THIS IS AN INFORMATIVE BOOK.......2007-08-07
I purchased this to learn more about the field I am in. Its thorough and easy to navigate.
Get it!!.......2004-02-24
After 30 plus years in this field, I still have questions. This book answers them, in easy to understand motor shop talk. Between this book and "Electric Motor Repair" (Rosenberg and Hand), most questions will be answered.
Disappointed.......2002-04-05
I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years.
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

The recommended 'smoke tests' and dangerous high voltage tests can be avoided these days, and are dangerous in their own right (safety issues).

Thomas Edison Tech. Voc. H.S. Grad NYC.......2006-09-14
I received this book in High School as part of the "Electrical Installation" curricullum in January of 1986. At the advice of my instructor, Mr. Bergovoy, I didn't return the book at the end of the school term. I ended up having to pay for the replacement. However, this book has paid for itself thousands of times over the last 20 years. I recommend it to electricians ranging from the student to the master level..
Excellent guide.......2004-03-03
I am an electrician whose job requires trouble shooting different types of equipment for different customers in many different environments. I see all kinds of motors and machines and jury rigs. This book is invaluable for troubleshooting any motor on the planet. It gives excellent reference schematics and diagrams that coincide with the different chapters. It has helped me on many occasions. It's really meant for poeple who
re-wind motors more than trouble shooters but you will not regret owning it if you do any kind of maintenance or trouble shooting on a variety of machines.
Best of the Best.......2002-05-09
If your looking for a book that is all meat, if your looking for the "bible" of motors, if your desire for motor knoweledge is from the most basic to advance knoweledge.....YOU have to buy this book. I am an electrician, and industrial controls technician and I have found no better book. I am looking through my well used second edition, that was given to me while in college in 1984, and if you could see just my first page of the book, at how much highlighting and notes in the margins there are, you would see that nearly every sentence in the book is packed full of useful information,...IF... you take the time to read it. I believe it is as clearly written as you can get on a technical subject. I consider myself just a slightly above average student, and even I could understand this material. From casual interest in motors to engineer, this book needs to be on your technical bookshelf, unlike other technical books at this price that I threw out after college, this is a keeper. Check out all the other reviewers here, then buy the book.
Electric motor repair........2000-01-23
This book is great. I've read many books on repairing electric motors , but none of them have given me a practical & theoretical view on the subject as this book has. I recommend this book to students, and fully quallified engineers. The best...... My greatest thanks to the authors.

RV Electrical Systems: A Basic Guide to Troubleshooting, Repairing and Improvement.......2007-04-11
This is a highly detailed book on RV Electrical Systems. If you are a little bit of a tec head this book may be for you.
RV electrical guide.......2007-02-13
The book is wonderful and easy to follow with good illustrations and photographs. It covers pretty much the gammut of electrical items found on an RV -- way more than I will probably need, but its good to know it's all there. The book was purchased used and the description stated in excellent condition, but when it arrived, it was not what I would call excellent -- dog eared pages and warped pages- like the top end of the pages had gotten wet. It is still very readable and usable, but I strongly disagree with the booksellers rating of its quality.
Easy to understand in plain english!.......2006-05-13
This will teach most (non-electrician by trade) people many useful things that will make their trips more enjoyable.(reduce operator error).
Easy-to-understand information for do-it-yourselfers.......2006-02-19
Bought book to help plan an RV electrical system upgrade and it more than met my expectations. Found the book fairly easy to understand with a wealth of specific information about the "whys" and "wherefores" of wire, fuses, circuits, batteries, battery charging, electrical loads, etc. Author also includes a wealth of technical info for tech types who want greater detail.
Moeller's "RV Electrical Systems" a Live Wire!.......2004-08-10
As the co-author of "RV Boondocking Basics--A Guide to Living Without Utility Hookups" (available on Amazon) I not only have read, but keep on my active RV bookshelf the Moellers' tome. It's thick, but covers a wide variety of important topics that all RVers, not just "do it yourselfers" need to be aware of.
From low voltage to "shore power" circuits, the Moellers explain in clear language how to maintain, operate, and KEEP SAFE with electricty in and around your RV. Diagrams, illustrations, and photos make it a well-used book around our rig.
A great book!

