Who's Who in the Bible: An Illustrated Biographical Dictionary (Reader's Digest)
ASIN: 0785211357 |
Book Description
In today's media-driven culture, how do you introduce the Bible to people who are used to movies, comic books, and USA Today? You give them How to Get Into the Bible, a fast-paced, action-packed look at the main characters, events, and meanings of the Old and New Testament.
Using with the reader-friendly Contemporary English Version, this book makes it even easier for adults who are unfamiliar with the Bible to get into the Scriptures.
Customer Reviews:
A Great intro to the bible for 10+.......2007-03-20
I originally bought How to Get the Bible into your Life. I liked it a lot. It made the Bible seem practical in a way I didn't know it could be. This book may be a bit redundant, but well worth owning for the historical aspects. Both very well written. This book is well-researched and unbiased--when two interpretations are possible, he gives you a choice to decide which one to believe.
Fabulous Illustrations!.......2006-08-13
This is a wonderful text, incredibly useful.
However, what I most enjoy are the fantastic illustrations. So often in Christian publishing, the graphics are dull and insipid. But in this book, the artist captured period details with strong realism and fluid movement. It is obvious that he did a tremendous amount of research and I feel like my understanding of Scripture grew not only through the author's work, but also through the work of the artist.
The sequel is great, too........2003-11-15
This is a really good intro to the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Clear, simple, and biblically solid.
But I like the sequel even better because it not only gives you the short course on each book in the Bible, it helps you put it to practice.
The first book--How to Get into the Bible--is history. The second book--How to Get the Bible into My Life--is history applied to our lives today.
Both are helpful, well-written, and insightful.
Great Study Guide.......2002-01-03
How to Get Into the Bible is a wonderfully laid out book that really brings the messages of the Bible home. Each book of the Bible is reviewed. Timelines and maps of the surrounding areas, found in the first page or so of each review, help the reader keep straight complicated chronological and geographical data. Also at the end of each review is the encore section. This tells the reader where they can find similar material in other books of the Bible.
I really liked the way the book is set-up. I enjoyed the shaded boxes, which highlight famous lines and ask, "did you know" questions about each book of the Bible. The section titled, How We Got Our Bible, is helpful. That is followed by a section highlighting the main points of Bible. This can help those who may not be familiar with many Bible stories. Moreover it serves as a good overview.
This book is great because it is written for a variety of readers from different age groups. Teenagers on up could enjoy this book. You can choose to use the book as a reference book, read it as novel, or just read each review and then read the accompany book.
Very useful.......2001-02-12
This book is an excellent companion book for Bible study. It's a great startup book for someone who's new to the Bible and can also serve as a handy quick reference for someone already familiar with the material.
Each book of the Bible is addressed in terms of plot, main characters, the book's relationship to other Bible stories, and more. It's like a well fleshed out study outline in many ways. What I particularly liked is that even the very short books of the Bible are given equal treatment. You'll get ample material about 1 Peter, Micah, Obadiah, and other small books along with the big boys like Isaiah and John.
Time lines help you keep a mental picture of what's going on around the events of each book. Where multiple opinions and theories abound, the authors introduce the reader to a variety of interpretations and the merits of each.
While many of the author asides and comments may prove uncomfortably liberal for evangelicals or fundamentalists, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in digesting the Bible. It's entertaining and captivating enough to read straight through like a novel, educational enough to use as a supporting study text, and consistantly useful enough to keep it on your reference bookshelves.

