Book Description
This revised edition of the classic Manual for Lay Eucharistic Ministers offers practical guidance on everything a eucharistic minister or eucharistic visitor does. (Eucharistic ministers help to administer the elements at the Eucharist, while eucharistic visitors bring those elements to members of the congregation who can't be present). This guide, updated to include the new canons and procedures, also offers suggestions on how to prepare oneself spiritually to present the sacrament, what to do when visiting the sick or shut-in parishioner with the Eucharist, and how to prepare a sacred space in someone's home or hospital room.
Appendices include rites, suggested prayers and guidelines, services for commissioning and sending forth Lay Eucharistic Ministers, and a bibliography. Beth Ely also traces the changing customs and canons of lay administration of communion from the early churches to the present, and discusses the riches and mystery of the Holy Eucharist through the centuries.

A Manual for Eucharistic Visitors.......2007-08-23
I purchased this book to read because even among some clergy there is little understanding of the ministry of the eucharistic visitor. Among the eucharistic visitors, (lay eucharistic ministers in the Episcopal Church), there is seldom much training or understanding of the sacrament or the spiritual act being performed. Among both the clergy and the lay participants there is seldom a full realization that the EV is not only bringing the sacrament to a person unable to attend regular services, but the spiritual presence of the entire Christian community as well.
The author does a wonderful job explaining these relationships between the physical, spiritual, and meta-physical in this function of pastoral care. Her explanations and examples are written concisely, are easy to understand and are spritually grounded and referenced. A fine tutorial.

Ecclesia Consulting Group.......2007-02-01
After having met Dr. Powers and reading his book, I beileve him to be a gifted and passionate administrator and teacher. This book covers many of the prinicple topics of Church Administrative and is a great resource for new administrators and leaders as well experienced individulas needing a refresher. This has been reccomended reading for many of our members and will continue to be so in the future.
Super resource.........2007-01-23
I purchased this book on the advice of a seminary professor. I am so glad I listened to his words.
This book provides many invaluable tools, forms, etc. to help the pastor (particularly new pastor) in his ministry.
This book should be a required text for a class by the same title!
Useful Church Administrator Resource.......2006-09-09
Powers has written a useful (but bland) text outlining many of the tasks that are essential to effective church ministry. This is a highly recomended book for those looking to become administrators of churches or non-profit ministries.
A wonderful handbook for Church Administration........2002-02-20
This book was wonderfully constructed. It is a must have for all pastors, chairmen of deacons, trustees and administrative assistants. If you have a question about how a proceedure should be done, more than likey this book has covered it. It will certainly be a compliment to your personal library.

