Blood Fever - On The Path To 007.......2007-10-10

Literary 007 fans are in for a real surprise with Charlie Higson's Blood Fever. A dark and intense story awaits readers and the result is thrilling and enjoyable. At first I was apprehensive about starting it. When I had obtained Higson's first novel, SilverFin, I had immediately jumped into it, excited and curious. With Blood Fever, I was worried that I would be slightly disappointed; that the success of SilverFin might have just been a one time deal. It turns out that I could not have been further wrong. Blood Fever is a fast-paced, exciting, well-crafted, and mature James Bond novel.

SilverFin started to clear up the many, many rumours that this new Young Bond series would only appeal to young readers or the Harry Potter crowd, but Blood Fever wipes the slate clean. This is a darker and tougher James Bond novel than anticipated. Where there were some decidedly cute aspects of SilverFin, such as the horse being called "Martini," Blood Fever is devoid of such moments. The maturity, both of Bond and overall, is much more pronounced in this story.

One way this new level of maturity is obtained is in the development of the characters. Many of them are standouts in this novel, starting first with the villain, Count Ugo Carnifex. Villains, both in the Bond novels and films, have to be above par to create an interesting enough challenge for Bond, and Carnifex meets the requirements. He is ruthless and cruel; Higson's characterization of this villain is full of details; and...of course, where would a good villain be without a well-designed and dangerous lair? An improvement over Lord Randolph Hellebore of the previous novel, SilverFin. The other obligatory character is the Bond girl--in this case, the determined and efficient Amy Goodenough. Again, as in the case of the villains, the improvement from SilverFin to Blood Fever is clearly evident. Amy is introduced early on in the story and Higson allows the character plenty of time to develop and become someone that readers actually care about. She is the perfect candidate to be the girl who needs rescuing. Her interaction with James is handled wonderfully and very believable for the reader.

The darkness of Blood Fever is accented by the violence, which seems to have been increased for this second novel. James Bond is much more agent 007 than Young Bond in Blood Fever. In SilverFin, he was unsure, but determined and not willing to give up. Even with those qualities, it was evident that this character was clearly no 007...yet. Blood Fever now takes James Bond on the path to 007. Even the first line, 'James Bond hated feeling trapped,' shows that this boy is restless and one that does not take the common path in life. He must know that there is an exit where ever he may be, and his real ambition is to be free. He realizes that he does not fit in with Eton, the so-called common path. This boy is different from the others. All of this essential information about the back round to this character is presented on the first page describing him alone (pg 15 UK first edition paperback).

One standout scene of Blood Fever (and one that was certainly anticipated before the release of the novel) is the torture sequence involving James Bond. The form of torture is the deadliest animal in the world: mosquitoes. As Ugo Carnifex says, 'they are a nuisance, aren't they?' The scene is written magnificently, from the lack of mutual respect between James Bond and Ugo Carnifex to the sense of hopelessness James feels after he is left alone. Blood drips from the uncountable bites on his body and the creatures are relentless and ruthless in their mass attack. Help eventually comes, but not after James experiences a world of agony and pain. In a way, this scene (which succeeds wonderfully) represents a transition from young Bond to the adult 007. Charlie Higson proves he can make a scene like this work very well. The violence is increased, but sex still remains very PG. Bond tries to resist Vendetta's uncontrollable attempts to kiss him, thinking the action to be embarrassing. He does however kiss her 'hard on the mouth' when trying to get a point across, but the idea of Amy as a girlfriend is 'nonsense' to him.

Do not resist this second Young Bond novel if you did of SilverFin because the idea seemed too childish or silly. Charlie Higson is an accomplished writer and his work on Blood Fever is definitely deserving of praise. This is the best kind of Bond novels--young or old. It grips you from the start and truly does not let go until the conclusion. The characterization is deep and rich, the settings described in detail, and the plot interesting and exciting. Equally as important, there is a point: Blood Fever continues young James Bond on the road to 007. Both James Bond and the readers are in for quite the journey.

Even more action and suspense..........2007-06-19

Thirteen year-old James Bond is pulled into another adventure. This time, James stumbles upon a dangerous secret society at his own school. When his teacher and some of his classmates decide to visit Sardinia over a break, James tags along. He has a nearly takes a fatal fall at their archeological dig site, and James suspects one of his professors. James then leaves his group to stay with his uncle who lives nearby. But danger soon follows, and James discovers a conspiracy involving the secret society, pirates, and a power-hungry monarch.

