Product Description
A printer's error in the August 2005 printing of the Concise Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage led to the majority of the diacritics being deleted, creating errors and rendering the dictionary unusable. These faulty books have all been recalled and are now completely replaced with new, corrected books. This convenient pocket dictionary--an abridged and updated edition of the acclaimed Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage--is designed for both the English speaker learning Arabic and the Arabic speaker learning English. It records the different levels of usage found in newspapers, radio, television, and films, providing major Arabic dialectal equivalents for familiar, colloquial, and slang words. Ideal for the student or traveler, the dictionary includes: * Nearly 40,000 entries providing English headwords with multiple meanings and their nearest Arabic equivalent * For Arabic speakers: phonetic equivalents for headwords, phrases illustrating unexpected and alien idioms, and explanations of headwords denoting concepts new to the Arab world * For English speakers: vowels and diacritics included in the Arabic text, irregular plurals of nouns, and simple verb conjugations in the imperfect tense * Meticulously transcribed Arabic characters for easy reading

Defects.......2006-11-10
I ordered this dictionary twice, and both times it came with severe printing defects (dots missing on many Arabic letters, making everything unreadable). I finally returned it and am contemplating what other dictionary to buy. Content-wise, it also didn't look so impressive, there were a lot of words you would think it should have that weren't in there.
Do Not Buy This Dictionary.......2006-08-21
This is a terrible dictionary. Many of the words are spelled incorrectly and many of the definitions, while technically correct, are absolutely nonsensical.
Shell out a little more for a lot more quality.......2006-05-02
i'm very sorry i bought this book. It may be concise, and it may be cheaper, but one shouldn't sacrifice spelling for saving a few dollars! The concise edition drops the dots off many of the letters, thus either misspelling the word or creating letters that don't exist. i borrowed the full-sized edition and found it to be fine. Don't waste your money and your sanity on this version!
The best one I have found.......2005-11-20
This is the best Arabic dictionary I have found so far, but I still have a couple complaints about it. There are a few things missing, like the names of countries, and sometimes the print is small and hard to read. The Al-Mawrid dictionary is more complete, but can be overwhelming, especially for new students, becuase when you look up an English word, it lists a whole bunch of Arabic words and it is hard to figure out which on is the right word. This dictionary, however, has very clear explaination on when to use what word. I would give it five stars if it were a little bit more comprehensive. For the serious Arabic student, this is the best English-Arabic dictionary out there.
For a companion to this, I suggest the Hans-Wehr. Someone complained that this dictionary only included English-Arabic, but that is common for serious acedemic dictionaries though, because it would be huge dictionary if both were included in one volume.
Not the best dictionary you can buy..........2005-07-30
While this dictionary does contain a lot of entries, it is English to Arabic only; there is no Arabic to English. It does however show the short vowels, though the script is a little frustratingly small. I took it back once I found out it was only a one-way dictionary. The Arabic Practical Dictionary by Hippocrene is much better (though it doesnt' show short vowels however).

Very clear and legible Arabic typeface.......2003-11-27
Still a beginning student not yet qualified to comment on many aspects of this dictionary, I am however very pleased with the large, clear, easy-on-the-eyes Arabic font in this full-size edition. I steered away from the smaller formatted and much cheaper edition for fear that as a new reader I would not be able to make out the intricate script. [Years ago as a student of Khmer, another fairly intricate writing system, I first found myself reading documents with a magnifying glass, but once I reached a more advanced level everything seemed clear enough. I imagine it takes most students a while to adjust to what at first seems to be very strange and tiny scribbles.] Most Arabic entries seem fully voweled, so I do not see the need for the English phonetics that another reviewer demanded. I used the "Fun with Arabic" CD-ROM to get past the phonetics. I'm pleased at what I got for my money. I also followed another reviewer's suggestion and ordered the Al Mawrid dictionary as well. If you are going to put in the huge amount of time required to learn a foreign language, you'd best invest early in the game.
ATTENTION SELF STUDY! No English pronunciation!!!.......2003-06-20
I have used an English/Japanese dictionary that had the Japanese pronuciation in English characters as well as in Japanese. This book contains no such function. If you don't read Arabic, this book is of very limited use. You will have no way of determining the pronunciation. THIS BOOK DOES NOT SUPPORT SELF STUDY! Such an obvious oversight by the Editors and Publishers of this book is deeply disappointing.