Very good repair manual.......2007-08-09
Usually Clymer falls short on the repair books. This is not the case here. I found the material easy to locate, written in a clear manner with good diagrams, photos and sidebar information.
Worst Technical Manual Ever Written.......2006-03-13
I have owned and read countless technical/shop manuals over the years and this is hands-down the WORST of them all. The organization of subject matter is terrible. You don't know which chapter to look for what. The table of contents and index are of no use. The manual reads like a novel- in paragraph form. You'll find yourself reading through paragraphs of non-pertinent information to find a number your are looking for such as the specified ignition timing. The information in this book is also very incomplete at best. In fact, this book does not even list the maximum RPM range for the motors. One chapter refers the reader to Chapter 5 for maximum operating RPM range, but this information is nowhere to be found in Chapter 5, or anywhere else for that matter! There are plenty of other dissappointments such as reference to lousy black-and-white pictures to identify a single screw that's not even labeled. If you're looking for a book that reads like a supermarket pulp fiction novel that will give you very basic small engine 101 knowledge, this book might be for you. If you are looking for a manual you can actually use for technical reference, do not buy this book! You will be sorely dissappointed. Instead, try the book by Seloc.
Not enough.......2004-07-27
This book has a pretty good trouble shooting section and wiring diagrams. BUT It has no index which makes it really hard to cut to the parts you need w/out having to wade through a bunch of stuff you don't need. The pictures are OK as far as they go but it'd be better with more short of what the engined look like on the boat (where most are serviced). There isn't much description of how a system ought to work other than the general one describing what a system should do, nothing about, say, how to get inside the power tilt to service it on the boat...rather its there but you have to read between the lines. Some Owners Maual type descriptiones would be more helpful.
did the job.................2001-08-15
it showed me enough info and in a way i could understand. i had a small job (which got larger as i got into it)to do on my trusty old 8hp motor for my sailboat, and i found all the info i needed to take it apart and fix it and more important to put it back together again . i recommend this book to anyone who needs to do a job that they dont want to pay someone else to do, good photos help a lot. ...........martin
Essential general guide for at home mechanic.......1998-09-17
This is an essential reference guide that cover a wide variety of outboard motors. It might not be specific enough for the more serious repairs, but is good enough to point you in the right direction. The trouble shooting section was informative and concise although I had a problem that was not listed.

How to Diagnose and Repair Automotive Electrical Systems (Motorbooks Workshop)
ASIN: 0130799793 |
Customer Reviews:
Below par........2003-08-24
This book has many small editing errors throughout. Some pages are not numbered.
A large percent of the photos are sub-standard in quality
(Bad lighting and much too cluttered to see exactly what is being ref. in the text. See pages 472-474 and many others.)
I think the Index is very poor. (As an example the word KNOCK is not included!)Many other important subjects are not included as well. Remote door locks are not adequately covered.
Many of the glossary items only tell what an entry means, not what it does or how it fits into the system, or where it is covered in the book.
The workbook suffers from some of the same problems as above but in addition has some plain lacking/wrong/improper instructions.
The CD-ROM does not expand on the book to any great extent. Its videos do not show any engine applications at all. Only vary basic use of a V/A meter. The CD-ROM waveforms are not accompanied with any audio or text so it is hard to know what you are looking at and why.
Best automotive book I've ever read.......2003-02-16
This is the first book I've ever read that tells you "WHY" you are doing something and how each component is constructed in "plain english". Once you understand what each part is and more importantly, how each part connects to each other and how they work as a team. Better than any ASE test book, better than a Mitchell manual, this book starts from the basics and you learn how everything works from the inside out. Full of diagnostic tips you don't find in most books, telling you how to use the most simple of tools to test the electronic systems with ease and accuracy. THIS IS ONE SUPER BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO UNDERSTAND THE MODERN ELECTRONIC AUTOMOBILE WITHOUT A HARVARD DEGREE IN ELECTRONICS !
Automotive Electrical Systems.......2000-01-30
I use Halderman's book as the primary source in automotive electrical training in a classrom setting. ASE study guides are good for revue but presume knowledge of the subject. OEM training materials that I have used are either too basic (Mister Electron) or too specific (GM CS alternators).

Old Outboard Motor Service Manual.......2006-05-02
Besides providing valuable insormation about specific brands of motors, this manual explains how to service most old motors. With the help of this book, I was able to get two old (1946-1947) motors running almost as good as new.
Old Outboard Motor Manual.......2006-03-14
This manual is better than expected. I am a student at B.S.U. and am studying old outbord repair and technology. This manual has been a great help to me. Thank you for a great product. The book also arrived in perfect shape and earlier than expected, Thanks again. I would do business with you again anytime, and I probably will! Bruce
Old Outboard Motor Service Manual: Covers Motors 30 hp & up.......2000-05-30
The referenced book was purchased as I have a 1958 35 horsepower motor but lacked any servicing information. This manual is not exactly what I expected having been used automotive repair manuals available with step by step diagnosis and repair. It has a basic overview of motor design fundamentals. It also has sections for general maintenance and a somewhat vague section for troubleshooting. It covers several manufacturers and supplies individual specs for many motors. You will not be able to work on your motor by reading this book if you do not have a good working knowkledge of Outboard engines. However, it has quality information encompassing a broad number of motors. I am disappointed in the quality of the book itself. The pages are thin. The print is too small. Pages started falling out nearly immediately. It has some good exploded diagrams but they are way too small. Overall it is better than any other manual I've been able to find so far. With that in mind, I would buy it again despite its faults.
models covered.......2000-02-10
If you have a motor made before 1955 I would pass on this book,so far I have found NO INFORMATION for motors made prior to this date.
