Book Description

For many years Hawaiian Dictionary has been the definitive and authoritative work on the Hawaiian language. Now this indispensable reference volume has been enlarged and completely revised. More than 3,000 new entries have been added to the Hawaiian-English section bringing the total number of entries to almost 30,000, and making it the largest and most complete of any Polynesian dictionary. Other additions and changes in this section include: a method of showing stress groups to facilitate pronunciation of Hawaiian words with more than three syllables; indication of parts of speech; current scientific names of plants; use of metric measurements; additional reconstructions; classical origins of loan words; and many added cross-references to enhance understanding of the numerous nuances of Hawaiian words.

The English-Hawaiian section, a complement and supplement to the Hawaiian-English section, contains more than 12,500 entries and can serve as an index to hidden riches in the Hawaiian language. This new edition is more than a dictionary. Containing folklore, poetry, and ethnology, it will benefit Hawaiian studies for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have if you are interested in the Hawaiian language. .......2007-07-16

This is an excellent book to use as a tool for any level, from a beginner who is just started to learn to a native speaker as a quick reference guide. Since both languages are used to find words and definitions it is a very user friendly book and easily navigated. It is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Dictionary.......2006-11-10

This is a comprehensive, easy to use dictionary that not only gives direct and indirect translations, but background and contexts for use.

4 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Dictionary.......2005-09-11

Although the book was very efficiently compiled, it did not meet my needs. I need a pocket version of this edition!

5 out of 5 stars The one and only Hawaiian Dictionary.......2000-12-21

First, to correct this record, the Hawaiian Dictionary was written by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert. I have no idea who Mary Ann Spenser Pukui or Mara Kawena Pukui are supposed to be. These are typos that should immediately be corrected.

As for the validity of this dictionary, it has been the standard for more than 40 years. Anyone wishing to learn more about the Hawaiian language and culture should own this reference book. It is absolutely essential to own this book if you are considering naming anything or anyone (from dogs to boats to children) with a Hawaiian name. Hawaiian words have multiple meanings. A word that sounds lovely may have perjorative meanings that aren't readily apparent from other smaller dictionaries. Mary Kawena Pukui was the foremost expert on the Hawaiian language and culture, and this book is her legacy to those of us who love all things Hawaiian. Mahalo Kawena.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2000-01-07

This is the only acceptable dictionary for students of Hawaiian language. The author is not Mary Ann Spenser Pukui, however. The author is the well-known and most respected Hawaiian scholar, Mary Kawena Pukui.

Book Description

The Hawaiian Dictionary, by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel Elbert, has for many years been the standard work of reference for the Hawaiian language. Based on frequency of usage and cultural importance, 10,800 entries, from the 41,500 in the revised and enlarged edition of 1986, have been selected for inclusion in the New Pocket Hawaiian Dictionary.

In a compact and portable format, this dictionary up-dates scientific and common names of plants and animals; Hawaiian equivalents of given names; words borrowed from other languages; numbering and counting; practical phrases, and much more. The chapter on grammar, explained in nontechnical terms, includes a pronunciation guide.

This convenient book will be appreciated by residents, visitors, and beginning students of Hawaiian alike.

5 out of 5 stars A great little resource........2002-07-30

This book has around 11,000 words with adequate definitions.

I like the fact that the people that compiled this dictionary included names and even a guide to assist in pronounciation.

This nook is not an exhaustive researh on the Hawaiian language; but will greatly assist in research; Two Bears.

This book requires a workbook that is unavailable. It is not a good tool for learning Hawai'ian without a teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Except for Lesson One, it's a wonderful book.......2004-10-07

I found 4 great tools for learning Hawaiian, at Amazon. Your success in learning will depend on using them in the right order. They're all great.

Beginner level
1. "Learn Hawaiian at Home", by Kahikahealani Wight
If you're new to the language, this book will walk you patiently through all the basics. Slow? Yes, but it was just what I needed. There are two cassette tapes included, with all the vocabulary, dialogs, reading material and even songs! I found the package reasonably priced.

Beginner to intermediate
2. "Ka Lei Ha'aheao--Beginning Hawaiian", by Alberta Pualani Hopkins
For continuing what you learned in "Learn Hawaiian at Home", this is an excellent book. It will take you all the way through all the Hawaiian grammar, and there are lots and lots of dialogs, giving variations on what you learn.
The downside? Cassette tapes are available, and I know my progress would be much faster if I had the big bucks to buy them. I don't.

Intermediate to advanced
3. Instant Immersion CD
Good points: Very natural-sounding Hawaiian, and lots of it
Downside: If you're a beginner, this will knock the wind out of your sails. The lessons have reading passages, some with very difficult grammar.
No printed matter comes with the CDs. You have to download it from the internet.
Some vocabulary from the lessons are NOT explained. You'll need a big Pukui-Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary to find out the meanings. Not exactly user-friendly!
Still, if you love hearing the lilt of Hawaiian spoken as much as I do, you may opt to get this.

