Book Description

The completely revised and updated edition of the classic, best-selling guide to dream interpretation

In the first major revision of the encyclopedia that has sold half a million copies worldwide, Zolar, the acclaimed "Dean of Astrology" (The New Yorker), has created the indispensable bedside reference for today's dreamers, reflecting the changes that have affected our waking hours and inevitably influence the content and significance of the messages we receive while we sleep. Looking at new cultural trends, work and social patterns, technologies and means of communication, Zolar reveals the meanings of dreams about cell phones, computers, cyberspace, beepers and much more. His concise and incisive explanations of such classic dreams as meeting a redheaded stranger, flying without wings and trying to comfort a crying baby are here as well, while obsolete subjects -- like girdles, gleaners and grenadiers -- have been eliminated. To complement each dream category a lucky number has been added for this new edition.

With interpretations for more than 20,000 dreams, Zolar's Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams offers you the opportunity to uncover the secrets hidden in your dreams and to act on the wisdom -- or respond to the warnings -- they contain.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Best Dream Books.......2007-03-16

This book is thorough with detail descriptions. Easy to look up dreams and for those interested in numerology gives a number sequence to pursue. This book is the best dream book I have found.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-10-09

I was extremely disappointed when I received this book. In all fairness, I must admit that perhaps I was expecting too much from a dream dictionary. Perhaps they are all limited, and maybe I need to take a full course in dream interpreation lessons to get what I am looking for. To interpret a dream, I had looked up 'Alligators' on the internet. I found this interpretation ONLINE NOT FROM THIS BOOK, probably from some Jungian thought: "This cold blooded animal (alligator) could hold several different meanings in your dream. It could symbolically represent something from your memory, emotions, or a current situation or individual in your life. Some think that the alligator represents verbal power used in a destructive way (angry and hurtful words). Others believe that it represents an enemy. Consider the details in your dream and your level of fear. This dream symbol should encourage you to look at some of your more "dangerous" emotions, memories, and experiences. The alligators in your dreams will begin to lose the power to frighten you as your understanding increases. Carl Jung said that all wild animals indicate latent effects (feelings and emotions that we do not readily deal with). They are also symbolic of dangers (hurtful and negative things) being "swallowed" by the unconscious."
HOWEVER; ZOLAR'S definition of alligator is: "BEING ATTACKED BY AN: will be harassed and ridiculed by your enemies; "CONFRONTING AN: your unconscious fears cause your irrational actions. HANDBAG, HAVING: exercise caution with every step, care in each new speculation. SEVERAL: enemies surround you with their unconscious forces. SHOES, HAVING: be fearless with each step. WRESTLING WITH AN: an argument with a close friend is a misuse of your verbal power."
I just didn't find the Zolar's version all that useful. Yet, I do see that it has some of the elements of what an alligator represents and it addresses it from several angles. But based on what I saw all over the internet regarding alligators, it is just too short to be useful to ME. Others may see it differently, and like I said, apparently a dictionary is not the same as an interpretation, which is more what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Feeling a bit dreamy?.......2005-03-16

Believe it or not I have never owned a dream interpretation book before looking at Zolar's Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams. I wasn't really sure what to expect.

The first edition of this book sold half a million copies worldwide and this is the first major revision of this dream dictionary. The revision includes interpretations for cell phones, computers, beepers and much more, while the listings for subjects like girdles, gleaners and grenadiers have been taken out. Personally I think that they should have been left in - some people still dream about these topics! A lucky number for each dream category has been added too, although I'm not sure how these should be used.

The entries in this encyclopedia are detailed, for example the entry for cigarette include: enjoying a; half-smoked, in hands, holding a; lighting a; loose cigarettes; man and woman smoking together; rolling a; smoking a; stubbing out a, with determination; suddenly repulsive to you; trying to give up; women dreaming of smoking a.

As with any system of interpretation, I believe that dream interpretation is a highly individual subject. I would recommend that if you want to find out more about the author and his style of interpreting dreams you can visit his website at www.zolar-thoth.org. You can click on the `Dream weaver' section to interpret your dream online.

I would recommend Zolar's Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams to those of you needing help in understanding the various symbolism found in dreams.

Interested in learning how we dream or what our dreams mean? Do our dreams have a deeper meaning? If you're curious in answering any of these questions, you'll enjoy this book.

