Book Description

A complete reference grammar book of Spanish. Explanations are provided in English, examples translated, for easy understanding. The grammar is completely cross-referenced for quick access to further information if needed. Summary charts give an overview of each topic and enable readers to check information at a glance. Complete conjugation tables give immediate access to verb forms. The appendix contains a list of more that one thousand verbs with their complement structure. Another special feature of the book is the self-correction strategies which help users diagnose and correct their own errors, as they learn the language and use it to communicate their thoughts orally and in writing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Starting Point and Indispensable Reference.......2007-06-12

This book has been so useful to me, I had to write. When I started learning Spanish, I bought this and read it straight through (well, except for the appendices). It's a great overview of the language and I'm about to start over and read it again.

I use the conjugation tables almost every day instead of "501 Spanish Verbs" or the "Verb Manual."

It's so packed with what you need to know that if I had to pick one book to take on a trip, I'd have to think long and hard before choosing between this and a dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend SGIL for intermediate spanish students.......2007-04-22

I have been studying Spanish for about a year, taking Spanish classes in Mexico, Central America and South America. When not taking formal classes, I study on my own, using high school textbooks I find locally (e.g Peru), reading books and newspapers, watching T.V. and movies, and conversing with the locals. At this point, I would classify my proficiency as intermediate to advanced. Now that you know where I coming from here is my review.

The SGIL generally answers any question I have about Spanish grammer. It provides clear and concise explanations in English, with numerous examples in Spanish and English. The index and the page number references used throughout the text make it easy to quickly find any topic of interest. There is an extremely useful list of verbs with examples of different usages, meanings, complements, and modes for each verb. The only thing I have found not to like is that a few times I have looked for verbs in the verb list that were not there. Bottom line, I am very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative Approach designed for the self-learner .......2007-01-21

There are a few things that you need to learn Spanish on your own.
Besides a Spanish verb conjugation book (501 Spanish Verbs - highly recommended), a Spanish/English dictionary, Spanish audio course (Learning Spanish Like Crazy - highly recommended), you'll need Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners. Alternatively, you can use the Practice Makes Perfect book series to learn the Spanish grammar. But if you are learning on your own you may like this one better. That's because this book was specifically made for the person that is learning Spanish on his own.

Although I sometimes have the opportunity to practice with native speakers, for the most part, I am learning on my own. This book is giving me plenty of value, especially by teaching me different self-correcting techniques that I can use in place of an instructor. Avigail Azoulay and Arie Vicente's self-correction method has also helped me build my confidence in speaking Spanish without the aid of a Spanish teacher.

If you are an independent learner, get this book, get 501 Spanish Verbs, and get Learning Spanish Like Crazy (Nivel Uno and Nivel Dos), and you'll learn plenty of Spanish without attending classes or having an istructor. If you are not an independent learner and need someone to keep you motivated to study, then you shouldn't even be considering this book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice reference book.......2007-01-09

This book has helped me with my Spanish studies. I've used it as a reference book in addition to class materials, and also while studying idependently. Good presentations for almost any grammatical topic for a beginning to intermediate student. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it didn't give you the English definitions for the verb complements at the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!! Reference Book .......2006-08-01

Excellent reference book for independent learners and learners taking s Sapanish course . In my opinion, it will help with increasing one's understanding of, "how to say (or want to say) in Spanish" and "what you said {or want(ed) to convey} from your thoughts in English" and how to say it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SayHola dot com says this book is great.............2007-09-24

Our online course at SayHola dot com teaches you how to speak the Spanish Language but this book is a great tool for practicing and building Vocabulary. We recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A fine book for advancing your Spanish grammar.......2007-02-19

I am truly enjoying the exercises in the book. I have seen some typos and there are times a question (rarely) doesn't reflect someting already covered; however, these are minimal. I feel the notes are helpful in rounding out the lessons and giving some flavor to lanuage study. I have yet to start the advance Spanish grammar, but I own it and am looking forward to continuing my studies.