Intermediate to advanced
4. "Let's Speak Hawaiian" by Dorothy M. Kahananui & Alberta P. Anthony
Too difficult for beginners, as it was for me! Explanations are minimal. An exorbitantly-priced tape set is available, but I couldn't afford it.
I was always frustrated with myself for not being able to understand this book. However, after doing a fair amount of learning through the first two books given above, I found that "Let's Speak Hawaiian" is a wonderful extension to what I know. Get this one last!

5 out of 5 stars The seminal textbook of modern Hawaiian.......2004-08-31

Hawaiian is not a language that someone who has no experience with can simply pick up: the nuances and pronunciations alone are enough to scare off the uninitiated and the differences between Hawaiian and Western (and Eastern for that matter) cultures create difficulties that are not easily overcome by obstinate minds. Mrs. Hopkins' book was intended primarily as a textbook to be used as the text for a Hawaiian class and in a classroom environment. Having grown up in Hawaii, the pronunciations were not difficult for me and the exercises were both useful and amusing. While the grammar section in the back is by no mean comprehensive, it should be remembered that this was not meant to be a dictionary.

This is an excellent text for someone who has access to a native speaker with whom he or she can practice with and the standard by which Hawaiian textbooks should be measured.

If you don't agree with me, you are welcome to challenge my opinion in a duel--smallswords or epees--and seek a gentleman's satisfaction.

1 out of 5 stars Poor book for self instruction.......2004-01-12

I bought this book to learn the Hawaiian language on my own. This book was written for people who have access to someone who speaks the Hawaiian language. In the first chapter, it just brushes over pronunciation. The book then then gives an excercise in the end of the that chapter to review street names with someone who speaks the language. I was extremely disappointed with the grammatics and vocabulary offered and the excercises in the end of each chapter were too advanced. It seemed that the information provided in each chapter was not adequate to perform the excerises in the end of the chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Best foreign-language text I've ever used.......2003-06-26

If you thought lanugage-learning was boring, think again! Ka Lei Ha'aheo is a horse of a different color. No more memorization of useless phrases like "the pen of my aunt is on the table." No more obtuse grammar lessons. Full of concise explanations of grammar, carefully selected useful vocabulary, all cemented into place with interesting dialogs and stories, "Ka Lei Ha'aheo" makes language learning a breeze.

Better still, "Ka Lei Ha'aheo" gives the student a taste of Hawaiian history and culture, and an insight into how the language might influence its speakers to view the world differently from English speakers.

Having studied seven other languages using dozens of text books, Ka Lei Ha'aheo is by far the best language text-book I have ever used.

Mahalo nui i ka mea ka:kau.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-08-07

The good thing about this set is that it contains audio CDs and is very basic. Most of the Hawaiian language books out there are for classroom instruction or professional linguists, and do not cater to the distance learner.

However, because it is so basic it oversimplifies most features of the language, and although it will allow you to get your point across, you will still be speaking very improperly after having finished the course.

5 out of 5 stars Maika'i keia puke! (This book is good!).......2006-07-17

I absolutely love using this book as well as the two CD's. This has allowed me to learn yet another foreign language, something I love doing as a hobby. I am additionally studying German because my grandmother speaks it and Spanish because so many people in the US speak it.

Ignore the reviewer who said to buy the set for the CD's and burn the book. There is lots of important information on grammar and other general language rules that the CD's do not cover.

Kahikahealani Wight did a wonderful job creating this work. I believe 'olelo Hawai'i is one of the most beautiful languages on earth. The conversational material will be great for me to use in my future if I ever go back to Hawai`i Nei. Before I got the book, I had used what I had already known with lots of kama'aina and they seemed to be impressed. I also love learning the mele in this book because I love to sing.

Now I think I should ask my makua (parents) if we can take another trip to Hawai`i so I can speak with some more natives! I recommend this book for those of you who want to learn Hawaiian very badly or just want to study lots of languages in general.

A hui hou for now...

1 out of 5 stars A Children's Book.......2004-04-16

This book insulted my intelligence. It is so elementary that only a five year old would think it is advanced. It spends pages focusing on miniscule and practically useless attributes (such as announcers), rather than the important and meaningful ones (such as dual pronouns, and the o-class and a-class possession). Although it does touch on most elements of the language, it is very vague on every subject.

The worst part of all is that it over-complicates grammar. For instance, Wight spends chapters explaining how to structure phrases, all of which I could completely summarize in a single sentence. Then it provides merely one vague sentence to explain a concept that should take several pages to relate. Except for the vocabulary, this book is just like taking a memo-note and stretching it into an entire novel.

Using this book as a foundation only got me more confused. If you buy this package, do it only for the cassete tapes, and burn the book!

5 out of 5 stars great language learning set!.......2000-05-26

this is just the best book ever to learn about how to speak hawai'ian! if you just follow the tape and ignore the grammar part you will do well. the songs, and the pictures are wonderful. it's worth it!