This book informs us of the process of dreaming and different activities that may occur during sleep. No one had discovered the true reason why we dream, but we do know we need to dream.

Also the book has a dictionary of dream interpretations in the back. Your dreams do mean something, sometimes the meanings of our needs aren't obvious, so they disguise themselves in our dreams. Knowing what your dreams mean will help satisfy your inner desires, ones you don't even know you have.

4 out of 5 stars Most Helpful for Dream Weavers.......2001-10-27

I have perused many dream encyclopedias, but this is my favorite because it offers several possible interpretations for each dream symbol - you choose the one that best fits your dream and your life. Also, the interpretations are deeper and more spiritual than those found in many other books. This book was my main source of guidance in writing DREAM WEAVING: USING DREAM GUIDANCE TO CREATE LIFE'S TAPESTRY.

4 out of 5 stars It makes sense.......2000-06-17

I've used this book several times to interpret dream images and it almost always gives me good answers. It doesn't delve into new age nonsense or into fortune telling like so many other books on the subject do. Instead it combines psychology and mythology in a way that makes dream images understandable and relatable. I only wish that the book was even more extensive.

5 out of 5 stars This one hits the mark.....................2002-12-03

If you fancy yourself as a "no-nonsense" individual; someone who likes to get to the point sooner than later, this is the symbolism/dream interpretation book you've been looking for.

Mr. Todeschi cuts right to the chase. His explanations are to-the-point and very informative.

Upon reading the review for this book and "Dictionary of Symbolism" by H. Biedermann (and, of course, actually reading the two), I most definitely favor Mr. Todeschi's book. While "Dictionary" goes more in-depth, has a picture-appendix of the symbols covered as well as adding them throughout the text, and provides an overall history for each symbol, I wasn't thoroughly satified after reading the descriptions. "Encyclopedia", however, gave me the impression that the author wanted to not only explain the symbol, but show me how it might be interpreted in several simple ways.

One might argue that "Dictionary" does the same. This may be so. To this I would have to say that I felt Mr. Todesci's approach to be more helpful. On top of that, although I haven't done a count comparison of symbols each book contains, I would have to say there are more in "Encyclopedia".

When I was looking for an answer, the text showed me the way. It gave me that warm, happy feeling that
some therapists and psychologists might consider a goal for healing one's inner person: closure. (Everybody let out a relieving sigh.............)

5 out of 5 stars The best book for understading your dreams.......2000-07-26

I've used Mr. Todeschi book for about 8 months for insights in interpreting my dreams. I've been recording dreams for 20 years, and I've found this book to be the best single source for insights into the possible meanings of the images. Even if none of the potential descriptions in this book rings true for a particular dream (and the book recognizes that the meaning of a symbol can change), what is provided is often an excellent trigger for seeing other possibilities. Using this book has also helped me make that step to not just understanding the individual symbols in my dreams, but to be able to piece them together to form a coherent message. The Encyclopedia of Symbolism by itself will not interpret your dreams anymore than a book on how to paint will create a painting for you, but it is a great help, and should be in the library of any serious dream/visualization interpreters.

5 out of 5 stars A must have in any dream research!.......1999-04-19

I found this book to contain an element lacking in other dream interpretation guidebooks. It allows for latitude in personal interpretation which is essential to accurate dream interpretation. Unlike other books of this kind the author gives several possible meanings, allowing the reader to determine which definition is applicable in her or his life.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST DREAM BOOK ON MY NIGHTSTAND!.......1999-04-19

The book is really about dream interpretation. It is an excellent guide to working with dreams and is used in my dream interpretation class as the primary resource book. It makes dreamwork accessible by anyone!

1 out of 5 stars Entry Level and Disappointing.......1999-04-15

This book was quite a disappointment. I was looking for commentaries of substance in the definitions of symbolic words. This book was so basic that it is of almost no use at all. Most of the definitions are 30 or so words long and I believe a simple dictionary would do just as well. If you're a youngster in grades 5-10 this may be of use. Fortunately, I also bought "Dictionary of Symbolism" by Hans Biedermann which is much more thorough and detailed. Check out my review on that.

Analysis Of Dreams

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The only dream book you will ever need.......2007-08-06

This is the ultimate dream book. This book is huge and there is so much information in it. It is the only dream book you will ever need.

