Just what I needed.......2007-09-11
I am very happy with my purchase of Spanish for Gringos with Compact Discs. I needed extra help with the, "Communicating in Spanish," class I am taking. The instructor likes to teach from this book. Having the discs help reinforce the lessons and speed the learning process. Our instructor said he would not teach the course if he couldn't use the book, Spanish for Gringos. Spanish for Gringos with Compact Discs
Spanish Made Easy.......2007-08-28
Mr. Harvey makes Spanish easy to learn by helping you to use mental pictures as well as by making his presentation upbeat. It is almost like having a personal coach to help you learn.
Spanish for Gringos.......2007-08-15
My boyfriend is Spanish and I speak mostly English. I had two years of Spanish in High School but I am 51 now. I needed a way to bring back what I had learned and learn more so I would be able to converse with his family. This book covers most of the nouns and adjectives but I found it hard to put my words into sentences so I moved on to Spanish for Gringos II. My spanish boyfriends brother found this book easier to learn English than he did the "Ingles for Latinos" because it had more English in the book. I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Spanish basics. I need more Spanish sentences on the CD and their translation. I wish there was a section on there for how to talk to your boyfriend about everyday issues and love.
Spanish for Gringos with Compact Discs.......2007-07-06
This is one of the very best in the field. I teach a more structured course in class and this book provides my students with a very good balance. The compact discs are wonderful; the Spanish is very clear and does not favor any certain local pronunciation.
Interesting, entertaining, and for beginners.......2007-05-07
Spanish for Gringos was an interesting and entertaining Book (w/CDs). I was looking for a book to help me get started on relearning Spanish. Almost 20 years have passed since I took a college Spanish class and I wanted something light and different from the usual college textbook. This book was a good choice. Be warned it is a book you will outgrow, but it is a great starter book. You will not get bogged down in grammar. You will learn quick, useful phrases. The only area I disagree with the author is that he states pronunciation is not important at all. As a speaker of Japanese as a second language, I have to disagree with that. Pronunciation is important (a good reason to get the CD version), but it should not be the primary focus on learning a language. The best way to improve your language is by jumping right in there and try to communicate with Spanish speakers as much as possible. Just keep in mind if they can't understand your pronunciation then it doesn't matter how much vocabulary you know.
Book Description
Today it's more important than ever for English-speakers to have some working knowledge of Spanish. In this book, author William Harvey shows that you learn Spanish most easily when you understand the "message"Ânot when you memorize grammar rules. This informal self-teaching course is for you if you lack the time or patience for traditional language training. You'll learn key Spanish phrases and get tips that will help you comprehend the spoken language. You'll also learn to pronounce words and phrases so that a Latin-American can understand you.

Good way to learn Beginning Spanish.......2007-03-09
I bought this book because I was taking a 10-class course in Spanish at my church. It really came in handy for lots of things I wanted to know. I also used the Larousse Student Dictionary and both of them together made it so much easier.
Easy to read and understand.......2006-04-06
I appreciated the format and that the book is easy to read and understand. It also does not try to cover too much material in one chunk, but spreads it out at a nice pace. The illustrations are also very helpful. I enjoyed that the author is encouraging the reader not to worry about grammar or being precise in their learning of the language. Especially for someone who is a bit older and does not learn as quickly as someone still in school it was an excellent introduction to learning a new language.
Teacher.......2005-10-16
I am not a big fan of this book, especially the "spanglish". This is insulting to either language. If you get the copy with the tapes and simply want to memorize words, it is probably adequate for beginners. However, my class of adults found it disjointed and difficult to string sentences together with Harvey's format. We are switching to Spanish made Simple, an older version which I introduced to them, and which they all really liked. Because it gives a good bit of phonetic pronunciation as well as starting right off with simple sentences, one can retain the meaning of the words and start "thinking" in Spanish.
Forget books and cassettes - get the video!.......2004-04-26
This video is the best way for people with no prior knowledge of spanish to learn the language! The video allows you to copy the pronunciation better by "watching" the speaker's mouth. William Harvey is the first spanish "teacher" to speak slowly and clearly enough to understand and pick up the pronunciation. The video is very entertaining to watch. After watching it four times within two weeks, most of the vocabulary was imbedded in my brain. The video teaches you enough pronunciation tips that you can continue your spanish instruction with books and cassettes more easily. Great for any age. The vocabulary is all purpose and useful.
A great start for learning basic spanish.......2004-03-03
I was very pleased with both the book and the cassettes and would strongly recommend the set to anyone wanting to learn Mexican Spanish.
Book Description

Spanish for Gringos Level Two.......2006-07-01
As the owner of Toni Roman's LearningSpanishVideoReviews web site, I am more than happy to have this opportunity to post my review of this wonderful book for learning Spanish.
Spanish Gringos Level Two is an excellent sequel to William Harvey's other book (Spanish for Gringos). Both books were not only helpful but very entertaining -- which set's Harvey's books apart from other Spanish books. The gringo characters in the cartoons were probably the most entertaining part of the book. But the useful Pronunciation tips that Harvey gives is probably the most helpful aspect of the book.
The next step from "gringos" level one.......2006-02-04
As a small business owner I desparately needed to break through to the Spanish-speaking community. I began with this level one, studied this book, then over a few more years I ended up with a BS in Spanish and fluency in the language. But when I entered the first class at the university, I was ahead of the rest of the students and stayed that way in part due to using these two books.
