1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2007-09-15

I recently purchased Barron's "Grammar The Easy Way" to brush up on my English grammar. Based on the 5-star reviews, it looked like the perfect book to meet my needs. I quit reading after 12 pages. The organization, examples, and explanations are, in my opinion, very poor. How this book got 5 stars is beyond me. The reviews had to be submitted by the author, his friends, Barron's, or someone they bribed. Don't waste your money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-10

1 out of 5 stars English the Easy Way by Schachter & Schneiter Williams.......2005-04-28

Sorry authors but this book sucks...excuse the grammar. I really couldn't understand what the other reviewer meant by "answers", but now I do. There is no answer key. I looked everywhere for it. The only way you can get one is from the publisher and if you aren't a teacher, forget about it. If this is the case then why isn't it somewhere in bold so you don't waste $40 and precious time. The lady I spoke with at Thomson-SouthWestern said that they do it this way because they don't want school kids to get the answer key. She never could give me a reason why they offer this book to the mass public. Anyway, the book is well written but if you are not a teacher and need it for reviewing basic English don't waste you dough (money). Now I see why the 2nd reviewer gave such a good review...She/He's a TEACHER! DUH! *Happy Hunting*

I'm using this book to teach an English grammar class, and it has been very helpful. It's easy to follow and logically laid out. I've found it better than a few other English grammar books I've seen. There are plenty of exercises.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best workbook I have owned........2006-05-31

This has to be the best workbook to easily learn Italian.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Workbook for Review and Additional Practice.......2005-08-23

Despite what any foreign language learning book says, there is no quick way to learn a language. At the same time, this book is a very good review or supplemental workbook and the title should be renamed "Italian: The Fun Way." In addition to short readings, dialogues and comprehension activities, there are some crossword and word-search puzzles. The first chapter, with the Italian sounds and pronunciations, is a feature which textbooks ought to follow because correct speaking is necessary for doing well in comprehension. The organizational charts are also superior to most textbooks, so that students will quickly understand the material. Also, all of the answers to the activities are furnished at the back of the book. Furthermore, the vocabulary checklist is a good way for students to record their progress. Although the material is not particularly unique as this information can be obtained through any first year textbook, the organization makes recalling knowledge much easier, and perhaps, helpful to students who need additional practice. Finally, the reasoning behind the lower ranking score is because the book does not have audio, and it seems necessary in order to study a language that there are audio lessons included with any type of language workbook. The title should also not give a false impression of the amount of hard work behind learning a language.

4 out of 5 stars A great book to continue Italian studies.......2003-10-09

This book is great for anyone who already has some working knowledge of Italian and wants to expand their skills. However, I would never recommend this book as a starting place to learn Italian from the ground up. It moves quickly and assumes some knowledge beforehand.

5 out of 5 stars Brush up your Italian.......2003-08-13

I achieved a reasonable degree of proficiency in Italian several years ago, but through lack of use, have forgotten a lot. I bought this book with the intention of doing some self-guided study to "brush up". It is absolutely perfect for that use.

Each short lesson is followed by numerous written exercises. All the answers are in the back (no peeking!)

The book would be a useful supplement for anyone learning Italian through other means - in a class, via audio or computer-based courses. It would give the curious a basic understanding of grammar, but would not be a useful single tool for achieving spoken fluency or comprehension as it does not involve listening or speaking.

But for those in my situation, it is perfect, and much cheaper than buying a full grammar text and/or audio course, much of which you might not need.

5 out of 5 stars Great review book.......2002-01-21

I studied Italian many years ago and wanted to refresh my understanding. This book has been a great help. The subject matter is well organized into tables and there are plenty of exercises to help you check your understanding. There are also lots of tips and other explanations to clarify the presented material. I highly recommend this book.

