How to Use This Book: An Excerpt

When the first issue of Martha Stewart Living was published in 1990, I could not have begun to anticipate how wide-ranging our readers' homekeeping concerns would be. Since then, we have discovered new solutions to age-old problems, brought in experts to advise us on very specific questions about very specific?c concerns, and experimented with all the new (and not so new) home-care products. Over the years, I've brought these lessons home with me, too, which has made me more organized and made my homes better cared for and maintained.

Households are busy places, works in progress where there is always something needing immediate attention and always something more that can be done. With that in mind, I have organized this book to address the tasks at hand and also to address the "more that can be done" for when you have the time and the inclination go beyond the essentials.

It starts with the big picture--an examination of every room and everything you will find within each. The eleven chapters in the "Room by Room" section take you on a tour through the house, focusing on the surfaces and furnishings you might find in any room, and offering strategies for their care and maintenance. Starting with the kitchen, the central staging area in any home, these chapters open with practical space-planning advice, followed by the golden rules of organizing. This information is intended to help contain your belongings and make each room clutter-free and functional. Relevant homekeeping concerns particular to each room are explored in depth--so stain-removal basics appear in "Laundry Room," the best way to clean grout in "Bathroom," and easy sewing repairs in "Utility Spaces." The equipment essential to each room is also addressed, so if you are considering what kind of bathtub to install during a bathroom renovation or whether a gas or electric range would best suit your style of cooking, you will have the information necessary to make such an investment with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - But Amazon Sells Low-End Editions.......2007-09-07

The book is fantastic, I give it for housewarming gifts and use it myself for info on how to clean and take care of all kinds of things in my home. BUT - This is the second time I've had an issue with Amazon's books. Yes, it was a little bit less expensive than the other online booksellers, but it is a lower-end version of the book. The little fabric bookmark is not on this copy and the dust jacket is made of cheap clear plastic. I will not buy any more books from Amazon unless they are soft covers and I don't care what they look like. The other book I purchased from this site was missing the dust jacket completely and they never figured out how to order one for me You get what you pay for I suppose. Disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Protect Your Investments.......2007-08-20

There are many hidden costs to owning your home and preserving its value. Proper maintenance and care is key to protecting this investment. This book is the ultimate guide in caring for every aspect of your home from room to room. Detailed instructions on routine cleaning, periodic maintenance to providing comfort and saftey are included in typical Martha fashion of simple articulation and common sense logic. Easy to read, easy to find information. This really is not a handbook however, it is more encyclopedic in portion and size. Worth having in every home. Also makes a nice gift for new home owners.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of useful information.......2007-08-20

I refer to this book often for ideas on how to take care of my home. We use it to settle a lot of disputes in our house. If my husband and I argue on how to do something in the house, we can refer to this. A few examples would be: how much laudry detergent to use, how long to run the washer, how to do dishes, how to keep floors clean & the frequency that things need to be washed/cleaned. It gives lists on what chores to do and when & how to do many other things. It's like a bible of housekeeping.

I enjoy it. It motivates you to be a little less domestically challenged & to take care of your home.

5 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart's homekeeping handbook.......2007-08-17

An excellent resource to have on hand. I wish I had it twenty years ago. A definite good gift for newly weds of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-08-15

This book is virtually an encyclopedia of how to keep a home.
Martha is the Mother I always wished I had! I have no more lingering homekeeping questions on what to do, or how to do it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great reference work for the professional maintenance engineer.......2006-07-18

This book contains over 1500 pages of figures and often dense text. It is the only book of its kind that I know of written clearly for the degreed maintenance and facilities engineer. This book is an edited work by several dozen authors who are all leading maintenance practitioners and experts in their field. The book covers both management and technical issues associated with the maintenance of the modern physical plant.

In reference to management issues, the chapter entitled "Operating Policies of Effective Maintenance" successfully deals with the strategic decisions that Maintenance managers must make, including issues such as whether or not to outsource, shift coverage, whether to decentralize or centralize maintenance, and the use of standard practice sheets and work instructions. The chapter on "Operating Practices to reduce Maintenance Work" provides a basic yet well-formulated introduction to concepts of predictive and preventive maintenance. There is fairly comprehensive coverage of how best to provide incentive payments for maintenance workers, which may or may not be applicable in certain industrial situations.

The Chapters "An Introduction to the Computer in Maintenance" and "Computerized Planning and Scheduling" run the risk of being out of date before the book has long been published. However, the principles that these chapters cover remain somewhat timeless, and also provide a useful starting point for those wishing to understand more about these aspects. Newer younger grads in the field will probably already know this material. The Chapters entitled "Maintenance Stores and Inventory Control" and "Maintenance Storerooms" are very well written. They are particularly valuable since this topic gets relatively little attention from maintenance professionals, and these chapters show their importance.

