4 out of 5 stars Good introduction book but little detailed topics.......2007-10-13

it is good book those who start to learn french on their own however the biggest drawbacks of the book are the topics are not so detailed. and the cds are just for learning limited conversations but not actual speaking.

5 out of 5 stars An easy way to learn French !.......2007-03-17

I am French and I teach French as a foreign language. I highly recommand thsi method. It starts with simple dialogues which get trickier and trickier but very gradually. The voices, intonation and accent sound really authentic too. A very good choice !

3 out of 5 stars Ultimate French Beginner-Intermediate (Book) (LL(R) Ultimate Basic-Intermed) .......2007-03-08

It needs phonic spelling if the student does not buy the CDs / tapes. It should have a workbook.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of audio and grammer.......2007-02-21

I like this a lot better than Pimsleur and a lot less expensive too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool.......2007-02-15

I am a French major in college and this book with CDs are a perfect tool to supplement my studies. It brushes up my basics and helps me along with what I'm currently learning. I can carry it with me everywhere.

Book Description

This Basic program contains 5 hours of audio-only, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT

What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of French structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak French can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands of words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That same learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

With Pimsleur you get:

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.

The 10 lessons in the Basic French are the same as the first 10 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive French Level 1.

The 10 lessons in Basic French are also the first 10 lessons in the 16-lesson Conversational French edition.

Pimsleur learners progress from either the Basic or the Conversational to the Comprehensive Level 1, and not from Basic to Conversational edition.

3 out of 5 stars There are good and bad ..........2007-10-01

there are definitely strength and weaknesses about these CDs. first of all, it does not come with any written material. If you can't see how a word is spell, how can you memorize it efficiently? The syllabus is very restricted. There are you and I, but how about he, she and they? The strength is that they repeat themselves over and over again, so by the end, you've heard it enough times that it does start to stick. They do emphasize on the correct pronunciation, which is very helpful. I'd give it a 3 star at best.

2 out of 5 stars Buy Behind the Wheel French Instead.......2007-09-06

Pimsleur strikes out again with yet another rigid, low vocabulary, boring, unimaginative and repetitive course which wastes time, money and the mind.
Save your time, your imagination, your motivation while there is still time. I suggest trying Behind the Wheel French for excellent instruction and innovative fast and easy method.Behind the Wheel French (8 CD Course) (Behind the Wheel)

5 out of 5 stars Want to sound good? Here's a good choice.......2007-08-28

If you want your beginner French to sound good, this set will help you learn very acceptable pronunciation. The vocabulary isn't vast, but you won't embarrass yourself or cause the listener to wince and turn away. Let's face it, a short set of CDs isn't going to teach you more than very basic concepts. This set teaches useful sentences and points out some of the nuances of French word liaison. Worth the money and the time to run through the lessons.

1 out of 5 stars Awful. Save money, learn "Something = Quelque Chose".......2007-08-21

I have used several different language programs in the past and this one is hands down THE WORST. On the first 9 of 10 lessons (I just couldn't listen to the 10th) I have learned maybe 50 words: the numbers 1, 2, 8 and 9 (3? 4? 5?) and have been asked to repeat the phrase "quelque chose" approximately 750 times - not an exaggeration - since there is no vocabulary to practice (I'd like to eat SOMETHING. I'd like to drink SOMETHING. I'd like to buy SOMETHING). As for the somethings - eating has no vocab, drinking eventually got to "some wine" and "some beer" (where's the water?) and, you guessed it, nothing to buy. It consists of 2 conversations - "Do you speak or understand French or English?" and "Would you like to eat or drink something?" I don't know the pronouns yet, nor the conjugations for the verb "to be." If I need to ask for directions, the only responses I will understand is "It is here, it is not here, it's down there, it's not down there." How about if it is down 2 blocks and turn left and across the street? I guess I will just get lost. Incredibly frustrating to use if you have any aptitude or pressing need to learn French. Essentually, I can express the basic pleasantries when I walk into a store, but that is about all. THERE ARE NO TRAVEL REFERENCES - words like tickets, train, airport, etc. are completely missing. Instant Immersion DESTROYS this program.

