didn't even use it.......2002-03-30
I wish I'd spent the money for this book on something else. I never even cracked it open. It is very easy to get around in Germany without it--even a single traveler with no real plan in mind can communicate with relative ease. I'd probably only need this book if I were taking a German Language class.
Not an easy learning tool.......2000-08-07
This is more of a reference book designed for walking around Germany and being able to flip through the pages and hold a basic conversation. I expected it to be a lesson, but it was just lists after lists of words. Not very helpful.
A Book Worth Having........1999-11-26
I just got the new edition of this phrase book recently and must say that it's very good. I've been learning German for almost three years and this guide from Berlitz is one of the best on the market. This is truly the book to have whether you're just learning German as a hobby, or if you're going on a trip to Germany.
Book Description

Perfect.......2007-04-08
This is an ideal vocab builder. It is organized logically by situation and is very comprehensive. It provides a set of words, then tells you where you can find related subjects in the margins. It also gives plurals for every noun (doesn't depend on rules, etc.). The only downside is that this book does require a certain level of understanding before use- there are no conjugations for the verbs and the user must be able to recognize the difference between certain constructions (i.e. seperable verbs versus verbs with a preposition). Great book, perfect for AP exam, CLEP, review, supplement to a class, etc.
An excellent text!.......2003-01-21
There are any number of texts on German vocabulary. I have a number of them, but this one is the most attractively presented. It is arranged by categories and is very easy and pleasant to use.
Like most Berlitz products, this is very nicely done.

A great way to review vocabulary!.......2005-11-17
I have used this book as a complement to my German language studies and has proven very useful to increase vocabulary. I am using this book by myself at home, working on the unit of the topic I learn at school and I really get new words. It contains fun activities like unscramble the words, search-a-word, puzzles and some exercises to review grammar like completing the dialogs, finding mistakes, and also reading comprehension exercises with questions, true or false, etc. At the back of the book it contains a short summary of different grammar topics with examples to help you solve any doubts you might encounter while answering the book and of course you have the answer key to make sure you are doing fine. It is divided in different units which cover different topics like food, family, nationalities, meeting people, finding your way out, around the city, telling the hour, etc.
I really disagree with the other reviewers because at least for me as a beginner student it has been really helpful (and fun!)
Very difficult workbook.......2005-08-18
I studied German for 2 years in highschool and spent 3 months in Northern Germany where I spoke Deutsch every day! Yet, I find this book confusing and difficult. I wish I had never purchased this book. It has been a frustrating waste of money.
Very basic beginners book.......2000-07-25
My German skills learnt through three years at school, never expecially strong and all the worse for a five year lapse, were exposed as the poor excuse they were during a two week trip to Deutschland two years ago. This book (and a handful of others) was supposed to be part of the attempt to restore my self esteem.
However, this book just doesn't help if you're trying to recover the basics of the grammar with almost no vocabulary to work from - it isn't that sort of book. Almost half of the time completing the very very simple exercises is spent thumbing through the dictionary to find the masc/fem/neuter of a noun. And they are *very* simple exercises - you're not looking at getting fluent in a hurry here. And it's frustrating.
What's needed (and I found in Adrienne Penner's basic Gimmick book) is a drilling in each incremental part of the language as you're learning, to teach each aspect and test it to make sure it's learnt.
Instead, you're still working on basic adjectives halfway through the book (page 54, to be precise), with no real expanse in vocabulary or grammatical understanding.
To be fair, this book is probably a lot more useful to people learning at school the first time around, with support. It's likely to hold the attention of a child or young adult a lot longer than dry drills, but ultimately if you just want to get on and rebuild your skills, this isn't the book for you.
Good luck!

