Product Description
Visualizing Data is about visualization
tools that provide deep insight into the
structure of data. There are graphical
tools such as coplots, multiway dot plots,
and the equal count algorithm. There are
fitting tools such as loess and bisquare
that fit equations, nonparametric curves,
and nonparametric surfaces to data.
But the book is much more than just a
compendium of useful tools. It conveys a
strategy for data analysis that stresses
the use of visualization to thoroughly
study the structure of data and to check
the validity of statistical models fitted
to data. The result of the tools and the
strategy is a vast increase in what you can
learn from your data. The book demonstrates
this by reanalyzing many data sets from the
scientific literature, revealing missed
effects and inappropriate models fitted
to data.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful for its intended audience.......2007-09-16
First and foremost, this book has a definite audience: people who need to produce graphs for somewhat sophisticated audiences. This is not a book about producing graphs for mass marketing or other flashy arenas. While this point is implicit throughout the book, it is not often stated explicitly.
The biggest strength of this book, and what makes it worth the purchase, is Cleveland's discussion about the relationship between graphing and visual processing. We've all seen a thousand pie charts, for example, but it turns out that people are not good at visually processing pie charts. The way we process visually has implications for everything from line graph construction to color choices to deciding how to code data on XY scatter plots. Although this information does exist in other places, Cleveland brings it together concisely here. Some of the discussion can get a bit technical, however, so be warned.
This is a great first book to read to learn more about how to construct graphs, and it has enough references to point you to other sources if you feel you need more. I myself have purchased several other books about the visual representation of data (including Cleveland's other book "The Elements of Graphing Data"), but this is where I started, and the information in this book has enriched my understanding of those other books immeasurably.
Behaviour Elucidation par Excellence! U didn't know this B4 .......2005-01-28
Behaviour elucidation is done amazingly well. This book is even more powerful than Cleveland's "Elements of Graphing Data". Key words for what you achieve: incisive, powerful, salient behaviour eludidation. The principles of graphical perception from "Elements" are great (and themselves powerful) but this book invents and emphasizes yet more incisive visualizations. These new visualizations involve considerable computation IN SUPPORT OF CONSTRUCTING the graphs. But the GRAPHS -- and the behaviours they make manifest/salient -- are the point. As in "Elements", Cleveland is not just about the techniques as if they were rote procedure; he helps you build perspective too. This book, in a very real sense, (even explicitly so stated by Cleveland himself) is an alternative paradigm to the pervasive statistical inference paradigm. No wonder, then, that another reviewer (a Statistics student) learned so much he had never even seen before. Boy was "Visualizing" useful for a project I had on univariate data in multiple categorical groups (folding durability; 6 groups of data); Chapter 2 of "Visualizing" TRULY had me seeing things I NEVER would've otherwise. The book also guides you in the computations you need to get to the visualizations.
Elegant Solutions, Clarity of Presentation.......2002-09-20
Simply the best book of its kind.
A Valuable Tool.......2000-05-26
This book was recommended highly to me by a former university professor (and now consultant). It exceeds my expectations. The figures and acompanying explanations are very clear, as is the language throughout. Visualizing Data discusses several tools with which I was not familiar, and clarifies tools that I thought I understood (including box plots). I have taken several university statistics classes, but I believe this book would help anyone involved in displaying or interpreting data. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but when your business depends on it, a well-defined plot or graph can be worth much more. Visualizing Data enables you to produce well-defined plots and graphs with confidence.

Book Description
Computer Supported Argument Visualization is attracting attention across education, science, public policy and business. More than ever, we need sense-making tools to help negotiate understanding in the face of multi-stakeholder, ill-structured problems. In order to be effective, these tools must support human cognitive and discursive processes, and provide suitable representations, services and user interfaces. Visualizing Argumentation is written by practitioners and researchers for colleagues working in collaborative knowledge media, educational technology and organizational sense-making. It will also be of interest to theorists interested in software tools which embody different argumentation models. Particular emphasis is placed on the usability and effectiveness of tools in different contexts.
Among the key features are:
- Case studies covering educational, public policy, business and scientific argumentation
- Expanded, regularly updated resources on the companion website:
www.VisualizingArgumentation.info
"The old leadership idea of "vision" has been transformed in the face of wicked problems in the new organizational landscape. In this excellent book we find a comprehensive yet practical guide for using visual methods to collaborate in the construction of shared knowledge. This book is essential for managers and leaders seeking new ways of navigating complexity and chaos in the workplace."
(Charles J. Palus, Ph.D, Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA)

Book Description
This book offers many new and more easily accessible graphical methods for representing categorical data using SAS software. Graphical methods for quantitative data are well developed and widely used. However, until now with this comprehensive treatment, few graphical methods existed for categorical data. In this innovative book, Friendly presents many aspects of the relationships among variables, the adequacy of a fitted model, and possibly unusual features of the data that can best be seen and appreciated in an informative graphical display. Filled with programs and data sets, this book focuses on the use, understanding, and interpretation of results. Where necessary, the statistical theory with a well-written explanation is also provided. Readers will also appreciate the implementation of these methods in the general macros and programs that are described in the book.

This is the best book I've read about methods to visualize categorical data.

