Good Composition Text.......2007-05-25
The university where I teach allows us to choose our own composition text. After much research and personal experience with several composition texts, I use this guide. While I agree that the selected essays do have a liberal slant I do not agree that the writing is too difficult for a freshman to understand.
There is no way that I would assign the entire textbook, cover to cover, for one semester. Even the authors do not suggest this. I use the chapters on reading and writing rhetoric, research, critical data analysis, and writer conferencing with all of my composition classes. Then I pick and choose which specific writing projects/chapters I will use for different levels.
I highly recommend this textbook. It has a lot of acurate and useful information and is a great source for a composition course.
To counterbalance the liberal essays, I add in several others from many different perspectives and fields to allow students to have a wider understanding of the world.

Much ado about nothing.......2005-08-11
I have been required to use this text at one school where I teach, and it is a dismal experience. Most of the other instructors feel the same way, but we are overruled by a minority opinion.
The authors do not have a clue that they are writing this book for a freshman college audience. You need advanced reading skills in order to be able to understand some of the chapters in this book. For example, they overly complicate the chapter on writing evaluations.
The readings are also dry and have a noticeably liberal slant. Although, there are a couple of interesting ones, such as the essay about Sesame Street being sexist. However, there are not enough readings to provide good examples for students to use as models.
If I was not forced to use the book, I would not. This is too much money to spend on a book that is not especially useful.

Great Handbook.......2006-06-29
I got the spiral bound version and it stays right next to my dictionary on my desk. There are always little things that confuse me when I am typing (which one do I use affect/effect, where do I put this comma or should it be a semicolom, etc.)It is the only book I turn to. The computer can catch most of them, but when my grammar checker is confused, I turn to this great book.
I bought it for a composition course, and even though I sold all the rest of the books needed for school, I kept this one. It is well worth the price for this great guide. I have never before seen so much useful information so nicely compacted. I love the two sections: commonly confused words and frequently misspelled words.
Great guide to help become a critical writing expert.......2005-09-21
This book was an assigned textbook for a college class, however my professor encouraged each class member to consider keeping this small handbook as a great resource for any type of writing. It includes concise suggestions on grammar, critical thinking skills when writing a persuasive paper of any kind. I used it especially for writing essay's and research papers during the term and will definately use it in the future. I am glad that I purchased this book with the ring binder option instead of regular binding. This has been helpful when I'm reviewing a section because it lays flat and folds easily. It is a small book packed with big ideas for better writing.

This volume is a simple and a useful tool for anyone who is interested in improving his/her writing. This book is organized in 7 parts: Grammar; Sentence Errors; Sentence Clarity and Variety; Punctuation; Mechanics; Diction; and Paragraphs, Essays, and Research Papers. It also includes two glossaries: one of Usage and the other of Grammatical Terms. It offers the basic and essentials of grammar and usage. It also includes the rules for punctuation and the necessary elements for making up good paragraphs, essays, and research papers. This book belongs to a particular kind of reading: the one you never finish to read because you always have to check it if you want to write better! . The amazing adventure of writing is a hard task. As a non native speaker, to write in English could be a terrible nightmare. Doubtless, "The Brief English Handbook" is going to accompany me from now on.

This was a required book for an ENC 1101 class, and it is well written as well as easy to follow. It is a book that I would recommend keeping, to refer to when writing future papers.

Definitely Brief.......2007-04-04
I do like the book and use it alot for school. The part that I use most is the Directory of Words Cited. Unfortunately, many times the exact type of work to be cited is not listed. For instance, a book with an editor in multiple volumes in an edition other than the first is not covered. Neither is an article from a journal obtained from a database.

I found it very helpful as I was not familiar with APA or other writing styles and took my class online so I had no live instructor to question.

I first purchased this book when I was a freshman in college seven years ago. It is without a doubt the best and easiest reference guide to writing I have ever read. I love the plastic tabs that mark each section. This guide is easy to read and follow it is organized in basic steps that are categorized accourding to section. So for example if you need to find out how to cite a web page or a video tape, etc using the MLA style you just flip to the section called doucmentation clearly marked with a plastic tab. I have since purchased an updated guide for myself and also bought one for my brother - a freshman in college. I really wish I had this book when I was in high school. I highly recommend this book to any high school, college, graduate student or writer. I especially recomend this book for students with learning disabilities, I myself have ADD and before I got this guide I could not understand how to write a paper in the MLA style or in any style other than a book report. I promise this is the easiest reference guide to writing ever published.

This book is the best on the market - I highly recommend it to all students in high school and college -- and it is a must for every person who writes in business! It has everything you need to know about professional writing from the sentence to the essay or research paper, as well as resumes and letters. It should be added to the desk collection along with the dictionary and thesarus. I love the way it opens and lays flat; I love the tabs for easy recognition of sections; it has large enough print and enough whitespace to make it very easy to read; it has great explanations and examples, and the MLA section is complete and easy to follow. It even has a section for people who speak English as a second language and are dealing with the special problems related to English. This is a must have book !
