This Basic program contains 5 hours of audio-only, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.
HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT
What is the Pimsleur® difference?
The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Italian structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Italian can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.
The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands of words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.
When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That same learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.
With Pimsleur you get:
- Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
- Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
- The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
- 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.
Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.
The 10 lessons in the Basic Italian are the same as the first 10 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Italian Level 1.
The 10 lessons in Basic Italian are also the first 10 lessons in the 16-lesson Conversational Italian edition.
The 10 lessons in Basic Italian are also the first 10 lessons in the 16-lesson Conversational Italian edition.
Pimsleur learners progress from either the Basic or the Conversational to the Comprehensive Level 1, and not from Basic to Conversational edition.

Pimsleur makes it easy.......2007-10-14
If you want to learn Italian quickly, this is the product. Simply driving to work and listening to these cd's has made it very easy for me to begin speaking this language. I will visit Italy this coming year and am confident that I will be able to speak and understand the language. Thankyou Pimsleur!
Pimsleur -- the only way to fly.......2007-09-10
We used these CD's intensely for 3 weeks before a trip to Italy. I used them only in driving back and forth to work. I covered each lesson twice (sometimes 3 times) before going to the next. When we (wife and I) arrived in Italy, we had a lot of fun with this and the naturally warm people of Italy seemed to have fun with us. We weren't exactly ready to read Dante in the original language, but for the scope of what this program intends to do we had a great experience.
If I had more use for the language than that of a tourist, I would like to go through then Pimsleur long course(s). This is a great way to learn a language. This is the best simulation of learning a language "naturally" that I have seen. The results were great and the pain was very low. Every word they teach is present in the context of use. There really is no rote memorization.
Highly recommended.
Meh, it was okay.......2007-06-27
This was a pretty good way to learn some random phrases, but i felt as if many of them would not be helpful whilst visiting italy. It had a lot of good ways to ask for directions, say you were american and htat you only knew a little italian, but i felt as if it should have included some more key phrases. it didn't even have "where is the nearest restroom?!" haha but other than that helpful for pronounciation.
learn Italian.......2007-02-22
Delightful for introduction to Italian conversation. Very, very clear - will give you authentic pronunciation and accent. Don't expect fluency or to understand an Italian movie, but excellent for basic communication. Only drawback, I missed seeing the written word to verify spelling. Wonderful on a long drive, I spoke Italian all the way from Vermont to Boston.
Excellent aid.......2007-02-15
For the traveler who wants to learn a few helpful words and phrases, this is a great help. Care has been given to helping the beginner learn to correctly pronounce the Italian words. For those wanting more, there are more advanced courses by Pimsler.

Very good beginning grammar.......2007-08-05
I bought this to supplement three all-Italian texts used in the classroom. The explanations are clear and easy to understand, and the vocabulary is very useful. The book gives me an edge in the classroom when we have general conversation and when learning grammar in general.
Utterly and completely worthless.......2006-07-05
This series of disks is nothing more than Italian words and names spoken ONLY IN ITALIAN. Because there are no English translations, it is almost impossible to learn even the most basic Italian from these disks.
entertaining well organized lessons with audio CDs.......2006-07-01
This Italian course is well organized, comprehensive and has 8 audio CDs. The dialogs are lively, modern, and natural.
The book is divided into individual chapters, where each lesson has the following parts: 1) an Italian dialog, 2) the same dialog translated into English, 3) groups of words such as days of the week, the months, seasons, numbers, 4) grammar explained, 5) vocabulary: all the new words in a particular chapter plus related words, e.g. if the text uses "I go to the store", the vocabulary list will give alternatives such as mall, restaurant, café, etc, 6) exercises pertaining to the text 7) cultural notes about Italy, 8) a key to the exercises, and in later chapters 9) additional reading material in Italian.
Four of the 8 CDs bring the dialogs and vocabulary of the book. In each chapter, the dialog is first read by female and male native speakers without interruption, then the dialog is read a second time, but this time the student can repeat the sentences after the speakers. After the dialogs, the vocabulary list from the book is read with a pause after each word so that the student can repeat the words. These CDs also bring additional pronunciation exercises.
The second set of 4 CDs is designed to complement the text but can also be listened to in a car, or while exercising. All text is both in English and Italian, it relates to the lessons learned and deepens your understanding of the text. You will be asked to translate English sentences into Italian, or to respond to Italian questions.
At the end of the book you will find an excellent summary of the grammar, verb charts with all their tenses, a chapter on letter writing in Italian, and a comprehensive glossary of all Italian words used in the book with their English translations.