5 out of 5 stars Love Pimsleur.......2006-11-30

I got the basic tapes to see if I would even care to learn French. I can now greet people, ask for things, and have a enough basic understanding to be able to have a very simple conversation. Now I want more. They make my one hour commute through Los Angeles fly by. Once you've learned a few phrases find a dictionary to look up how the words are spelled. (maintenent sounds like mahntnah spoken through your nose; aussi sounds like o,c) I think it's amazing that anyone learns to read French, but I'm learning to speak it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Language Acquisition Bang for the Buck.......2007-05-12

The Living Language grammar series books are excellent adjuncts to regular college or high school language texts or on their own for one familiar with the language acquisition process. For $10-$20 (including grammar book, 3 CD's, and dictionary) complete bought at Amazon, anyone can afford to begin really learning another language (French and Spanish in my case). REMEMBER: Search by the ISBN# for the best prices. Since repetition or practice on a DAILY basis is key to slowly picking up another language, the lightweight, portable paperback Living Language books provide the key to practicing your new language anywhere you happen to be sitting for a few minutes. The lessons are short, concise and quite accurate. The Living Language grammar lessons are arranged in LOGICAL order after the immersion style lessons, which are excellent for de-stressing and taking the fear from learning new and generally unfamiliar foreign language grammar styles. Exercises are included with each grammar lesson. There is vocabulary building and there is more than one word/phrase given for most different meanings which is one of the keys to creating neural net pathways in memory for holding onto a new language, it's idioms, colloquialisms, etc.

Overall the Living Language series in any language offered is KEY to picking up a new language providing ready access to spot practice sessions of short duration to match our short-term opportunities for practice in very busy modern life. Enjoy!!!

Native language speakers generally recommend expensive programs like Rosetta Stone. However, Living Language provides language learning access to the average citizen.

2 out of 5 stars french language course.......2007-01-19

I had hoped to be able to use the course while driving around. However the course is very dependent upon the printed material which makes it useless for what I intended.

3 out of 5 stars Not good for 'virgin' learners.......2006-12-25

I bought this french lesson kit 3 years ago, before a trip to France. I didnt know any french whatsoever, never had a class, watched a movie, nothing. Thinking back, I think the package said "beginner to intermediate". I consider myself a quick study and thought it'd be perfect.

I had a difficult time learning. And it wasnt until a few years later (now) that I understand why I wasnt learning anything. This kit is designed to learn by memorization. It doesnt focus on structure. It gives you page after page of "everyday" sentences, then has vocab at the end. But it doesnt explain HOW the french language works. So you're memorizing and then you quickly forget. It does have a lil something about the etre and avoir. But thats it. It doesnt explain things like inversion, but we're supposed to memorize it??

With that said, this is a GREAT book for intermediate level. It is excellent for honing your pronunciation skills, the listening CDs go on for HOURS. If you've had at least ONE semester of french, then this is perfect for you. Because thats when you already have an understanding of the language, and you're more focused on expanding your vocab and pronunciation/speaking. This kit is PERFECT for that.

5 out of 5 stars French for Okies.......2006-11-06

Starting a new language as a 40-something is no small undertaking. This package is very entreatable because of its logical progression through the mechanics of the language and because its example recordings are clear (on three CDs). I would recommend this product to anybody wanting to make a serious effort at a new language.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-03-14

The book I have received is perfect. This was the first time I have bought second hand products via internet and I am really satisfied with that!

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-06-29

The title of this book "The Everythng Learning French..... in No Time" is a bit deceiving. I have taught intensive French for over 25 years and was the Director of an Intensive French Program. You simply cannot learn French or any other language "in no time", a few key words and expressions perhaps. And of course there are people who are trilingual and are just "picking up" French, but in general it is deceptive to claim to be able to teach a casual tourist a foreign language in a few classes. There are plenty of Elementary French books as well as "method" type books out there. Some are better than others. This one wasn't bad just not one I would consider using. The pronunciation part was especially poor.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Learning French Book.......2007-02-17

I found this book to be very informative and easy to learn the French language. It has everything you need to know, very good.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal as a refresher, NOT for learning the language.......2006-10-22

First, this is an excellent French reference book. I took quite a bit of French in school, but needed some in-depth review so I could help my home-schooled daughter with her "passe compose". Perfect book for that... or if you need to review your reflexive verbs, etc. Well laid out... rules are explained in depth, but in very understandable terms.

Unfortunately, though, this book markets itself as a beginner's book. "Learning a language has never been so quick and easy - or so much fun!" the back cover boasts. I love the French language, but this is NOT a "fun" book... it is 98% grammar, 2% practice. You can literally go pages without seeing a sentence in French.

5 out of 5 stars Great refresher book.......2004-02-02

This is a great book, it has everything a person who wants to learn French wants in a book.
Has grammar rules, basic phrases, verbs rules, has lots of tables with vocabulary.
It is also excellent for a person who wants to get a quick refresher of the language.
Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the language.......2004-01-13

This book and CD set provides an elementary foundation in French. The complaints others have made about the brevity of the exercises and dialogues are accurate; however, before people dismiss the Living Language series they should recall its purpose. If you want to get a basic understanding of a language without mortgaging your house, Living Language is for you. The Pimsleur progams that everyone speaks so highly of come in two versions--one with no written material for roughly the same price and another with a $300 price tag.