Book Description
Author William G. Jacoby explores a variety of graphical displays that are useful for visualizing multivariate data. The basic problem involves representing information that varies along several dimensions when the display medium (a computer screen or printed page) is inherently two-dimensional. In order to address this problem, Jacoby introduces the concepts of a "data space." He then explains several methods for coding information directly into the plotting symbols used to represent the observations. He next describes pictorial representations of three-dimensional space followed by a discussion of the scatterplot matrix as a way of "flattening out" the multiple dimensions of a multivariate data space. In addition, he examines conditioning plots (which are strategies for "looking into subregions" of the multidimensional data space), and presents the biplot as a technique for showing observations and variables together in a single display. He concludes with a discussion of some general ideas about data visualization. Statistical Graphics for Visualizing Multivariate Data will enable researchers to better explore the contents of a dataset, find the structure in their data, check the underlying assumptions of the statistical model they used, and better communicate the results of their analysis.

Book Description
Visualizing Magnetic Fields: Numerical Equation Solvers in Action provides a complete description of the theory behind a new technique, a detailed discussion of the ways of solving the equations (including a software visualization of the solution algorithms), the application software itself, and the full source code. Most importantly, there is a succinct, easy-to-follow description of each procedure in the code.
The physicist Michael Faraday said that the study of magnetic lines of force was greatly influential in leading him to formulate many of those concepts that are now so fundamental to our modern world, proving to him their "great utility as well as fertility." Michael Faraday could only visualize these lines in his mind's eye and, even with modern computers to help us, it has been very expensive and time consuming to plot lines of force in magnetic fields.
* Overview of the physics of magnetic fields
* Complete description of the theory behind the new technique
* Overview of the theory of Gaussian elimination and Conjugate Gradient equation solvers (including a software application to visualise the algorithms in action)
* Application software itself, the full-source code and a plain English description of each procedure in the code
Customer Reviews:
Electromagnetism CAN be fun!.......2001-05-17
This book is a delight! If only it had been available during those less than interesting lectures on electromagnetic theory..........
Here, the reader can simulate almost any combination of magnets, conductors and external fields and visualize the result in a number of different ways. So this book and its accompanying software will find use in grade school, universities and industry. The visual impact of the approach used by John Beeteson should prove inspirational to younger students. I would recommend that any teacher involved in this subject should buy this book and try it out.
I have used the software on a W98 notebook computer and on a powerful dual processor NT machine. It works just fine in both cases.
Review of "Visualising Magnetic Fields".......2001-02-13
This book provides a no-nonsense introduction to the ideas and concepts of magnetic field visualisation. Electromagnetics is a large and complex field and, as such, can be difficult to obtain an intuitive grasp of. This book presents the basic ideas of magnetic field analysis in a simple and orderly manner with examples to demonstrate the important fundamental concepts. This makes it an ideal companion for more rigourous texts on the subject that go into greater detail where necessary.
The use of numerical analysis tools is widely regarded as essential for more than the simplest of geometries. Frequently these tools require a substantial knowledge in order to be able to apply them to the problem at hand. With the use of the author's visualisation of numerical solvers in action the user is able to understand how the computation process develops in solving in 2D a mathematical representation of the field problem. This understanding is essential if the reader wishes to progress to the more challenging 3D simulation environment, especially for those creating rather than just applying the simulation software.
Overall I found the book useful as a means of introducing the subject and would recommend it to students in their last year of school or as an introductory text in undergraduate studies. In addition to students of Physics and Electrical Engineering, the underlying concepts covered are similar to those for mechanical analysis (stress, strain, distortion) and computational fluid dynamics, including heat flow problems. Thus students in the other Engineering disciplines will find something useful in the book and especially the accompanying software.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to read, lots of good info.......2007-08-14
I enjoyed the author's casual conversational tone through much of the book. It had a lot of good info, some of which was valuable if you were sitting at a keyboard and followed along step-by-step. The author provides a download site for the code within the book, which is a nice alternative to those book CDs that always end up lost.
As a reference, the text wasn't perfect. I think it was really designed to be read rather than thumbed through.
Great title - poorly written.......2007-08-10
I want you to think of the stereo typical college level professor who drones on while writing on the chalk board. Is the professor dumb? Of course not. Does he lack the ability to teach? Yes. This author portrays himself as a user who got tired of depending on IT for meaningful reports. I see this author as a geek's geek. He can quote Visual Basic in his sleep and does so throughout this text. However, this author lacks perspective. He thinks we all just take one look at his VB and a 100 watt light bulb pops-up over our heads. And just like a professor he drones on in his book without approaching a subject from a different perspective. If he's so good at Visio - why didn't he include example diagrams? Just to clarify - I have no problem with Visio books going into VB - my problem is when they don't approach the subject from multiple perspectives to reach more hearts and minds.

some ideas still useful.......2006-10-14
The book approaches visualisation from the vantages of art, science and also of technology. Each chapter is contributed by a different author. All discuss problems where relationships can be depicted in some graphical form. A relationship might arise in urban and regional planning, as given in one example. Basically, there is a situation where we have variables in n-dimensions, with n>3. How to meaningfully display this in 2-space or 3-space?
To a current reader, the book certainly shows its age; written in 1978. The computer graphics and computational resources then available are so primitive to us now. There are no high resolution colour plates. But a reading of the book can still be profitable. You might get ideas that can now be applied more easily and effectively on today's machines.

Excellent book.......2002-04-30
This book is for people who want to learn statistics by conducting experimentations.
With the aid of my notebook, I really enjoyed having a portable statistical laboratory which enhanced my understanding to some difficult statistical theories. The examples also enrich the understanding as well as provide a practical dimension to most of statistical concepts.