Customer Reviews:
A Rich Text.......2007-09-14
I really appreciated, what was for me, a comprehensive introduction to the topic of Biblical Interpretation. This stood me in good stead for a posy graduate diploma in Biblical Studies and will be a valuable reference tool well into the future.
I'm sure there's better..........2007-07-07
I thought I wrote a review of this book already, but I'll do it again.
This is the first book on Hermeneutics I've read and I have to agree with what looks like the majority of the reviews here. It is quite wordy. I find myself skimming for the main points and some of the definitions. It's a bit too thorough, however if you wanted to look up a certain concept in interpretation... I'm sure you could find something about it in this book.
I will say there are some good "aha" personal stories, examples, and biblical misconceptions answered, but you'd have to do A LOT of reading to really benefit from and find them.
The things that are turning me off the most to this book are 1. There is certainly a kind of postmodern feel to it. There is an effort to create balance on certain views that seem to only exist inside this book. I mean that there are conclusions about Theological views that I've never heard of. The conservative skeleton backbone seems to be intact (They say there is such a thing as absolute truth, etc.), but it's as if there is a drift away from being totally consistent. There is also some apparent leaning in support of "The 2-Source Theory" or "Q (Quelle) Document."
2. I've also noticed subtle elastic expressions of the authors' views on Covenant Theology vs. Dispensationalism. They sometimes lean one way, but then make a clear statement here or there that leans the other way.
Overall, I certainly have learned things from the textbook in certian places. We just have to read and learn critically... as with everything I suppose.
Not the best..........2007-02-28
This book is very well laid out, and points out both sides of the arguments. Very good for seeing what one side says to one issue, and what the other side says to the same. However, some issues are touchy, inerrancy being one. Page 146 "the Bible is a trustworthy communication by Spirit-guided interpreters and is true in all it intends to teach." The Bible was not given to men to teach them science, but the God of Science is the God of the Bible - If the Holy Spirit is the author of the text and He errs in some matter (say, in the case of science) then God is not God. B.B. Warfield, whom they quote for the "conservative" position, is right.
While they acknowledge His place in the writing of the Bible, all I seem to read about is what the author on earth meant - which is hermeneutics. But I see precious little to help one understand the place of the Holy Spirit upon the authors, except for a bit here and a dash there. A chapter would be too much on the subject, but at least a section or a paragraph is needed. I really do wish more biblical texts were quoted to develop the arguments made by the creators of certain views, and the author himself. To its credit though, it makes wonderful use of examples from the Bible regarding Chiasm, staircase, AB-BA, etc.
I am WELL aware many interpretations exist, but this does not negate the fact that we cannot deny the singular purpose of The Scriptures as the revelation of Jesus Christ - which the Author argues. Yet, the reader feels lost on this point, and that could also be due to the fact that this book clearly needs an editor. As a humanities major, I went through line by line, and condensed almost 70-80% of the sentences. No basic appendix for terms, and a cursory index of subjects?!? - I am disappointed that Nelson would let something like that slide especially when this book is used in higher education. It is a good book. Phenomenally Well researched. Covers both sides of an issue. Pointed me, the reader, in the right direction. Great for the foundations of hermeneutics. Footnotes as far as the eye can see. Needs some improvement.
level headed reading.......2007-01-22
a good semi-technical work on biblical studies/interpretation. There are some things to disagree with of course, but for the most part it contains very helpful material.
Scholarly and well-researched, but lacking organization and conciseness.......2005-12-15
This book on the genre-based hermeunetical approach is conservative, well-researched, and very informative. However, the book suffers from what seems to be lack of editing, poor organization of sub-topics, and sheer wordiness. I would use this book as a reference for an in-depth study of a particular genre and as a gateway to other scholarly resources, but not as an intro to hermeneutics. For an intro hermeneutics book that takes a similar approach as this one, I recommend Stuart and Fee's How to Read the Bible for All its Worth.