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to Spanish, w/ vocabulary and dialogues.......2007-01-10

The title is a little misleading, as this is not just a grammar reference, but a near-comprehensive course for learning elementary Spanish. It consists of dialogues with vocabulary lists followed by exercises that teach you the grammar rules and help you remember the vocab. The only thing that's missing is audio recordings of the dialogues. I haven't worked my way all the way through it yet, but so far it's been pretty useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for self learners.......2006-11-11

I have dozens of Spanish books for self-learners and the Practical Spanish Grammar and Advanced Spanish grammar are clearly the best. Each chapter begins with a comprehensive, relevant (to that chapter) list of vocabulary words. The vocabulary list is annotated with footnotes to differetiate how the meanings of some words may vary from Latin America to Spain, etc. Following the vocabulary are grammar rules. After that are self-correcting exercises using the vocabulary and grammar the student has just studied. The book is organized for the student to learn as efficiently as possible.

2 out of 5 stars Languae Learning is a PROCESS.......2006-04-09

The problem with any "book" of language learning is that it over looks a very import distinction between language acquisition and language learning. There is a difference and it is not too difficult concept.

Language acquisition is what your child is doing from the age 0-7 years of age long before learning his native tongue. The spoken fluency a child acquires before going off to his first day of formal school is what you as an adult need to be doing long before beginning any sort of formal language "learning" is attempted such as what is in these books.

If you do not engage in language acquisition before engaging in language learning then all you will become is an "exegete" of the language. You will be able to read written text but not be able to speak the language because you never "acquired" the language!

Language acquisition is accomplished in the identical way you learned your native language. True immersion will be the hearing first of hundreds of thousands of repetitions of the target language before any production.

Book Description

The updated 7th edition of this combination textbook and workbook is designed as an introduction to Spanish for classroom use. The emphasis is on oral proficiency—conversational speaking and listening comprehension—but the authors also present detailed instruction in the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing in Spanish. The book is filled with exercises and answers, true-to-life dialogues, humorous cartoons, illustrations of Hispanic art, and photos that capture the flavor of Spanish culture in Spain and Latin America. In this new edition, the lessons have been enriched with subtopics to enhance conversational speech. Also new with this edition are four compact discs that have been updated in content, and which replace the previously available tape cassettes, This audio component supplements the book, providing valuable instruction in listening comprehension and correct pronunciation of spoken Spanish. A teacher's manual is also available.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars spanish now! level 1.......2007-10-13

Although I ordered and received the edition my teacher dictated, the book does not contain the CDs that it was supposed to contain. It also seems to have text (dialogue) that is different from the same editions that other students in my class use.
Can't explain the differences.

4 out of 5 stars A solid value, but not without its flaws.......2007-06-22

I bought this book before leaving to spend a year in Latin America. I wanted to hit the ground running with my Spanish, so I did many of the exercises before leaving.

The good: For twenty bucks, you get nearly 500 pages worth of study material. There is a good mix of rules explanations, reading passages, pictures, puzzles, and lots and lots of drills. The latter can get mind numbing but in the end is necessary to absorb the stuff. I found that if you plow the material diligently, and combine this book with a good, cheap spanish learning audio CD (like living language), you can really get a lot for your money. The version (though it was the seventh edition) I bought did not have its own audio CD, so I cannot speak to it.

The negatives: I agree with the poster who called the editing of the book sloppy. There is an irritating lack of attention-to-detail, including typos, sentence drills on phrases, though grammatically correct, would never be said by any real person. Worst of all, some words are introduced in questions before they are ever covered in the material!!! It seems like no one ever gave this book a thorough, cover to cover read for continuity and flow.

Even with all of these negatives, I am happy with the purchase. It really has allowed to me to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. It is a good value purchase, but not without its flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish .......2007-06-11

A great reference-teaching book on how to speak and read Spanish. Very thick, lots of things to read and work through.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for classroom or self study........2007-05-08

This is one of the books that we use with our students. It is simple and uncluttered, and provides ample opportunity for homework or self-study.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Recommend.......2007-04-04

I really took my time before ordering this book, and now I am glad that I did. This book is by far the best in this category.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Verb Tenses workbook is great!.......2007-10-12

This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-11

This is an excellent book. Lots of great information, written in an easy to understand format.I just finished a class on spanish, and only after reading this book, and doing the excercises am I starting to really understand.