Every second language speaker of English should have this book in order to communicate effectively in English.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars german the easy way.......2004-05-21

I am an "experienced languanges learner" and have had several books and methods. This is an intermediate level book focused in exercises. I strongly recommend it, if you need a quick and straightforward review of the language, because the author understands exactly what a native english speaker requires to understand and learn the german grammar. The exercises in this book are very good and focuses on the conflictive cases of the grammar. Also the way to present texts concerning a grammar issue and new vocabulary altogether is very well accomplished. I have used this book together with a grammar book from the Goethe Institut to prepare for the AP test and it worked fine.

1 out of 5 stars A wretched horrible book........2004-02-05

I have to agree with some of the other reviews here. This book is the most awful language book I have ever seen. I looked at the book quickly (too quickly) in the store and saw that it seemed a well organized grammar reference combined with lots of excercises that would reinforce the grammar. Wrong.

First of all, the grammar is horribly organized and explained. Secondly (I will hunt down the author for this), vocabulary items are mixed into the explanations! This not only clutters up the explanations, making them more confusing than they already are, but it means if you are studying the vocabulary you need to look in several little snippets dispersed throughout the chapter. As mentioned, the grammar is often given in an anecdotal kind of way, rather than in clear and simple tables. The examples for everthing are obtuse and for the most part of limited value. Like the infamous 'la plume de ma tante est sur le bureau de mon oncle' from hideous French books, you will never in a million years have an opportunity to use most of the examples. As for the excercises, I'm sure they have a use, but practicing and reinforcing your grammar knowledge isn't it.

I don't think you could write a worse book if you tried. It is not a learning book (try the Teach Yourelf German books, the Hugo 'German in Three Month' book, or the Living Language 'Ultimate German' book for that). It is also not a reference book, nor is it a review and practice book. An unfortunate waste of several thousand trees.

2 out of 5 stars A deep disappointment........2003-06-27

Having completed a six-month crash course in conversational German, I could ask for the train station or if soup came with the meal, but my grammar still needed just a bit of polishing--okay, okay, I did everything in my power not to use a single adjective while in Germany. I thought this book would be just the thing: each chapter is set up as an exploration of one aspect of the German language, reference-grammar style, with page after page of exercises. And, of course that's the way to learn those adjective endings: use them, over and over again, until they get into your blood.

But in the event, the book was a disaster. The grammatical explanations are almost entirely un-illuminating; the layout of the material is unspeakably wretched. What can you say to a presentation of the "strong" adjective endings that is spread out across two pages with the following comment: "Most strong endings are the same as those of the definite article?"

Well, Professor Graves, you're on to a good idea there, since most students with a little German have worked the definite article under our skins. But why don't you just tell us which endings are different? Or present the endings in a single table on a single page with the der-die-das table off to the side?

Of course, he does neither of those things. The endings are one or two letters and would fit comfortably in quite a narrow table, but Graves must clutter up the presentation with useless debris, so one entry covers two lines of text: "brav_e_ Kind_er_" and on the next line, "good children." By providing English and German, he feels compelled to set off all of the German text in boldface, with the endings themselves--the important information--in bold italics. And, since bold italics have less width, less ink, and less visual "weight" than plain boldface, this has the perverse result of making the endings--the whole point of the table--harder to pick out of the text! To say nothing of the fact that the ending of the _noun_ receives precisely as much emphasis as that of the adjective, and that the width of the entries, combined with the spacing and the generous margins on the page, force him to deal with masculine and feminine on page 29, and neuter and plural in another table on page 30!

How on earth is the student meant to gain from this? What I want to see is the pattern of the endings, and how they differ from the pattern of definite article endings. In the end, I had to take out my pen and make my own table in the margin of page 30, continually flipping back and forth to copy out the half of Graves' table that was uselessly on the other side of the paper. I then wrote out a table of the definite articles, compared the two, and circled the genitive singular, masculine and neuter endings--the answer to the professor's little puzzle about which endings differ from the der-die-das pattern (they use -en instead of -es). After all that, I finally have some useful data in a usable format, and a pearl of insight into the adjectives that coy Professor Graves couldn't make the time to just put into the text.

