Instant recall Spanish vocabulary.......2006-11-11
It was ok but their insn't enough vocabulary on this cd
It works!!!! It is amazing........2006-05-20
Ok, I read the above reviews and agree with all the points made.
However, I give strong 5 stars for this product. DO NOT buy it if you know some Spanish already, DO NOT buy it if you are seeking for materials to study Spanish grammar. DO BUY IT if you want to learn 200 words in a couple of hours and remember them well for a long time. This material helps you to memorize 200 words and it does it very very well. They do not promise that they teach you grammar. They do not promise that you will start speaking Spanish right away. Memorizing words is essential task in learning any language, I would say the most tedious task and the CD helps you with it greatly.
Good method to learn, but the package falls a little short .......2005-08-27
This method, in which you visualize quirky little images to anchor your attempt to memorize, does work. It's called Mnemonics, and you can find it explained in many places on the web.
An example from this CD would be for the English word "rice", which in spanish is "arroz" (pronounced ARROS). When attempting to learn this word, you visualize arrows landing in your plate of rice. You actually take a second, provided by the narrators, to "see" this.
Sounds silly at first, but it really does help, and this CD will help you start using this technique as second nature. You can memorize anything this way and you may find yourself using it to remember other things outside of your language studies. You'll also find it explained in books on memory.
And that's why it's worth it - you will thoroughly understand how to do this - and feel comfy doing so - by the time you have done these words and will start doing it every time you have trouble retaining new vicabulary. If you have never worked this way, it will seem much more natural by the time you complete the CD.
And that's the way to evaluate this because the package itself is pretty thin. I'm going to call it 3 for the value of the method, but be a little critical in how much this package provides in actual vocabulary.
Con:
a) There are only about 200 words.
b) The words are generally too easy. The vocabulary is useful... household, days of the week, colors.... but very elementary. If you have studied even a little Spanish or been around Spanish speaking people you will find you know a lot of these words already. I found I knew 75% of the words with no practice, probably just from living in Texas and reading menus and bathroom doors in Mexican restaurants. It's really for complete beginners or at least those who have never heard of the method.
c) It's a waste of time to teach words that are almost exactly like the English in this way. An example: The word hospital in Spanish is hospital, but pronounced slightly differently. They train you to "imagine a bullfighter is hurt and must go to the hospital". Since the excercise reminds you of the English sounds rather than the slightly different Spanish sound you get nothing from it except the knowledge that the word doesn't really need translating. A considerable number of these silly words are included further diminishing the overall number of truly new and difficult words you retain. I'm dissapointed the would waste space on words like telephono, accidente, dentista and color. I bet at least 15% of the words are of this type that require pretty much no thought and are not well applied to this method. Subtract these and the other obvious words and you get only 50 or less that actually need a method like this to help you.
Pro:
a) Word list and glossary included. Not that you really need it for this tiny selection.
b) Useful self testing tracks, and a full program accompanying. You should do the self-tests. They tell you to relax, no one gets them all right, but I think many people will get them all right. Again, nice they thought to include it, but since the words are so easy not sure how crucial it is.
c) Words are grouped into categories. I contrast this to the Vocabulearn series, which I also just got, and which unrolls words randomly without grouping them by type. Not sure which is ultimately better for learning (perhaps a combination of both is) but the grouping seems to work well here and makes it easier to see where you are weak or need to go for additional work. If you wanted to pick up missed words in the Vocabulearn CDs, you'd have to just guess where they were on the CD.
d) The CD is recorded well and has tracks. It always amazes me when language CDs are recorded in huge single tracks where you can't isolate specific sections easily. This one is short, but well made. Sound is clear, and the speaking is well done. The Spanish speaking woman's voice is a little shrill, but contrasts well with the English voice.
In sum: Use it to learn the method, if you don't know it already, and don't get upset about the simplicity of this particular program. Then use the technique in conjunction with more comprehensive and useful vocabulary lists like Vocabulearn CDs or Reznick's 1001 Most Useful Spanish Words pamphlet.
Genderless Recall.......2005-05-24
I gave two stars because it has been two years since I listened to the cds and I still recall many of the hints and vocabulary I learned using the system, however, I deducted 3 stars for failing to teach whether the nouns are masculine or feminine. There is a small booklet which accompanies the cd's but it does not provide gender either. If you are studying on your own and digesting a lot of grammar through books, these cd's make a welcome change of pace and seem to cover the basics.