In this second Young Bond adventure, there is even more action and suspense. Blood Fever definitely has the feel of a true James Bond story. James gets captured, (mildly) tortured, and even has a girl to save. Higson has done a wonderful job of staying true to Bond's character, while making him a much more innocent young man. And the secondary characters are remarkably vivid and exciting. Both children and adults who love action and adventure will love this series.

I liked the story because I like action and adventure type books and this book is very good and once I started reading I couldn't stop. Another reason I liked the book is because it had some parts that were very sad witch quickly changed into anger.

IF you like action or adventure I would suggest you read Young Bond Book #3: Double or Die

Another exciting adventure for Young Bond.......2007-02-11

Once again, Charlie Higson has written an action packed adventure that will have tween readers talking! We purchased this one after reading Silverfin and it did not disappoint. The action is a little more intense in the sequel and young James attracts some female attention this time. (C'mon, moms - you knew it had to happen sooner or later!) Even so, it was still within reason for my 10 year old and his friends. We are looking forward to many more installments in the Young James Bond series.

Good resource.......2006-08-09

I have a 2 year old son and want to get him on the road to reading as quickly as possible...with the result of loving it. Studies show that by the age of 8, if boys are not shown how important reading is, they will just simply quit doing it, unless they have to. THis book will help you get good books in their hands and get them loving reading.

Some good suggstions, but not boy-centered.......2004-03-10

Some good recommendations, but I was hoping for more books that would provide great role models for my son. Instead I found many books that seemed to be aimed at teaching diversity - a worthy goal, but surely not the only goal for our sons. I was also disappointed by the number of books about boys with absent or downright rotten fathers.

It's easy today to find poor male role models - they seem to get media coverage at every turn. Ms Odean is right that boys face special challenges; one is being allowed to feel good about being boys and eventually being men. Our sons deserve better...

The lists provide a great start!.......2002-08-31

According to essay writer Bruce Brooks, he believes that society makes it hard for boys who like to read, especially as they get older. His interpretation is that if boys are reading, they are questioned as to why? and coaxed to engage in other things instead of reading. He doesn't see society treating girls this way when they are reading.

He also states that boys see athletic excellence as widely admired while the love of reading is not. The message to boys is that "real boys don't read."

The boys' manhood!
Along with her companion book "Great Books for Girls", author Kathleen Odean has compiled an impressive list of suggested reading for boys ages 2 to 14. Odean also feels that as young boys get older they lose their ability to express a wide range of emotions.

She says that "just the way girls are expanding into realms reserved for males, boys need to become competent in long undervalued realms such as creating a warm home, nurturing children and taking responsibility for relationships." Now, I like that statement!

Outstanding Guide.......2002-07-12

As a parent and school librarian, I consider this a great guide for boys (and girls). It has the books my son knew and loves--Hatchet, Redwall, Frindle, Matt Christopher--but, best of all, ones he didn't know--Weasel, Dog Friday, Dealing with Dragons, Confess-o-rama. I have to disagree with the review below. You can tell the author of Great Books for Boys is a librarian; her age ranges are right on target, and she gives useful, fairly long descriptions. There's nothing else like this available, so I'm glad this is so good, although I hope she'll bring out a new edition soon like Great Books for Girls has.

Misleading.......2002-06-01

First, I found the book to be valuable and it lists books that boys would benefit from by reading.

But the title "Great Books for Boys" is misleading. Even the introduction, which states that the criteria for selecting books was the books cover "topics that particularly appeal to boys" or they "capture the complexity of boys' lives," is misleading

I was expecting a book analogous to the author's "Great Books for Girls" which included a good number of books where the main character was a female role model. Unfortunately the present book includes relatively few books where the main character was a male role model.

