Handy.......2003-08-06
This is a helpful guide to help a teacher plan lessons for language classes. Each lesson is easily adaptable to all ages and levels. The lessons are organized according to topic and actually go in order as if you are actually beginning a class, commencing with get-to-know-you exercises. There are a lot of fun activities included that coincide with each lesson's topic. There is a lot of information provided if you need a lot of help as well as considerable room for you to tailor a lesson to your class.
Book Description
Struggling older English learners pose a real challenge for educators. Some of these students are new arrivals with limited or interrupted schooling. Others have been in and out of ESL and bilingual programs in this country since kindergarten, but have never succeeded academically. How can teachers help older students who lack academic content knowledge and English language proficiency catch up with their classmates? Yvonne and David Freeman provide four research-based keys for closing the achievement gap.
three teachers have put this theory into practice to reach their older English learners. These teachers organize curriculum around themes, use predictable classroom routines, and scaffold instruction in a variety of ways. The clear examples from their classes will help other teachers implement effective practices for their older English learners.
Closing the Achievement Gap features:
the four keys for school success for older English learners
clear distinctions among the types of older English learners in our schools with examples of students from each category
a thorough discussion of the kinds of language proficiency older English learners need
a review of the latest research on effective practices for older English learners
detailed descriptions from the classrooms of three teachers, including thematic units they have developed, their daily routines, and the strategies they use to scaffold instruction
professional extension activities to help readers apply the information in this book to their own educational settings.
For teachers and teacher educators, program directors, resource personnel, and administrators, this book offers both the research and practice schools need to develop effective programs to educate struggling older English learners.

bar bar bar.......2007-05-13
The content of this book is not the problem, it is its poor organizational structure. It is redundant and organized in an unhelpful way, so that the read focusses on the repetitive statement(s), leaving the seemingly tidbits of research and theory to get lost. It's like having a simple base beat up too loud and dragging on throughout a whole album. They could have summed up the content of this book in 2-3 short articles with greater success. The content, however, was helpful!
Amazing resource for ESL teachers!.......2007-01-10
I bought this book to complete some research for my thesis and it turned out to be the best resource I have seen in a while. I have shared the book with all my colleagues and fellows graduate students. I would highly recommend this book to any and all teachers and particularly those who teach language learners.
"Closing the Achievement Gap", August 22, 2002.......2002-08-22
This book, "Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited-Formal-Schooling and Long Term English Learners", is an excellent resource for teachers of older English learners with limited formal schooling or English learners with more conversational than academic fluency. Yvonne S. Freeman and David E. Freeman, professors at the Graduate School at Fresno Pacific University, describe in detail these two types of students and provide four main ideas to help teachers meet the academic needs of these struggling students. The Freemans' also cite research on effective teaching practices and describe three teachers working with these particular students in a multi-grade, a middle, and a high school classroom. All three teachers are successfully implementing research proven theories in their classroom practices to help close the achievement gap.
Overall, the Freemans' did a good job in examining each point thoroughly. The format was concise, comprehensible, and the strategies described can easily be used with my Newcomer students. I thought it was a good idea to present three different perspectives of teachers working with a range of age groups. It demonstrated that the theories and strategies presented can be effective across grade levels.
I recommend that school administrators and professors of teaching candidates also read the book for the strategies presented and for the valuable research on second language acquisition. The academic gap of struggling English learners will only continue to widen if educators and administrators do not become more knowledgeable in this area.

Product Description
This resource brings together information about policy, second language acquisition theory and research, methods and materials for teaching adult English language learners, program design, and cross-cultural issues that effect learning in adult ESL classrooms. It also discusses the context within which adult ESOL instructors work and in which adult ESOL programs function. The framework for this discussion of context draws from the developing framework of standards for teachers of adult learners under consideration by TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc.). This book is designed for faculty and students in adult education graduate programs and other TESOL preparation programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels that target adult learners. Other audiences are adult ESL program directors and policy makers as well as educators working in elementary and high school, many of whom are connected to populations of adult learners through the parents of the children they serve.
Customer Reviews:
Adult ESL Resource.......2007-07-20
This resource may be geared more towards program directors than individual teachers. However, due to the fact that the field of ESOL is relatively new and there are limited resources in the area of Adult ESOL this is an important find for anyone interested in teaching or tutoring ESOL.
A strongly recommended addition to professional and academic library Adult Education and ESL reference and resource collections.......2006-04-03
Part of Krieger's "Professional Practices Series in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning" and specifically intended for faculty and students in adult education graduate programs and other "Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages" preparational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels targeting mature learners, Teaching Adult English Language Learners by ESL educator Richard A. Orem presents core information about policy, second language acquisition theory and research, methods and materials for teaching adult English Language learners, program design, and cross-cultural issues that effect learning in adult ESL classes. Teaching Adult English Language Learners also addresses the context within which adult ESOL teachers to work and in which adult ESOL programs function. Teaching Adult English Language Learners is a substantive and strongly recommended addition to professional and academic library Adult Education and ESL reference and resource collections.