4 out of 5 stars Spanish Verb Tenses.......2007-08-02

This is so good, the teacher thought I had someone of Spanish desent help me write my papers!! So I actually had to dumd down, a little, WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better When Used with Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs.......2007-07-01

As Spanish verb resources go, Practice Makes Perfect is almost as good as
Christopher Kendris's 501 Spanish Verbs.
When you have to go to Mexico on business, with no knowledge of Spanish at all, and with just two weeks to learn to speak the language, you do whatever you can to learn.
I bought and tried everything, including this book. It is good and I learned a lot from it.
My best results in verbs and expecially in learning to speak and understand the language came from Behind the Wheel Spanish by Language Dynamics. Great course.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

5 out of 5 stars How I am successfully using this book to become more conversational in Spanish? .......2007-06-25

This book is fantastic for teaching Spanish grammar for verb tenses. It goes great with a Spanish verb conjugation book such as 501 Spanish verbs. One of the most interesting things about this book is the vocabulary that you will learn. I was only expecting to learn how to conjugate verbs with this book. But I learned Spanish verb conjugation and so many new vocabulary words that I was able to put to use almost immediately with Spanish speakers. The exercises were also fun to do, and I never felt bored when studying with this book.

Many people say that you should first learn how to speak the language and reach an intermediate conversational level before attempting to study the grammar from a book. I disagree. I have used this book with my favorite Spanish course, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and I am very happy with the progress that I have made. And I feel that this book has helped me to develop a better understanding of "why" sentences are said the way that they are in Spanish. Learning Spanish Like Crazy is probably the best self-study course for learning authentic Spanish from this side of the Atlantic, but it left me with certain questions about using Spanish verbs. But I have been able to use this book to successfully fill in those gaps and become more conversational. If you are truly serious about speaking fluent Spanish, then you'll want to order this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great help with learning Spanish.......2007-10-11

Deciding to try and renew and expand my college spanish has been hard, but since I work as a nurse in the hospital it is also necessary. This book has been very helpful in finding verbs and conjugating them. However you'll need more than just this book to really put things together.

4 out of 5 stars great for anglophones.......2007-08-16

however I would have rather an all Spanish book on this topic since I find it easier to understand/comprehend Spanish grammar instruction, in Spanish

this book is a fine addition to my library and I recommend it

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, but even Better with Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-08-14

I believe that if you do not know how the words are to be joined, then you cannot speak the language.
Prepositions are essential to learning any language, including Spanish.
Dorothy Richmond accomplises this task in a straightforward and easy-to-understand way.
I recommend that you use this amazing reference with Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs and text. In this fashion, you can get the 'hands on' practice you need while you drive, hearing the prepositions and pronouns being spoken by a wonderful native speaker in the comfort of your car.
Practice Makes Perfect does not have CDs so this is an excellent approach.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

5 out of 5 stars A new learning experience.......2007-08-11

I have been studying Spanish for five years, for the most part independently, using CDs text books and other forms of learning tools. I had a good sense of the language and could converse in simple sentences, with a patient listener. The main reason I could not move forward at a greater pace was a lack of command of the subject matter contained in the book.

I teach English to immigrants and my current student speaks it better than most. She can tell me when I make mistakes in Spanish, but cannot provide the rules (not many of us think of grammar rules after high school). This book does that and achieves it in a fashion that I think is so "right on" that one cannot go wrong.

Thank you Ms. Richmond!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quantity and quality.......2007-10-06

Here is a standout presentation of the ins and outs of contemporary Spanish. Examples of idiomatic usage are generously supplied, but fine points do not get in the way of the basics. Altogether an exemplary text--well-orgnized, lucid, and thorough.

5 out of 5 stars Great Advanced Grammar.......2007-09-22

When a Spanish teacher reccommended this book to me, I was reluctant to purchase yet another grammar book. However, this book is extremely detailed and is great for the advanced student. It is more than any college textbook. Keep in mind it is a book of explanations and not a book of exercises, but it does answer a lot of questions that an advanced undergraduate, or first-year grad student has.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish Grammar book.......2007-09-10

If you are beyond the beginners level, then this is the equivalent to a Grammar bible. everything you need is in this book. Contrary to the opinion of a previous reviewer, I HIGHLY recommend that any SERIOUS student read this book in its entirety. I did it and probably will do so again.