The Book that Snatched my Breath Away.......2005-05-15

Books are like baskets, with sturdy sides and empty spaces in the centers to fill. It's rare to find a novel so well-crafted that its story fills the basket up to the brim, but I have. Coram Boy is one that shines because of its powerful story, life-like characters, and the many emotions portrayed throughout the tale.
Alexander is a rich, talented choirboy who spends his life enveloped in music. Thomas, his best friend, comes from a poorer family, but is also devoted to melodies. There is one difference: Thomas is free to become a musician, but Alex can only look forward to becoming the master of his huge mansion. When Thomas is invited to spend the summer at his friend's house, he discovers that Alex holds a great passion for Melissa, the maid's lovely daughter, while at the same time dislikes his father for not letting him follow his musical talent. However, none of them know that another person trails Melissa too: Meshak, the unloved son of a man who makes money out of selling babies to become slaves. To everybody's shock, Alex runs away from his father's grip to become a musician, and Melissa, barely a child herself, gives birth to his baby. The baby is handed over to the `slave-dealer' secretly, but Meshak snatches it away, and cares for his angel's child as if it were his own.
Eight years later, the child, called Aaron, is taken as the now famous Alexander Ashbrook's apprentice without knowing that they are related. Meshak's father is still on the lookout for young boys and girls to become slaves. He gets his hand on Aaron and plans to ship him across the sea. Will the innocent Aaron become a slave? Will he find out that his mother and father are still alive? Will Alexander discover that he has a son to love?
In a way, the characters in the novel are examples of people in real life. There are conflicts between fathers and sons, between girls and boys, and between best friends. These work out in the end because the characters feel a push to make things right again, even if it's a few years late. You can also learn numerous life lessons from this book. I found out that people with bad intentions never win in the long run; their bad hearts stick out like a piece of coal in gold! I also learned that you should always be optimistic, because you never know if your life will turn a bend that will change your life forever!
Out of the many characters in the book, whether old or young, I must say that my favourite one was Thomas, Alexander's friend. He felt sympathy for Alex when his family problems became bigger and helped him without any questions. He raised the suspicion of Meshak's father when many children started disappearing. He started the question of whether Aaron was his best friend's son. He raised many spirits with his sense of humour. Without him, how could the story have gone on?
Why did I choose this book and not a fat juicy one then? I leafed through the novel and discovered that it was the proud winner of the Whitbread Children's Book Award, and decided to give it a try. Even though the novel isn't as thick as some as the other ones, it's packed with precious lessons for life and stories you'll never forget!
I love this book with all my heart; I love the plot and the way the ending is a complete and breathtaking surprise! I recommend this book to the whole world, because everyone on Earth deserves such a great book!

Coram Boy.......2002-05-13

Set in the eighteenth century, Coram Boy is a story of love, crime, tragedy, heartbreak and miracles. It is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read and one of my all time favourites. I am always reading it aloud, just because the words are so nice. The characters are very clear and made to love or hate. The author shows such depth of knowledge and expresses so much emotion! It is a complex, exciting novel and the end will make you cry! I love it to bits. I'm sure you will to.

Coram Boy.......2002-03-04

Otis Gardiner is a peddler in London who persuades young women to pay him for bringing their babies to the famous Coram Hospital, a place where unwanted children can receive proper education and have a successful future. However, after Otis got paid, he would kill these babies and later on blackmail the women who entrusted him with their babies for more money. His son, Meshak, saved a baby that he was about to kill and escaped to the Coram Hospital and stayed there for the next eight years. The baby was named Aaron Dangersfield and was very talented in music, like his father, Alexander Ashbrook. Alexander discovered that Aaron is actually his son in a meeting with his wife and sister, but Aaron was already being sent on a ship to America to be sold as a slave. Someone rescued Aaron from the ship shortly after it parted. Finally, Alexander reconciled with his long lost son.
I think this is an unbelievably awesome book. It involved many characters that each has their own small story in this book. For example, Aaron Dangersfield¡¦s foster father is a simpleton, and he often dreamed of living with the kind angles in the chapels away from his cruel father. Aaron¡¦s real father was kicked out of his family for living a life as a musician instead of learning how to take care and prosper from his father¡¦s estates. Furthermore Aaron¡¦s best friend, Toby, is an African, and he was being treated like a rare, dark-skin plaything more than a human. All of these small stories add up to be what Aaron has to experience or discover, which is what makes Coram Boy extra interesting.
My favorite part of this book is the epilogue. In the epilogue, Meshak was finally able to be with his imaginary angels after all the suffering he went through. He is a simpleton and was being treated cruelly by his father ever since he was born. He doesn¡¦t really mind being mistreated by his father, but he does feel mad when he saw with his very own eyes that the girl he admired fell in love with somebody else. Therefore, he saved that girl¡¦s baby boy and loved him like his son. At the end, when even the boy that he cared about so much went away, he asked his imaginary angels, ¡§Can I be dead now?¡¨ With merely five short words, so much is being remembered and expressed.