Just an average dictionary.......2007-09-03
I wouldn't say it's a bad dictionary, but there's nothing that stands out about this one. I have the American Heritage Dictionary, 4th Edition paperback version. Comparing these two, they both failed about the same number of time when looking up words; this one just slightly better since it is thicker. I strongly recommend Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary 2nd Edition over any other desktop dictionaries. Since Amazon has excellent return policy on books, if you don't believe my words, simply get this one and Cambridge one and see which one you like better.
A well-worn (and tape-fortified) mainstay always at my hand.......2006-07-31
This is my "resolution" to the need for the large hard-cover versions of my favorite dictionaries. It gets to sleep in the drawer at night, but mainly it lives on top of the desk - always at hand; often consulted. I won't claim never to make errors, but I do try to avoid them. The Oxford Dictionary of Current English is how I do it.
I liked it so much I bought two copies!.......2005-12-05
Yes, I actually own two copies of this dictionary. One is kept at work (and gets borrowed several times per week by co-workers) and the other is at home next to my computer.
I bought this dictionary not only for the brand name 'Oxford' but also for the way in which the entries are presented. The word being defined is highlighted in clean bold text and this helps the words stand out from the page. That makes finding an entry quicker than in some dictionaries and thus makes the book more enjoyable to use.
Renders the competition useless.......2005-02-18
For anyone frustrated by dictionaries that seem to have every word except the one you're looking for, Oxford provides the best solution (that I know of). The key is it's thick and has over 140,000 definitions, twice the amount of some other dictionaries. It defines combination of words not just single words, has intelligible definitions and uses a font that is easy on the eyes. It has let me down a couple of times but this is the exception rather than the rule. This is the best dictionary I have used yet and I recommend it for a frustration-free dictionary experience.
One of the best of the paperbacks.......2003-04-03
I use dictionaries every day in my high school courses, and this is one that I often recommend to my students. The Oxford Dictionary of Current English is one of the best, and I've seen many of them. Its name gives you an idea of its usefulness. There are many current terms that you will not find in other dictionaries, especially pocket paperbacks. I highly recommend it, especially for high school classes!

Student Reference.......2006-03-12
It's the best Thesaurus I have used in writing term papers for college.
Should work fine for most people.......2003-02-04
This is a very nice thesaurus. It is not altogether as complete as one might hope, but should serve the needs of most students who don't need to do really extensive writing.
excellent helper.......2002-05-02
this book has 15,000 entries and over 350,000 synonyms and a writer's toolkit. With Oxford, we all know how respected it is, but what impressed me most was the superior print face. This thesaurus did not make me go blind trying to read it. The paper is high quality that will withstand constant use of a writer, and provides excellent contrast, and in easy to read fonts.
I am sorry, don't care how good the dictionary is, if it is not made to prevent eyestrain it gets low marks for me. This one gets an A+ and a big THANK YOU for that quality.
A MUST FOR EVERY HOME AND OFFICE.......2001-08-20
Assiduously edited this thesaurus offers up to the minute listings of words we use, hear or read everyday. Included are 15,000 main entries and some 350,000 synonyms with notations that make clear the subtle nuances of inference among several closely related words.
Headwords, presented in alphabetical order, are in eye friendly bold print. Following each headword is its part of speech, such as "accredited" is followed by "adjective."
When a certain word has the same spelling but a different meaning, which is known as a homograph, each meaning is treated as a separate word. Thus "bank" us found as "a grassy slope" and as "financial institution" under separate headings.
Synonyms are included in each listing, and the volume contains a punctuation guide, a usage guide, as well as a listing of easily confused words.
At sea as to the proper usage of "alternate" and "alternative"? Just keep this handy volume at the ready.
Wordsmiths will delight in the clarity and presentations of words in this thesaurus, and all of us will benefit from its use.
Oxford American Thesaurus of Current English.......2000-06-20
I found this thesaurus to be an excellent addition to any reference collection. It is comprehensive and takes all synonyms into account. There is a definite American bias but is serves it's purpose. With 15,000 main entries and over 350,00 synonyms, this thesaurus is the only one you will need.

Bigger and better than ever before, its new features include: BL The most up-to-date spellings, with improved coverage of meaning and usage based on a computerized `snapshot' of today's language BL 25% more content than the previous edition BL New words, including such items as holiday village, nip and tuck, central locking, ragga, house-sit, Balti, pesto, Cajun, road-pricing, Feyman diagram, supermodel, and slaphead BL New, more up-to-date pronunciation system, representing today's received pronunciation BL Over 300 new boxed usage notes with guidance on good English BL New, clearer etymologies BL easier to use with more compounds as main entries
Customer Reviews:
Another handy dictionary........1999-11-05
Finding a good dictionary to work with is hard. The COD is a good mate when studying English or just looking things up, but if you realy want to have a broad dictionary with a lot of examples, maybe you'd better use the Oxfors Advanced Learners or the Collins Cobuild ( I myself do not like this one because of its very thin paper). But if you neet a compact and reliable dictionary, then this is a good bargain.

