Book Description

To win his father's ranch, a hard-living cowboy settles down and takes a wife -- another man's wife!

The youngest McKettrick brother, Jeb, is the wild one who never could stay out of trouble. And trouble is what he gets when he proposes to Chloe Wakefield. No sooner had he and the pretty schoolteacher tied the knot than Jeb discovers she's already married! After a major dustup with Chloe in a Tombstone barroom, an irate Jeb hightails it back to the Triple M Ranch, certain that his chances of winning the spread in a marriage race with his brothers are dashed.

Now Chloe has come to Indian Rock, hoping to find her beloved uncle John and a much-needed teaching post. But when she unexpectedly crosses paths with Jeb, her rage -- and passion -- flare even stronger than back in Tombstone. Chloe never intended to mislead Jeb about her previous marriage to a scoundrel of a man. But when she finds out Jeb needs a bride and a baby in order to inherit the Triple M, she is livid.

Learning to trust will be the hardest part of this mixed-up marriage -- until a stagecoach robbery and the return of a dangerous stranger prove to Jeb and Chloe that they need each other to love and honor as long as they both shall live.

Book Description

One ranch. Three sons. Only one will inherit...and on one condition.

Tired of waiting for his sons to settle down, Arizona-territory rancher Angus McKettrick announces a competition: the first son to marry and produce a grandchild will inherit Triple M ranch. Now, three distinctly different, equally determined cowboys are searching high and low for brides.

If Emmeline Harding knows one thing, it's that she can't hold her liquor. And though she's not sure how she came to wake up next to a stack of gold coins in a brothel, she fears the worst. Fleeing town as a mail-order bride, she wonders: how will she ever confess her past to her handsome new husband?

Freedom-loving Rafe McKettrick is a man of strong beliefs and stronger passions and he'll do anything to win the Triple M -- even marry a stranger. To his surprise, Emmeline's charms beguile him even as the secrets he senses she's hiding ignite jealousy and suspicion. But when a visitor from the past enters the high country, the newlyweds have no choice but to give up on a marriage in name only and seek a union that satisfies them body and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Could not put it down.......2007-10-16

I loved this book, I could not put it down. The McKettrick brothers are great. This is a true western romance from the 1880's with family, hardship and true love. I could not wait to read the Shot Gun Bride and Secondhand Bride. Linda Lael Miller is at the top of my favorite authors list. Can't wait to read more from the McKettrick series.

3 out of 5 stars Okay read.......2007-06-14

Some fun characters and situations and if you like historical romance, without a lot of shock or suprises, then this would be a good bet for you. Rather predictable, but humorous and comfortable.

5 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST, REFRESHING! .......2007-05-16

It has been a long time since I have read such a fun, and interesting romance novel!!!!! I felt like this broke the mold of your normal average historical romance. Fast paced, Interesting story, one of the few that didn't bore me with sub-story lines and forced mystery. The only mystery here? "are these two going to actually make it?" Most books of this catagory are very predictable, always leading up to a big climax that falls short of really surprising anyone. THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT WAY! I rushed out and got the second in the series ( SHOT GUN BRIDE) and I'm sad to say... it was SOOOOOOO boring I had to force myself to stay with it.. I am about to read the third and I AM HOPING that MILLER gets back on track! Sometimes I feel like her books are rushed and thrown together, not very well thought out... a result of pumping out too many novels! BUT PLEASE READ THIS ONE IT IS A WONDERFUL ESCAPE !!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-02-20

This book was very readable and interesting. It is fun to read a trilogy
because you know the characters and feel acquainted with them.

One special lady will help this cowboy lawman win his father's ranch -- and steal his heart in the bargain....

Kade McKettrick's got five mail-order brides-to-be camped out at the local hotel, all more than eager to provide him with the heir that will win him the Triple M ranch. But Kade, the newly appointed marshal, has his hands full with a troublesome outlaw gang. Why, then, is he so easily distracted by pretty "Sister Mandy" -- who most assuredly is not the nun she claims to be?

On the run from her outlaw stepfather, Mandy Sperrin hides beneath her solemn disguise, and vows to keep her wild, passionate nature from the respectable citizens of Indian Rock. Yet when the handsome marshal makes it clear that he wants her, Mandy gives in to her heated desires....

Despite the secrets that may lure them both perilously close to danger, Kade knows that proposing marriage may be the only way to keep this spirited woman by his side. But are her ties to a shadowed past more threatening -- and closer -- than Kade knows? His strong, sensual embrace may charm Mandy's wild heart -- but will she surrender to a lifetime of his deep and powerful love?