A Grain of Salt.......2007-01-11
I found this book exceedingly easy to read and full of information. My only concern is that some of the information is dated. The book attempts to cover things like tax laws and computers -- these things change so quickly, it's not surprising that the information seems a bit outdated. I do feel there is excellent information in this book regarding choosing the ministry as a career, and what that means. There are just certain chapters I would skip. If I became a senior pastor somewhere and needed to know the latest tax laws, I would call an accountant before I trusted ANY book. Likewise, if I needed to buy a computer at any point, in any capacity, I might turn to a magazine, but never to a book printed several years earlier.
Superb Reference Manual for Church Leaders.......2003-05-27
This book is one of a series of three works edited by James D. Berkley. Various church leaders give their input on a vast array of topics related to church management and administration. Had I known a reference work of this scope was available, I would have purchased it when initially published.
This work is divided into seven parts: personal management, transitions, leadership, paid-staff supervision, volunteer-staff supervision, management, and finances. Contributing authors include: Leith Anderson, Peter Drucker, Jack Hayford, Aubrey Malphurs, Joseph Stowell, and Chuck Swindoll. Each part of this volume is filled with words of wisdom from men and women who excel in their fields.
I highly recommend this book, and the two other volumes in the series, for all experienced and inexperienced church staff members. There is something here for everyone that will help in working with the various nuts and bolts of ministry. I know of no other title that compares to scope and excellence found here.
Book Description
This handbook for pastors, elders, and all Christians presents the process of discipline that should operate in the Christian community. It is based primarily on the five steps of corrective discipline found in Matthew 18:15-17.
Customer Reviews:
Great instruction.......2007-05-28
This book is short, yet gives very explicit intructions regarding the biblical mandate and process for the ministry of church discipline which every true church of the living God should be exercising. I highly recommend it for those already involved in this ministry, as a checkup on your activities in this area, and for those who are just realizing that scripture commands His church to carry out this work calling to repentance, restoration and keeping His church pure.
The BEST on the subject.......2005-09-05
This book should be mandatory in every seminary or pastoral seminar. I also read his original book over 10 years ago and bought this edition because the other one never made it back to me after I loaned it out. The corrections he made were outstanding and makes this book even more valuable.
It is written to cover Matthew 18:15-17 and it is done both biblically and simple in its presentation. There is so much unbiblical understanding in this area that I would recommend every minister to read this book to see how their views lines up.
The highest recommendation I can give is that I have used his material and his triangle of incremental steps in 3 churches and all have become healthier as a result. In one church there was a terrible problem with gossip that had taken over the atmosphere of the church. This teaching not only cleared the problem but no one was lost in the process.
What I especially like is how the congregation/members are empowered and released to care for each other as they become proactive in creating and maintaining healthy,Godly and biblical realtionships.
The most interesting possiblity is how a spouse can utilize this process to better their marriage.
Handbook of Church Discipline.......2005-08-31
Very practical. If we all followed his advice there would be no liberal churches; we all would be in or out.
Church Discipline and a more dynamic church for our Lord.......1999-11-04
The "Handbook of Church Discipline" by Jay Adams is a must for all pastors and lay workers alike. This book will give you clear, detailed information on a greatly overlooked area in our churches today, and yet it is concise enough to refer to at a glance whenever you need to. If you have ever had a disagreement, miscommunication, or unreconciled relationship with someone and wondered what to do, this book will direct you to the Scriptural answers laid out by Jesus Himself. Focusing on Matthew 18:15-17, Dr. Adams tackles an area where, sadly, few dare to tread. He details the process of both informal and formal discipline to give you a working knowledge of this subject to apply in your relationships with family, friends, your church, and unbelievers as well. If you wish to have a dynamic church for our Lord, and personal relationships with others that will reflect your love for God, I challenge you to read this book, search the Scriptures, and apply our Lord's teachings. May your life and ministry be blessed as mine has!

