Bring a magnifying glass...and smack the publisher upside the head with it........2007-10-07
This book is good. If you are new to Cinema4D, it will give you a solid foundation of modeling skills. Because of the way it is formatted it will require some patience and a magnifying glass to get the most out of it.
I think I have to blame the publisher on the flaws within this book. The publisher (Focal Press) almost ruins the book because the the screen shots are TOO small. If you can go to the library or book store first please look before buying. Let me give you an example that you can easily check if you go to a bookstore.
On page 88 the text talks about the sweep NURBS operation. The text says, "We need a torus object, a cube object, and a linear spline." Nowhere in the text are the settings. The settings are in the screenshots. I defy you to read the screenshots. I think they are TOO TINY.
This is not the only place where such difficulties occur.
I wonder if the German publisher made the book at a different size or format and the American publisher resized it.
This is a good book but be warned. It will take effort.
Disapointing.......2007-08-23
If you know anything about Cinema 4D you will be very disappointed. It is really a First time beginner's book. The only good thing is that it goes through different parts of the software, like rig animation and UVs.
What really bothered me is that the chapters are huge, and uses pages and pages to explaining little details. But as i said, if you are the real beginner, you will enjoy it.
Lost in translation.......2007-08-15
The things they have you build look really cool, but the big wrench in the works for this book is its sloppy, inaccurate translation to English. You really have to move through it super-slowly, watching for potential mistakes. Having said that, I did get through the first tutorial on modeling a G5 Mac, but only at a snail's pace because of the translation.
Another complaint -- they continually reference screen-shots that aren't on the same page, so for instance, they say "Do this, like in fig. 8.5", and fig. 8.5 is on the next page, while directly above the instructions is fig. 8.4. The whole book is like that, with the pictures lagging one or two pages behind the text.
If you're just getting started in C4D, I'd look elsewhere.
Cinema 4D 10 Workshop.......2007-07-10
Im a motion graphics designer and decided to upgrade my knowledge using 3D and found out that Cinema 4D is easy to use. I tried and downloaded several tutorials in the internet and most of them are very helpful and I learned the basics in Cinema 4D. However, there are some aspects of this tool that is quite hard to find in the web (advance topics)and so I decided to purchase a book.
I found this book and I was quite disappointed in several of its projects/tutorials. The steps are not well-written. Usually, most of them are shortcuts, it doesn't give you the step-by-step procedure on how to accomplish a task. Perhaps, if you're an advanced user of Cinema 4D you would understand it, but if you're a beginnner, then you would have a hard time accomplishing the projects.
Now Im planning to buy another cinema 4d book the one written by anne powers.I hope that this one would be really helpful and easy to understand.
almost satisfied.......2007-06-27
Although the tutorials are very good, they are very hard to follow, there are no numbered tutorials, they are made in paragraphs, so you find yourself reading an entire paragraph which at the end you already know.
Some important little details are sometimes forgotten so you spend a long time going back and experimenting until your result looks like the result in the book.

Book Description
While the last version of iMovie gave moviemakers the ability to capture and edit widescreen High Definition Video (HDV) from the new generation of camcorders, iMovie 6 is all about the ease of moviemaking itself. iMovie 6 includes five professionally designed themes with backgrounds, motion graphics, titles, and effects that act as building blocks for your projects. You can preview transitions and stunning new video effects--such as time-lapse video--in real time using the full screen. Or edit audio and add sound effects with a new built-in sound studio. For presenting your movie, Magic iDVD offers easy-to-use themes, including new widescreen options.
Whether you're a professional or an amateur moviemaker, this is amazing stuff. But if you want to learn the full capabilities of these applications, Apple documentation won't make the cut. Instead, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual is the ideal third-party authority that covers all of these changes through an objective lens. This witty and entertaining guide from celebrated author David Pogue details every step of iMovie 6 and iDVD production. The book shows you how to:
- Work on multiple iMovie projects at once and drag & drop clips among them
- Output your creation to a blog, its own web page, or as a video podcast with iWeb
- Use "Magic iMovie" to import your video and make a movie for you
- Integrate with other iLife programs to use songs, photos, and an original soundtrack
- And a whole lot more
From choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto DVDs, posting it online, or downloading it to an iPod, iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual zooms right in on the details in a clear, concise, and understandable manner. The book also provides a firm grounding in basic film technique so that the quality of your video won't rely entirely on magic.