Helpful.......2007-08-28
This is a good book as long as you have someone that you can work with. I had a partner but no longer and my friends can tell I haven't gotten much better since then, can't hear out loud.
Not what I expected, and NOT for new students of the language.......2007-03-20
I recently jumped head-first into learning German, and purchased this book along with the Pimsleur Conversational German 16-CD set. I cannot get enough of the CD's, but this book is really poor in my opinion. I was hoping the book would be a good reference companion to the CD's in order to help clarify some things, but no dice. It should be noted that the copyright date on this book is 1950, which becomes very evident within the first few pages. Much of the phrases and words are very outdated and are barely used in Germany anymore. Some of the phrases presented in this book didn't even make sense to my German friend who lived in Germany most of her life! For instance, WHY would I need to learn "I shall get up early, so to speak with the chickens"? or "In the department store, you ask for the department store you are looking for"? I'm not kidding, this and other useless, outdated phrases are liberally strewn throughout this book. If you want to take a trip back in time, and already know German, this book 'may' be refreshing. If you're trying to learn the language on your own, and want to actually understand how to speak German like someone born within the last 40 years, I would look for something else. (I'd HIGHLY recommend audio tapes or CD's where you can HEAR someone speaking the language and practice with them. It worked wonders for me!)
Besser gibt's nicht!.......2005-06-25
I have lived in Germany about 10 years now and this is without a doubt THE best book I have found. As a person still learning (aren't we all?) and a German instructor the format used in the book is very fitting. You learn German like a young child would. The horrible grammer is slowly interjected as you progress. Certainly a two-thumbs-up book!
Sehr Gut!.......2005-04-23
This book is very good. I am currently learning German with a friend and am a complete beginner. This starts off well, teching you feminine, neuter, and masculine tenses and throwing in vocabulary, and 5 new numbers a lesson. All the lessons are formatted around a theme. However, the pronunciation guide in the beginning is a little lacking and, if you are teaching yourself, you will need to get a couple other books. I also recommend Joseph Rosenburg's German: How to Speak and Write it, German in 10 minutes a day by Kristine Kershul, and a good dictionary.
The Best for What it Does.......2004-11-28
About 20 years ago, I was stationed with the Army at Redstone Arsenal, AL, and was issued orders to go to Germany. Not wanting to show up there a total ignoramus (like the man said, "When in Rome..."), so I bought this book and devoured it. When I showed up at my duty station in Heilbronn, I was able to get by pretty well, and after another couple weeks, I found my accent getting better. The German phonetic pronunciations are very good, and I was able to be understood by Schwabians and Ostfriesians alike.
After I was there a few weeks, I was required to enroll in the Army's German Headstart program, a one-week class to learn common German phrases, such as asking traffic directions and how to order from a German menu. There was not one question I did not know the answer to, and when called upon, I was able to answer intuitively. The teacher asked me how I learned German so well, and I told her that I had been studying the Berlitz Self-Teacher for a couple months. She remarked that she had run across many soldiers who learned to speak conversational German by studying this excellent book.
What makes the Berlitz Self-Teacher the best primer for learning German I ever had is that it is methodical and deals with everyday conversation. It was never meant to be a fully comprehensive volume on the German language or a grammar guide, but it is the best springboard I know for launching one into the language, and I've used at least a dozen similar books.
It's one alleged drawback is that it teaches many antiquated words and phrases, but that is also its charm: I had no problem being understood by older or educated people. (Do people make the complaint about Hemingway that its English is 50 years out of vogue, or is he recognized still as the great wordsmith and scribe that he was?)
Further, the Berlitz method gives you enough basic vocabulary to understand the language and once you get halfway through it, the rest will come to you by assimilating words and phrases you are now able to understand from being among the people, watching TV (or, "Telewision" or "Tee Wee" as some Germans call it) or reading the newspapers.
I also like that it teaches in the formal ("Sie") rather than the familiar ("Du") sense. It made a very nice impression on my girlfriend's parents, that I had learned all the social niceties, and was more respectful than most German youth my own age. Some of today's German phrase and "learn German in 15 minutes a day" type traveller's books dispense too readily with the formal, which I think is a big mistake, particularly for American speakers. It is bad enough that too many misinformed Europeans think of us as "ugly Americans," that is, informal and ill-mannered, but we don't need our language instruction to aid in this disinformation campaign!
Starting with this book is both a good icebreaker for getting acquainted with the good-natured German and for staying out of hot water with the occasional more stuffy Germans, who haven't any sense of humor.
From my experience, and from the experiences of friends and acquaintances, I've found that the best way to warm up to the Germans is to show respect for their language, by putting forth an honest attempt to communicate in it. This book is the best place to begin because it is well-mannered and polite.