I've read other books by Ms. Miller (Corbin's Fancy & Yankee Wife) and I smiled & laughed throughout the books thoroughly enjoying the interaction between the two main characters, but not this time. I'm disappointed with this book & hoping Secondhand Bride & McKettrick's Choice will be better since I've already purchased them.

1 out of 5 stars JUST HORRIBLE!.......2007-05-16

I have read more romance novels that I can count and I think this was the VERY worst. I had to force myself to finish it. There is no real love story. The plot is unbelievable and lacks depth. This was the first novel I have read where I didn't like the female lead. YIKES! MAIN problem I had with this book, Kade was thoughtful, caring, sweet, mild mannered, a book worm actually, the peace maker of the family in the first book HIGH COUNRTY BRIDE, In this book he is a marshal, pig headed, rude, thoughtless and childish! BIG ERROR on the Auther's part!
I am going to read the 3rd in this series on the hope that Miller gets her act together!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2006-08-23

I really enjoyed this book as much as the first. The one thing I really did like about this series is that you still read about the whole family. Alot of the series books don't include anyone from the first and I liked that these ones do.

1 out of 5 stars Shotgun bride.......2004-12-17

This story lacks the romance its back cover promises. Yes there are wedding bells but what a disappointment to learn more about the family verses the relationship between the two main characters.

Whether you want toned arms for your sleeveless gown or flat abs for your honeymoon bikini, certified trainer Sue Fleming can help you get in better shape for your wedding, even if you have only six months. This slim (106-page) book presents a six-month strength-training daily workout guide with cardio recommendations and a "crash program" if there's only 12 weeks before the wedding. The strength-training exercises are basic, beginning workouts using dumbbells, stability ball, step, and ankle weights, all clearly explained and illustrated.

The cardio recommendations are very general--for instance, 75 minutes per week for weeks five and six, doing one or two activities that raise your heart rate for most of your workout, which should last at least 25 minutes. Sadly, Fleming runs through just a few ways (walking, running, and biking) to get aerobic exercise, but doesn't explore the huge array of cardio options or give much detail on this essential fitness component. Recommended for beginning exercisers who are committed to following a regular program and need specific strength-training exercises. --Joan Price

3 out of 5 stars Okay Book.......2007-08-23

This book would be great if the pictures of the exercises were next to each workout. When you go to the weekly workout, you have to flip to each exercise to see what it is. Since there are 10-12 different exercises to do in a day and so many different types of exercises, it makes it kind of a pain.

Other than that, it has some good tips.

5 out of 5 stars YAY!.......2007-07-19

Well I ordered 3 workout books all at once, I was going off of reviews and what my ultimate goals were. I tried Hugo Rivera's Women's body building, read through, then I read this one, and OMG hands down this one had all the advice, in a very very easy to read manner, great descriptions of what to do and a workout plan. I'm not getting married, at least not that I know of, but I did want to tone up and get in shape, and I think with this book it will be a breeze. I wanted something I could do at home or in a gym. So thank you Sue, I can't wait to start!!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for brides!.......2007-03-23

This book is perfect for all types of brides. The workouts focus on the major problem areas that brides are concerned about: arms, butt and abs, among others. If you follow the program, you will definitely get the results you want to look good in your wedding gown.

5 out of 5 stars Buff Brides: an AWESOME workout that works!.......2006-09-30

I have been using the Buff Brides 24-week workout program (there's a 12-week program, too) for 5 weeks now and I'm seeing a lot of results. I haven't changed my eating habits...too busy...but am still losing inches and toning up in places I've never toned up before. Especially my abs, butt, and arms. I highly recommend this program. I used to go to the gym, but had gotten lazy the past year or so. This program is great for beginners to those who already work out a lot, just want to work out at home. It takes very little equipment and space. It does take time. With 30 minutes of cardio added, the workout takes me a little over an hour and a half, 3 days a week. It moves to 4 days a week of strength training as you get closer to the 12-week mark. It's really motivating and I plan on looking great for my wedding!

The Princess Bride is a true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."

Goldman frames the fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story: his father, who came from Florin, abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts he cut out.

Is The Princess Bride a critique of classics like Ivanhoe and The Three Musketeers, that smother a ripping yarn under elaborate prose? A wry look at the differences between fairy tales and real life? Simply a funny, frenetic adventure? No matter how you read it, you'll put it on your "keeper" shelf. --Nona Vero

Book Description

What happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince of all time and he turns out to be...well...a lot less than the man of her dreams?

