The Best Language Acquisition Bang for the Buck.......2007-05-12
The Living Language grammar series books are excellent adjuncts to regular college or high school language texts or on their own for one familiar with the language acquisition process. For $10-$20 (including grammar book, 3 CD's, and dictionary) complete bought at Amazon, anyone can afford to begin really learning another language (French and Spanish in my case). REMEMBER: Search by the ISBN# for the best prices. Since repetition or practice on a DAILY basis is key to slowly picking up another language, the lightweight, portable paperback Living Language books provide the key to practicing your new language anywhere you happen to be sitting for a few minutes. The lessons are short, concise and quite accurate. The Living Language grammar lessons are arranged in LOGICAL order after the immersion style lessons, which are excellent for de-stressing and taking the fear from learning new and generally unfamiliar foreign language grammar styles. Exercises are included with each grammar lesson. There is vocabulary building and there is more than one word/phrase given for most different meanings which is one of the keys to creating neural net pathways in memory for holding onto a new language, it's idioms, colloquialisms, etc.
Overall the Living Language series in any language offered is KEY to picking up a new language providing ready access to spot practice sessions of short duration to match our short-term opportunities for practice in very busy modern life. Enjoy!!!
Native language speakers generally recommend expensive programs like Rosetta Stone. However, Living Language provides language learning access to the average citizen.

french language course.......2007-01-19
I had hoped to be able to use the course while driving around. However the course is very dependent upon the printed material which makes it useless for what I intended.
Not good for 'virgin' learners.......2006-12-25
I bought this french lesson kit 3 years ago, before a trip to France. I didnt know any french whatsoever, never had a class, watched a movie, nothing. Thinking back, I think the package said "beginner to intermediate". I consider myself a quick study and thought it'd be perfect.
I had a difficult time learning. And it wasnt until a few years later (now) that I understand why I wasnt learning anything. This kit is designed to learn by memorization. It doesnt focus on structure. It gives you page after page of "everyday" sentences, then has vocab at the end. But it doesnt explain HOW the french language works. So you're memorizing and then you quickly forget. It does have a lil something about the etre and avoir. But thats it. It doesnt explain things like inversion, but we're supposed to memorize it??
With that said, this is a GREAT book for intermediate level. It is excellent for honing your pronunciation skills, the listening CDs go on for HOURS. If you've had at least ONE semester of french, then this is perfect for you. Because thats when you already have an understanding of the language, and you're more focused on expanding your vocab and pronunciation/speaking. This kit is PERFECT for that.
French for Okies.......2006-11-06
Starting a new language as a 40-something is no small undertaking. This package is very entreatable because of its logical progression through the mechanics of the language and because its example recordings are clear (on three CDs). I would recommend this product to anybody wanting to make a serious effort at a new language.
excellent.......2006-03-14
The book I have received is perfect. This was the first time I have bought second hand products via internet and I am really satisfied with that!

Customer Reviews:
Living Language course rules!.......2006-12-23
I've used Living Language courses since high school. My opinion is that they are overall the finest way to be introduced to a foreign language.
They use sentences grouped by grammatical function so that one learns (unconsciously) the grammar along with the vocabulary. There also is supplementary grammar if one wants to dig more into the machinery of the language.
I still benefit from having had my first introduction to Spanish from these courses. Now, having decided to review my univerisity French, I find this is still the finest CD on learning basic French.
Recommended.
A good tool for those with some background in French.......2006-01-09
I have been using Beyond the Basics French for about a week and I've found it very useful--it is definitely worth the time and money. It is not for someone with no background (hence, their "The Basics" I'm guessing). In grad school I had twelve hours or French (six studying abroad in France) and this course has been not only a good review but has built my vocab and, thank god, explained some grammatical/idiomatic stuff that I'm sure we covered in class but that didn't quite click with me b/c I'm not wonderfully adept at learning a new language.
If you've had at least 101-102 French, you should be fine with this. My only complaint is that some conversations aren't spoken slowly enough for me, but putting this on your iPod or mp3 makes it easy to back up a little be as often as you need to.
If you don't have a great intro/intermediate French dictionary, Harper Collins' French Beginner's Dictionary is the best I've found.