Customer Reviews:
True to Life says it all........2001-04-02
My first impression of the coursebook is very good. The overall publication itself is slick and inviting through the use of good quality materials and a glossy cover with modern colours, graphics and layout. The layout of the units in the coursebook is also very clear and easy to follow. The authors begin with the contents, listing each of the 22 unit titles in bold capital letters. A course overview is then laid out nicely in chart form over two pages with each of the unit headings in bold down the left of the page, and headings across the top of the page indicating Language Focus, Vocabulary, Topics (covered by the unit), and Revision for each unit. Individual units throughout the book are then graphically numbered and headed, with the focus of the unit, and vocabulary to be used, prominently displayed at the top of the first page. This leaves no doubt as to the aims of each particular lesson. The different sections within each unit are also highlighted by colourful subheadings neatly seperating one from the other. The photographs and drawings are up-to-date and interesting, and in a lot of cases cleverly activate the readers schema, inviting the student to read on. The coursebook comes in a series of three levels - Elementary, Pre-intermediate and Intermediate. These books can be used in sequence or independently depending on the course timeframe. Each level provides between 72 and 100 hours of classwork. The Intermediate level consists of a class book, personal study workbook, teacher's book, class cassette set, personal study cassette and personal study CD. Although not essential, the personal study workbook, study cassette and CD are valuable additions to a student's resources, providing many more hours of development if the student is so motivated.. There is a very helpful grammar reference section at the back of the classsbook which covers each point in much greater detail, unit by unit. A tapescript, list of irregular verbs and complete list of phonetic symbols and examples, are also available to the student at the back of the classbook. These are laid out clearly as individual points and are written in simple, easily understood language. The book covers a wide range of topics which are all relevant to the everyday life of most people. This makes the course interesting and stimulating as students are challenged to think about common daily situations while simultaneously learning English grammar and vocabulary. The units all possess a similar theme, however, they are not linked which allows teachers to use the units in any order they choose to. The general nature of the topics, eg. sports, shopping, and employment, makes this book suitable for use in practically any culture, although, the content does have a bias towards developed countries. Examples of different cultures are also used in many of the exercises such as "Weddings around the world" in unit 9, page 63. The authors have also gone to great lengths to avoid stereotypes by using photographs of people from many different cultures and of both men and women in various roles and jobs that might once have been conidered gender specific. The grammar coverage in True to Life is adequate for an elementary learner with at least one different point being studied in each of the 22 units, supported by a more comprehensive explanation of each point at the back of the book. In many units students are asked to express their own ideas, provide examples from personal experiences or to describe life in their own countries. These thought provoking introductions are always followed by twelve to fifteen related exercises which are broken up into three sections. The unit ends with two or three exercises revising a previously studied unit. To avoid repetition and boredom, different exercise formats are employed in each unit adding variety to the lessons. From the course overview at the beginning to the grammar reference section at the end, the layout of this book invites the learner to read and therefore learn english. The topics covered in each unit are relevant and interesting conversation subjects for all adults. For this reason student motivation to learn is practically guaranteed. The learners are given the opportunity to participate and contribute their own life experiences creating an authentic learning experience. I believe that this coursebook is an excellent resource for teaching english to adult learners as a second language.

Reaching the unreachable, teaching the unteachable!.......1996-08-25
Wood and Algozzine unite the perspectives of researchers and successful teachers of at-risk students to provide the reader with a broad perspective of the high-rish reader.
The text discusses current research into at-risk readers, including their characteristics, how they are best assessed, and ways to reach and motivate these learners.
I'd call it a definite must-read for any K-12 teacher, especially teachers of reading!
Book Description
The author describes the ways in which workplace literacy programs can use a creative learner-centered approach to facilitate language learning through problem posing and critical thinking. By using learners' own experiences as the basis for the curriculum in a critical approach to literacy, educators can provide a common ground for adults of differing language backgrounds and learning styles to better use their literacy skills in a workplace culture. Additionally, the book details the ways in which educators can help workers learn to negotiate the environment of their workplace and to use their communicative skills outside of work.