Customer Reviews:
iMovie 6 & iDVD: The missing Manual.......2007-10-03
Having Missing Manuals 3 to 5 It is again most difficult to find what's new in Apples Version 6 amongst all the older information contained in the previously published "Manuals". If one was purchasing it for the first time it does a reasonable job.
Great Step by Step Guide.......2007-06-27
This book is a thoroughly attentive-to-detail manual that is true to it's name/concept: The manual that *should* have come in the box! It clearly walks you through every step, big and small as well as including sections on how to improve your filming, editing, and a concise Quicktime how-to.
I recommend reading the entire book before starting an iMovie/iDVD project but if you just can't wait (I couldn't-- I read as I went), I recommend reading Appendix B (pg. 461) which is "Troubleshooting" early on . It includes *many* crucial tips from being sure to format your external HD to Mac OS Extended (if saving on an ext. HD) to switching the factory-setting 12-bit audio on your digital video camera to 16-bit to common 'glitches' while importing, working with or exporting footage.
The other great benefit of this book is it explains the various little 'tricks' for more complicated tasks or for things that are hinky and need a little fiddling to work. One ex.: You use the new iMovie 6 themes w/in iMovie (Pass Through, especially, is slick/professional-looking!) and are trying to use a *trimmed* clip w/in the theme. iMovie doesn't understand starting it where you trimmed because it keeps the trimmed portion of the clip hidden but still there so the undesirable portion of your clip is shown in the intro theme instead. This book explains in detail how to save it to Quicktime and re-import the new *permanently* trimmed clip to use w/ no problems in your themed intro!
This book also spells out the key differences in iMovie 6 vs. previous versions. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are looking to edit home movie footage (or other) using iMovie (& iDVD) and don't have your own personal Mac Genius in your household. :-)
This book saved my life... in a roundabout way.......2007-05-14
I recently purchased a Mac and edited my first film - a short documentary - on iMovie.
I had never used iMovie before and a good friend recommended this book and I couldn't have been more pleased. I haven't encountered a problem yet that this book hasn't addressed.
Well-written, simple and practical.
A great resource. Worth your time and money.
One of the best "how to" manuals I've bought.......2007-04-19
I have to admit that I was skeptical when I saw that this was a textbook for an introductory filmmaking class but it's an awesome book. It strikes just the right tone and is basically a short course in filming, editing and distributing (dvd, web, email) movies. Well done.
Quite simply-THE BEST.......2007-04-03
Simple and darn articulate. Im not a tech person in any sense of the way, Mr Pogue has outdone himself. He indeed has made understanding imovie very simple. Highly recommended if you are just starting out or if you wish to brush up on the latest version of Imovie

Customer Reviews:
For use by "the initiated".......2007-02-18
While Gerald & Co's book may look like a good introduction to Oracle's manufacturing & supply chain management modules, it will make little sense to those who have never used the system or don't have access to it. Because I had three years of hands-on experience with Oracle's E-Business Suite, the book is useful and I'm giving it a 3-star rating.
Things that Gerald & Co. could have done better: more illustrations of what they write about. There are many "bells and whistles" in the software, but the book doesn't have enough "screen shots" to show you where they're located on an Oracle "form." I'm not satisfied with the case study, which they have placed in chapter 22. There are no screen shots there either.
Gerald & Co. are assuming you can navigate and know a lot of the Oracle lingo. If you are new to this, don't expect to learn it from this book. The audiences for the book are intermediate and advanced users.
One could also regard this as a reference book. Use it to answer problems you encounter while using the product or better understand what's going on. In this context, I'd rate it 3 stars, too.
A Good Introduction.......2006-11-03
This book is for users of Oracle Manufacturing and has the end-user in mind Definately not for the the technical minded, site specific Installs and for those who are used to Technical Reference manuals

Excellent Oracle reference tool.......2005-10-17
I was part of the Oracle implementation team at our company, and I have found this book to be a useful tool for myself in the year since implementation as we continue to explore new functionalities. It is also a useful tool for the application users to learn how Oracle works. In fact, I not only purchased this book for myself, but I have purchased copies for several other people in the company. I refer to it all the time.
Good Book for the beginners.......2005-08-24
This book is very useful for the beginners as well those who want to brush up their knowledge on oracle applications release 11i.
