Not for a diversity class.......2007-09-09
This text is required reading for a master's level diversity course. I think it would be an excellent choice for an ENGLISH class, but think it is a poor choice for a diversity class. . .
Book Description
The Concise Rules of APA Style offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.
How does the Concise Rules differ from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? The Publication Manual remains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides guidance on designing research, identifying the parts of a scholarly article, understanding the process of journal publication, and submitting articles for publication. The Concise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.
In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, the Concise Rules provides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance for the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for referencing ideas and constructing error-free reference lists.
Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, the Concise Rules will travel easily from home to school to office.

Concise Rules of APA Style.......2007-10-13
This is an essential book if you're preparing papers that must follow APA style. It's official from APA, so you can count on the content. More detailed than a quick guide. The spiral binding makes it easy to use. If my 'easy way' guide doesn't have the answer, this concise guide does. Wouldn't be without it. Why didn't my uni profs tell me about this cheaper resource??? (The full-length guide costs about twice as much, if I remember correctly.)
book review.......2007-09-23
This book is a little confusing. Never arrived when ordered first. I had to reorder this item which finally arrived two months late.
Stefplans.......2007-05-12
I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.
APA guidlines review.......2007-05-11
good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.

Fast service!.......2007-09-06
I havent actually used this book yet for my class, but it arrived very quickly, and in perfect condition. It's a very cute, small book and it's a great size to fit in a purse. I'm sure that when I do actually start using this book it will be very helpful!
Hodges' Harbrace Handbook.......2002-08-11
I've been using this handbook for about 25 years, and recently realized that my edition was the 3rd, published in the 1970s! So I ordered the latest edition (14th edition), and was so pleased with my purchase. This is a handbook that lives in our office, and gets used to death (we do graphic design, copywriting, editing). Any new employee on our staff is required to at least become familiar with the table of contents (in case of emergency!), and very soon they too are heading for Harbrace's to look up something. We love it.
The Guide for American English.......2002-07-31
It never ceases to amaze me how many times some ... grammarian tries to correct my writing only to review my Harbrace College Handbook to see they're wrong and I'm right. This is the definitive guide to American English grammar. Easy to read, plenty of examples, and more importantly it even covers those gray areas of usage letting the ready know this non-standard without simply cutting you off without explanation. I have purchased the latest edition ever since I purchased my first copy as text to Advanced Composition during my undergraduate days at the University of Maryland University College. Harbrace as served me very well ever since helping me obtain a high GPA in regards to my written assignments. I have a lot of other grammar books that I look at now and then, but Harbrace remains the standard.

Absolutely Essential.......2000-10-17
This is an exemplary work. It is absolutely essential to the high school level and above as a general and specific guideline to writing. I strongly recommend this book for those interested in perfecting their grammar and writing styles.

The Best.......2006-11-10
This book has revolutionized my teaching procedures. Bean shows us how to be more effective teachers without adding to the time we spend prepping and grading. The students are more engaged and writing better essays, and I am spending the same or less time preparing and grading. There are tips on everything from in-class exercises to constructing formal writing assignments. I recommend it to anyone teaching composition or any class with a critical thinking/writing component.
Excellent practical advice for the college teacher.......2004-08-22
Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it. Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams. Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented. A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.
Epic Resource.......2002-06-20
John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses.
Bean blends relevant research and studies to explain and justify what works and what fizzles. His text offers strategies and assignments - from short, informal writings to involved research projects. His work considers learning styles - (students and instructors). The author models rich critical thinking and writing - the discourse allows learners to make their own connections and discoveries (while absorbing the valuable resources and information provided) Readers, like students engage in the journey of sense-making.
In sum, this is not just a book of potential exercies - it is a rich resource for instructors grappling with issues of assessment, critiquing, and the fear of grading overload. These topics and more provided me with some wonderful "aha" moments.
It's the "aha"s that spark my spirit of inquiry - and this is what I strive to share with students.
insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools.......1999-01-08
Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches to teaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects. Anyone who values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will find good value in Bean's text.