This is not anything like a textbook. It really is fun. And it is full of culture rich informations that ease a learner into the Spanish way of thinking and social interaction.
The illustrations are engaging and useful as well.
One recommendation I would offer is to locate the video program called "Destinos." This is a 52-episode story where a Mexican lawyer solves a mystery, by traveling all over Spain and Latin America. Of all resources available to a learner, this program is second to none.
Finally, make sure you read aloud as often as possible in the language. In the absence of actual conversation, reading aloud will develop a good accent and assist a person to "find" the right words when in actual converstation.
Despite what you see in the movies and on TV, the Hispanics in our country are generally very friendly and extremely helpful and responsive to anyone learning their language.
Like Spanish for Gringos Level One, this is a true 5 star product at Amazon, well worth your money whether used or new.
Spanish for Gringos: Level Two.......2005-05-17
Level Two is a real disappointment after using Level One. The engaging voice of the original teacher is gone and is replaced by two lesser voices. One of the voices is difficult to understand, which defeats the purpose of an audio lesson. In addition, the dreaded language lab tone is added in replace of the simple pause. Finally, the festive Latin music is gone. Overall, a disappointment and not as well done as Level One.
What happened to the tapes?.......2003-09-25
I enjoyed Spanish for Gringos Level 1 very much. The book and the cassette tapes were really great. I found level 2 in a local store and snatched it up.
The book itself is more of the same, which is great.
However, the tapes are really BAD in comparison. The original tapes were done by Bill Harvey himself.
I can identify Bill's hand in the writing of the script for the tapes, but they are performed by some elevator music DJ. This guy does not capture Bill's "life" or sense of humor. He also does not pronounce the words as distinctly as Bill does on the first set of tapes. I'm very disappointed in this aspect of the set. I miss Bill on the tapes tremendously.
Harvey's second effort at play writing.......2001-04-29
William C. Harvey satsifies our appetite for a sequel to his hit play write "Spanish for Gringos." In the sequel we see the return of many familiar faces, including several new ones, but unfortunately they appear and disappear just as fast as his previous play. My only complaints are the same as my review for his first play "Spanish for Gringos", which you can read. Harvey wrote a better play this time around with some interesting twists that will keep you guessing until it's dramatic ending. A must read for adventurous play actors/readers.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference for travel in México.......2007-01-22
I bought this book based on a suggestion in another travel book I was reading on México. This author does a great job of explaining the Spanish language, especially the specifics of Méxican Spanish. The pronunciation keys are excellent, and the subjects she chooses to discuss are useful. The author clearly knows her subject well, as I found that much of what she wrote about the language was indeed true on my trip. I thought the organization was a bit odd, but as the author states, the book isn't necessarily meant to be read from cover-to-cover. Only read (and re-read) those sections that would be more meaningful to you.
Overall, I highly recommend this book.
Spanish language, culture and slang.......2002-10-06
Spanish Lingo For The Savvy Gringo is a superbly organized and presented "do-it-yourself" guide to the Spanish language, culture and slang - not just common expressions, but also curse words, severe insults, and the Spanish equivalents of the most vicious and dirty gutter talk, as well as lighter common verbal outbursts and expressions. It is not in dictionary form, instead arranged so that slang can be looked up by subject or usage. Each Spanish slang word or phrase is presented in detail with its literal meaning, the history of its usage, its ties to a specific Spanish-speaking country, comparative definitions in English, and basically everything the studious Spanish speaker needs to know in order to better understand Spanish slang. Spanish Lingo For The Savvy Gringo is a unique and very highly recommended supplement to the Spanish-language and usage textbooks (especially for travelers and students in Spanish speaking communities and countries) that most assuredly do not teach this information!
Easy, Fun, Informative way to learn Latin American Spanish.......2001-02-06
I have purchased roughly a dozen books, several audio CD's and a few computer software programs in my burning desire to learn Latin American Spanish. This book by Elizabeth Reid is one of the easiest to read and learn from. I enjoy it so much, I bought two ... one stays on my desk at home and the other stays in my car.
This book is laid out in sections ... some of which are *On the Phone*,*Groceries*,*Courtesy and Greetings*,*The Family*,*Lodging*,*At the Restaurant* and even *At the Auto Mechanic* and *at the Bank* ...
The most outstanding thing about this book is the phonetic pronounciation ... Elizabeth Reid is rignt on the money when compared to some of the audio CD's I have ... and she preceeds the phonetics with the actual words in spanish which gives you a chance to try to pronounce it yourself first.
Here is an example from Speaking on the Telephone ...
Don't get desilusionado (day-see-loo-see-oh-NAH-doh) (dissappointed) if it is not easy. Hablar por telefono (ah-BLAR por tay-LAY-fo-no) (speaking by phone) is difficult to master in another language ... To contestar (kohn-tays-TAR) (answer) el telefono you say *Bueno* (BWAY-no) (literally *good*) in Mexico, not *Hola* (OH-la) (hello).
I recommend it highly. Nos vemos (nos VAY-mos) (I'll be seeing you) Primero Dios (pree-MAY-ro dee-OHS) (God willing)