Mostly it covers all Manufacturing & Distribution modules. Financial modules are not covered in this book. I was planning to buy a book and searching for it and finally ended up in buying a very useful book.
Main drawback is not much of screen captures displayed. So if you want to better understand you have to read it by sitting in front of applications screen and switching the forms as you read.
Overall the book is worth having it.

Book Description
Between the classic films of Walt Disney in the 1940s and the televised cartoon revolution of the 1960s was a critical period in the history of animation. Amid Amidi, of the influential Animation Blast magazine and CartoonBrew blog, charts the evolution of the modern style in animation, which largely discarded the "lifelike" aesthetic for a more graphic and often abstract approach. Abundantly found in commercials, industrial and educational films, fair and expo infotainment, and more, this quickly popular cartoon modernism shared much with the painting and graphic design movements of the era. Showcasing hundreds of rare and forgotten sketches, model boards, cels, and film stills, Cartoon Modern is a thoroughly researched, eye-popping, and delightful account of a vital decade of animation design.
Customer Reviews:
Cool, Fun and Essential.......2007-07-17
This book covers a vital an oft-neglected period in animation history. When I first laid eyes upon it, in a bookstore, I think I audibly gasped. It is that beautiful. Do not hesitate to purchase this book, which incidentally, won the Theatre Library Association Award for outstanding book in the area of film or broadcasting. Hopefully, there'll be a sequel.
Superlative.......2007-06-08
If you're an animation buff, you won't want to miss Amid Amidi's "Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in 1950s Animation". Lushly paged, and densely packed with generous, colorful, brightly saturated illustrations, "Cartoon Modern" is the cel animation cartoon fan's dream come true - the kind of volume you'd find in a favorites bin in a dream and try to take out into the waking world with you! Amid Amidi is clearly another one of us toon fangeeks: he eagerly sifts through tons of studio, production and biographical information but doesn't skimp on small details only another fangeek would enjoy - intriguing factoids and behind-the-scenes animator gossip relevant to the period abound throughout this thick, heavy book. You will never tire of the clippings, sketches, layouts, articles and character designs. Far from limited to the gorgeous coffeetable book it resembles - don't be fooled by its size and stylish appearance! - "Cartoon Modern" is an authoritative tour of one of American animation's most important creative periods. I personally look forward to more animation books from Amidi, and I hope he will someday take a literary look at the animation of the classic, cartoon modern-influenced 1969-1976 period of PBS's "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company". As a generous portion of "Cartoon Modern" concerns the works of animators John and Faith Hubley, and the Hubley Studios generated a good 40-50% of the animation for both shows, such a book may not be far from the realm of possibility. Superlative.
More than Disney...........2007-04-19
We had forgotten how much treasured animation was created during this very stylistic era in film history.
Most importantly, the book deserves a publishing prize simply for the design of the text. Absolutely beautiful... flawlessly designed... with quality binding and printing that should last for a century to come.
We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and class within these covers, and we are pleased to highly recommend this text for the most discriminating animation libraries.
Cartoon Modern.......2007-03-19
Absolutly wonderful visuals, with OK text. Text suffers from almost no acknowlegement of foriegn animation that preceded and drove the U.S. animation design, but still very informationl and a good referenxce book.
Great Book.......2007-01-22
I think this book is a nice purchase. It has great visual reference for cartoon styles and is really easy to brouse through as each "animation studio" has its own chapter. Two other people from my work purchased the book as well, and seem to like it too!

The most experienced professionals in any field are the first ones to say there is always more to learn. Often, the best way to learn is to be a fly on the wall while watching a peer. Chris and Trish Meyer have given After Effects users a unique and wonderful opportunity in After Effects in Production, allowing us to look over the shoulders of some of the best motion-graphics designers in the business and watch and learn as they go through the creative process. Unlike the fly on the wall, though, we have the chance to occasionally put down the book and practice what's been learned.
In the tutorials section, the authors break down the process of creating broadcast-quality motion graphics into a dozen step-by-step tutorials. Each tutorial focuses on or introduces a particular feature, and often builds on features that were introduced in a previous tutorial. The enclosed CD-ROM includes all 12 project and media files (and the final rendered movies), giving the reader the chance to build the project from scratch or carefully dissect a project that's already built.
Case Studies, a far smaller section of the book (but equal in value to the rest), explores, breaks down, and dissects After Effects projects that are on the air or on the Web, including work from such studios as Belief, ATTIK, and Curious Pictures. While less step-by-step oriented, one gets the chance to learn why each project was handled the way it was, rather than how.