5 out of 5 stars Ditto to all 5-star reviews below.......2007-08-04

If you were stuck on a desert island teaching Spanish for the next year, this would be the one book to have with you. There is no close second. Even if you are not the geeky, I-love-grammar type, this is the kind of book that you open to check one little detail and 45 minutes later you find yourself still poring over other bits of information. The authors' style is completely professional, but unlike so many other volumes of Spanish grammar they manage to keep explanations interesting and clear.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-21

A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish is a wonderful guide for anyone learning Spanish. As an advanced learner, this provided excellent help for the many pitfalls in spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Best Russky textbook.......2007-01-25

If you really intend to become fluent, this is a necessary text.
Schaums Outline is great, but this gives so much profound nuance, is great concise form. Pity that I already bought the awful 'Troika.'

Academia seems to dumb down teaching languages, so student must pay for more courses. Why else would academe push such trash, as Troika?

Book Description

In addition to vocabulary that permits effective communication about everyday topics, students will find this guide provides, in extensive footnotes, the most common ways of saying things. It also tells readers the appropriate word to choose in different Spanish-speaking countries! This book emphasizes fine distinctions between synonyms, too. An extensive glossary of the key words introduced and a special listing of foods help make this study guide an indispensable reference tool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Material .......2006-11-13

The content and structure of the each lesson presented in this book are superb. Answers to all exercises are also presented at the back of the book and this is excellent for students and independent learners who desire to test their understanding of the the materials presented upon completion of the excercises. This book is just great both learning and revision whether you are in school or just an independent learner.

It not just a list of words, the book provides the context within which the words are used, present them in a way that enhances memorization and correct usage of the various words, provides information on word usage to convey similiar ideas in different parts of the spanish speaking world (constant reminder that there are some differences in in common words usage in some Latin American countries and Spain. The listing of the vocabulary is given at the ends of each excercise.

This book is just excellent and a must have for spanish students!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excelente- me parece muy bueno para los estudiantes.......2003-03-03

This is a wonderful workbook for Intermediate level Spanish students who wish to instantly build their vocabulary. The learning approach is thematic, meaning each chapter focuses on vocabulary pertinent to a theme such as: At the airport (En el aeropuerto), On the airplane (En el avión) or At the train station (En la estación de ferrocarril) to name a few. The book provides ample practice exercises, with an answer key at the back of the book and what I found really valuable was each chapter has a mini paragraph about the theme in question that incorporates the vocabulary taught in the lesson. The workbook will definitely help the student to expand his/ her vocabulary because the chapters encompass everyday themes thus detailing everyday vocabulary. I feel it's more for an Intermediate level student because one would have to have a solid base to benefit from the new material presented in the chapters without feeling frustrated and also have beyond beginner reading and comprehension skills. This is a good supplementary study aid to classroom lessons or independent study.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible resource for studying Spanish.......2001-09-27

I had 4 years of high school Spanish back in the 1970's, and I recently made the decision to brush up on what I have learned in an effort to further my studies, with the goal of becomming fluent.

I have examined a number of resources in order to determine the most efficient and logical way to build a vocabulary. None of these has come close to Shaum's Outline of Spanish Vocabulary.

The book is divided into chapters that provide vocabulary for everyday usage, as well as in what appropriate context to use each word.

If you are serious about learning Spanish, and are highly self-motivated, this book will put you well on your way to mastering this lovely language. Thanks to this book, and Schaums Outline of Spanish Grammar, I fully expect to be at an intemediate level in Spanish within six months.

A must have whether you are studying independently, or as part of a class.

4 out of 5 stars Very good and educational.......2007-04-18

This is a very good book. We used it in our large organization during our Spanish classes and the book was well received.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic Spanish book.......2006-03-27

This books is a good book, but it's not a great book. The way the author chose to organize the book doesn't make sense. Some basic things that we should learn first are left until later, such as family and the names of each family member (ie. madre, padre, nino, nina, hermano, etc.). The book also has all these exercises that asks us questions and asks us to ask questions, but didn't really teach us how to ask questions. We doesn't get a formal introduction on how to use words like "Quien", "Donde", "Que", etc.