Great reference tool!.......2002-03-10
This is a great tool to any serious or even casual student of the Bible. It is full of full-color photos of myriad items of interest, maps, charts, and historical excerpts of Biblical figures.
The contents include photos of sites in modern day Israel, photos of archaelogical sites such as digs at Ur, a reconstruction of what the Tabernacle might have looked like, a diagram of Jerusalem, and much, much more. With over 600 pages, it is a very interesting book, whether you're reading it in detail, or just thumbing through it!
pleasant balance of text, photos. maps, and bible comments........1999-05-26
this is a worthy addition to any Bible scholars library
A solid Bible reference for the casual Bible student........1999-03-05
This volume is a fine resource for the reader who wishes to delve a bit deeper into Biblical study, but feels intimidated by the commentaries published specifically for use by pastors and theologians. It's an easy read--two words one seldom associates with a reference book--beautifully illustrated, with plenty of background information to give the biblically challenged a flavor for the times in which the Bible was written. I have recommended this volume and its companion, Eerdmans Handbook to the History of Christianity, since their initial release. I continue to do so, especially with this more affordable paperback edition.

Book Description
In this introduction to the first five books of the Old Testament, Victor Hamilton moves chapter by chapter--rather than verse by verse--through the Pentateuch, examining the content, structure, and theology. Each chapter deals with a major thematic unit of the Pentateuch, and Hamilton provides useful commentary on overarching themes and connections between Old Testament texts. This second edition has been substantially revised and updated. The first edition sold over sixty thousand copies.
Customer Reviews:
Great start.......2007-08-02
Handbook on the Pentateuch,: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
This makes sense - the big picture and all of its details fit. This was my feeling as I worked my way through Hamilton's book. In fact, the discovery was not only a big relief, after scanning a number of books of its type and feeling overwhelmed and lost in issues I did not understand and never knew existed, excitement fill my heart and mind. Just enough and too much for this novice adventurer into the Old Testament.
Excellent introduction to the Pentateuch.......2007-07-01
Victor Hamilton's Handbook on the Pentateuch is a very good introduction to the Pentateuch for both undergraduates and beginning seminarians who are taking an exegesis course in Old Testament. For anyone interested in Old Testament studies it is a must. The publishing life of this text has been remarkable since it first appeared in 1982. Unlike the previous reviewer, who essentially wants a commentary on the Pentateuch, the beauty of this text is that it is not that. It is a handbook introduction - a biblical theology of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Dr. Hamilton is not writing for the academy, although academicians will find it useful. He is writing for the student and motivated layperson. Besides, Hamilton has already authored the two volume commentary on Genesis that appears in the New International Commentary on The Old Testament (NICOT) series published by Eerdmans. There, the reader will find concise exegesis in a verse-by-verse format. Handbook on The Pentateuch reflects what Dr. Hamilton has done best over the years - teach students Old Testament. Readers will find this to be an engaging text that reflects critical scholarship as well as a pastor's heart.
Fun, imformative, and erudite..........2002-11-23
Hamilton's synopsis of the Penteteuch is great for the biblical scholar at heart. Laypersons will also enjoy this book, as it flows quite well and keeps the reader intrigued. Hamilton's analysis of the hexameron (the work of the six creative periods) is especially fascinating, as he pulls parallels from mythological cosmogony to demonstrate that the biblical account of the hexameron is unique in many respects, but that the underlying motif is not new to other cultures outside of the Bible. Also, this book doesn't carry an ostentatious Evangelical flavor to it; it is very objective and can be enjoyed by those from all faiths.
The only real complaint I would have about the book is its format. Hamilton's approach is thematic. This reader prefers verse-by-verse commentary, so the commentary suffers a little bit, in that Hamilton skipped over some of the nuances in the penteteuch which contribute to its overall account. However, I recommend the book for all those interested in a deeper look at the first 5 books of the Bible.