As an added bonus, the CD-ROM includes numerous free plug-ins from such vendors as Pinnacle, Media 100, Boris, Trapcode, and the Foundry for both Mac and Windows versions of After Effects. There's also plenty of bonus material to read and sift through in the form of PDF files--additional tutorials, tips and tricks, and project templates.
After Effects in Production is a must-have book for any user who intends to grow into a serious designer, or for the serious designer who simply intends to keep on growing. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
"By showcasing a variety of artistic techniques, After Effects in Production is a natural follow-up to Creating Motion Graphics." - Steve Kilisky, Senior Product Manager, Adobe After Effects
Take your After Effects skills to a new level! Twelve step-by-step tutorials, designed by industry professionals, explore a variety of approaches as they teach useful design concepts and production tricks. The tutorials highlight the significant new features introduced in After Effects 5.0 - including 3D space, cameras, lights, parenting, and expressions. Each carefully structured project presents the "why" behind the steps, so you can adapt these techniques to your own motion graphics work. Many of the projects contain timeless concepts that can also be executed in After Effects 4.1, so that the maximum number of users can learn to master this industry-standard application.
After Effects in Production also contains six case studies of commercial projects created by award-winning studios such as ATTIK, Belief, Curious Pictures, The Diecks Group, Fido, and the authors' own studio, CyberMotion. These detail the integration of After Effects, 3D programs, live action, and a variety of animation techniques, revealing the artistic concepts behind the spots as well as the inventive techniques used to execute them. The enclosed CD contains QuickTime movies of each of the final animations, allowing you to step through them frame-by-frame so you can examine them in detail.
Topics include: · Mastering the new 3D space features, including lights, cameras, and orientation · Employing parenting, precomposing, and expressions to group layers · Refining animations with keyframe assistants, expressions, and velocity curves · Universal design concepts that can be applied to any version of After Effects
The CD-ROM contains a tryout version of Adobe After Effects 5.0 (Mac or Windows), all projects and sources, QuickTime movies of finished tutorials and case studies, and free plug-ins.

good resource.......2007-01-10
i needed this book for school, and it did the job i learned tons of effect tricks through this book.
absolutely useful and worthwhile.......2006-05-28
if motion graphics is your thing, this is a fantastic resource. Nobody more clearly explains the basic concepts of layering, nesting, timelines, footage, transformations, masks, precomposing, stencils, track mattes, transfer modes, keyframes, rendering, resolutions, plugins, working with audio, and much more.
The "Creating Motion Graphics with AE", and "After Effects in Production" must be considered the best of the best, even for those who may be using other products such as Apple Motion, or Combustion, etc.
Highly recommended, as is having plenty of time and some decent hardware.
The tutorials are a blast ! Go thru them all (this takes awhile folks) and you begin to get the idea....motion graphics is fun !!!
After Effects in Production: A Companion for Creating Motion Graphics .......2006-01-15
This is an excellent resource for After Effects. The "Meyers" Have always produced great learning materials and this is another proof positive of that.
"Professional" learning experience.......2005-04-24
After I bought after effects the software had little interest for me. I never new that broadcasting and such could be such fun. Did a lot of editing for animation studies with this tool. Looking forward to buy the next book when I'm finish with this. Recommended for advance users.
Differences between First and Second editions.......2004-12-19
Note from the authors: The first edition of After Effects in Production (2001, ISBN 1578200776) is now out of print. It was written for AE4.1/5.0, and the CD shipped with free plug-ins for OS9 and Windows.
The second edition is being printed now (December 2004) and has been updated for AE6.5, with free plug-ins for OS X and Windows. The 12 tutorials are essentially the same but where applicable they have been updated to use the latest working practices and keyboard shortcuts. For instance, we use the new Brush tool instead of the Vector Paint effect and the new Text tool instead of the Path Text effect. Also, the motion tracker was redesigned by Adobe for AE 6 so the motion tracking chapter was also overhauled. The 6 Case Studies are essentially unchanged.
The 2nd edition includes a DVD with a Tryout version of After Effects 6.5, along with additional free full-resolution footage from Artbeats and 12 Inch Design that was not included on the original CD.
To quickly locate the 2nd edition on Amazon, search for its ISBN number - "1578202647".
Hope that helps clarify the differences between the two editions.

