Book Description

In America today college professors cringe at the lack of writing skills displayed by their students, business leaders bemoan poor communicative skills among their employees, and people themselves recognize that they (and their children) have a problem and want to do something about it.
This inviting book introduces readers anew to the eight parts of speech and common grammatical problems -- such as the case of pronouns depicted in the book's title, the tension between nouns and verbs, the controversy of the active vs. passive voice, and the power of a verb-based style. Then equipped with a knowledge of the parts of speech and the power of the verb form, Good presents his theory of style and the craft of sentences -- including those important marks of punctuation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-10

The title alone will sell you. I must hear people misusing "I and me" 100 times a week. I wish I'd had this book in high school. It lays out usage in a clear and understandable manner and doesn't bog you down with information that you don't care about.
Terrific reference book for non-English majors.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Buy This Book!!!.......2007-07-08

The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you are interested in grammar. That means you should buy this book, as it is certainly one of the better books on this topic. What I especially like is that it does not treat you as a grammarian and it reviews many basics of sentence structure - and it is an enjoyable read. Yes, you still should have a copy of "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White if you're serious about good writing, but this book is a clear, single source, winner to me. I write articles, books and websites. I routinely seek good reference advice. That includes this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Grammar.......2007-05-13

Mr. Good laments the fact that grammar is no longer taught in schools and he has taken the effort to introduce novices to it in a fun way. I am truly enjoying his book and I am learning much along the way! Thank you, Mr. Good!

5 out of 5 stars Finally - a grammar book written for the rest of us!.......2007-04-11

I am always trying to ensure my grammar is correct (a habit I picked up from my father.) I've not been able to find a book that explains common grammar problems in a way I would remember. This one is easy to use and I will always keep it with my dictionary and other reference books.

This is an excellent book for learning or renewing our knowledge of English Grammar. There is a conspiracy in this country to dumb down the attendees of public schools, and it began in the early part of the last century with some wealthy industrialists and government officials. Leaving Children behind began before Bush and he is a prime example of it. Let's all fight back by speaking English properly, as well as reading and writing excellently. This book is a good place to start! Then, on to Phonics!

4 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for the production and recognition of consonant and vowel sounds of American English.......2006-02-11

When I first flipped through the pages of American English Pronunciation: It's no Good Unless You're Understood it struck me as another dull pronunciation manual with the same old minimal pairs, and pointless drill work. However, as I gave it a better look, I soon realized its strengths, namely the comprehensive listing of American idioms for each new vowel or consonant sound in catching, well-written sentences, and the in-depth analysis of English phonemes. Donna Hope, in her large experience as a speech therapist attending to speakers from various nationalities, is very sensitive to the slightest phonetic differences in the speech of native and non-native speakers of English, such as insufficient aspiration in plosives, devoicing in final voiced consonants, distortions in diphthongs, insufficient lip rounding in back vowels , early release of consonants in clusters, etc. The book also has an entire unit for the pronunciation of major US states, cities and sites - very useful for the non-native English teacher - as well as interesting cultural notes.I just wish the same care given to segments (vowels and consonants) had been given to suprasegments: while there is some work on liaisons (blendings) and reductions - indispensible for rhythm- - the book fails to address other aspects of prosody such as intonation and word stress.

5 out of 5 stars Pronunciation to the fullest.......2000-04-29

This book is no ordinary pronunciation book. It's "the" Book. It goes beyond teaching vowel and consonant sounds. It's about the way americans speak. For the first time I've been working with sound transitions and blendings. It feels great to notice the changes in my pronunciation. At the same time, I improve my vocabulary and learn great idiomatic expressions, up-to-date ones. As the author points out the main problems each native speaker might have, it is easier for us, students, to identify our weak points and this way, dedicate more time and effort to improve them.

5 out of 5 stars A good help for ESL teachers around the world.......2000-03-13

It's an excellent book for ESL teachers, students and speakers who want to improve their speech abilities, working with reduction of English accent. The section with useful expressions is really helpful. You practice the consonants and vowels and learn idiomatic expressions at the same time. Also, the author has an idea of the weak points that students from different languages may present. Knowing the sounds that are most difficult for Portuguese speakers helps a lot in my teaching and in my self-improvement.

Page 44 is blank. The sentence that starts on page 43 does not continue on page 45, it is just gone, along with all the other information that is supposed to be on that page.

Also, on page 32 they define adverbs incorrectly. But on page 41, in a more detailed explanation of adverbs, they define the word correctly.