As a boy, William Goldman claims, he loved to hear his father read the "S. Morgenstern classic, The Princess Bride. But as a grown-up he discovered that the boring parts were left out of good old Dad's recitation, and only the "good parts" reached his ears.

Now Goldman does Dad one better. He's reconstructed the "Good Parts Version" to delight wise kids and wide-eyed grownups everywhere.

What's it about? Fencing. Fighting. True Love. Strong Hate. Harsh Revenge. A Few Giants. Lots of Bad Men. Lots of Good Men. Five or Six Beautiful Women. Beasties Monstrous and Gentle. Some Swell Escapes and Captures. Death, Lies, Truth, Miracles, and a Little Sex.

In short, it's about everything.

Eventually to be adapted for the silver screen, THE PRINCESS BRIDE was originally a beautifully simple, insightfully comic story of what happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince in the world--and he turnsout to be a son of a bitch. Guaranteed to entertain both young and old alike by combining scenes of rowsing fantasy with hilarious reality, THE PRINCESS BRIDE secures Goldman's place as a master storyteller.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2007-10-08

I was pleased with the quality of the binding. The map of Florin lines the inside of both the front and back covers. One thing which disappointed me was that the cool gold 'embossed' cover you see in the picture online is only printed on the dust jacket. The cover to the actual book does not look 'old-timey,' and in fact is rather plain.

If you're searching for a review of the actual content of the book, see previous reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite a satire but close.......2007-09-30

William Goldman's 'The Princess Bride' tells the story of the true love between buttercup and Westley- and all the obstacles they have to overcome: An evil prince, a giant, a master swordsman, giant rodents and even death itself.
It is a clever take on fairy tale stories. But although it is funny and plays with he conventions of folk tales in a knowing kind of way, it never descends into cynicysm and therefore remains very enjoyable.
I had seen the movie first and was surprised how closely the movie followed the book.

2 out of 5 stars The Princess Bride by William Goldman.......2007-09-26

I was very disappointed in this book. William Goldman totally ruined it for me. He opens with 31 pages of a long, boring, rambling, collection of his comments about the Princess Bride story. Additionally he gives a page of his ridiculous comments at the beginning of each chapter. He really ruined the story of the Princess Bride for me. I would never have bought this book if I had known this edition was about William Goldman and The Princess Bride is treated as a side story.

3 out of 5 stars An honest, old-fashioned adventure with a metafictional twist.......2007-09-24

The Princess Bride is an honest and old-fashioned adventure. The bride of the title is Buttercup, the most beautiful girl in the world, soon to be married to Prince Humperdinck - too bad she's in love with Westley, the farm boy. Before you reach the end, you've come to know an evil Sicilian criminal mastermind, a Spanish fencing wizard, a gentle Turkish giant and many other memorable characters.

It's not just a funny adventure, there's an additional metafictional level. As the story goes, William Goldman didn't write the book: it's an abridgement of a book written by S. Morgenstern. Every now and then Goldman pops in the story, interrupts and discusses some details of Morgenstern's work he disagrees with and has cut off. I'm fairly sure some people will dislike that, but to me, it was the thing that made Princess Bride shine.

It was good, but not spectacular - I don't quite get the amazingly good reviews at Amazon, for example. It was funny, definitely, but not hilarious. The book is oozing good one-liners, that I admit. So, if you're looking for adventure, romance and excitement, The Princess Bride is certainly a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars It was a jolly good read........2007-09-13

My first experience to the story of the Princess Bride was through the indulgence of the movie. I first saw it as a child, and I was like... this is a great movie. I still watch it today, because now I understand some things I didn't before, the more subtle humor that is carefully placed for adult ears only...

But enough of the movie. This is a book review! I decided to pick up the novel after I finally found out it was a novel. And yes, at first, I too fell to the prank of the S. Morgenstein joke. I'm so naive sometimes.

As I began reading, I couldn't help but appreciate the sarcastic and light tone of the author. The wording is humorous and free, and while it is not exactly of literary greatness, it is fun to read. I think that is the point that Goldman is trying to get across - humor. This book is simply meant to entertain, and that it does.

True, true, I am sympathetic to the fact that Buttercup is a true weakling who must be protected by her one and only Westley. I'm not exactly a feminist... but I don't exactly appreciate things like that. However, I can see the angle the author is coming from. He's writing a fantasy, a fairy tale. And let's face it, back in that age, women were not exactly treated like they are today. It all fits into context, so I am not completely angry at that fact.