Customer Reviews:
Great School Resource .......2007-02-19
Great resource for designers who deal with the print aspect of thier projects. Good material to read through and very helpful.
Not what I'd expected........2007-01-29
This book wasn't what I'd expected from the reviews. It is largely a reference guide and less of a learning resource. Definitions are presented clearly, but then the application of things wasn't fully explained. For someone new to print publishing, this isn't a 'how-to' guide. It's more of a reference material and to discover new things about print publishing you may not have known about. I would recommend this tentatively to anyone who wants to bulk up their reference library on print publishing, but wouldn't recommend it to a absolute beginner wanting to know more about print publishing.
Information a plus.......2007-01-09
Great in detail book for Graphic Communications I used it in one of my classes. Learned a great deal in it. Thanks
Great Resource.......2006-08-07
The reality is that lots of graphic designers don't have formal design training, which can result in a problematic lack of production and printing knowledge. This book is easy to read (in a day), thoughtfully illustratrated, and covers the most important productino and printing issues that a designer should be aware of.
The book is really good about inustructing the designer on what they should know and then giving the reader a list of questions/issues to discuss with their printer when the matter is outside the domain of the designer. Great stuff!
New to print? You need this book.......2006-03-06
I know a teeny tiny bit of print. Spot colours - hmm I did know that one, but since I don't do much print (or haven't til this year) I was always at a loss when it came ready for the printer. This book is an essential guide for the non print designer.
Terms, project proofing, even what a colour bar is (you know that strip of colour on the prepress and press proofs?) - it's all covered. There is a world of difference between making something for screen and print. If you have ever had someone ask to have a business card made, or a more complex print piece, and you usually export a 300 dpi TIFF and hope for the best this book helps take you further. Every introductory design course, not just a print course, should be covering this book to ensure that designers are well versed in all the verbage, processes and production issues that print demands.
A great chapter in this book covers project management which most will not think of to be in a book like this. The added value of having this chapter allows one who is not familiar with print to understand ones responsibilities to the client, the printer and themselves. Do not waste time creating something the client may love and the printer will not deliver - at your quoted budget anyway. It all intertwines and knowing what questions to ask is the key to a better project. And don't forget that File Checkoff List.

Absolutely Great!.......2007-08-01
This book is a gem. It is a treasure trove of detailed photographs of the wonderful costumes created by Trisha Biggar.
If you are a costume player or just a costume historian, you will find this book a marvel. This is one of the best books I've ever seen as a record of a movie of any kind.
a MUST HAVE book for every Starswars fan !.......2007-03-30
Absolutely wonderful !
Fantastic pictures, you will shock all your Starwars friends showing it !
And Italian fans will recognize all pics taken at italian movies' locations: Como Lake (Villa Balbianello) where the Padme&Anakin wedding cerimony was celebrated, and Lenno village.
A MUST HAVE book for every Starwars Fans.
Costume Haute Couture..........2007-02-23
I picked this book up at a local bookstore for a whopping $5.00 . I enjoyed the movies, but they definitely aren't at the top of my favorites list. This book appealed to me purely for the fashion, costume, and design aspects. And it delivers a beautiful display for all those things. I actually found myself reading the book (usually I just dissect the pictures and draw inspiration that way), and found it to be well written as well. The text, gives insight into how a large scale costuming production works for theatrical purposes. It illustrates all of the dynamics of organizing such a production from start to finish. I imagine this would be a good read for someone interested in the theatrical costuming field. Besides that, it is a wonderful coffee table book , or uber bible of clothes for the "Con" participant. Surely worth ten times what I paid!
Simply breathtaking!.......2007-02-09
I finally got this book - now I don't know why I waited! Totally worth it!
Anyone who is a fan of Star Wars and even a casual fan of costumes will truly enjoy this book. The book is filled with exquisitely detailed photos and descriptions of all of the costumes from Eps 1-3, and many from Eps 4-6, but the focus is really on the costumes that dominated the last 3 films - those of Amidala/Padmé, the Emperor, Bail Organa, Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc. Some of the most creative details are illustrated on the numerous characters that only appear briefly at the senate meetings, and their attire reflects their status in society as well as the environment from which they come. There are close-ups of the detailed beadwork, stitching, tooled leather and fabrics used to create each work of art. There is also a visual reference at the back of the book with images of every Star Wars costume, and there are a few foldout pages as well showing the different styled robes and gowns for some of the main characters. The next best thing would be to touch the fabric! (Supposedly you can do that in the limited edition boxed version - complete with fabric samples).