Whatever he was spending his time on, it certainly wasn't writing good German text. Now, I realize that this is a basic-level book, and certain limitations exist. But my textbooks such as "Teach Yourself German" and "Colloquial German" somehow managed to come up with simple text that, although a bit stilted, managed to be useful, plausible, and even a trifle engaging. And here? "The splendid educational method of the parents results in the good manners of the well-behaved children." Now, this reads like something out of the Quotations of Chairman Mao in the first place, but there is a far more serious complaint to be lodged--wouldn't it be better if we were flipping back and forth through the book to look up the words for "envelope," "gas station," or "jacket" than "splendid educational method?"

Then we have the passage "Ein Witz" (A Joke), which really shows off the sheer terribleness of the writing, and adds a little casual sexual harassment as a bonus: "Shall I tell you something about the bookkeeper in our office?" "Yes, please." "Well, yesterday suddenly he steps up to our pretty typist, grabs her, and kisses her. At this moment the boss enters and says: 'For this I'm paying you?' What do you think, Mrs. Muller, does the bookkeeper tell him?" "I am anxious to know." "'No, this I do for free.'" It is easy to be boring, and it is easy to be insulting. Doing both in the space of one third of a page shows a unique literary ability.

In the end, I tried to tackle this book on four occasions. I thought to myself, yes, the writing is awful, but I need the practice. And perhaps there is some value to be wrung out of this book--but my time is just too scarce to waste it here, when so many other teachers have taken the time to prepare books that are actually useful and engaging. I will mention just a few: Nice and Easy German Grammar, Teach Yourself German Grammar, and 1001 Pitfalls in German, all of which soar where this book stalls.

I've now moved on to "Teach Yourself German Extra," and I'm back to interest, enjoyment and advancement. May I encourage you to profit from my mistake, and avoid making a fruitless detour into the morass of "The Easy Way?"

4 out of 5 stars Good for an intermediate..........2002-02-08

Personally, I enjoyed this book. I thought that the writing was fine, and at times, quite humourous. One great thing about this book is the exercises that are written in each chapter - they really make you think, and make you remember what you learned throughout the chapter. Unfortunately, the book doesn't give you enough space for you to write in your answers, but that didn't pose much of a problem for me. Another downfall is that there aren't any pictures, unlike "French: The Easy Way" and "Spanish: The Easy Way", which were recently purchased by my family.

Before buying this book, I would recommend reading another book on German grammar, just to get a feel for the language. I think this book is most effectively used when the reader has somewhat of an understanding of the German language, and it should not be used by someone who has never studied German before. If you want to start learning German, you should look into the Berlitz books; especially the "Essentials" series. "Essential German" is the first book about the German language that I bought, and I think it's wonderful.

Overall, this is a fine book. If you've studied German before, or know something about the language, I advise you purchase "German: The Easy Way".

3 out of 5 stars Ummm... yuck.......2000-10-25

This definitely doesn't live up to the standard set by the other Easy Way Books. The writing is awful. Sure, it helps you learn german, but if you need to do that there are many other books out there that will do the job better, with better writing. The book would actually be very good if this guy wasn't such a horrible writer. His paragraphs lack coherence and jump from idea to idea without any sort of "bridge". Even his commentary is disorganized. In most areas its good, but the horrible prose makes it a chore to read. Did I mention that the writing sucks?

5 out of 5 stars worth every penny!.......2007-03-12

French the Easy Way is, in my opinion, a definate buy if you know nothing about French and are just starting out, or if you took it in school, totally forgot it (like me) and want to re-learn it. Basically, it's a work book and grammar book all in one.

I am so glad I bought it. In addition to providing a pretty solid foundation for further study, this book is a breath of fresh air. Many language books are confusing, illogical, ill-organized and just give you a bunch of seemingly meaningless phrases to memorize! The well-written lessons get to the point quickly without confusing you with a bunch of mumbo-jumbo convoluted phrasing. The lesson chapters themselves are organized one after the other in a logical sequence. The excercises, although kind of too simple at times, are overall quite effective and fun to do. Also for a beginning language book, the (often mind-numbingly dumb) reading material is actually pretty funny.