It is 1741; Otis Gardner is the Coram Man, a cruel, sadistic trader who makes his living from the disposal of unwanted infants and by selling older children into slavery. Together with his half-wit son Meshak, he travels from Gloucester to London, collecting children under false promises of delivering them to the famous hospice founded by Thomas Coram.

Alexander Ashbrook, disinherited heir to a large estate, is unaware of the existence of his illegitimate son Aaron, a child given away in infancy and brought up in the Coram hospice to avoid scandal. Aaron, also oblivious to his father's identity, befriends Toby, a young boy saved from an African slave ship, and the childlike Mish who brought him to the orphanage all those years ago.

Set in eighteenth century Britain, "Coram Boy" is an epic tale of good and evil and the relationships between a father and a son. The plot is complicated yet compelling enough to make this novel impossible to put down. Jamila Gavin weaves a powerful story that explores the darker side of life in the 1700s and which combines romance, history, tragedy and hope. Beautifully written and filled with a cast of colourful and memorable characters to bring this eighteenth century world to life, Coram Boy is both a unique and special book. Although difficult to get into, this is ultimately an extremely rewarding read that has a wide appeal, although some readers may find the content of infanticide disturbing. Overall, this is definitely a five star book, and I would highly recommend it to both teens and adults .

Dahl was coasting when he wrote this.......2007-06-09

The publishers must have demanded a sequel, so this is what Dahl came up with. Slow, repetitious, and not very imaginative.

The glass elevator goes up-up-up. So what will come next? It will go down-down-down. The grandparents take pills in order to get very, very young. What will happen next? They take pills to get very, very old, of course. But not without alot of repetitive dialog to make the whole story last longer. Ugh.

We both loved some of Dahl's other novels for their creativity and heart (for example, The BFG), but this one feels almost like it was written by someone else. Maybe kids will like reading this book to themselves, but reading it aloud to my daughter was a chore.

Great Sequel.......2007-04-11

A Must have especially if you have the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Not a funny or as long as its prequel but a classic in its own right.

Willy Wonka in Space.......2007-02-24

I really didn't know if I would enjoy this book as much as the first since the first half of the book is spent in outer space and not at the Chocolate factory. But once they do return to the factory, it picks up again. I still recommend this book, but the original is far superior. I don't know if I liked how selfish this book made Charlie's grandparents seem. This shouldn't be turned into a movie

I thought sequals were supposed to be bad.......2007-01-25

"Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" by Roald Dahl is an excellent sequal to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." I highly reccommend it for kids who loved the first book and are curious to find out what happens.

Charlie has just won Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. But the adventure is not over yet. Willy Wonka gives him and his family, including his grandparents who won't get out of bed, a "lift" home using the great glass elevator. On the way there, Charlie's grandparents doubt Wonka's actions in landing, and get the elevator stuck in orbit. Wonka has a plan to get back, but he's going to have some trouble when the President, his workers, and a very strange species happens to be there too.

This book is just as great as the first one, including some funny long words, oompa loompass, and plenty of chocolate. Once again, I reccomend it for kids who love the first bok and chocolate. This book is very coolio bell grande.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a very funny book. I really recommend it. It's about Charlie's family go into a glass elevator and end up into space. In the story there is a president which is really dumb. Any kid of any age would really like it . If, you get this book I really hope you enjoy it.

Excellent Resource.......2006-10-01

I found this to be an excellent resource to help locate books with black boys as main characters. This book is divided into different sections --- preschoolers and upward --- which helps you select age appropriate titles. Wonderfully detailed descriptions and opinions of books are given as well as publisher information, etc. Books are of a great variety (educational, entertaining, etc.). Certain authors are highlighted with a biographical sketch. Also highlighted are real black boys of various ages who briefly tell of there favorite book. I never new that 90% of these books existed.