Customer Reviews:
It's possible to sound almost like a native!.......2006-05-10
Although I had Spanish in HS, I perfected my accent and grammar through daily usage abroad. When I started learning French, I had a spanish accent. HOWEVER, after diligently studying, listening, and imitating the cds (or cassettes) of this program, non-natives said my accent was great! But I have fooled native speakers as well...they really thought that I was from some francophone country! Grammatically, I thought this book was just right for "serious" beginners. Also, the little phrases found in the lessons are some of the phrases we use daily in English! The price is great for the info it contains...I have recommended it to a few of my "self-starter" friends and students. They've made excellent progress in pronunciation and forming simple, grammatically correct sentences!
Useful addition to your studies.......2005-07-23
This course is quite cheap and at first seemingly very straightforward and bland, but don't be fooled, as you progress in your French studies - be that through a language school or simply self tuition - you will come to realise that this little package is in fact a highly valuable resource that you can re-visit time and time again.
If you stick with this until the end of the course book.......2005-06-05
you *can* get a working knowledge of the French language.
I wouldn't recommend the Living Language series as the be all and end all of language instruction. This is a definite beginner/refresher course, designed to familiarize the person with basic everyday expressions, the alphabet, numbers, cognates (words that are similar in French and English), and so on.
The main point of language instruction is memorization - something we all had to do in elementary school all those years ago. I understand the majority of the reviewers' gripe about the series not putting what you've learned to use. I echo that sentiment in wishing that this series would include more exercises other than match this expression with the correct answer.
It may seem a bit empty to just have a native speaker reading off a list of the alphabet, numbers, and everything else in the course book but to hear a native speaker pronouncing the language is key. If you can pick up from that person the way words in that language are pronounced, chances are pretty good that you can be understood by native speakers when you do your own pronounciation.
Language instruction is different for everyone. If you have the time and the money, perhaps a course at the local community college will do (although those tend to be immersion courses - where the instructor starts right in with the language whether you understand it or not) or you could go to the local French society for some classes. In Philadelphia, we are fortunate to have the Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie that offers French language courses. They are a bit expensive (for members and non-members) but the teachers are directly from France. Can't beat that!
Treat the Living Language series as a primer for more in-depth language instruction.
There are many ways to learn a new language.......2004-07-04
Different people might require different methods for learning a new language. This method contains 40 lessons and 3 CD's. You can listen to the tapes while reading the book at the same time. Therefore, it is not a course you can take only listening on your way to work. You do need the book. Nevertheless, it is, at least for myself, a much better approach than other methods that say that you don't need any book. Considering the price, it is a bargain.
Useless.......2003-07-23
The "lessons" in this package are simply lists of words and phrases. Some of these words are in boldface, the CDs contain those words - nothing more - nothing less.
The learning approach taken is to memorize without applying the knowledge in any context. If you have a fantastic memory combined with a lot of patience, you migh actually learn to understand some french by this package, but otherwise there are many better alternatives.
The Pimsleur products are exceptional quality but expensive. For a more hi-tech approach the "Learn to speak" series by The learning company may be appropriate.

Great review of French language.......2003-06-25
This set is wonderful. Not only do you get 4 cassettes (90 minutes each), you also receive a book with the exact dialogue that is in the tape with translations and cultural notes. It is a very well-rounded program that is presented. It was perfect for someone like me who needed a brush up on my French.
There are 20 themed lessons (tape and book). There is also a section on grammar and verb conjugation in allt eh differnet tenses in the back of the booklet.
This is not for beginners but for those who want a brush up on the French language. It uses dialogue for practical usage should one have to go to France to communicate with the locals.
Great for a review or conversational practice.......2002-02-04
This would be great for a review for someone wanting to brush up dusty French skills. The recordings are great, and match the text, which gives the French dialogues along with colloquial English translations. The grammar sections of each chapter cover the recorded dialogues very well, and give good examples (which are in the text and on the recordings after the dialogues), but the examples and explanations are very brief. There are a few exercises at the end of each chapter - good for a review quiz, but not so good for learning drills, etc. I give it four stars not because I don't think it's a fine course, but because it should state more clearly what it is in the title. It is advanced conversational French practice, not a complete advanced French course.