This book does not cover prononciation or French culture; it's just a bare bones BASIC grammar book with basic vocabulary. However, as simple as it is, it still packs a punch.

If you wind up buying this book, I suggest studying the lessons first, vocabulary list next, then onto the story at the beginning of each chapter. Rinse, lather, repeat.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Grammar Book.......2006-11-25

I just recently bought this book and I really like how it explains the grammar in an easy and clear way. Grammar is something I dread. Things that I had a lot of trouble understanding in other books, were made clear quickly and easily in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good Grammar Book.......2006-11-19

I took a basic French conversation class and used this book as a supplement to learn how to conjugate verbs, improve my vocabulary, etc. The exercises are easy and you can do them on your own.

Some of the weaknesses are that (1.) it doesn't have CDs (2.) the vocabulary is targeted towards middle- to high-school kids and (3.) the exercises are very basic and cover mostly present tense.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But With One Big Flaw.......2006-02-07

This is a nice book for anyone looking to learn the basics of the French language. It's essentially what you might learn were you to take French 1 in high school or an introductory college level course. The exercises are fun and engaging but there is still one flaw that is excruciatingly annoying if you are attempting to use this as a self-instruction medium -- the pronunciation guide is essentially non existent. Half a page for covering the complexity of French pronunciation? It's ridiculous that an author would create such a fine work, include so many helpful exercises and prompts, claiming that the purpose of the book is for "communication purposes," and then give essentially no detail-oriented instruction on the pronunciation of the language. More over, the pitiful little pronunciation guide is complicated to comprehend and in some cases, either blatantly unconcerned with certain special cases of French pronunciation or just flat out wrong. Perhaps I'm too much of a conspiracy theorist, but one paragraph inparticular from the introduction caught my attention. It reads, "The guide to pronunciation of French sounds...is merely a guide. If you want to improve your fluency and pronunciation of French, I would recommend "Pronounce it Perfectly in French," also issued by Barron's Education Series, Inc." Well, isn't that convenient.

All-in-all, it's a book ample in practice exercises, grammar points, and vocabulary, but Dr. Kendris' insistence that he wrote this as a communication guide, not for the purposes of merely comprehending writings, and the subsequent lack of pronunciation points is something that I simply cannot move past. So, if you know nothing of French or haven't already purchased a copy of the Barron's French pronunciation guide, be aware of this book's one serious flaw.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2005-08-24

This book is great for beginners. It has a lot of interesting dialogue with pictures and exercises. However, if you want more comprensive grammar explanations, you might want to purchase another more grammar-orientated book to go along with this one!

Oprah Book Club® Selection, December 1997: Well-loved comedian Bill Cosby encourages kids to get creative in this simple story of how your own imagination can take you farther into outer space--and help you chase more aliens--than any TV show or video game ever could. In The Best Way to Play--one of Cosby's three Little Bill books for emerging readers--Little Bill tells his story from a friendly, first-person point of view, starting Saturday morning, when "All of the grown-ups were busy doing grown-up things."

He and the neighborhood kids are watching TV when they see an ad for a Space Explorers video game that instantly infuses desperate longing into their alien-catching little hearts. When Little Bill's friend Andrew gets a copy, everyone is thrilled. However, after quickly catching 100 aliens and getting perfect scores, the kids are bored with the game. They head for their trusty vacant lot where they chase an alien that looks like a cat and proceed to fly all the way to the moon! (Or at least they pretend to.) When Little Bill confesses to his mom that it was more fun to play outside than with the game, she says, "I'm glad. Now go to sleep. Space Explorers need their rest." While the engaging, upbeat story itself escapes heavy-handedness, the message is clear, clear, clear. Varnette P. Honeywood's flat, boldly colorful illustrations are full of life and expression, and early readers will welcome the spacious format, with large type and only a few short sentences on every page. (Ages 5 to 8)

Book Description

Little Bill and his friends LOVE the TV show Space Explorers. And so when the new Space Explorers video game comes out, they each want a copy. But when Little Bill asks his parents to buy him the game, they say no. So Little Bill and his friends go to their friend Andrew's house to play the game. What they discover, though, is that the video game isn't nearly as much fun nor as challenging as what their imaginations can dream up!