I think the reason this book is so successful is because Goldman takes the cliche of the ordinary fairy tale and basically ridicules it in a way the reader can appreciate. I guess one could call this book a pun on fantasy. In doing this, Goldman has created a world in which not only those fans of humor will appreciate, but also those who are fans of the traditional fairy tale. People of all ages can appreciate the light wit that is contracted into every page of this novel, and the discrepencies from the ordinary. But people can also cherish it for the classic storyline it follows. This is truly a book for all people of every age of every time.

Book Description

In the tradition of The Birth of Venus and The Other Boleyn Girl comes a dramatic and compelling story of a princess from Naples who marries into one of the most glittering and infamous families of the Italian Renaissance Sancha of Aragon, beautiful and vivacious, arrives in Rome after marrying an heir to the Borgia dynasty. But Rome, seething with conspiracy and intrigue, is a world away from the sunlit Naples of her childhood. When she discovers her new husband in the embrace of not one, but several women, she is heartbroken. Lonely, she befriends her glamorous and tantalizing sister-in-law, Lucrezia Borgia, whose reputation as a seductress is unparalleled; among her conquests, it is rumored, is her own brother, Cesare. Her jealousy is legendary and some say she has used poison to rid herself of rivals. Gradually, the two women develop a cautious friendship, and Sancha comes to admire Lucrezia's ability to navigate the dangerous political currents. But when Sancha is seduced by none other than Cesare himself, whose sexual magnetism and cruelty have made him notorious, she realizes she has placed herself in serious danger. If her secret is discovered, it could not only destroy her, but threaten her beloved Naples. Possessed of an indomitable spirit, she must summon courage and cunning to protect her country, her family and herself.

5 out of 5 stars COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!.......2007-02-09

I LOVED this book. I read it in two sittings. If you like the works of Philippa Gregory, Karleen Koen, Sarah Dunant, Anya Seton, Susan Carroll, and Alison Weir you will enjoy this novel immensely.

4 out of 5 stars Hazards of being Royal, Oh my!.......2006-12-28

A good read, it kept me interested but I did not care for this book as much as Jeanne Kalogridis', "I, Mona Lisa".

Dysfunctional is too kind a word for the Borgia family.

4 out of 5 stars Come into the Borgia Parlor ..........2006-11-18

This is an interesting tale spun about who may have poisoned Pope Alexander VI and Cesare Borgia and why they were poisoned. I love the history and the intrigues of the period especially the intense and complex structure of the Borgia family. Cesare is darkly sensual, and deliciously evil as he manipulates his family and is consumed by his obsession with Sancha D'Aragon. Sancha is strong and determined, and the friendship she develops with Lucretia in their mutual love for Alfonso is definitely the highlight of this novel for me. Even Jofre Borgia is made interesting as we see his involvement in the Borgia's vendetta for control of 15th century Italy. Cantarella is still the poison of choice and readers should watch how this poison gets into the hands of Sancha. Historical readers will not care for the romance of the story, but the romance is crucial in driving the motive for revenge and justice in this novel as a turbulent love turns to consuming hatred because of an act of murder.

4 out of 5 stars Dark & Sensual.......2006-07-19

I'll be frank here ~~ it wasn't what I expected at all but that didn't stop me from reading. I thought it'd be similar to "The Ruby Ring" but it's nothing like that novel. This one is darker and more sensual and more troubling. I couldn't put the book down though as I wanted to see how this book ends.

This is probably the first book I've ever read on The Borgias. Like one reviewer here mentioned, they sure bring new meaning to dysfunctional family! This novel focuses on Sancha of Aragon who marries the Pope's youngest and ineffectual son, Jofre Borgia. Once she arrives in Rome with Jofre, Sancha becomes ensared with Lucrezia and her brother, Cesare, who are also Pope Alexander's children ~~ and Sancha becomes deeply ensared in the sinister web of the Borgia family. Incest, murder, jealousy, adultery, lavish gluttony, and rumors swirl around Rome and Sancha had to rely on her own cunning to remain alive and beat the Borgias at their game.

This is a dark novel ~~ very sensual and troubling. Everything that man can possibly do to his loved ones ~~ are written here. It is a fast page-turner and while disturbing, it's also fascinating. I have not heard much about the Borgias and if this historical fiction is anything to go by ~~ they are intriguing and definitely interesting. That old saying that power corrupts definitely fit this family. It is an interesting historical fiction ~~ one that won't leave my mind for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting.......2006-07-07

The history of the Borgia family is dark and intriguing, and this interpretation was true to tradition. It is an exciting read, but be warned, the sex scenes give it the feel of a romance novel at times.