4 out of 5 stars let's reconsider.......2006-05-25

I read through the other reviews and I understand where they're coming from. Yes, the book is written like an alcoholic's 12 step program BUT Harris is kind of right. At first, I was almost confused as to whether it was a joke or not, but as I read further, I realized that the bad habits that writers have are actually base upon insecurities. Harris tells the reader to suck it up - quit caring so much about what other people might think of your writing - and write good srong sentences. Once you actually get to the 12 steps, I think there is some really useful information in there. I was not overpowered by techinical issues. Harris clearly and simply states what to look out for in your own writing. He actually lists them - which makes this a good reference manual to put on my desk. So the book is based on a joke (if that's what you want to call it). I found it funny. Even funnier, I saw myself in what he was saying.

1 out of 5 stars Not only is the gag bad, but the underlying advice is riddled with errors!.......2006-02-02

Yes, the title is a lame joke and the repeated 12-step references are an insultingly stupid gag that isn't even clever the FIRST time he tries it.

Moreover, the information is often wrong. Example: when pointing out the problem of prefixes such as bi- and semi-, he gets the definition of semiannual backwards and actually teaches the reader that it means "every other year", which is wrong! And he overlooks the important fact that biennial and biannual are two different things.

There are punctuation errors in the book along with errors about punctuation.

I just had to stop reading before the book was finished. I was starting to skip a lot, especially all the attempts at humor, and I feared accidentally absorbing some of his errors.

Finally, take a look at this. The one reviewer here who "LOVED this book!!!!" and who claims to "teach a Business Writing course" says she or he "ended up using (and duely[sic] referencing) several pieces from his 12-step program." I didn't finish the book. Is "duely" a new word the author suggested instead of good old-fashioned duly?

2 out of 5 stars An average book buried by a single gag.......2005-11-28

Is it possible for a book on writing to be based on a joke? A single joke? If you're considering "When Good People Write Bad Sentences," then prepare yourself for a book that contains a running gag so hopelessly overdone you'll tire of it by about the tenth page.

Yes, folks, here's a writing book based on the jocular idea that bad writers are suffering from a form of victimization/addiction called "malescribism" that renders their grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure worthy of a twelve-step program. The sad fact is that a decent book on fixing those problems is buried under that cutesy idea.

That decent part consists of the general sentence-writing help you'll find in a hundred other books covering how to write better. So, in truth, the gag is all that distinguishes this book from others. In a trade size with less than 200 pages, the book also suffers from large amounts of white space. This could actually be only 150 pages in length if less generously spaced.

If you want to compose better prose or just write a comprehensible e-mail message, you could probably do worse--unless twelve-step jokes give you hives.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informational.......2005-10-28

I LOVED this book!!!! I teach a Business Writing course and am always looking fresh approaches to the topic. I loved Robert Harris's book and ended up using (and duely referencing) several pieces from his 12-step program. I highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good Book Ruined By Joke.......2005-10-04

Mr. Harris has written a book that has perfectly good advice on sentence structure. To the best of my knowledge, his recommendations are correct, conventional, and well-written, however, the book fails because of a joke.

Yes, he has taken an ordinary joke, a clever analogy, good for perhaps one paragraph, and extended it into 200 pages. He compares a person who mutilates sentence structure to an alcoholic. To correct this situation, the offender must enter a 12-step corrective program like an alcoholic does at AA. Each step focuses on a flawed character trait (anger, envy, worry, psychosexual tension...) that causes one to dangle participles, split infinitives, use grandiose words and trite phrases, or butcher punctuation. Fanning the fire, he then invents testimonials from wretched souls in partial literary recovery.

I like a joke as well as the next guy - I even listen to old George Carlin CD's in my car - but PUHLEEZE, this is an instructional book on writing. I assume I'm the usual reader, who doesn't pick up a book like this to be entertained. I seriously want to write better and I'm in the work mode. I don't plan on wading through 100 pages of inane banter to find the other 100 pages of technical advice. How am I going to attain the glory and admiration that accompanies a killer review in the spotlight by reading jokes?

Now let me back up and give Mr. Harris a couple of compliments:
First, he highlights his excellent plums of advice and reduces each one to a simple command: "Never omit the final comma in a series; Keep the subject and verb of a sentence reasonably close together; Help readers by grouping related items; Make sure the pronouns agree with their antecedents..."
Second - and this is a mixed compliment - he never breaks character. Even those highlighted recommendations are introduced as "Healing Tips."

Perhaps Mr. Harris was inspired by "Eats, Shoots, & Leaves," a best selling book on punctuation. That was a good book, but didn't pretend to be merely about punctuation. It was entertainment in the Erma Bombeck style, and didn't rely on variations of one joke, repeated incessantly.