These level 3 chapter books are great confidence builders for those readers just getting comfortable with reading. The story is engaging and the chapters give a sense of accomplishment along with suspense (whats going to happen next). Funny with a good message also.

4 out of 5 stars A good imagination beats a video game (almost) any day.......2004-03-26

In "The Best Way to Play" Little Bill and his friends find out that their favorite television "Space Explorers" has a new video game, so they all go home and start hounding their parents to spend fifty bucks to buy it for them. However, Big Bill says for Little Bill to ask his mother, his mother thinks $50 is too much to spend on a toy, and Alice the Great thinks he should be asking his parents for a book. The situation is that Little Bill and his friends do not think that they can have any fun less they have the new game. But, as Little Bill's mother correctly points out, asking and getting are two different things.

The point of this Little Bill Book for Beginning Readers, which is illustrated by Varnette P. Honeywood, is that Little Bill and his friends already had a great way of having fun without the new video game when they were waiting for "Space Explorers" to start and were imagining that they had their own space ship sailing through the galaxy. In his introductory letter to parents child psychiatry specialist Dr. Alvin Pouissant points out that using "television as a springboard for creative play" is a great way for children to develop their imaginations and to benefit from physical activity.

Bill Cosby's story also has a message about advertising hype that notes how the actual product is often disappointing. However, this particular point may well be the weak point in Cosby's argument. The "Space Explorers" video game is apparently easy enough that Little Bill and his friends can all get perfect scores. I am sure there are video games out there combine the twin sins of being expensive and not challenging, but my experience with such games has been that they can be the latter without being the former. It seems to me that many of the most popular video games are so challenging that you have to spend additional money to pick up a guidebook that teaches you how to get to the next level. Consequently, the potency of Cosby's argument in "The Best Way to Play" might hinge on the actual experience of beginning readers with video games in the real world.

For the first time, my son has truly enjoyed story time/reading. I can't explain it, but he just adores these Little Bill books. We have tried EVERYTHING to get him interested in reading and listening to stories. Maybe a 4 1/2 yr. old can simply relate! We all like the values being taught as well as the illustrations. It is a real joy to see and hear our son "read" us Little Bill stories. What a blessing these stories/books have been to our family. Thank you Bill and Varnette!

5 out of 5 stars Hit The Right Notes and Enjoy Playing for the First Time.......2000-01-12

I've been playing the piano by ear for forty years and finally there is a book with dozens of songs I love and with a simple code system for hitting the right notes that allows me to enjoy playing. My playing does not torture my family anymore and I even am playing the simple cords provided. The choice of music is varied and broken into six sections: Hits Forever and Ever; The Great Show Tunes; Great Film Memories; Looking Way Back; Inspirational, Country & Folk; and Songs for Celebrations.

I have played and sung songs from every category. I am a good singer, but rarely sing alone unless someone is accompanying me. Now I accompany myself and a whole new world has opened up for me. The jury is still out with my family, but, as I get better at playing, they'll start to come around. After all, isn't live music in a home a wonderful thing?

There aren't many songs I don't know and I find myself playing and singing one song after another when for years all I could play by heart were a few old standards. Now I can play dozens of songs. I am in love with this book and want to know where I can order other song books by The Readers Digest and William L. Simon.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book with songs we all love to sing........1998-01-27

I was so delighted with this book when I sat down at the piano and was able to play the easy versions of songs that are from my past--even "Bringing in the Sheaves" and "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" were songs from my childhood that brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart.