3 out of 5 stars predictable read.......2007-06-09

After reading the Amish series by Beverly Lewis, I was excited to find a new series on the Amish culture. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this particular book. The story of Rachel Beachy and Silas Swartley is simplistic in its style and predictable. While the central conflict is good, the story churns slowly around its characters and seems to be a better fit for a younger reader. What is most disappointing is its ending, which centers around the death of a young family member. This turn of events is treated superficially and takes away from the emotion of how a loving family would react in such a situation.
Perhaps other books in this series are better, and I am anxious to read another to see. I would not suggest this as an introduction to the series.

5 out of 5 stars Hope Chest (Brides of Lancaster County).......2007-05-20

Wanda Brunstetter writes very much in the same style as Beverly Lewis. Both know the Amish way of life and relay that to the reader in a refreshing style.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!.......2007-08-29

We got this cookbook as a wedding gift and I have tried nearly all of the recipes in it. All are extremely delicious, east to make and impressive.
The pizza dough is easy and the thin crust is tasty; the breakfast items such as the pancakes, french toast, banana milk are great, desserts, beverages, etc. My husband is fairly picky and he has given each recipe so far his approval. Our favorites are the Roasted Chicken with Vegetables, Chicken Satay and Peanut Sauce, Pan Fried Pork Chops, Beef Burgundy, Mac and Cheese (fantastic!), Wild Mushroom Risotto, the Tuna, the Chicken Divine (crowd pleaser), even the Meatloaf! The special occasion recipes are the Prime Rib which my whole family enjoyed and the Filet Mignon - absolutely delicious. In the "Sides" chapter, if you like potatoes, try the Creamy Dreamy Mashed which are great (w/cheddar!), the Potato Pancakes, and the Killer Roasted Potatoes (which my husband always asks for). The banana bread recipe is one of the best ones I've ever tried and the Chocolate cake went over unbelievable at parties.

5 out of 5 stars mmmmmm.......2007-08-01

Everything I've made from this cookbook has been amazing! I've taken quite a few things to social gatherings and nothing but compliments :)

5 out of 5 stars Best Wedding Gift.......2007-05-18

I received this book as a wedding present three years ago and I still find myself pulling it off the shelf over all others. Although my husband and I have always enjoyed cooking together, this book makes it easier and more fun; the recipes are classic and sophisticated. We have already enjoyed several Saturday morning breaskfast and brunch recipes and the ideas for holiday menus are great. Everything has tasted wonderful so far.

5 out of 5 stars Meals with a flair that don't consume your day!.......2007-04-06

My husband bought this for me a few weeks before we got married. He knows how much I love to cook and when he saw me browsing through this in a Williams-Sonoma, he snuck back to the store later and bought it. I'm so glad he did because I absolutely love their recipes! I love to use recipes with a little flair that veer away from the typical "comfort food", but I hate how most of them call for ridiculous ingredients or require you to slave away for 4 or 5 hours! When I come home from a long day at work, that's the last thing I want to do (which is why I sometimes end up eating a bowl of Count Chocula on the couch)! Three reasons I love this cookbook above all others:
1) The directions are clear and easy, I appreciate how they include tips throughout the book on what recipes can be prepared ahead of time, and also the saucy selection of "quick meals" at the back!
2)Their recipes don't feel heavy like general American fare (not that I don't love a Large carton of hot McDonald's fries every now and then).
3)They include ingredients that are a bit more exotic, but don't require you to visit a specialty shop.

We tried their recipe for Guacamole during our Honeymoon week (our honeymoon consisted of moving into our new apartment in Chicago...not exactly Santorini island...but still fun!) and it is the best Guacamole ever created. I've been to countless restaurants of different calibres, and I promise you you won't find one that is better. I've taken it to several parties and family gatherings, and it has become the stuff of legend! It's like catnip for people. Some of my other favorite recipes are the "Goat Cheese, Sun-Dried Tomato & Pesto Torta", the "Wild Rice with Dried Cranberries, Green Onions & Pecans", "Classic Lasagna", and the "Hidden Treasure Bread Pudding" (...and I'm from the South so I KNOW bread pudding, haha).