Book Description
The most comprehensive, up-to-date, accurate information on life in Bible times available in one volume for the general reader.
Customer Reviews:
Very adequate.......2006-09-27
An appreciation of the history, political climate, trends, and just plain way of life of persons and generations of the times of the Bible is important in the understanding of the potence of the main thrust of it. One needs to ensure that he/she is taking everything within context and divine guidance in his/her quest to understand the Bible with a derived main motive of being more of an accurate servant to God.
Although the Bible can be understood by itself in itself through careful and patient study with humility and guidance, this book is - in my opinion - is an adequate assistant. It goes through the history and meanings of customs as well as the politics and rules of the land. It has accurate maps and drawings and even gives evidence based on secular history of biblical content.
If you are a student or considering purchasing a gift for such a student of the Bible - I say that this would be appropriate.
This Books Takes You into The Biblical World.......2006-07-25
This book walks you through the streets of Jerusalem in the time of Jesus and helps you to appreciate what family and social and cultural life was like. You also get to walk with the apostle Paul through the streets of Ephesus and Colosse.
But the sections of the book that really opened my eyes was learning about life in Ur of the Chaldees and in Haran where Abram and his family relocated before God called him to leave his father's household to the place where he would show him.
Howard Vos writes in a clear and engaging style that will hold the attention of the pastor and the layperson hungry for more knowledge of the biblical world. I give it my highest recommendation.
Rev. Marc Axelrod
Excellent Bible Resource.......2006-05-17
Have you ever read the Bible and wondered why a character did or said something a certain way or why certain events took place the way they did? Like, for instance, why did Ruth lay beside Boaz's feet on the threshing floor or why did Matthew become a tax collector, and why was he so despised? Learning the cultural significance of certain things enriches one's Bible study. If you are not one to just read the Bible, but are dedicated to serious and in-depth Bible study, then this book is a must-have. Knowing the backstory of the people in the Bible lands of Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, etc., their cultural habits, and the way they lived their daily lives helps to illuminate the scriptures. For example, in the 4th chapter of the Book of John when Jesus has a conversation with the Samaritan woman, we know by the woman's statement that there was tension between Jews and Samaritans for the woman was surprised that Jesus asked her for a drink of water since the "Jews have no dealings with Samaritans." However, the text doesn't go into detail about why this tension exists, but referencing Nelson's Bible Customs and Manners will tell you that because the Samaritans were taken captive by the Assyrians, they intermarried and adopted many pagan beliefs leading to enmity between the Samaritans and the Jews. This book is an invaluable resource for learning not only the customs and manners of certain groups, but it also presents exciting articles about the political landscape, wars and captivity, socio-economic conditions, how different cultures evolved, and the impact all of this had on God's people and His purposes. It is not laid out in dictionary format; it's more encyclopedic and has a wonderful and comprehensive index. Also, the photographs are very useful and very well-placed throughout the book. This book will certainly help to increase your understanding and appreciation of the Bible.
student reviews.......2006-03-30
A real good reference work. I also have this on my LOGOS program and go to this material often. In my future as a full time student I see many times of going back to this material. Highly recommend this not only in the students library but in any one serious about biblical studies.
This is a must have book to really Understand the Bible!.......2000-02-16
If you truly want to understand the Bible Days this is a must have book. This book brings the Bible to life again. You can see every detail of how people really lived. This is not a dictionary but more of an Advanced Encyclopedia on how people really lived. I believe the Illustrated Version with the Photography is very important to have here. The Photography is so amazing and detailed. I also ordered, Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary : An Authoritative One-Volume Reference Work on the Bible, With Full-Color Illustrations... Using the two of these together you can really understand the meaning of phrases and words in the Bible.
Take for example if I said, "This is a really cool book". 1000 years from now you would think I was saying this book is very cold. But really I meant this book is very useful, neat, or exciting. These Two Nelson books go hand in hand.

New Testament Exegesis: A Handbook for Students and Pastors.......2007-02-08
New Testament Exegesis: A Handbook for Students and Pastors is a trememdous study aid that guides the user through practical applications of the process of exegesis. This book is a great resource for a student writing exegetical papers and for any pastor who teaches or preaches from the Bible.