Customer Reviews:
This set has given me confidence in speaking french........2002-01-16
Being a francophile, I have always wanted to really learn to speak and understand french. I had one semester of college french and thought it was impossible. But this book and the CDs that came with it really helped me to learn a great deal of french in an enjoyable way. With this set and a CD-Rom on pronunciation that I'm using, I no longer find it difficult to pronounce certain tricky french sounds and I now have confidence speaking basic sentences to french speakers. I have been complimented on my "good accent" on quite a few occasions. I can also understand many phrases and simple sentences when I watch french films now - which also boosts my confidence. The book does not explicitly teach grammar, and you learn it naturally through repeated listening and speaking. One difficiency of this set is that there isn't any listening comprehension exercises, which is a minor disappointment. Also, I find it helpful to use this set in conjuction with some exercise booklets and grammar books. In summary, you will not be fluent in french after completing this set, but you will be in pretty good shape doing things like ordering tickets, asking for directions (and giving them too), making purchases, etc. I liked this set well enough that I have ordered its sequal - "advanced french"!
A definite help for pronunciation and understanding!.......2001-05-05
As a total beginner to French, this CD really helped me get a grasp of the sounds and how to make them. I was able to learn basic french and be able to speak it so the french people I spoke with were able to understand me perfectly. I was able to learn the basics so that I could travel in france by myself without addressing the natives with any english (the french HATE that!) Though my vocabulary was limited, the cds helped me learn to hear what the native speakers were saying so that I could understand them as well which helped me pick up more french on my own. I only spent 2 weeks in france, but I was complimented on my good accent on several occasions. I even translated a bit for another american who didn't know any french! There is lots of repetition on the CD, so this is an excellent tool for beginners to start with. I begins with vocabulary lists, then moves on to simple sentence constructions and builds on them gradually, so you know what you are saying. Must be used in conjunction with the book, however. I spent about 15 minutes in the evening with the book, and listened to the CD on my way to and from work the next day (approx. 30 minutes each way, so lots of vocal practice). I only got a little less than 1/2 through all the lessons, but it was still an enormous help. Highly recommended! It really added an extra dimension to my travel!
Improve your French Accent . . ........2000-12-17
The "Living Language Complete Courses: Compact Disc Edition" are great to use in your car CD player or Discman. These CDs are available in French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Japanese. The "French Complete Course" is very basic instruction: the repeat-after-me words and phrases that one learns in a high school or university language lab during the first year or two of study. A small coursebook comes with the three CD set that has the transcript of the spoken material on the CDs, which is only in French. There are forty "lessons" in all; many of these lessons include translations of the French words and phrases, and there are some short quizzes you can take. There is also a small French-English/English-French dictionary in the set, and it has over 15,000 words in tiny print.
This language course on CDs is not an intensive immersion-type instruction in French. However, it is the best way to form and improve on your French accent and sentence intonation. French is a difficult language to pronounce correctly and repeated drills are necessary. So if you are not in France, or another French-speaking country, and you have no one with whom to practice speaking French on a regular basis, these French language CDs will help you gain or regain confidence in your conversational skills. This boxed set makes a nice gift for someone who is planning a trip to France. (Living Language also makes audio cassettes in the languages mentioned above plus Hebrew, Portuguese, Russian, Hungarian, Korean, Polish, Mandarin, Czech, Arabic, and American English.)
Repetitious lists of phrases.......2000-04-05
This book encompasses a good range of vocabulary, but consists of a person reading phrase after phrase after phrase, without translation (making it nearly useless for a beginner who wants to learn in his/her car), and read more slowly than actual French speakers speak. If you want to drill, drill, drill with the accompanying book in your hand, this is for you! If you want to learn French as it is spoken, look elsewhere. In my opinion, this course is a waste of money.
Living Language French Complete Course.......2000-03-07
I feel this book, used in conjunction with the CD, was organized to make it easy for a beginning french student. It repeats expressions and words in different contexts which truly helps the learning process. Later on in the book I found it offered more ways of saying the same thing than I cared to learn.

Nothing Special.......2007-01-21
I bought this book to prepare for a year long exchange in Japan. Having no teacher and only a few months to study before departure, this was a fine book to get me started. However, once I arrived, I immediately came across better books.
This book is a good start as it introduces the reader to some basic phrases, has a section on hiragana and katakana, and is especially useful with the CD you can buy with it.
However, if you're serious about learning Japanese, I wouldn't recommend this book. It's taught in Romanji (Roman letters), which is good only as a time saver and might even hurt in the long run. Learning in Romanji is one of the biggest setbacks to speaking with a Japanese accent. It also teaches the particles all at once instead of little by little. This is frustrating, tedious, and the point when I stopped using this book. It also introduces no kanji, which again is fine (even recommended) if you're only looking for a little bit of starter Japanese.
It was a good book to get me on my feet and to start learning Japanese, but switching books was a really great move and if you're serious, there are many better books out there.