If you like recipes with flavorful combinations that don't consume your life, BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Newlyweds.......2007-04-05

This book is wonderful. There is a wide variety of recipes from simple pasta dishes to more complicated soup recipes. They included desserts and drinks which are perfect for entertaining. This book was a gift from my shower and I love it. My husband and I working our way through each recipe-it's a great way to know all the kitchen devices we now have. I highly recommend it. I use tips from this book when shopping seasonly and in other dishes.

All of Wanda Brunstetter books are wonderful. This book was fun to read because the main character was not Amish but fell in love with an Amish man. It is about her converting to the Amish ways. It is informative and yet tells a story you can't put down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative tale.......2007-06-06

Reviewed by Linda Benninghoff for Reader Views (6/07)

If marriage meant forsaking the only way of life one had known, doing without conveniences such as electricity and modern plumbing, and even losing contact with one's parents, how many people would ever get married?

In "Plain & Fancy," when Laura, a young woman studying design in Lancaster, Pennsylvania meets Eli, a young Amish farmer, it is just such sacrifices that are being called into play. In this compelling novel by Wanda Brunstetter, love is never easy and its rewards are not always obvious.

Eli does not want to become "fancy;" he does not want to leave the Amish community where he grew up and where he worships God in the style in which he is accustomed. Laura, not particularly religious, but head-over-heels in love with Eli, must also think about giving things up.

The novel explores whether or not such a love can work. Brunstetter's characters are deftly drawn. I get a sense for Laura and Eli and their families, and the conflicts that arise between the young couple and these families. Importantly, the book delves into what happens after marriage--and this time in life is also realistically portrayed,

Brunstetter has done a marvelous job painting a picture of two lifestyles--and the difficult place where they intersect. The novel held my interest throughout. The romance was not idealized and the issues it brought up were thoroughly addressed. The Amish lifestyle is something the author has personal knowledge about and it is vividly imagined. "Plain & Fancy" is an excellent and informative tale.

4 out of 5 stars fascinating modern day courtship tale .......2007-02-27

Minneapolis resident Laura Meade uses the phone and her laptop to keep in touch with her family and friends as she attends the Lancaster School of Design in Pennsylvania. She plans to visit the Farmer's Market in Bird-in-Hand.

Eli Yoder works in Strasburg at a store that makes handcrafted Amish furniture. Tomorrow he has rented a booth at the farmer's market where he plans to sell some of the items he crafted at his home woodshop.

At the farmer's market, Eli of the People and Laura of the English meet and are immediately attracted to one another. The rare church going outsider and the member of the Amish church know they must not pursue their feelings, but neither can prevent love from springing up between them nor stop the vitreous jealousy of the acceptable Pauline Hostetler who wants Eli to court her. Either he leaves his church and face a shunning that means no longer seeing his beloved family or she must find God and give up her fancy life to become one of the Plain as his spouse.

This is a somewhat expanded reprint of the third Lancaster Brides' tale though this reviewer does not know how much it differs from the original. PLAIN & FANCY is a fascinating modern day courtship tale starring two people in love with totally opposite lifestyles and belief systems. The story line focuses on each struggling to find a way to a permanent relationship though the adjustment by Laura is depicted as complex it still seems a bit too easy. Still readers will appreciate the comparisons between a Plain Person and a Fancy person while looking forward to the expansion of the fourth story, THE HOPE CHEST.

With the 300 beautiful bouquets in this beautiful little book that are so beautifully photographed it will be hard for the bride to decide which one to choose. The photography is exquisite and shows the bouquets off to perfection giving you a brief description of how it's made and which type of dress it would be appropriate with and the scents they carry. What more could you ask for?
I would recommend this book for all brides in waiting, to help them decide what type of bouquet to choose, for their special occasion.

This is a great little book to help you get ideas on colors and different types of flowers for your wedding. It's current and gives you just enough information.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but not exciting.......2007-05-15

I bought this book when I was trying to plan my wedding, reading all the reviews I felt that it could be an excellent resource. On the good side, the pictures are really beautiful with close ups of each arrangement. It is also very well organized with each section focusing on the main colors in the bouquet. Unfortunately, I found the bouquets themselves to be completely unexciting, I got more ideas flipping through wedding magazines. There was not a single arrangment that I ended up showing my florist as an example.

This book has so many lovely, colorful photos of wedding flowers you will be spoiled for choice. I found it an excellent armchair guide to the many options out there for the bridal bouquet. Even if you have no idea where to start, this book will give you plenty of ideas for picking a stunning modern wedding bouquet.