Customer Reviews:
Quite disappointing.......2007-08-17
I've studied Spanish, French, German, and Portugese by CD, and in all cases was able to learn by playing the CDs while I drove, or by listening on my iPod while I did other things. With this set, however, that is not possible.
The CDs included have NO LESSONS on them. The lessons are in the included book. To use this series, one is intended to read the lesson in the book, then play the corresponding track on the CD to hear pronunciation, and then stop the CD and go back to reading the book. It requires an incredible amount of active participation, which is the opposite of why we buy language lessons on CD!
In the past I've used the Instant Immersion series and been very happy with it for Spanish, French, and German. I'm wishing I'd have bought it for Italian too, but I decided to try something different. I regret that choice, and I will most likely toss this product into the trash can and order the Instant Immersion Italian series.
I gave it two stars rather than one (or none, if that's possible) because while I find this to be in opposition to what I expect from a language learning system, I have to give credit for the amount of work involved in compiling such a product. For those with the time and ability to learn this way, the product seems adequate. Also, if nothing else, the box contains an English-Italian dictionary, in addition to the lesson book, so there's at least something useful included.
a great start for serious learners.......2007-07-24
Language learning from zero has never been easy. i am about finish this basic pack. without any knowledge of Italian before, i can pickup some paragraphs in Bell' Italia (a magazine can be found at some newsstands) with some help from the included dictionary.
this set is not really for driving-learning. because the CD has no English. for me, who had no idea of Italian before, the learning is not piece of cake. There is no rush hour killing time stuff works for me. By putting effort seriously on this book about 30 minutes everyday, I saw the result at the end of this book. So, I think if you seriously want to learn Italian, this is a great start kit. If throwing out couple of sentences in exotic flavor from time to time is your goal, go for those CD only packages.
Lack of time to take a course in class? Look no further!.......2006-05-30
I always wanted to speak another language. Although I am bilingual, fluent to Spanish, Italian was my next goal. Since is similar to Spanish, I wasnt too hard for me to learn. But some words in Italian I had no idea what it meant or how to say it, but with this item it made it much easier to learn and to follow. I will take a class next semester, but if you dont have the time to do so, then I stronly recommend this coursebook/cd...All I need is SOMEONE to practice so I can get more confident. Of all course books outhere that I reviewed and actually opened to read them, this one was the best one for me.
Complete Italian: The Basics (CD).......2006-01-29

Great for traveling.......2007-07-28
This book is great if you are traveling to Italy and don't have time to take a class to learn the language.
Gerard F........2006-03-31
This book is worthless, even for $2. Very outdated (phrases about telegrams). I returned it. Buy Rick Steve's Italian Phrases instead. It is more compact and current (asks how to send an e-mail, not telegram).
Pretty bare bones phrase book.......2006-03-23
This was the cheapest phrase book that I saw offered on Amazon.com and, as trite as it is, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for the most basic of interactions with Italian speakers and are only planning on staying in tourist hotels and shopping in tourist markets, then this might suffice. However, if you are planning to interact with native Italian speakers in a less superficial way, or if you want to be able to express yourself with somewhat more sophistication, I would recommend another phrase book.
Easy equals Beginner.......2006-03-02
This book is too large to fit in your pocket. It has normal size type but lots of space between the entries. Check out other options and you will find a smaller, more useful reference.
Absolutely out of date Almost useless........2001-03-16
I had to look at the publication of this book. I thought it might be 1930. The section on Customs is really foolish. No one arriving in Italy needs to learn those foolish sentences about "This is for my personal use", "where are customs?" The train section is useless. Where is the smoking car? You select the type of car you want WHEN YOU BUY YOU TICKET. So old fashion! It is not useful for Italian of today.!
Book Description
Basic Cooking and Baskic Baking served as solid foundations for learning how to cook and bake. Now, even more enjoyment, fun, and knowledge about trendy and classic cooking is possible. Italy epitomizes vivaciousness--la dolce vita--and its cooking is probably the best-loved national cuisine in the world. The first section of this book offers basic how-to's on shopping for key ingredients (like pasta, cheese, balsamic vinegar, espresso, and wine), explains these necessaries, and lists Italian souvenirs that will infuse any home with "that Italian feeling." The recipe section is divided into starters, snacks and salads, pasta, risotto, pizza and polenta, soups and vegetables, fish and meat, and dolci. But this is not a simple collection of ethnic recipes; it is a new approach to Italian cooking and an eclectic group of meals that will well serve any party or gathering, big or small.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book and results!.......2004-08-28
This book delivers what it title implies. After a description of the basics you will need for making Italian food, it takes you through recipes by main ingredient.
The food is basic, the recipes are not too complicated, and the ingredients are easy to find in any standard store. My only complaint, albeit minor, is that the instructions are a little too detailed at times. This gets in the way once you figure out what they mean in the description, but ensure that your meal comes together at the same time.
Easy to follow.......2003-10-04
This is a wonderful introduction to Italian cooking. The meals are authentic, and recipes easy to follow. This is a must have for simple Italian cooking, and this comes from someone who lived in Italy for 5 years.

