4 out of 5 stars This was the required text for my Access to Information course.......2007-08-11

For my Access to Information course, which is a core course in the graduate library and information science program that I am currently in, this was the required text, and I read most of the book for that class. Seeing as how I am still working on the degree, and that I used this book for a course I took during my very first semester in the program, I am probably not the best judge of the accuracy and presentation of the information. However, I do feel that I have a good understanding of reference librarianship after reading through this text---as well as the other readings that were required for the course. So I'll give the book a good rating.

Some other reviewers have criticized the book for being dry. I'll admit, they're right; but you know what, it's a textbook, so what else can we expect? It is really very unrealistic to expect to be entertained by reading a library/information science textbook. When I first opened this book to begin reading the first chapter, my eyes actually glazed over when I read the first few sentences. My first thoughts were: "Man, this is dry and wordy." But I eventually got into it. And if nothing else, it probably improved my reading comprehension skills a bit.

1 out of 5 stars Reference and Information Services: An Introduction.......2007-03-27

I used this book for a reference class in the Fall of 2006. It is completely outdated. I actually gave up reading the textbook for the class. The professor finally agreed to change the textbook for the class but a semester too late for me. So if you are looking for a good resource to assist you in giving good reference help...keep on looking!

4 out of 5 stars Dry but Informative.......2007-01-03

A lot can be said abotu Reference and Information Services. It is filled with fantastic information, not only about the various types of reference books (many of which I was unfamiliar with their usage), but also how to provide reference services to library patrons of all types. The information itself was great, the problem was the presentation. With few exceptions, the blandest language was used. Getting through a few pages was often such a chore that I could barely keep my eyes open. However, the biggest flaw was truly the repetition of "evalutation" material. Every type of reference source had a multiple page section on how to evaluate that type of source. In theory, this was a good idea. However, in practice the same thing was simply written again and again and again, with only the slightest changes (if any) for each type of reference. A great improvement to this book would be to simply make one chapter on how to evaluate reference sources. It'd end the repetition, and make the other chapters a bit more enjoyable.

Overall, it's a good text for a course on reference librianship, as long as you can get yourself to read it.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated and Outmoded in Most Respects.......2007-01-02

The instructor for my Reference course told us up front that it was difficult for him to select a textbook. He resignedly chose this one because it still contains flickers of useful information, even though many of the sources it describes are outdated or have dramatically changed their organization and format. While there are some decent sections on the reference interview, the place of reference services within the institution, and criteria for analyzing sources, the vast majority of this textbook is dedicated to describing (in laborious detail and shoddy style) specific reference sources, many of which are no longer relevant or frequently used. Because the internet was still emerging when the bulk of this book was written, its attention to online services is wholly inadequate, and it paints an antiquated view of reference. One little feature I did like were the case studies -- they provide adequate fodder for discussion and reflection. I'd imagine you'll only need to buy this book if it's required for a course. If so, make sure that you also get Introduction to Reference Work in the Digital Age by Joseph Janes. It's not perfect either, but it's *much* more useful to a 21st century librarian who wants to face reality.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Library Media Center specialists.......2006-11-05

This book gives an overview of the many types of reference materials, easily organized into chapters such as Indexes, Encyclopedias, Bibliographies, etc. Not designed for pleasure reading but more of a resource to guide selection in individual areas of references. Many resources are listed by name and described in detail. The amount of information included is comprehensive and can be a bit over-whelming at times. I would recommend this for Library Science students or professionals wishing to know more about reference materials or wishing to enhance their library's reference collection. The detailed bibliography at the end of each chapter provides supplementary resources for each topic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Reference Work, Volume I.......2007-10-11

Just when you think you know all about reference resources, you are bound to learn something new in this book. For a beginner or an experienced person if you are looking for ways to reach different references , this book is great! I think it is worth every cent I paid for it... now looking to buy the second Volume.