Several character illustrations by Iain McCaig, Dermot Power, and others are shown - which is amazing to see the concept art of the character with their wardrobe, then the final masterpiece by Trisha Biggar.
A must for anyone in love with Star Wars and the imaginative design that set the stage for each character.
Tremendous book.......2007-01-09
Probably one of the five or ten best Star Wars books, up there with the 'Art of' books from the Classic trilogy. This is a terrific look at Trisha Biggar's amazing work, and gets into exquisite detail on many of the sumptuous costumes from the prequels. Whether you loved or hated the films, you must admit, the outfits were out of this world, and this book chronicles all that work and effort. Well worth a purchase.

Book Description
"... a book that needs to be on every motion graphic designer's shelf."
—Scott Kelby, President, National Association of Photoshop Professionals
Author Jeff Foster appeared on the DV Guys, a weekly radio show devoted to DV professionals and enthusiasts, for a LIVE online interview on Thursday, June 17, 2004. If you missed it, you can still listen to their archive.
If you're in the business of motion graphics or desktop digital video production, you know that Adobe's After Effects and Photoshop are two of the most indispensable content creation tools. More integrated than ever before, the world's number-one compositing and image-editing programs can be used in tandem to create quality work at a relatively low cost. But it takes years of experience to figure out how to get the most out of this remarkable duo.
With After Effects and Photoshop: Animation and Production Effects for DV and Film, graphics guru Jeff Foster has created the first book devoted to showing how you can use these two programs together to produce animations and effects on the desktop. This practical guide focuses exclusively on techniques commonly used in the field as well as cutting-edge production tricks. These hands-on projects will demystify cool Hollywood effects and help you solve your daily challenges. And they'll inspire you to think more artistically when approaching your creations.
Inside, you'll discover pro techniques for motion graphics and video production, including how to:
- Add depth and realism to your animations by mimicking real motion
- Use exaggerated movements to enhance characterization
- Apply 3-D animation to 2-D images
- Remove background fodder with blue-screen garbage mattes
- Employ rotoscoping techniques for frame-by-frame retouching
- Construct realistic composites and scene locations using matte painting techniques
- Make movies from stills by simulating 3-D camera motion
- Utilize perspective, speed, and scale to create believable moving objects
- Produce realistic special effects such as noise, clouds, and smoke
- Practice imaginative motion titling effects that grab people's attention
- Develop professional scene transitions using 3-D layer animations
- And much more!

a good Book for discover the tricks!!.......2007-01-09

Tired of the usual "Blah, Blah, Blah" in computer books? FINALLY - somone is listening to the needs of graphics professionals and students wanting to learn tips and tricks for doing these effects and animations! Foster not only shows you HOW to do these techniques, but more importantly, WHY! I have found this book indespensible in my advancement way beyond the basic tools and functional training of other After Effects books. If you want to learn animation or do any kind of special effects on your own, then get this book NOW!
extremely useful.......2006-03-06
have bought many books on after effect and photoshop.
This is so far the best ever. Easy to use, easy to understand.
Not for the complete beginner..........2005-12-21
I have to say that you MUST need a solid undertanding or at least the basics of After Effects before getting this book. Also, there are not many figures to ilustrate the projects in an easy way.
Get the book if you have good knoledge of After Effects.
Book Could have been SOOOO Good............2005-10-11
This book seemed to cover all the topics I wanted to get me in to being able to doing some of the things that I wanted to do right away with 3-D photo montages and working in 3-D space with AE and Photoshop but the book skips far too many steps and assumes you can read minds and know the "in-between" steps to get from one set of instructions to the next. I would not recommend this book to any one who does not have a very good grasp of AE. If you know AE very well then this may be the book for you. As for me I guess I'll just have to go back to my Total Training DVD's but I was hoping to get up and running a little quicker.

Customer Reviews:
Exceeds Expectations.......2007-10-16
Wow! This book contains a wealth of knowledge about storyboarding and character design that is essential reading for anyone who desires to work in the animation industry. Prepare to Board! is a surprisingly easy, clear and fun read with plenty of pictures to support the text.