Customer Reviews:
Very clear and practical to use........2005-11-17
As a German language student, this book has become really useful to me. The index is very easy to use, and it contains all the explanations that you might need in the process of learning a language, yet the book is written in easy English and it gives clear examples of their explanations, which makes the book ideal for beginners as well as advanced students. I strongly recommend it!
Something for Everyone.......2005-03-16
Bravo to Berlitz for having produced a one-stop comprehensive source of information on the German language. I find Berlitz German Grammar Handbook to be invaluable in its depth, clarity and precision in explaining and deciphering often incredibily difficult concepts in German.
This handbook can be used either as a strict grammar reference or to acquire a general or specific understanding of most aspects of German grammar. It may also be used as one of several means of acquiring a working knowledge of the `syntax' of the language.
Syntax means `word order' or how words fit together to convey meaning. I find the handbook to be quite good at demonstrating common everyday syntax in a simple fashion by means of the direct examples it provides.
Fortunately, this grammar handbook does not assume that you know the meanings of different grammatical terms. It contains abundant explanations for each specific point of German grammar and there are always complete explanations provided for all grammatical terms. The way in which the classic grammatical term and explanation is followed immediately by a practical example of everyday use is one of Berlitz Grammar Handbook's greatest strengths.
Another major plus to this grammar handbook is the huge number of practical and authentic mini-monologues which utilize different points of grammar in actual real-life contexts to illustrate a point of grammar as it's really spoken.
It is obvious that Bertlitz intended this manual for individuals who actually wish to `use' their German in real life situations. The handbook also makes clear which constructions are only for formal and not everyday use.
Overall, I recommend Berlitz German Grammar Handbook as a very good reference guide and learning tool for German. With Berlitz German Grammar Handbook you will be satisfied whether your are a complete novice or a language expert. It literally has something for everyone.

Very Nicely Done.......2003-01-21
As with most Berlitz products, this title is very nicely done with attractive style (without becoming cluttered and distracting looking as so many modern textbooks seem to do) and workable layout. The content is complete and intelligently presented. I have several German grammars, but this is the pleasantest to use and the nicest of them all.

Better than I expected.......2000-11-12
I purchased this set for my daughters ages 6 and 10. They love it. The story is cute, the books are clear and the flashcards are very nice. There are several blank wipe off flashcards included so you can make your own. After using this set the first time my daughters where able to repeat parts of the story and understand what it meant. There are other story and tape sets that go along with this set, they are equally as good.

A great help and learning tool.......2002-03-16
Easy to understand writing. There are 2 lines to every sentence to learn. One in German, two in english pronuncation of the German words, and 3 the Englis translation.
I found this book very helpful on my trip to Germany.
Solid Introduction to German Language.......2000-05-16
The book provides a good introduction to the German language. Each lesson consists of a conversation followed by exercises. The conversation is written in German, with a pronunciation guide and English translation. The written exercises which follow the conversation emphasize key aspects of the lesson. My only complaints are these: (1) some words are very hard to pronounce, and so the product would be better if it had a tape or CD accompaniment; (2) there are usually only 10 exercises at the end of each chapter, and I would prefer more.

Great introduction to the German language........2001-12-27
I also own another book in the Berlitz Essentials series along with the German one, and they're great! They present the language in life-like senarios, which is VERY helpful. The phonetic guide is also of great assistance.
This book is a definitely must-own for anyone wanting to learn German.
Clear, entertaining, thorough.......2000-04-22
Each chapter starts with a conversation. The phonetic pronunciation for each word is shown. Then comes a bit of grammar, lots of vocabulary, and, lastly, a quiz. The book is thorough, and practical. The best I've seen. Highly recommended