Not worth the money.......2005-10-29
I read the book inserts, and the reviews and bought this book expecting more than it delivered. The only time they speak English is to repeat what they just said (too quickly)in Italian. If you want to memorize phrases, without really learning the language then this is the program for you. If you really want to learn Italian try another program.
An excellent at-home course.......2005-08-16
After checking various Italian tapes and resources out of the library, I decided to buy the Ultimate Italian set. It is the most comprehensive, academic learn-at-home Italian set I ran across. In my opinion, tapes that rely on memorization of dialogue with no underlying instruction on grammar, verb construction, etc. have *very* limited usefulness if you want to actually learn a language, rather than repeat a few rote phrases on your vacation (and not understand the answers back!). This set requires discipline, it is like a real class with vocabulary and grammar and a quiz at the end of each lesson, but if you commit to it you will be rewarded for that commitment. I crammed as much as I could in seven weeks (a lesson every morning) and felt very confident when I went to Italy by myself--I had no trouble communicating and was able to say everything I wanted. If you're looking for something easy you can just listen to in the car so that you can politely say a few things to show respect to locals, you will not enjoy this set. If you are a serious student of foreign language who wants more than to "get by," put this in your cart. (I just bought the French version, that's how much I liked the Italian.)
Great starter!.......2004-03-30
This series is excellent for beginner. The emphasis on grammar is heavy. It suits intermediate more than beginner. The "at home" CDs is not similar as the "on the go" version. I wish they were both exactly the same. Much less conversation is presented at the "on the go" version. Only an abbreviated version of conversation. The exercises are simple and short. Overall, it's a very good program and helpful.
One of the best yet!.......2004-01-19
I've self-learned languages using audiotapes and CD's before. This particular series "Ultimate Italian" has got be one the top three. What's useful is that there are two versions - one for "in the car" and the other for "at home". This program was designed for both separately. It is up-to-date and addresses all daily usage vocbularies. Good one!
Good for Beginners.......2003-06-02
I have wasted so much time (and money) trying to locate a good program for learning Italian. The Ultimate Italian: Basic Intermediate is worth every penny.
Pros:
1) The first 4 CD's leave no guesswork as to what is being spoken because the manual has all the dialogue for you to follow along (not so common with book/CD combinations).
2) You can start using the CD's on day one. You don't have to read several "primer" pages before jumping in.
3) The lessons are actually IN ORDER. This may sound strange, but many books jump around in a sequence that confuses the reader. Such as; from verbs to indirect objects THEN to introductions and vocabulary.
4) The CD's are NOT boring...a big plus because you'll find yourself using them OFTEN, especially the last 4 CD's which are designed for "on the go" listening, in the car or wherever.
5) After completing the program (if you apply yourself), you will no doubt be able to carry on a useful conversation and write with grammatical accuracy.
6) The program states that it is "equivalent" to 2 years of Italian college study. This is true.
7) 8 full hours of audio...excellent.
Cons:
1) Not enough vocabulary. However, this is true for every Italian program I've bought. Make sure you have a good, up to date English/Italian dictionary if you buy this program.
2) Lack of computer CD. This would have been an excellent plus to augment vocabulary.