Nancy Beiman explains the differences between live-action and animation storyboards, offers professional techniques for designing lively and interesting characters, and demonstrates how to properly pose, stage and compose a storyboard. She illustrates the basics to lay a strong foundation, then continues to build upon that information to push your work beyond the mediocre. More importantly, she ties in how story structure and character development work hand-in-hand to create believable and entertaining films. The interviews in the back of the book are also very insightful.
The great thing about this book is that everyone will learn something regardless of skill level- from inexperienced beginners to seasoned pros. The material in this book will definitely give you an edge in the industry and is an invaluable resource. There's a reason why Prepare to Board! has so many 5 star reviews!
very inspiring.......2007-09-26
Although I haven't read all the chapters of the book, I can tell you that I'm very enthusiastic about read all the book. The reason why I bought this book was because although I can draw well (I think), I got stuck trying to create my own characters and animations, but this book shows me a new way of thinking, and really inspired me to create situations, stories and new characters. It offers nice guidelines to create better characters and put this characters in the right situations or viceversa, create characters based on the story or situation.
A valuable resource.......2007-09-15
Nancy Beiman is a well-known figure within the world of animation, having been a long-time animator at Disney, Warner Bros. and elsewhere, and also having taught in a variety of contexts, including her current position at Rochester Institute of Technology. Anyone who knows Nancy fairly well understands three things about her: she is a very gifted artist, she has high expectations of excellence for her students, and she is very broadly knowledgeable about the arts, traditions of humor, and animation itself. Combine these characteristics with the fact that Beiman is one of the most accomplished female animators within the US industry, and you can understand why I was eager to see this book come to life.
Over the last year, I finally completed work on a production-related book, and during that time I consulted with Nancy on various topics. She told me about her own book and, knowing about her ecclectic background and broad knowledge base, I was eager to see how her project would be realized. What I found is pretty much what I expected, a book that introduces essential concepts, but enhances them with discussion of aesthetic issues and is grounded in an appreciation for the history of classical Hollywood animation, with breadth in examples from other animation practices.
So many animation students struggle with story and developing the cinematic aspects of their work, in order to tell their story visually. Beiman's book offers instruction in chapters devoted to the development of story, storyboarding, types of stories (situation driven, character driven, ways to manipulate the `real'), character development and design, scale and location. As the book's title suggests, a large portion of the text is devoted to storyboarding in various respects: sketches and working out roughs; story beats, sequences, and pacing; and visualizing a script, among other topics. She also focuses on refining characters and art direction, including the use of color. Finally, she addresses topics related to the presentation of storyboards and their use in the production process.
Beiman's writing will appeal to anyone from the beginning artist on up, as she writes in a colorful manner and uses a range of examples drawn from her own experience and her analysis of many films. Included in the appendix are interviews she conducted with A. Kendall O'Connor, T. Hee, and Ken Anderson, and the book itself is filled with quotations and short Q and As with the likes of Tex Avery and other well-known figures. Many illustrations--both instructive and humorous--enhance the book, adding extra appeal for the reader. A number of these images come from students Beiman has worked with through the years, attesting to her influence on many young artists.
Prepare to Board is highly recommended for libraries at institutions where production is taught, particularly at the high school and undergraduate levels, and for all artists wishing to learn more about character development, story, and boarding.
Absolutely Terrific.......2007-08-26
This is a very strong book.
When it comes to storyboarding and character design there is a ton of material to cover, yet this relatively short volume captures it beautifully. The writing is never digressive or self indulgent - from page one, it's down to business. At the same time it's very accessible, especially since the illustrations complement the text so simply and effectively. Often both negative and positive examples are compared, explaining not only what to do but what NOT to do. (Something I wish more art books would try!) Topping off the book is a series of interviews from some unimpeachable masters of story and character.
Perhaps what I love the most, though, is that the book isn't just about story and character, it's about marrying story and character. They are not discrete disciplines - the one can't shine without the other! Understanding how they harmonize is critical for any artist, and this guide imparts an intimate understanding of that harmony.
All told, there's a wealth of material to absorb here. Nancy Beiman makes it both engaging and straight-forward. Whether you want it for your nightstand, your bookshelf, or your drawing table, Prepare to Board is a great buy!
Loved it........2007-07-31
I am not an artist, so can't comment much on the core of the book (although, as a layman, I found the explainations extremely clear).
I LOVED the interviews with Ken Anderson, Ken O'Connor and T- Hee as well as the way they were illustrated (there were quite a few documents that I had never seen before).