Thomas A Smith.......2007-04-02
This is one of those must have books for any new minister. If a minister ever had a question about conducting a service, this manual can guide you through with ease. I highly recommend this book and will be looking to purchase other material by this author.
Wedding Ministry.......2006-01-13
This book has a good look at the contemporary wedding services for the new Pastor.
Much of this books ceremonies are just reprints of standard wedding text. However I enjoyed the introduction and the general set-up of the text.
~ Pastor Dave Plunkett
Helpful material!.......2000-10-18
Jim Henry's "Wedding Manual" was most helpful to me personally. I recently officiated over my first wedding and needed ideas of how to do what "those preachers" did for weddings.
This book not only provided the typical, traditional service. It contained many different types of weddings, so I could pick and choose (along with the couple) just what was appropriate. The variety gave the couple some new angles to consider to make their wedding unique to them.
If you are looking for a starting point on how to conduct weddings, or need some fresh ideas on the same, this is the book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Mandatory Resource.......2007-07-10
This is an indispensible resource for those working with, or counseling youth. I have used it frequently for advice and guidance in dealing with the thorny and delicate issues of adolescence and young adulthood in my church. It has answers for everything from educational issues to sexual dilemmas. It is thoroughly researched and, as it says on the front cover, is comprehensive. Each issue is organized in five steps for easy comprehension, and to help you quickly analyze the problem or crisis.
1. identify the problem
2. discover its causes
3. determine its effects
4. view it from a biblical perspective
5. prescribe the right response
Josh McDowell is a world reknown author and speaker. He has written several bestselling books, including More Than a Carpenter, and Evidence That Demands a Verdict.
Great Helper for Working with Youth.......2005-10-10
This book is easy to read. I like the format and the design of the book. The author speaks clearly and in language that is understandable without the help of a dictionary. Fantastic book.
Great Resource.......2004-04-06
I've come to know how important it is to meet the needs of today's youth. There are some youth struggling in areas where we may have not struggled and getting solid information to minister to these youth is vital. This book provides that information!
There Is A need For This Book In Your Library.......2001-05-25
This is the definitive work on the basics of youth counselling. McDOwell offers solid advice on how to counsel teens through nearly any problem. Frank discussion of suicide, abuse, eating disorders, family life and sexuality help the untrained counselor aid teens. The writing is easy to follow and McDowell makes a point to never get "preachy" or take the Counselor toofar down a path. He offers referal information and soundly tells the counselor at what point to find help in the counselling session. Whether you are a Senior Pastor, Youth Pastor or a volunteer youth leader this book will help you better understand the minds and struggles of young people today while helping you know the best way to help them through.
READ THIS OR YOU ARE MISSSING OUT.......2000-11-02
ANYONE NOT UNDERSTANDING TEENS WILL GET A GRASP ON A TEENS LIFE BY READING THIS YOU WILL LEARN THAT WHAT YOU SEE A TEEN DOING IS NOT WHAT THE TEEN MIGHT BE THINKING,IN OTHER WORDS YOU WILL LEARN TEEN SPEAK WITH THEIR ACTIONS NOT THEIR WORDS AND NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR MAY BE A WAY A TEEN IS CALLING OUT OR THAT FOR THE TEEN THIS IS THEIR SECURITY SO THEY DON'T FEEL THE PAIN OR GET LOOKED DOWN UPON BY OTHERS INCLUDING ADULTS BECAUSE THEY ARE STRUGGLING. FOR MANY TEENS BELIEVE THAT IT IS BETTER TO HAVE PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON THEM BECAUSE OF BEHAVIOR RATHER THAN TO KNOW THAT THE TEEN IS HURTING.

Book Description
In any endeavor, dreams and goals not backed by concrete plans and preparations can result in failure. And marriage is no exception, claims H. Norman Wright. In fact, without solid planning and forethought by engaged couples, we will surely see a continuation of the startling divorce rate among Christians and non-Christians alike. On the other hand, thorough premarital counseling and preparation can result in lifelong marriages that are fulfilling and God honoring. That's where the church comes in. More and more churches are realizing that their responsibility lies not only in pronouncing men and women 'husband and wife,' but also in making sure the proper foundation is laid so that marriages have a better chance of standing strong under pressure. Since its introduction in 1977 as Premarital Counseling, this book has been used by literally thousands of churches throughout the country as both a guide and reference tool. Now Dr. Wright has added new material to cover some perplexing issues that have come into prominence only recently. Among those special concerns are: Interracial marriages Second marriages Marriages of persons from dysfunctional families Writing for both pastors and other premarital counselors, H. Norman Wright sets you at ease about the counseling process, even if you've had only limited counseling experience. As the author of the popular Before You Say I Do and numerous other books on marriage, H. Norman Wright documents in The Premarital Counseling Handbook methods hat have proved successful. These will help insure that the marriages performed in your church will resist the pressures that are destroying today's married couples.

Premarital Counseling.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for therapists who need general, well-rounded information regarding how to conduct pre-marital counseling.
Very Christian slant.......2006-08-14
Interesting points, however, buyer should know that it takes a pastoral, not necessarily a counseling, perspective to couple's work.