Black Books Galore.......2005-07-26

I purchased the book relating to boys and found it to be an extremely helpful resource in locating books that depict black children in the stories. The book entries are categorized by the age of the child reader from newborn to teenager, and is accompanied by a thorough description of its contents, as well as background information on the authors. I know I will return to this resource time and time again as my grandson enters each new phase of growing up.

This book was okay, just okay. In my opinion, it didn't have as good adventures as the others books had. There were some exciting parts, true; but to, me the whole book wasn't worth it. The end was disappointing and somewhat predictable.

Try reading: "While the Clocked Ticked" the Hardy Boys book #11. Now that is some really good fiction.

The Great Airport Mystery.......2006-05-11

If you like mysteries I would get to the library. The Great Airport Mystery is by Franklin Dixon. The characters are Joe, Frank, and Mr. Fenton. It takes place at an airport on a dirt road. The problem is a plane hits their car.

In the beginning of the story Joe and Frank take a shortcut on a dirt road because they are late getting home for dinner. In the middle of the story they get on a helicoppter to fly around the airport and then see a tornado. To find out what happens, you will have to read The Great Airport Mystery.

I think the story is one of a kind. Boys in 3rd-4th grade would like this book.

You'll love it - it's a way of life.

This is where Dixon bounces back from the disappointing "Secret of the Caves," the installment immediately preceding this book. Yes, there are still caves in this one (perhaps "F.W. Dixon" is really "the mole" from Dick Tracy). However, the "great airport" is truly a mystery.

Despite well-lighted and established signage (white helvetica letters on a dark green background), the "great" airport of the title does not seem very great. When Frank and Joe leave their flivver in long-term parking, a plane lands on top of their car and they are knocked out. A few questions:

1. This is not the first time that they are knocked out. How is it that they both wake up at exactly the same time after these repeated assaults?
2. Given how often they are knocked out, where is the evidence of permanent loss of cognitive function?
3. What was used to knock them out? A truncheon? A sap? A broken tree limb? An artificial limb?

Anyway, it's nice to see Dixn back in mediocre form after the last disaster. It's like spending Christmas with an unwanted relative.

Best Hardy Boy.......2006-03-03

This exciting and adventurous novel was the best one out all the Hardy Boy mysteries!!!! This is a must read!

What? Another Cave?.......2005-04-04

The Hardy Boys have an adventure that takes place partially in the air this time. Someone is stealing parts containing platinum from Stanwide Mining Equipment Company. The problem is that no one can seem to figure out how it is happening. The Hardy Boys get involved when they are taking a short cut through the country and a plane almost crashes on the roof of their car. Soon the Hardy Boys are trying to learn the source of ghostly whistling and voices.

The Hardy Boys' investigation takes them to an island in the Caribbean Sea, a cave with multiple secrets, and a cabin in Montana. This adventure also contains some of the most dangerous villains the Hardy Boys have encountered yet.

The author continued the use of caves as an integral part of the story. This book is the eighth that uses a cave. In this story the cave is quite large. I am imagining that the United States is filled with caves, at least as far as this author is concerned.

The author paced the last couple of stories nicely, keeping the action going and with sufficient mystery to make a reader want to continue onward. I am impressed with the author's ability to write ever more interesting stories as this series has progressed. I am looking forward to the next novel, "What Happened at Midnight."

Though the Hardy Boys series is written in a relatively archaic fashion, as reading material for an increasingly younger audience they are excellent. The stories were once recommended for children ages 10 to 14. As children are exposed to more violence and seem to require greater levels of stimulation, the recommended age range has move to 9 to 12. I think any child capable of reading some of the challenging words in these books will enjoy them, regardless of how tame most of the action may be. Once a child has reached age 12 or so the stories may be of less interest, but given the combination of mystery and action, these books remain good safe choices for parents who want to know what their children are reading.

Great for 10 year olds.......2001-01-24

I like the way the stories are broken up into 10-15 minute reads. This is perfect for bedtime reading, unfortunately, when I read this to my 5 year old son, I have to say that I've felt the need to skip over some parts of the stories due to their graphic nature. I imagine a 10 year old is more ready for dead rats but why change the plot so far away from the intentions of the classical writer?