It was bigger than I expected - when it said pocket size - I expected that size - but it is the size of a small dictionary. Other than that it was wonderful
Awful.......2007-01-21
If you frequently use this reference, you'll quickly find that Oxford has seen fit to cut out a great many words. If you want a quick reference without sacrificing comprehensiveness, I suggest you look elsewhere.
Great but not Pocket Size.......2007-01-06
It's an excellent and invaluable resource that I suggest to all of the students in my high school classes. I recommend it to everyone who asks me about dictionaries.
It's only pocket size if you have enormous pockets.
Very thorough -- but you'll need one BIG pocket.......2006-10-14
I take this dictionary to depositions on the advice of a very experienced attorney to counter the other parties' objections for "vague." When they claim a question is vague or ambiguous, I pull out this bad boy and clear up any vagueness. However, when I bought it I was hoping it would be a bit smaller to more easily fit into my litigation case -- but, be that as it may, I would not trade its level of detail for a couple of inches.
America is the key word here folks.......2006-01-12
Oxford is a university, and publisher located in the brithish isles off the coast of europe. If i want a dictionary of american english then i'll buy one from a yanque publisher.

Book Description
The Oxford Dictionary of Pronunciation, now published in paperback, is the most up-to-date record of the pronunciation of British and American English. Based on research by a joint UK and US team of linguistics experts, with support from Oxford English Dictionaries, it is a unique survey of how English is really spoken in the twenty-first century. The dictionary offers a full reappraisal of the pronunciation models for modern British and American English. Whereas other pronunciation dictionaries use a model which is rooted in the speech of the middle of the last century, this dictionary presents a model of actual, modern English. It is also the most comprehensive dictionary of its type available, and the only one to give full transcriptions for British and American English for every word. British English is recorded using modern RP, while the aim in recording American English pronunciations has been to produce a standard model, with avoidance of marked regional features. Pronunciations have been recorded using the internationally recognized IPA.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent pronunuciation dictionary.......2007-10-18
The market for this type of dictionary is traditionally dominated by the umpteenths re-editions of Daniel Jones' dictionary, so much so that university phonetics instructors often seem not to know that there are others...Well, they should have a look at this one. Compared to the other new (and great) pronunciation dictionary, that of John Wells [published by Longman's], Clive Upton's dictionary does not have the articles, polls about variants, and other useful add-ons of John Wells' dictionary: what we have here is a basic (but comprehensive) dictionary with the pronunciation of each word given in British and American English. And that is all, but the transcription system is probably the most accurate of the three dictionaries. If you are a serious student of English phonetics, I would recommend having both John Wells' and Clive Upton 's dictionaries - Clive Upton's for immediate reference andd John Wells' if you want to go further. They complete each other nicely. You can safely forget about Daniel Jones' - even it is still recommended by most university instructors, who would be well-advised to update their reading lists at least once a century.
Let me save you the trouble..........2003-03-29
If you are looking for a pronunciation dictionary that is current, lists variants, discusses variants that have equal numbers of adherents, makes suggestions for preferred pronunciations, gives data about what percentage of people prefer such and such a pronunciation, and is attractively printed, do not get this one. This is plainly packaged, has very little explanatory information (Longman's has over 200 charts and many explanatory notes), gives no data as to who prefers what or how many, gives little direction, etc. A dull affair all around. The Longman Pronunciation Dictionary is multicolored, informative, and fascinating to read. When there are dramatic variants, Longman explains the issues clearly. Longman also includes a removable phonetics chart so you do not need to keep flipping to the key in the front of the book. I am a speech therapist and I find myself going to Longman on a daily basis while the Oxford dictionary sits on the shelf.

Book Description
The Oxford Dictionary of American Political Slang illuminates a rich and colorful segment of our language. Readers will find informative entries on slang terms such as "Beltway bandit" and "boondoggle," "angry white male" and "leg treasurer," "juice bill" and "Joe Citizen," "banana superpower" and "the Big Fix." We find not only the meaning and history of familiar terms such as "gerrymander," but also of lesser-known terms such as "cracking" (splitting a bloc of like-minded voters by redistricting) and "fair-fight district" (which refers to areas redistricted to favor no political party). Each entry includes the definition of the word, its historical background, and illuminating citations, some going back more than 200 years. Selected entries will have extended encyclopedic notes. The book also features sidebar essays on topics such as political words in Blogistan; a short history of "big cheese"; all about chads and the 2000 election; the suffix "-gate" and all the related Watergate terms; and the naming of legislation. Political junkies, policy wonks, journalists, and word lovers will find this book addictive reading as well as a reliable guide to one of the more colorful corners of American English.