5 out of 5 stars Analyze Your Dreams.......2007-04-21

Well, did you ever have these dreams that you just KNOW mean something? I mean, they're different than the jump-around nonsense dreams. Every so often I do, and I thought it would be fun to get this book and check themout myself. (I used to ask a girlfriend who was pretty good at dream analysis. Now I do both--look it up AND ask my girlfriend. Then I look to see how the 2 analyses match up. Where are they the same? And did she come up with something I missed?) Anyway, it's fun. Sometimes dreams throw something up in our face that we need to address in some way.

With all that said, this is a pretty impressive book with some good information. It is a full sized, hard cover 678 page book. We are talking some serious information here. Of course, you should probably read the whole book, then play with it by looking things up. No, I did NOT read the whole book. Here's how I use it:

Let's say you have a dream. You are walking across a bridge. Under the bridge is lots of water and the water is rather violent. You walk across the bridge without fear and you make it to the other side, unhurt.

OK. So, you go to the index in the back of the book and you look up "bridge and water". "Bridges" appears on 5 pages, so you look them up and read. "Water" appears on about 16 plus pages, depending on what you were doing with the water (traveling on it, drinking it, etc.). You start reading and see if it makes sense. Of course, this is the dollar store analysis I'm giving you right now. You may have more stuff in your own dream, and when you go to the page, there are often other questions.

So water symbolizes emotions and opportunities for enrichment. In Greek mythology, river crossings are often associated with death or a journey into the unconscious. Crossing a bridge indicates an ability to move forward and achieve the success you long for. It represents your underlying strength to cope with difficult challenges. The bridge is a potential link of your past with a possible future.

So, if I was analyzing this dream, I might conclude (depending on any additional circumstances in the dream) that I was moving forward into the future and was quite capable of handing anything (emotions, etc) that came up in my transition, even if the "waters" became turbulent. And not only was I CAPABLE, but I successfully crossed over the bridge/achieved the transition. At this point, I might look at other factors in the dream and see if that analysis makes sense to me based on what is going on in my life.

Don't buy this book if you're a worry wart and you are gonna read a bunch of negative crap that will depress you.

Do buy this book if you're interested in analyzing your dreams to either learn more about yourself and/or just for fun.

If you want a dream analysis book, this one has a heck of a lot of info!

Book Description

We spend a third of our lives sleeping, with much of the night filled with dreams. Peculiarly vivid, disturbing dreams leave behind impressions that are hard to dismiss. But what are nightmares? And what significance do they have for the dreamer? Questions like these have been asked and answered in all time periods in all of the world's cultures. The Nightmare Encyclopedia examines ideas about bad dreams found in different parts of the world, in different periods of Western history, in recent clinical research, in current theories of the occult, and in popular films. Most of the world's traditional societies are taught that our souls leave our bodies and travel to other realms when we dream, so maybe nightmares are the result of getting lost in one of dreamland's bad neighborhoods. In medieval Europe, it was thought that demons could attack and rape human beings in their sleep. In contrast, modern psychologists tend to view nightmares as repressed conflicts that return from our unconscious to haunt us in our dreams. This book also includes interpretations of dream symbols found in nightmares.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From historical overviews to a personal inventory of common nightmares.......2006-04-21

Plenty of books have been written on dream interpretation, but few provide a specific, centralized focus on nightmares as does THE NIGHTMARE ENCYCLOPEDIA: YOUR DARKEST DREAMS INTERPRETED. Here are insights ranging from historical overviews on dream state theories and ideas to a personal inventory of common nightmares to help readers understand their underlying messages. Four hundred entries discuss universal symbols, spiritual teachings, and the treatment of nightmares in film music and the arts, providing an excellent blend of background and reference.

2 out of 5 stars A Hodpepodge of Dream and Nightmare Related Information.......2006-01-27

"Dreams are the language of our souls. The sights, sounds, and sensations we experience in our dreams speak directly to us, and for us, while we're unconscious. While it is mysterious, and sometimes even frightening, this intensely personal, private, and intimate dream world ultimately provides a way for us to make sense of our conscious, waking lives." - From the book

Nightmares often occur on the heels of traumatic or stressful events, robbing individuals of the precious necessity of sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause further physical, mental, and emotional stress, creating a troubling cycle. In serious cases, such as post traumatic stress disorder after catastrophes or war, therapy can be helpful in dealing with the painful emotions brought on by these events.