NOT for the novice.......2006-07-10
I am in the process of acquiring the language skills in Greek as a layperson. This book has enticed me to be more active so that I can fully grasp all the nuances that are brought to light. If you are truly interested in getting really deep into the texts and textual criticism or are in seminary this is an excellent resource and pathlight to give you a goal to reach.
The Standard...........2006-01-12
The is the standard for doing biblical exegesis of the New Testament. While it is advatagous to the NT Greek student, it is also useful for those who don't know Greek, so don't let that keep you from getting this book. It has broad application and will teach you how to study the Bible and prepare your sermons or write your papers. It also lists useful resources for studying various genre of the NT and for doing background work, syntactical diagramming (Greek and English) word studies, everything. If you get this with Dr. Stuart's book on OT Exegesis, you will be able to "rightly divide" any passage in the Bible.

Book Description
Have you been skipping over references to time in the Bible because they seem too confusing? Professor Jack FineganÂ's Handbook of Biblical Chronology clarifies those ancient systems of time reckoning and the biblical passages that use them. Part 1, Principles of Chronology in the Ancient World, describes the origins of basic units of time and surveys the calendars used in the ancient Near East through the Roman era. Part 2, Problems of Chronology in the Bible, discusses major periods of the Old Testament, as well as the lives of Jesus, John the Baptist, and the Apostles Peter and Paul.
This thoroughly revised edition includes a number of improvements over the classic 1964 edition. The text has been updated, expanded, and retypeset. It features more than 190 helpful tables (including 43 new ones), new sections, new datings, full subject and Scripture indexes, a detailed table of contents, and updated bibliographies.

A Great Reference.......2000-12-20
This book is intended to help the sudent of the bible become familiar with the various issues and problems in biblical chronology. It is NOT intended to defend the biblical chronology from divergent chronologies derived from extrabiblical sources. My own area of interest being the Old Testament of patriarchal and Exodus times, I can say that the book does a fantastic job of both revealing difficulties in the biblical chronology as well as offering possibilities for solving those difficulties and preserving the reliability of the biblical record. References to extra-biblical sources are only used when explaining the intrabiblical discrepancies or apparent discrepancies. Finegan has no interest in the Egyptian and near-eastern chronologies in their own rights. He wants only to present the chronology that the bible presents. Finegan accepts the centuries long lifespans of the antedeluvians without a second thought. His aim here is not to convince or defend the validity of any statements in the bible. He only wants to help you see what the bible is telling you. While this makes the book useful to sceptics and the faithful alike, it can be frustrating to those who want to see where the bible measures up against the other ancient chronological sources. I had hoped that the bibliographic references in this book would point me to other works covering the obscure fields of Babylonian and Egyptian chronology, but they do not. If the book had discussed biblical chronology against the backdrop of other systems of chronology, I would have given it five stars. It does do its job of laying out the chronology of the bible perfectly, though, and is a fantastic reference for all students of the bible. Historians of the ancient Middle East might be a bit frustrated, though.
The best book on biblical chronology on the market........1999-06-12
Absolutely essential for straigtening out the chronology associated with Herod's death. Professor Finegan now makes it clear that Herod DID NOT die in 4 B.C. as all of us historians and theologians have thought, but in 1 B.C. This information is indispensible for the student of New Testament history and the chronology of Jesus' life and it illumines one of the darkest periods in the early imperial history of Rome. This volume changes all previous standard works for the past 100 years dealing with the Nativity of Jesus and the history dealing with it. There is much more too for the biblical student. A first class work that every library must have. Professor Finegan must be congratulated (in his 89th year of life) for producing such a splendid and profitable volume of research.

A necessary revision of a timeless book!.......1999-03-21
Amazingly, at the age of 89, Jack Finegan has revised his 1964 classic and has done a wonderful job! The new book reads a lot like the first edition, but is substantially revised to include many references up to 1996. Sections on Jesus' birth and Herod's death now discuss both the standard dating (nativity before 4 BC), and that of Martin, Keresztes, etc (3/2 BC); Finegan favors the latter dating, as well as 33 AD for the crucifixion. The new section on John the Baptist mainly focuses on the chronology of the cycle of priestly courses, which Finegan seems to over-emphasize. Literature listings and scriptural & subject indexes are each about double the lengths in the first edition. Overall, I find it a very valuable tool with up-to-date information.