Maybe I'm being too hard on Mr. Harris, because he did start with a good joke. But what started out as a joke became an irritant. That irritant with its relentless jabs became a sore. The sore became infected with flesh-eating bacteria and soon my life was endangered.

The above was my humble attempt at a joke and I hope you enjoyed it. Now, however, I will leave it in its designated cubbyhole and go on with life.

In conclusion, I think Mr. Harris's book would fare better if he dumped the joke and pared his book down to 100 pages. The finest is often the simplest. But what do I know?

5 out of 5 stars The [BEST] Handbook of Good English.......2005-10-14

As a professional advertising copywriter and English major, I have all the authoritative books on grammar, punctuation and usage, but "The Handbook of Good English" is my go-to source. (My major professor turned me on to it years ago; I just ordered a new copy to replace my original, which was borrowed and not returned.) Highly practical, eminently readable, easy to use and understand, and far more comprehensive than Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style," this is the one book everyone who writes for a living or just writes, period, should have it on their shelf.

Being a foreigner learner of English Language, I am delighted to find such a comprehensive material on good usage of English. It certainly pushed me onto a superior plateau of understanding, and opened my mind not only for strict grammar and rules but also for a different culture not quite my own. Clear in concepts and examples this book would greatly improve your own performance on using English (be it written or spoken). Congratulations Mr. Johnson!! Count me on among your fans.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful guide with answers to many a sticky wicket.......2000-10-20

As a copyeditor, I need not only to know the answers but also to back up the choices I make when editing a manuscript. In that regard I have found this book exceptionally helpful. The author was a copyeditor himself for many years, so he knows the kinds of difficulties I am likely to encounter, and he helps me make the best choice when I am on the horns of a grammatical or stylistic dilemma. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares deeply about writing well and using language to its best effect.

    5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-10-05

As a writer, it's necessary to know the rules of grammar, even if they are to be broken for the sake of the piece being written. The book, "Comma Sutra," is cleverly written with interesting side notes and exercises that are as funny as they are useful.

    5 out of 5 stars Laugh & Learn.......2007-04-11

Comma Sutra: Position Yourself for Success with Good Grammar by Laurie Rozakis, Ph.D. is a hilarious and practical guide to good grammar. I don't think there are any other books on grammar as funny as this one. Having good grammar and knowing how to use punctuation is essential to anyone who wants to make a good impression. As a professional writer and part time copy editor I found out that I had certain deficiencies with my grammar and punctuation. This book helped me improve in several areas. It's a quick read and easily referenced. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a need to improve their writing skills. It makes a great gift as well, as both the gift giver and receiver will enjoy a laugh together.

Sentence building, modifiers, and common grammar are usually covered in grammar school and long forgotten in adulthood, so it's refreshing to find a fun review by grammarian Dr. Laurie Rozakis who links sexual innuendoes with basic grammar for maximum effect. Modern examples and fun social and historical references add spice to the topic, with plenty of examples and exercises throughout encouraging all ages to identify and repair common grammatical errors. A lively, whimsical yet solid references, highly recommended for audiences from young adults through adults.

5 out of 5 stars Laurie Rozakis makes grammar sexy.......2005-07-04

Is there anything better to do on a hot summer Friday night than read and practice lessons from the COMMA SUTRA? Laurie Rozakis makes grammar sexy.

As a high school English teacher, I have made it a goal to develop a way to make the teaching of grammar to high school students something that is rewarding for the teenaged student and something they can actually make connections to. Laurie Rozakis's COMMA SUTRA, I conclude after only 30 minutes of reading since I've returned form the bookstore, will be a great source of inspiration.

I will, with a whisper, echo Tee C. Royal's review and caution that the COMMA SUTRA, because it is sexy, should be previewed and determined by you if it is appropriate for the younger people in your life.

I find great value in the book because it supports my educational philosophy of teaching through metaphor: take something the students do know to introduce a concept that they do not. Put your moral position aside-teenagers know sex. This is why I believe that in a controlled environment that is facilitated by a mature adult there are lessons that are in the COMMA SUTRA that can be modified and be rewarding for the younger student.

I do not want the tone of my review to suggest that the COMMA SUTRA should be reserved for students and teachers. Any user of the English language-that would be you if you are reading this-will find value, insight, and entertainment form the book. After all, being that the English language can be so slippery, and we all try to be cunning linguist, having a mentor to guide you into better positions will only help you add spice in the utterances that come from your tongue and the ink that leaks from your pen.