The chapter entitled "Work Measurement" should give even experienced planners new ways to look at how they estimate job durations, and the chapter entitled "Work Simplification" introduces standard industrial engineering techniques to maintenance personnel, who often are industrial engineers by training, but sometimes are not. The tools discussed include charting tools and techniques that assist planners in identifying ways to make repair tasks quicker and simpler. Planners will also benefit from reading the chapter "Estimating Repair and Maintenance Costs".

The chapters on the technical aspects of maintenance are also well-written, and could be useful both as a reminder for engineers about some fundamental concepts, as well as providing useful information for craftspeople to assist with troubleshooting and ensuring that sound maintenance quality standards are implemented. There is also a very useful introduction to the three main predictive maintenance technologies - vibration analysis, oil analysis and thermography. These sections would equip anyone with a mechanical engineering background to be able to know what questions to ask of experts in these fields.

There is a small section entitled "Sanitation and Housekeeping" that may not be relevant to maintenance engineers or tradespeople, but it is included in keeping with the book's high standard of completeness.

There are a few areas of maintenance engineering that are not covered in this book. In particular, reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and its derivatives are not covered. Reliability modeling techniques such as Weibull Analysis and Root Cause Analysis get mentioned in one brief paragraph in the chapter on vibration analysis, which is a rather odd place for the subject. With all of the recent emphasis on Six Sigma, maybe the thinking was that this would better be handled on a book on that subject. Among the technical sections, there are some fairly common equipment types that are not covered. For example, there is no coverage of the maintenance of hydraulic systems, boilers, PLC's, or distributed control systems.

In spite of these few shortcomings, this is certainly an excellent reference for the maintenance engineer for most facets of the job including planning, financial, organizational, and hands-on technical aspects. The table of contents is as follows:

      Book Description

Many readers already regard the Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook as the chief authority for establishing effective maintenance planning and scheduling in the real world. The second edition adds new sections and further develops many existing discussions to make the handbook more comprehensive and helpful. In addition to practical observations and tips on such topics as creating a weekly schedule, staging parts and tools, and daily scheduling, this second edition features a greatly expanded CMMS appendix which includes discussion of critical cautions for implementation, patches, major upgrades, testing, training, and interfaces with other company software. Readers will also find a timely appendix devoted to judging the potential benefits and risks of outsourcing plant work. A new appendix provides guidance on the "people side" of maintenance planning and work execution. The second edition also has added a detailed aids and barriers analysis that improves the appendix on setting up a planning group. The new edition also features "cause maps" illustrating problems with a priority systems and schedule compliance. These improvements and more continue to make the Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook a maintenance classic.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most practical book I have ever read .......2004-10-25

The tips and guidelines of this book helped me not only to build a maintenance management system [aluminum rolling mills] from scratch but also to create a CMMS program (database) from where I could print many reports as well as work orders. Athough I have read many many books on maintenance and reliability topics, this particular book helped me to understand and apply the proposed theories focusing on details.

5 out of 5 stars Doc the Guru, its not AMPSB.......2002-04-18

This is not AMPSB (another maintenace planning and scheduling book), when you read this book you can actually feel that you are in the real working world.Doc does not talk concepts he tells what happens in real Maintenance World and how to go to World Class Maintenance Management practices using 6 planning and 6 scheduling principals. I like the way Doc takes a reader through planning and scheduling of maintenance work by examples which makes this book different from other books, you cant find other texts doing this unless you are in the classroom. The Appendix about Work Order System is a million bonus for those who want to develop their SoP (Standart Operation Procedure). I will stick to this book as a reference in the process of developing a World-Class Maintenance Organization.I will also recommend this book to Maintenance Project Managers and Maintenance Management Consultants of any system (take it from me I am in aviation and I am applying his concepts). If you want to start or improve your Maintenance Planning Department START BY READING THIS BOOK.Good job Doc. If the was a 10 star I would have given it a 10star, this is a unique book I have ever read and practical to use.(...)

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for all Maintenance Program Designers.......2002-02-17

Doc Palmer has provided a great tool for all Maintenance Program Designers and others to use. Mr. Palmer has provided good details and examples in the book while also making it as enjoyable to read as it is informative. I highly recommend this book to all who are step one and beyond in Maintenance Management and Development. One of the hardest espects of starting a new maintenance program for a company is often getting management to except the required changes. The Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook helps by often having a ready example or referance to provide a second means to demonstrate to the client the how, why and effect on his bottom line. This reason alone is worth the cost of this book and then some.
Doc Palmer also drives home the truth about CMMS; when to invest and when to wait. This for me is very important for my specialty is designing Preventative Maintenance Operational Programs for the client. Once I have done so the client can invest in the exact CMM software they require. Unfortunatly all too often clients approach this backwards; they buy the program first and then hope someone like myself can make their operation work with the CMM. They end up spending thousands and a lot of their valued time for little reward at the end. If your company is in this position or about to be read this book before you do anything else.