Product Description

Today most people choose a name because "it sounds nice". In ancient Hawaii, and indeed in most traditional societies a name involved more than its sound. A name (inoa) was a possession, an influence for good or evil and perhaps a part of a societies history. Ones inoa was a precious personal possession and also a force in its own right. Although a person possessed his or her name, he or she was also possessed by the name. Once spoken, the inoa assumed a mystical existence and the power to help or harm the bearer. And, so went the belief, the more a name was spoken, the more powerful it came, and the more powerful the influence - good or evil.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More than you expect!.......2005-09-16

I bought this book with the intention of naming our firstborn with a Hawaiian middle name to pay homage to his roots. Da book delivered and then some! The book has many, many Hawaiian names to read through, along with short (and generally flattering) definitions. It also talks about the roots to MANY non-Hawaiian names, which was an addition that I didn't expect - very cool! Finally, the book was well thought out - not thrown together by some company to make a buck, but written by a local who obviously cared about the result.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Writing Reference...........2003-07-07

Eileen Root's book on Hawaii'an and English names is an excellent reference for writers and for those who are looking for names for their children. The first half is a list of Hawaii'an names and their definitions. The second half is a list of Anglo names and their Hawaii'an equivalent.

This is a must have for those interested in finding authentic Hawaii'an names for your research.

5 out of 5 stars I like one book............2003-04-11

This is a great little book to have if you need to look up Hawaiian names or refresh your memory of the Hawaiian language. I find it very enjoyable to browse and I am very happy to have it in my library. Never a disappointment.......

5 out of 5 stars Great for finding out the real truth about "Hawaiian names".......2003-03-27

I first found this book years ago (sadly, I need another copy!) when I was visiting Hawaii and was well, rather shocked to find out that my Hawaiian name, Kinipela, translated into "a mound of decomposing flesh!" I like how the author does her best to correct things like this and find names based on their meanings and what words may correspond to that in Hawaiian. Definitely a book to read before you get into "Hawaiian names!"

5 out of 5 stars Well written, researched and laid out.......2001-01-20

I found this book to be exceptional not only for its namelists but also in selecting the appropriate intonation for the prospective name, something that not too many books can lend aid in a clear and concise manner. I am Hawaiian (although many years removed from the island and culture) and found the explanations thought provoking and meaningful. The author is to be commended on her excellent interpretation not only of the names but in her understanding of the aloha spirit which she conveys so well.

Ecellent approach to the language where the Hawai'ian and English are separated. The movement through the laguage is very practical. Maika'i noo.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book to work with.......2001-02-07

This is a first-rate book. I certainly recommend it as a good place to start for anyone interested in keeping this beautiful language alive (and it is also is a good point of departure for anyone interested in Polynesian languages in general.) Each lesson begins with a section of sentences that introduce new grammatical patterns as well as new vocabulary, and at the end of each lesson each pattern and each usage is explained very thoroughly. The lessons progress from each one to the next very smoothly. Many of the exercises and drills are clearly intended to be done in a classroom setting, but it isn't too difficult to adapt them to home use.

5 out of 5 stars The DEFINITIVE Hawaiian book!.......2006-04-18

THIS IS A FUN BOOK! I've been teaching myself Hawaiian for 3 years (you'll find my Amazon reviews for the books I used) and have at times been frustrated with the very limited scope of each resource.
This book has ERADICATED my frustration! It's truly an answer to my prayers.
DOWNSIDE: None.
UPSIDE: Here's a list:
1. The Hawaiian-English section uses a Hawaiian-cultural standpoint as basis.
2. The English-Hawaiian section uses a Western-cultural standpoint as basis.
3. There are over 5,000 entries in Hawaiian and English.
4. Most of the words are used in actual, modern sentences.
5. There are literally thousands of such useful sentences.
6. Words with multiple meanings are explained.
7. Every type of sentence structure is here.
8. There are wonderful line drawings.
9. A lot of the sentences are colorful: "While she was driving, her tears fell."
10. A lot of the sentences are topical: "The Hawaiian race has known the pain of injustice".
11. There are 448 pages.
12. It's pocket-sized.
13. It makes Hawaiian an accessible, flexible and LIVING language.
14. All this for only $9.95.

If you're learning Hawaiian and have gotten through the elementals, this book will take you upward and onward, and you'll have a lot of fun in the process! I've been reading mine daily, and I never fail to find something useful, interesting and fun. I wish I could give this book 20 stars.

    Product Description

The English-Hawaiian Dictionary is the companion volume to the popular Hawaiian-English Dictionary published in 1957. Both were compiled by the same distinguished authors: Mary Kawena Pukui, leading authority on the Hawaiian language, and Samuel H. Elbert, specialist in Polynesian languages and compiler of other Pacific language dictionaries. This volume furnishes Hawaiian equivalents of approximately 12,500 English words. While serving as a key to the 25,000 entries in the Hawaiian-English Dictionary, it is designed nonetheless to be used independently. The volume may be used as a means to consult the earlier Hawaiian-English Dictionary for the benefit of its richly illustrative phrases and its highly detailed treatment. A special feature is a supplement giving the Hawaiian equivalent of some 700 English given names.