5 out of 5 stars Getting it right..........2005-04-20

Kama Sutra, Comma Sutra...hmmm, interesting, huh? Can sex sell good grammar? Perhaps there is a way to combine the two, yet produce an instructional guide that is entertaining and informative. Though I don't know Laurie Rozakis' inspiration for coming up with her latest book, I do know that the title immediately caught my attention. COMMA SUTRA: Position Yourself for Success with Good Grammar is a writer's guide with a twist. Playing off the sex guide Kama Sutra, she uses wording more reminiscent of foreplay than dotting "I's" and crossing "T's" to give a memorable lesson most will pay attention to and actually learn.

As there is a lot of sexual innuendo, such as "Assume the Position," "Spice Up Your Life," and "Sex and the Single Sentence," I would definitely wait until the college level to introduce it to students, but it is a great lesson in grammar. Broken into three parts, the book teaches the basics of writing, moves into proper grammar and punctuation, and delves further into problem areas such as subject/verb agreement and misplaced modifiers. Divided into three parts categorized as "Basic Training," "Be a Player," and "Bring It On Home," Rozakis offers fun quotes and tests for the information covered. 5 out of 5 stars Best English Grammar.......2006-12-21

This is the best grammar book! My copy dates from 1966. I had no idea that it was still published. I wish I had bought my kids this book. It is a great reference. It actually shows how to diagram sentences. We knew what adverbs and adjectives were. This would be a great book for anyone. I am so happy to find that it is still in publication.

5 out of 5 stars The best easy to use grammar reference around.......2004-12-08

Any concept that was in your grade school English text book will be here. That concept will be concentrated into the most concise description possible and an example will be given. There are no exercises to test you. This book is not designed to teach you English from scratch. It is an easy to navigate reference that has everything in it. If you are fluent in English and can read and write alright but want to brush up, then this is the perfect book. The descriptions are short, but they are easy to understand and give enough information.

The first half of the book is on grammar. Each grammatical concept gets a few sentences to describe it and an example. The second is on how to write better. Once again each tip gets a short description and an example. Walsh is not trying to teach you how to write by some method. Instead he has points like having a unified theme for the paragraph and tips on how to emphasize a particular point you are making. He also has samples of different types of letters. So even though he is discussing style he is keeping the discussion very objective.

This is a very practical and easy to navigate book on grammar. Now I am out of school and trying to navigate the real world, where how I present myself actually matters. In trying to better my grammar and writing this is an excellent tool. (Of course Walsh would be completely revolted by the grammar of this review. I am trying to review what basically amounts to all the grammar in the entire English language here and it is not so simple.)

If you want practical, then this is the book for you. School libraries should keep a copy for students to access. Anyone who has to write regularly should be familiar with this reference.

3 out of 5 stars Good quotes, but not comprehensive.......2004-11-18

I added many (80+) quotations to my collection from this book, however, as per the title, it is not comprehensive. It's worth reading since (per page 197, quoting Benjamin Disraeli) "The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotation." Some of the quotes are well known (e.g. by Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, or George Bernard Shaw) but quite a few are not. Many are funny--better than a TV sitcom. Some of my favorites are:
        p. 68: Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt. Herbert Hoover.
        p. 79b: If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion. George Bernard Shaw
        p. 89b: If your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep will be your downfall.
        p. 154b: Misers aren't fun to live with, but they make wonderful ancestors. David Brenner
        p. 165a: The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. Thomas Jefferson
        p. 172: Parents were invented to make children happy by giving them something to ignore. Ogden Nash
        p. 173: Everything comes to he who hustles while he waits. Thomas A. Edison
        p. 194: It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first. Ronald Reagan
        p. 196: The objection to Puritans is not that they try to make us think as they do, but that they try to make us do as they think. H. L. Mencken
        p. 202: The man who is always worrying whether or not his soul would be damned generally has a soul that isn't worth a damn. Oliver Wendell Holmes
        p. 212: One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. Elbert Hubbard
        p. 228: He uses statistics as a drunken man use lampposts-for support rather than for illumination. Andrew Lang
        p. 244: If everybody thought before they spoke, the silence would be deafening. Gerald Barzan

3 out of 5 stars Worth the price paid but not very comprehensive........1998-10-07

The quotes are very well organized but not as thorough as expected. A good quick reference guide but if you are in need of quotes on a regular basis this one isn't as complete as expected.

4 out of 5 stars Highly useful and thought provoking.......1998-06-27

Good content. Able to find useful quotations for presentations. In addition I really enjoyed browsing for pleasure and a few good laughs.