1 out of 5 stars Introduction to Reference Work leaves much to be desired.......2006-11-14

As one pursuing a master's degree in Library Science, I was required to buy this book for my reference course. I have found it to be poorly written and organized and of little practical use. Someone out there must be able to know enough about reference techniques to write a more coherent and interesting text on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Embarrassing.......2006-02-01

This was used as a college textbook in my class, and to be blunt, I and several other classmates were shocked at the poor quality.

Spelling mistakes, poor grammar, etc. abound. If ever a book needed a good editor, this is the one!

It escapes with 2 stars instead of 1 because the patient reader and beginner Library Science student may be able to glean some helpful advice from the text. At the very least, it seems the late William A. Katz knew a thing or two about the subject of reference work. I have to believe there are MANY better resources on this subject however. If not, then someone needs to start writing, there's money to be made!

(Review edited for spelling)

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2005-02-19

This book is terrible. I bought it for a class and by the end of the semester I was completely disgusted with it. It is full of errors: misspelled words, improper examples, inconsistencies in style and usage, and the like. It's hard to believe that this is the book's 8th edition! If you can ignore all of this then maybe you'll find some of the information useful. I'm not sure about its companion volume, I didn't bother reading it. All I know is that when I pay $120 for two thin books I expect far better quality than this.

1 out of 5 stars The Literary Equivalent of Valium.......2005-02-03

One of the dullest, driest reference books I have ever been forced to read (vols. 1 and 2). When you hear "it reads like a doctoral thesis," this is what they mean.

Poor, poor students. All that money ($140 for both volumes) for such mental torture.

      Book Description

Keep pace with the constant technological changes you face every day as a library technician

Computers in Libraries examines the impact of integrated library management systems, digital resources, and the Internet on the functions and operations of library technicians and assistants. The book provides a practical understanding of library system software, networks, online information and access, portals, open URL linking, and the fusion of digital and print collections. Each chapter opens with definitions of the most commonly used terms and closes with review questions for classroom use, making it equally valuable as a textbook and as a professional resource for updating work skills.

The roles of library technicians and assistants have changed dramatically in the past twenty years as computers have transformed every area of day-to-day library operations. And nowhere have those changes been more obvious than when dealing with online data that hasn't undergone the same quality control and selection processes traditionally used with library resources. As ordering and cataloging processes have been streamlined, and reference and research services have been turned into twenty-four hour help centers, Computers in Libraries is a practical guide to keeping pace with the changes you face—every day, in every aspect of your work.

      Computers in Libraries examines:

          Book Description

Whether used as a text for library and information science students, as a resource for professional librarians needing to access the information produced by or for the federal establishment, or as a guide for researchers, this acclaimed title is an essential resource and a valuable tool guiding readers through the vast and constantly changing terrain of government information in print and electronic forms. Morehead describes administrative machinery and information systems of the Government Printing Office (GPO); introduces general checklists, indexes, and guides to government information; describes the Congress and intrinsic sources that comprise the legislative process; and details many other government publications. Morehead provides a broad overview of public access issues, giving special attention to the impact of electronic formats (notably the Internet's World Wide Web) on the dissemination of federal government information. He then describes administrative machinery and information systems.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent way to learn about government information........1997-06-13

If you're wondering just where all the useful information is in the so-called "information explosion," this item just might be for you. Joe Morehead's book is a part of Library Unlimited's "Library and Information Science Text series" (intended as a textbook for librarians in training), but the book is an excellent resource for genealogists, business researchers, educators-anyone who wants to learn more about the vast and varied store of information the U.S. government makes available. And you don't have to be a doctoral student to use this book: Morehead writes in a clear and concise style; facsimiles of pages from various reference sources are included, so that the newcomer to a source will know what to expect.

Of especial interest to newbies and Internet veterans alike is a the first chapter, "Public Access in the Electronic Age," which covers the legal aspects of information provision as well as electronic sources of government information. The history and operation of the Government Printing Office and the Depository Library System are discussed. General reference sources, sources of legislative, executive, administrative, legal, statistical, technical, geographic information are covered in detail. One of the best texts for learning what the government publishes and where to find it.