5 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Find Objection.......2002-01-10

Hand-on experience is crucial for performing successfull maintenance. It can be only your personal experience or, if you are dedicated to continual learning, you can "borrow" some of hard-to-gain experience from top-class professionals.
Every sentence in this book is illustrated with very concrete examples from real life, and that makes it invaluable. Author has comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of maintenance, and that is visible on any page of this book, so although it is thematically concentrated on planning and scheduling, it can be used by anyone involved in structure of companies' maintenance organisation.
From explaning overall corporate strategy regarding maintenance to decribing every particular day-to-day task of maintenance planner and scheduler, this book guides you through the whole process, in which planning and scheduling are vital subprocesses to bring anything else to life.
Although the book is oriented to explain manual documentation system, you can easily bring described principles in very extensive use of CMMS practice. You can only benefit from broader view that can only tear you off "computer-will-solve-everything" dreams.
      Great!

4 out of 5 stars Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook.......2001-09-27

This book provides details not found in others I have read. There is a great section on Wrench Time. I have presented 4 Stars only because I feel that this is not necessarily a book for beginners. A good basic knowledge is needed to interrupt processes and terminology difference between your facility and the book text. The examples presented in the book are designed as for a manual application so you must be able to mentally translate them into the application of your CMMS.

I highly recommend this book, more over, reguardless of current Planning/Scheduling level every Planner and Maintenance Professional should have a copy for quick review. It is our company's point of reference for providing knowledge as we build towards World-Class Planning/Scheduling.

2 out of 5 stars Better than nothing..........2006-05-09

I was hoping that this book would give me a solid introduction to home improvement but it really didn't deliver. The information presented tended to be either too brief or assumed a lot of proir knowledge, which is inappropriate in a book with "for Dummies!" in the title. There were some good tips but I never had enough info to embark on a project with only this book as a reference. One exception was the info on painting, which was helpful and detailed. Also, a lot of the material seemed a little dated - there was tons of info about wallpapering and installing laminate countertops (I think these options are not as popular as they once were) but not much on installing granite counters or laminate flooring. So, in short, having this book is better than nothing but if you really want to be well versed in home improvement, look elsewhere.

I was expecting this book to "speak" to dummies. But unfortunately through out the book they kept bringing up stuff that had not been explained before. There is too much verbage and not enough step by steps or pictures. As for humor, all you have are the cartoons.

The Black and decker book starts from the basics, shows each and every tool that is required to do the job, shows plenty of pictures that give the best idea as to what is involved and what is requried.

        Book Description

From a leading conservation organization—the trail building and maintenance "bible," now updated and expanded to meet new techniques and new realities of the 21st century.

·New chapters on arid lands restoration and involving conservation volunteers
·The latest in effective management of work crews of all ages
·How to build "sustainable" trails to fit dwindling park maintenance budgets
·For weekend volunteers, youth group leaders, outing club members, and anyone involved in caring for the land

For half a century, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) has inspired people of all ages to take part in projects that enhance the environment. In settings from city parks to backcountry wilderness, the practical skills presented in its pioneering handbook have been tested in the field by volunteer and professional work crews throughout the nation. Their input enriches every chapter of the new edition with fresh approaches, new ideas, and modern applications of traditional skills.

In addition to conservation crew leadership and risk management, Lightly on the Land presents the nuts and bolts of trail construction and maintenance; building with rock; felling and buckling; building with timber; bridge construction; and environmental restoration. It gets down and dirty with tools, knots, and rigging. Throughout, it teaches how to build pathways and reshape existing routes to require a minimum of attention over the years—essential in this era of shrinking park budgets.

5 out of 5 stars Great first book on trail building.......2007-05-10

This is a great first book for anyone to learn about trail building/maintenance. It is general enough to give a good understanding of various topics, gives enough detail to start out but I am waiting to purchase the 2 IMBA books before I put any tool into soil, because I want to build trails specifically for mountain bikes. You can only buy those on their site, and they're about twice the price, but from what I hear they are very detailed. But I still would recommend this book as a first book as it is an easy read.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Practical Book.......2007-01-10

This is a basic book of American trail building practice - some of which are different from what we do in New Zealand - and from which we can learn.
The local Department of Conservation Officer (the Deprtment of Consrvation inNew Zealand is responsible for maintaining the environment in about a quarter of this country and providing access where desirable and required)), was sufficiently impressed that he immediatly asked me to order another copy.

4 out of 5 stars THE book for trailwork.......2000-02-29

I build mountain bike trails, and although this book mostly talks about hiking trails, the information is good for any type of trail.

I'd disagree with the section on waterbars (not that it isn't a good description of a waterbar, I just don't find they work well/need too much maintenance), but other then that have pointed out this book to a lot of budding trail designers. The drawings are clear and so is the text. The index is good for when you need it as reference.

I look forward to wearing out this book and having to purchase another copy.