Revolutionary Study Tool.......2007-08-13
If you don't have this book in your library of study tools, your library is deficient of a necessity. It is one of the greatest studies I have ever completed in 30 days. It's a "Must Have" for anyone who enjoys reading the bible or is wanting to read the bible but does not fully understand it.
Excellent overview of the Bible History.......2007-06-08
Spend 15 minutes each day, for 30 days, and you do get a firm grasp of the Bible History. Will be using it for Sunday School as well as mid-week. It does make the Bible very understandable. Excellent starting point for new Christians or inquirers. Excellent for long-time Christians who want a better understanding of the Bible.
Great biblical basics...especially helpful for younger Christians.......2007-05-10
As a part of the Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, this book gives the reader a general overview of the Bible and its themes, significant players and times in a very easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember format complete with pictures and charts that should be memorized as the reader finishes the book. The Old Testament is broken down into its various books (historical, poetical and prophetical) as well as its various eras (creation, patriarch, exodus, conquest, judges, kingdom, exile, return and silence) so the reader understands the flow of events from Genesis to Malachi.
The New Testament is broken down into the Gospel Era, The Church Era, the Missions Era and the Epistles. The book breaks down Biblical themes into eight subjects and then takes you through the fundamental doctrines of the faith. 30 Days to Understanding the Bible is a very easy read - excellent for a young Christian wanting to know how all 66 books of the Bible tie together.
I have the old edition of this book, but recently discovered that there is a new revised and expanded edition of the book that I just ran across and flipped through -- very impressive updates to this incredible book, now even more valuable than before! This book is a must-have for Christian parents wanting to train their children in God's Word or for any Christian looking to gain a comprehensive overview of Scripture.
30 Days.......2007-03-08
This is a great overview of the Bible. The comprehensive approach makes it easy to understand a general outline of the major sections and themes of the Bible. Well done! The only negative is the repetitiveness of the exercises.
Easy Read.......2007-02-25
You won't loose anyone here. This really isn't even a Bible 101 class it's more of an 050, Intro to the Bible. But, we use it with our new believers and some of our old ones who just plain forgot how it all works together. Great for small group or individual study. Must be followed up with something more substantial because this only hits the MAJOR highlights.

What's the BIBLE all about review.......2007-09-12
I have ordered at least 35 of these books for students I have taught over the past 2.5 years only because it is one of the best sources of Bible knowledge apart from the Bible itself. The organization of the material and the way it is presented makes it a great lead-in to student Bible study. It does not portent to replace the Bible, simply establish a different way of understanding what the Bible has to offer. I keep several variations of this book in my personal library. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a obtain a clear cut understanding of the Bible before they read the Bible itself.
Invaluable resource!.......2007-01-24
I can't say enough good things about this book! I have purchased it twice for each student in my Bible classes at our congregation. (5/6th grade level). I use it in my preparations to teach and since it is reproducible for that use, find it to be invaluable. I disagree doctrinally with some of the teaching in it (Calvinistic teachings) but for helping others to understand the books of the Bible and its chronology, it is wonderful. There are maps and charts as well as a good dictionary in the back of the book. Get it for your children AND yourself!
Excellent purchase!!!!.......2007-01-11
Great supplemental to the bible in a year reading plans. Additionally, a great alternative to understanding / getting through some of the more difficult chapters of the old testament.
Excellent explanation to the Bible.......2006-07-26
This book is an excellent description of each book in the Bible within about ten pages per book. It explains concepts that would otherwise go unnoticed. I am using this book for my Sunday school teachers, who are excited to be able to get a better understandng of the Bible, a long with some of my 11th and 12th grade youth who want to learn more. This is one book that you will be glad you purchased.