Good, but leaves you wanting more........2005-04-04
This is a pretty good deal: You learn Spanish words by picturing them in funny little scenarios in your head. It does work, but there are not really that many words. Also, if you plan to use it in your car, or in a situation where you can't read the words as you go, you should have a good understanding of Spanish pronunciation.
By the end, you won't be able to understand Spanish as much as have a chance of figuring out what someone is saying by cherry picking words. So don't think this at all a course to get you speaking Spanish as much as it is a course that is a primer or a supplement to your current studies.
It would be great if there were more words, but with some thought you should be able to come up some helpful memory joggers on your own.
I gave it three stars because I just don't think the length justifies the price. But, you WILL learn the words presented in about 10 seconds per word.

Honest opinion.......2007-07-06
In Instant Vocabulary, Ida Ehrlich presents a systematic method for developing a stonger vocabulary through the utilization of word-roots. While I found the structure of this book sound and accessible, the content and words that were covered within each section were either rather common or irrelevant. I would not recommend this book to someone who is attempting to strengthen their vocabulary for the GRE simply because most of the words on the GRE do not derive from the conventional roots presented in this book. However, it is affordable enough for anyone who feels they may benefit from such an approach to try it for themselves.
Instant Vocabulary.......2003-09-11
This little book is one of the best teaching aids I've ever come across and one of the best investments I've ever made in terms of lesson planning, not to mention my own knowledge. It groups the word affixes by meaning and derivation. I'm on my second copy. I used the first one until it literally fell apart in my hands.
I'm only sorry it's not available in hard cover.
Great vocabulary builder utilizing word roots.......2003-08-04
This book groups English vocabulary words in accordance with their roots. Memorizing the Latin and Greek roots worked wonders for me in my high school years. To this day I reap the benefits. Recommended!
A great little book for vocabulary boosting.......2001-07-13
This is a very handy and inexpensive way to work on vocabulary expansion using a systematic approach to recognition of word origins. The book works foward from simple prefixes "re-" to more complicated prefixed and suffixes (and "mid-fixes"), such as "-gen-" or "-cogni-". One can follow the book foward in order, or simply use it as a reference by picking up given prefixes or suffixes as an adjunct to foreign vocabulary work. I introduced one of my children to words starting with "mal-", "bene-" and "parl-" while teaching him beginning French, for example. A nice companion to Strunk and White's, Elements of Style.
Book Description
Many words in Spanish are nearly the same as their English counterparts, except for the word ending. For example, English words ending in "-ary" (such as "ordinary") usually end in "-ario" in Spanish ("ordin-ario"). This unique book teaches 24 word-ending patterns between English and Spanish and provides over 4,000 words that follow them. Perfect as a classroom supplement or for self-study, it is appropriate for all ages and levels of experience. The companion audio CD teaches pronunciation.
Also available: Instant Italian Vocabulary Builder and Instant French Vocabulary Builder.

This book is really a nice vobabulary book to read. Especially if you are interested in a deeper and more profond education. And ESPECIALLY if you are a foreign student...
EXCELLENT vocabulary builder.......2001-07-03
I own at least 12 books on vocabulary building and LOVE this book! It utilizes etymology, the study of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Once you know and understand the meaning of roots, prefixes, and suffixes, it unlocks the meaning of THOUSANDS of words, even if you've never seen or heard them before. VERY powerful vocabulary builder, in my opinion. HIGHLY recommended.
This book is kind of odd.......2000-05-19
When I was in Junior High, we had to use this book to increase our vocabularies. Only buy it if you are prepared to face up to words like Nymphomania, and Dendroid (let's just hope there aren't any dendroid nymphomaniacs out there!) Overall, it improves your vocabulary, but it is also very boring.

A Great Book that Fits in Your Pocket.......2007-04-12
I've been practicing Japanese lately with a tutor, and this book has been immensely helpful to me!
nice.......2005-03-30
nice little book.
Most phrases and words here are common and used everyday.
Extremely useful little book!.......2003-05-11
I found this book to be extremely helpful in properly pronouncing japanese words and phrases. I've purchased several books on learning to speak Japanese and find myself constantly referring to "Instant Japanese" by Boye De Mente when I'm unsure of the correct pronounciation. In addition, the size is perfect to carry around in your purse or pocket!
Highly recommended!