Newly revised to conform with the Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian's Manual for Writers provides comprehensive, detailed, superior guidance to writers of research papers. From "Parts of the Paper" (including the niceties of copyrights and dedications) to "Sample Layouts," everything to do with format is covered. Mechanics of style (abbreviations to quotations) are reviewed, there's help on tables and illustrations, and chapters on bibliographies, parenthetical references, note taking, and citations. There are suggestions for manuscript preparation, hints on word-processing software, and formatting for research papers' more complex features. When you're up to your eyebrows in research data, it's a vast relief to have quick, accessible, reliable answers to your questions of structure, scholarly propriety, and academic style. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
For close to sixty years Kate L. Turabian's Manual for Writers has offered comprehensive and detailed guidance to authors of research papers—term papers, theses, and dissertations. Now the editors of The Chicago Manual of Style have revised Turabian's Manual to bring the details of style into conformity with the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual. This new edition of Turabian also reflects the way students work today, taking into account the role of personal computers in the preparation and presentation of their papers.
The familiar organization of this popular book remains largely unchanged. Chapter 1 describes the parts of a long formal paper. Chapters 2-5 introduce the mechanics of writing style, from abbreviations to quotations. Chapters 6 and 7 show how to prepare and refer to tables and illustrations. The section on documentation, chapters 8-12, describes two of the most commonly used systems of citation; these chapters provide many examples including guidance on how to cite electronic documents. Chapter 13, on manuscript preparation, shows how to take advantage of word processing software to present the elements of a paper clearly and effectively. Chapter 14 offers more than two dozen sample pages illustrating ways of formatting some of the complex features found in many research papers.
Authoritative, comprehensive, easy to use, and filled with good sense, this new edition will be the standard for yet another generation of students and their teachers.
Kate Turabian (1893-1987) was dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1958. This manual and her Student's Guide for Writing College Papers made her name so well known that she has become "part of the folklore of American higher education" (Quill and Scroll).
Customer Reviews:
nice, but there are better.......2007-06-25
While excellent in its own right, the 15th Edition Chicago Manual contains all this work's information and then some. Indeed, the Chicago Manual is more extensive, detailed, and useful in general. Don't bother with this one if you have any heavy writing to do.
Kate Turabian Book for Writers.......2007-05-12
The book was recommended by a professor at my university. I found it to be a nice addition to my collection of background for doctoral style writing. It is in a nice format like an index or outline and easy to follow as a reference when writing.
A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations.......2007-02-22
Very helpful, clear, concise, and easy to use.
Commendable Book for Research Writers.......2007-01-24
I have used this book in my project and dissertation research as well as writing papers and the book met all my needs. I found the book to contain detailed guidelines that facilitated my writing exercises, including paper layouts, formatting, citing references, manuscript preparation, advice on word-processing software, among several other tips and hints. The book is suitable for those undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate research studies or anyone wishing to produce a high quality piece of writing.
Although there is room for updating the book to meet the latest technological developments, this does not detract from the fact that this is one of the best books around on guidance on writing papers, theses and dissertations. The book is highly recommended for those writing academic or professional papers and projects, including publishing articles in journals and periodicals.
necessary item.......2006-11-14
This book was suggested by name for two of my college courses. It takes some of the fear out of turning in a paper that requires notation. It should be an item of reference on any student's shelf.

Customer Reviews:
Superb organization awful content.......2006-04-22
The range of story and poetry selections is so limited, the materials bore students to death. The issues the texts are obsessed with--morbid existential guilt, death of a spouse or a parent ala Joyce, O'Connor, Cather, etc.,--no longer have the spell-binding effect they once had on the adult sensibility. We now live in an age where more dramatic problems occur. There has got to be some good literature that covers issues of our day, such as mass murder, rape, school-shootings, hysteria, incest, money problems, weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, religious intolerance, etc. This textbook is totally out of touch with the current realities of our lives in the 21st century.
Ideal Textbook for Introduction to Literature.......2000-11-10
I chose to use McMahan's text because it saves me time as an instructor of English. Composition comprises the most significant portion of a student's grade in a college literature class, and this text teaches students how to write an essay about literature from the beginning of the process to the end. I also like the bonus of a novella, The Awakening, which is often taught at the intro. level but under separate cover. Such a deal.

A shocker!.......2002-02-25
The Presence of Others : Voices and Images That Call for Response
by Andrea A. Lunsford (Editor), John J. Ruszkiewicz was use in my freshman English course. In the beginning I was not too enthusiastic about the book. It took some time to get used to. Now it has become part of my growing home library. It has great essays ranging from John Henry Newman to Bell Hooks. I love the diversity.Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz did a great job putting this book together. There are subjects that everyone can relate to. Since using the book in my English class I have become a both critical reader and thinker that John Henry Newman had a vision of.
The Prescence of Others.......2000-09-14
This book gave me a new insight into the thoughts and ideas of many of the great thinkers of my time. It let me read captivating speeches which contained the same words that once rallied thousands to march in protest, the same words that showed hundreds what their real drive in life should be, and it also showed me that their are more views to life than just my one.
Book Description
At a time when so many lament the decline of writing skills among Americans, They Say/I Say teaches the core moves of effective argumentative writing. Suggesting that there are certain moves that experienced writers use instinctively, and that the moves can be learned, this book offers a number of imaginative templates for doing so. Praised for "demystifying the tricks of the writer's trade," They Say/I Say grows from Gerald Graff's award-winning Clueless in Academe.

Good if you are new to grad school.......2007-09-27
If you are new to grad school or writing; this is a good book for you. If you have been in grad school for a while, then it is a waste of time.
Become A Credible Writer.......2007-09-13
This book is valuable for writers who are not yet experienced with writing extensive research papers or entering ongoing debates that demand a summarization of previous arguments. Though much of this book is filled with writing templates which may or may not help writers of nonfiction, they are a good starting point to open up discussions on important issues. Learn how to summarize what someone else has said, or how to give an unbiased overview of past arguments. I'd say this book is essential for high school level writers, or even young college students, but not for creative writers whatsoever.
nifty book.......2007-08-25
This nifty little book is a great tool for teaching composition to students who struggle with writing. The explanations and sentence templates clarify the structure of academic argument essays, and give students a foothold in writing. The compact size is a plus. I've recommended it to other teachers in my "Teaching Writing to Students with Learning Disabilities/ADHD" courses and workshops.
Great for Graduate Level Work.......2007-08-09
After struggling a whole semester in my graduate program on my writing, I obtained a copy of this book and realized that I did not fully understand the academic writing. I didn't know that academic writing was about persuasive writing.
Since reading the book, my writing, my thinking and even how I articulate my thoughts have improved exponentially. Not only have I suggested it to my colleagues, who also love it, I will be recommending it to new graduate students. It's an indispensible resource that I plan to read again and use as a constant resource for writing my dissertation.
This will change my teaching.......2007-07-06
This engaging book will help me to help my students improve their writing. I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to trying it out in the fall.
