geared towards student pilots but was disappointed. Most books for students were either too simple (not enough info) or too much like a study guide (which I already had). What I wanted was something that introduced me to all aspects of aviation, not just the stick and rudder stuff. The Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge is just such a book. Flying is not just about aerodynamics. There is a significant amount of information that must be absorbed before ever getting into the left seat. Airspace regulations, airport procedures, communications, navigation, and flight planning, to name just a few, are all part of flying. Paul Illman not only covers each of these in depth but he does so in a way to show you how each are related to the other. Since meteorology is also integral to flying, any good pilot would also have to be a good weatherman. Illman covers this subject very well. I haven't looked at weather the same way since. (I have always been fascinated with explanations on the workings of nature.) This book provides a strong foundation of knowledge in all of these subjects and a number of others. Many of us dream of flying. But safe flying requires more than dreaming. Flying is a discipline. By covering all areas of aviation, and showing us how important knowledge in each of these areas is critical to safe flying, Illman gives us a much more accurate picture of what it takes to become a pilot. By emphasizing the responsibilities of the pilot we can better determine if we really want to become a Pilot In Charge. If you read and understand this book you will know whether or not flying is for you.
No one book can completely prepare you for flying. But this book covers enough to get you started with a firm foundation. I read this book from cover to cover before I began my using my study guides for the FAA exam. (I am currently using Gleim's Private Pilot study course, which I also recommend.) The Pilot's Handbook gave me a much better understanding of aviation and has greatly enhanced my learning. That Private Pilot certificate doesn't seem so far away.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Overview of Airport Management!.......2007-05-31
As an aviation professor, I wanted a book that offered a comprehensive but relatively basic overview to the many aspects of airport management. Airport Planning & Management is an easy read and its format makes it easy to refer back to areas of the book for review. It has a good balance of charts, diagrams, and graphics. It is a great book for students that want a well-rounded understanding of airports and their operations. It is also a great book for anyone who just want to know how airports work!
First-class book of airport industry.......2005-10-12
A very good book, most 'freindly' and understandabale, offers wide spectrum of airport's infrastructure as well as its economic aspects. Recommanded forb thse intersted in aaition in general and airport planning in particular.

The Book Of Choice For Students and Dreamers.......2005-08-23
Like many young men, and I daresay women, I was drawn to airport management after exposure to Burt Lamcaster's sterling portrayal of a harried airport manager in the Ross Hunter classic AIRPORT. Lancaster showed us that a man could handle a million problems all at once, if he had the right combination of grit and gray cells. It wasn't only the glamor, it was the idea of helping people get through their day--even when the people in question were six or seven miles up in the air--that made me consider airport management as a major at school.
Other factors prevented me from achieving my goal, but I continue to pick up textbooks and manuals to keep abreast of the way airports have changed over the last 35 years. From a technical point of view, one of the best resources for the lay manager is the Alexander Wells book AIRPORT PLANNING & MANAGEMENT (AP & MANAGEMENT) co-authored with Seth Young, both of them prominent in the field--and the airfield--today. This book brings you thoroughly up to date on the way the skies (and the terminals) have changed since the day of infamy, 9/11. Their information is laid out with dispatch, not a wasted word between them. In addition, they know their stuff, that's for sure. Over five hundred pages and I could detect only a few minor inaccuracies.
If you were assigned to develop your own airport in some understaffed part of the world, this would be the volume you would bring with you. If you were limited to bringing one textbook with you. Of course, the old joke among airport planning students is, what CD would you bring? Why, Briano Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS of course.
Excellent reference for any student of airport management.......2004-04-22
Airport Planning & Management is an excellent reference for any student of airport management or aviation.
The book details just about every facet of how an airport is run. From airport site selection to runway design and everything in between, Airport Planning & Management just about covers it all.
The chapters are all well written and extremely well organized. Any aviation enthusiast who is interested in how airports are run will find this a valuable reference.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction To Aircraft Rescue And Fire Fighting.......2007-09-24
This text, prepared by the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), is a good introduction to aircraft (and airport) rescue and fire fighting. The book is easy to comprehend, yet is fairly detailed. There is a lot of good information on aircraft-specific fire fighting skills, as well as other relevant sections on issues like airport familiarization (lighting, markings, grid maps, etc.) and aircraft familiarization (engines, electrical systems, composite hazards, etc.)
The book is very strong in dealing with situational awareness issues (e.g. topography and terrain hazards, wind direction, hazardous goods), and is especially good at dealing with different types of apparatus and extinguishing agents (Aqueous Film Forming Foam, Regular Protein Foam, Film Forming Fluroprotein Foam, Purple K, etc.) and their application devices and method (aspirating versus nonaspirating nozzles, portable form proportioners, etc.) Basic skills and assessment techniques are strongly reinforced, and the place of fire fighters in Airport Emergency Plans is thoroughly explained.
The book tends to be a bit repetitive and occasionally tedious, but for someone with interest in aircraft rescue and fire fighting, this is an indispensable text.