Get Started Quickly.......2002-06-03
This is one of the best beginning books on Japanese that I've seen. Mr. Demente's "learn 100 words" theory is fantastic. If you're going to Japan and don't intend to spend hours in serious study of Japanese but would like to communicate basic ideas, I'd recommend this book. Plus, like others noted, this book easily fits into your pocket.
Great book!.......2000-07-10
I just got back from a two-week vacation in Japan, where I used several books in an attempt to improve my miniscule knowledge of Japanese. This book was the best of a good lot; the word selection is excellent, and the book teaches sufficient grammar almost effortlessly; most important, it's small enough to finish fairly quickly. Of course, it's only a start--for a second book, I recommend "Japanese Made Easy" by Tazuko Ajiro Monane.
Even if you thoroughly learn the content of this book, though, you still want to carry around a phrase book for those (frequent) times when 100 words just isn't enough. De Mente's book will teach you enough Japanese so that you can make simple sentences without looking up every word, but you will still need words not in this book.
[Minor complaints: he spells the word "o" (pronounced "o") with the old spelling "wo" throughout the book, for no apparent reason. Also, an index would have been nice.]
In short, the book is superb for its one intended purpose, which is teaching a very basic, careful selection of Japanese--an "instant" introduction.

A "SUPERBE" INVESTMENT!.......2004-06-01
My reaction to learning 200 key words and basic phrases, in just a few weeks, was PURE amazement and delight. I listened to the CD sewing, on the train, and while playing Playstation on weekends - any spare moment I could grab. Never considered myself a 'visual' learner and was totally floored by how dead easy this was. I bought the CD just before attending a community college French 101 class, and other students were keen to get it when I told them about it. Even my teacher thought it was an intriguing way to learn quickly. Dead easy!
For example - "The French word for cabbage is choux. Imagine a cabbage growing out of your shoe". Even my apathetic spouse knows that one now. :-D
This CD will teach you the basics - not necessarily whole sentences, but enough 'survival' words and phrases to get by with necessity.
I'm an absolute convert to this learning method and am definitely going back for more. Can't recommend it enough!!
INSTANT RECALL.......2004-04-23
I THOUGHT THIS TO BE THE BEST LEARNING TOOL TO LEARN FRENCH FAST
I WAS LOOKING FOR A SECOND INSTALLMENT TO THE FIRST. IF THERE IS ONE I WOULD HAPPILY BUY ONE FOR MYSELF AND FAMILY MEMBERS. I DID INDEED GO TO PARIS AFTER USING THIS TAPE AND FOUND IT EASY TO CONVERSE WITH THE FRENCH. I URGE ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN LEARNING ENOUGH FRENCH TO TAKE A TRIP THERE TO BUY THIS PRODUCT
a heavy and unnecessary step to learn french.......2003-11-21
I'm a newbie in French, eager to learn any new french vocab, but i was quite disappointed with this CD.
As stated on the CD description, it's effective to remember to vocab, but the tutorial doesn't guide you to practice it, make it into a real sentence.
E.g. "Dress" in French is robe. the speaker asks you to imagine that someone ROBS your best dress, gives you a few second to create that image in your mind, and keep continuing to do that word by word. Sounds great? No, i don't think so.
By this approach, you will have to recall the vocab very indirectly, and it's useless for the daily conservation. You should be aware that you're going to learn 200 vocab by this approach, and you have remember an extra of 200 pictures.
Even worse, the speaker never demonstrates the pronunciation of difficult vocab by its syllables---like what it's done in pimsleur method, you'll feel disappointed too if you want to improve the prounciation with CD.
However, the only advantage is that this CD set is relatively cheap. If you simply want to learn a few french vocab to wonder your friends, this CD is a good choice.
This is cool!.......2002-03-05
I just got this thing today. I have never looked at french before in my life. yes, I knew how to say hello, yes, no, please, and thank you, but that was it. Yes, I studied some spanish before, but I can only think of about 5 words that sounded close to the spanish equivalent. I won't say that I know all 200 or so of these words already, but I know most of them. The rest of the words don't sound as "foreign" to me right now either. Like the CDs say, don't beat yourself up if you don't remeber things well the first time though. And don't cheat by looking at the words first. This was a good introduction to accent as well. The only thing I didn't like was the effeil tower motif. Everything that sounds almost the same in french as english has the tower associated with it. by the end all these words were at the tower, on top of it, or being thrown off of it. That just doesn't give me good separate images. But oh well, those are usually easy anyway because they DO sound alike. Now i need some grammer. This course is also avalible in spanish, but more, more languages I say!