Customer Reviews:
Living Language course rules!.......2006-12-23
I've used Living Language courses since high school. My opinion is that they are overall the finest way to be introduced to a foreign language.
They use sentences grouped by grammatical function so that one learns (unconsciously) the grammar along with the vocabulary. There also is supplementary grammar if one wants to dig more into the machinery of the language.
I still benefit from having had my first introduction to Spanish from these courses. Now, having decided to review my univerisity French, I find this is still the finest CD on learning basic French.
Recommended.
A good tool for those with some background in French.......2006-01-09
I have been using Beyond the Basics French for about a week and I've found it very useful--it is definitely worth the time and money. It is not for someone with no background (hence, their "The Basics" I'm guessing). In grad school I had twelve hours or French (six studying abroad in France) and this course has been not only a good review but has built my vocab and, thank god, explained some grammatical/idiomatic stuff that I'm sure we covered in class but that didn't quite click with me b/c I'm not wonderfully adept at learning a new language.
If you've had at least 101-102 French, you should be fine with this. My only complaint is that some conversations aren't spoken slowly enough for me, but putting this on your iPod or mp3 makes it easy to back up a little be as often as you need to.
If you don't have a great intro/intermediate French dictionary, Harper Collins' French Beginner's Dictionary is the best I've found.

Missing Pages.......2007-06-01
While you said this book was in great shape, the entire first five chapters had been torn out.
I believe you should credit me or send another one.
Italian Headings.......2004-05-16
This book is a very expensive book. $96.95 for a book with only 443 pages. It is not worth the price. Also in each chapter there are words in Italian as a heading without the English word. If you look them up in the Italian-English Vocabulary at the end of the book they are not listed. Why would someone write a book on a foreign language and not explain the meaning of the phrases in English. Examples are Domande, Esercizi, Come si dice, etc. This book needs improved.
basic italian lab manual.......2002-02-10
THIS BOOK HAD WRITINGS ALL IN THE BOOK. HOW CAN THE SELLER SELL SOMEONE A BOOK IN SUCH BAD CONDITIONS. MY FIRST TIME AD IT WAS A HORRIBLE EXPIERENCE! I RETURNED IT AND NOW I HAVE 2 LOOK SOME MORE
Best Italian book for new student.......2000-02-13
Of the several books I've used this is the best for a student to use for self-teaching with tutorial help or for a class of first time students. Thirteen pages at the beginning dedicated to pronunciation is unprecedented but essential to those wanting to speak and understand the language. It(mostly) avoids the usual problem of inserting grammer not yet covered. The important grammatical issues are clear and well displayed. One drawback is the "bitesize" nature of the chapters which results in some inconvenience in structuring a syllabus. Many users characterize the book as "easy". But it covers all essentials of the language, comparable to other textbooks, and in just as much depth. It's presentation and logical flow eliminate much confusion for a new student.

Had higher hopes.......2007-06-12
Overall, I was disappointed by this book. The reason I bought it was the layout--it seemed clear and concise and a good review to refresh on the Italian I already know. I do find it full of good summary tables, vocabulary lists and verbs. But there are so many typos and errors! Really, there are mistakes in the verb conjugations and in the answers in the appendix. Unforgivable.
Some Fun But Many Errors.......2006-04-21
Thank goodness I was just reviewing my knowledge of basic Italian! This book contains many interesting sidebars and fun crossword puzzles as well as interesting contemporary social and historical information but there are so many grammar errors (typos and poor, if any, editing) that I must caution any beginner against using it.
Having fun with/in Italian.......2003-01-04
Just for the fun of it - enjoy learning
Italian. Not too heavy, just right!
Incomplete, sloppy.......2002-12-04
If you've been studying Italian at all it won't take you too long to start doubting this book. Full of silly mistakes that really undermine what could've been a good idea...Back to the real books!!
Fantastic.......2002-11-27
I have been studying Italian for years and found this book extremely well organized and clear. This book was a pleasure to read and I am buying copies for all of my friends who are studying Italian!