Living Language set can easily be supplemented with de Sales' French Verb Drills and The Rosetta Stone Language CDs for additional exercises and hours of additional audio material.

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate French: Basic-Intermediate.......2003-09-17

Unless you are already fluent in French - this book is of no use to you. It starts off having you repeat phrases without teaching you any basic words.

Take a class first and this MIGHT help later on for review.

4 out of 5 stars More Exercises Please.......2003-06-01

"Ultimate French" is not an easy course book and I can understand some people's reservations. However, I have found it to be the most comprehensive and enjoyable book for adults who want to embark on a serious pathway to French language success. I began studying with the "Living Language" series (which I also recommend for drill practice) but eventually I wanted something that contained more than phrases. After exploring numerous options, "Ultimate French" was the only one which appealed to me and after purchasing the coursebook and audio cd's, I am more than pleased with my purchase. I echo other reviewer's dissatisfaction with the exercises after each chapter though. In fact, I emailed the publisher and suggested they provide a supplementary book just for exercises. Despite this shortfall, I recommend "Ultimate French" as a thorough introduction to the French language. I am looking forward to starting the Advanced course.

3 out of 5 stars Do you really want to learn French?.......2002-09-07

I've used different language sets to learn, or start to learn, a few languages and now have a clear idea of what works & what doesn't. Most sets are designed for the non-serious student who wants something "easy" or flashy. The problem with these is that you don't end up learning the language. Ultimate French is very high quality and even fun, but its method is not for the serious student. The drills are very weak. A series with audio tapes/CDs that works is the Foreign Service Institute lessons. These are also marketed by Barron's and the National Audio-Visual Center. I haven't tried Pimsleur, though.

    4 out of 5 stars Just a thought.......2002-04-02

Just bought it recently. "User friendly" for fresh beginners who haven't got a clue or ear for the language.

4 out of 5 stars Living Language course rules!.......2006-12-23

I've used Living Language courses since high school. My opinion is that they are overall the finest way to be introduced to a foreign language.

They use sentences grouped by grammatical function so that one learns (unconsciously) the grammar along with the vocabulary. There also is supplementary grammar if one wants to dig more into the machinery of the language.

I still benefit from having had my first introduction to Spanish from these courses. Now, having decided to review my univerisity French, I find this is still the finest CD on learning basic French.

    Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good tool for those with some background in French.......2006-01-09

I have been using Beyond the Basics French for about a week and I've found it very useful--it is definitely worth the time and money. It is not for someone with no background (hence, their "The Basics" I'm guessing). In grad school I had twelve hours or French (six studying abroad in France) and this course has been not only a good review but has built my vocab and, thank god, explained some grammatical/idiomatic stuff that I'm sure we covered in class but that didn't quite click with me b/c I'm not wonderfully adept at learning a new language.

If you've had at least 101-102 French, you should be fine with this. My only complaint is that some conversations aren't spoken slowly enough for me, but putting this on your iPod or mp3 makes it easy to back up a little be as often as you need to.

If you don't have a great intro/intermediate French dictionary, Harper Collins' French Beginner's Dictionary is the best I've found.

Excellent! I purchased the Italian, French and Spanish. The books and CDs are extremely helpful with my three classes. As I am also studying Spanish and Italian, it is a great way to compare the languages.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Instruction Manual for Real Cooks.......2003-10-28

Gourmet's Basic French Cookbook by Louis Diat is not your concept of the traditional American cookbook. It is far better than your usual "1tsp of this, 1 cup of that" . Mr. Diat teaches you the important basic framework of cooking methods and the concept of subtle blending of flavors that can be applied to all foods anywhere. He starts you with the correct way to cut vegetables and making simple sauces and soups. You can build on this and work your way up to the most elaborate of dishes, such as Oeufs Reine Amelie. From his simple leek and potato soup he learned to make as a child, he later invented Vichyssois. Mr. Diat was a Master Chef in some of the finest hotels in Paris and New York and provides many interesting stories in each section of his book.

5 out of 5 stars very well written and tantalizing.......2000-09-05

Louis Diat's work is one of the classics, and the recipes are well explained, relatively straightforward to follow, and produce delicious results. If you like beef, try his recipe for Chateaubriande a la bouquetiere pour deux, a filet mignon dish with mixed vegetables (which can be expanded to serve more than two), and I guarantee you'll be hooked the first time, and anybody can make it following his recipe. It will be as good as anything you would pay a premium for in a fine restaurant, and impress the daylights out of your guests. This is one of my favourite cookbooks, and well worth seeking out. Recommended with enthusiasm.