Positives of this book include: Vocabulary that is used in each chapter is usually listed in the beginning of each chapter, good and clear explanations of the grammar it does cover, and lots of exercises for practical practice.

Another quirk of this book is that it's written as if someone who's Espanol (Spain-ish) wrote it for an audience dealing with Mexicans. So, it would use vocabulary and tell us "cultural notes" that are not how Mexicans speak or write. My Spanish teacher has to tell us from time to time that certain vocabulary words are not used in Mexico and will give us the words that are used regularly. I was especially puzzled when the author put in a food menu with all the prices, dollars and cents, separated by a comma instead of a period.

Outside of a few quirks, the clarity and ease of understanding make this a good book for those learning Spanish for the first time or want a review if you haven't taken Spanish in a while. I would recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Continuing Spanish Education.......2006-03-23

This book is very easy to work with and gives the reader the opportunity to pace themselves at their Spanish study. Exercises are thourough and answers are provied in the back of the book for those studying at home or for lesiure.

I only wish I had been able to acquire the most recent edition of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream.......2005-11-30

I got this book as part of an adult education course I was teaching at a community college and, after having studied Spanish for years, this is the best text I have seen... period. It has all the basics covered, and covered well. It is thorough and concise. It does not go into a lot of unnecessary material, but sticks to what is necessary to communicate well. It consistently reinforces previous lessons and packs a tremendous amount of learning and exercise into a small amount of homework. The examples chosen are easily digested and make teaching wonderful. My students gave rave reviews of the material and I cannot recommmend it highly enough. As will all language texts, it is the student's responsibility to pack in the vocabulary on their own, but the base grammar is all here and extremely well presented. I would take an old edition of this book over any other new texts available. These are the best.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent place to begin.......2001-04-16

Basic Spanish Grammar is an excellent starting point for one who wants to begin learning the spanish language, or is in need of a refresher course. I recently enrolled in a conversational spanish course and this book was one of the two texts used in class.

All of the exercises contained within the book are written in a clear manner which makes them easy to understand. Basic concepts which I hadn't thought of in about 15 years since my last spanish class came back very quickly and I was able to expand upon my previous knowledge at a much quicker pace than I would have thought possible.

The vocabulary is introduced in a logical manner, with examples that show just how they would be used in everyday speech. The sections dealing with the gender of words, plural forms, and definite and indefinite articles is very helpful for one who hasn't been previously introduced to the concepts.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who wishes to learn the language. Beginning students will find the book very informative, especially when combined with the pronunciation tapes or CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Repaso.......2007-09-27

I purchased this text book for my sixth grader to use with a private Spanish teacher. It is a very comprehensive and well compiled textbook. It covers all necessary topics (grammar, reading/comprehension & writing) in a organized and easy to understand format.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning Tool.......2005-11-09

As a Spanish 2 and 3 teacher I highly reccomend this book. I use it as a reference myself because it has great explanations and the order of the grammar structures is useful. I would reccomend getting an answer key along with the book. This is a great book to refresh your memory on grammatical structures.
I am glad I bought this book!

5 out of 5 stars Un Repaso Perfecto.......2005-08-26

Repaso was used as my school textbook for higher level Spanish courses in high school. Everything is great about it. The instructions are in English which makes it even more compatable. The book is able to review old concepts, but has enough to teach the little proper things about Spanish. It is a great purchase for any student that is just learning Spanish or has been taking it for many years and needs a reference.

3 out of 5 stars No Answers Given Here.......2003-09-27

Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared.

5 out of 5 stars The most complete review around!.......2002-06-25

If you had Spanish in high school but it's been a while since you've used it,then this is the perfect book for you! It begins with the simple present tense then progresses to the more complicated preterite and subjunctive. At the end of the book you will find interesting cultural tidbits to enhance your experience of learning the Spanish language. Have fun!