However, it's possible to be inspired and encouraged by nightmares, such as deciding to stop smoking or choosing to make better decisions for health and well-being. In The Nightmare Encyclopedia: Your Darkest Dreams Interpreted, author Jeff Belanger-creator of Ghostvillage.com-has created a repository of dream symbols, articles, interviews and entries dedicated to sleep and dreaming. Especially of interest are universal elements found in nightmares, as well as psychological, metaphysical, and spiritual aspects to dreams.

The author has arranged the entries alphabetically in this 357-page paperback volume, and some of the territory covered includes:

* Mythology, fairytales, and beliefs from around the world
* Psychological theories and therapies
* Famous dream psychologists such as Freud and Jung
* Spiritual and metaphysical explanations of dreaming and nightmares
* Actual dreams and analysis
* Nightmare symbolism
* Artists and their paintings, especially in terms of nightmarish imagery
* Philosophers, spiritual leaders, and literary figures and what they have to say about dreaming and nightmares

Some parts of The Nightmare Encyclopedia make for engaging reading, e.g. the section on urban legends ("some people do not dream" and "it's dangerous to awaken a sleepwalker", both which are NOT true). However, other parts are very general ("this dreams means that the individual is under stress and fears the future") and yet others are downright inaccurate. For example, in the entry Tarot, it says, "For tarot readers, the Star signified abandonment and loss."

I'm a professional tarot reader with over 50 tarot books on my shelf and I have NEVER encountered an interpretation like this! In fact, The Star is considered one of the most positive in the entire deck, signifying hope, serenity, "calm after the storm", inspiration and clarity. How such a gross inaccuracy made it into this book is beyond me.

I rarely have nightmares; yet, when I *do* have disturbing dreams, the effect quickly wears off. However, I had some weird elements come up in several dreams last night, and tried to look up the symbols in The Nightmare Encyclopedia. Some of the elements weren't in the book, others were entirely irrelevant given the context of my dream, and the rest was general and quite vague.

If you're interested in nightmares and nightmarish imagery, including mythology, psychological theory, and cultural references to dreams and nightmares, this may be a good book for general reading. However, if you want to understand and interpret your dreams-and you'd like a decent dream symbol dictionary-A Stream of Dreams: the Ultimate Dream Decoder for the 21st Century by Leon Nacson is about as good as they come. Of course, *you* are ultimately the best decoder of your own dreams, considering symbolism is often personal and contextual. Nevertheless, if you want a little help from a straightforward, engaging book that includes modern symbols (like cell phones and computers), try Stream of Dreams by Nacson.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book........2005-10-28

I had this book on my wishlist for a year waiting somewhat impatiently for it to become available and now I finally have the pleasure of owning it.
"The Nightmare Encyclopedia: Your Darkest Dreams Interpreted" is an interesting, highly informative source on the meanings of our most feared and dreaded dreams. The interpretations for each of the many symbols in this book are pretty literal and very straightforward. The book includes true nightmarish accounts from real people, folklore, and a lot of fascinating if not somewhat disturbing imagery.
I have been interpreting my dreams--as well as other people's--for years. Throughout these years I have acquired quite a few books on dream interpretation, but always wondered why there weren't many--if any--books on deciphering the meanings of our "darkest dreams". I feel very fortunate to have finally found this book. It makes for a great reference book and a source of very interesting historical information. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in dream interpretation or perhaps..the darker side of things. Nightie night!

5 out of 5 stars Best dream book I've seen so far.......2007-09-19

I think this is the best dream book out there-at least what I've seen so far. It has almost every thing you could think (or dream!) of. What I liked was the dreams come in various entries. For instance, barber can be: going to the barber, being a barber, calling barber to your home, having a shave by the barber, having hair cut by a barber. That's how it is. That way it is very helpful & much more accurate. And I think that it's meanings really are accurate bcz twice the meaning it provided my dream, seemed to be correct.

1 out of 5 stars Weak and lacking.......2004-06-23

I bought this book hoping I could find out the meanings to some of my dreams but I got nothing. This book's interpretations are weak. And half the time when I have a dream I can't find what I'm looking up since the book is lacking a lot of common keywords.

I would advise people to avoid this book and not waste any money on it.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but Could Be Better.......1999-03-21

This book is a little helpful when trying to figure out what something in a dream means. It's cool to see the background for something but it doesn't always necessarily help. The dream symbol dictionary doesn't have enough symbols and I often am finding that the things I am dreaming of aren't in there.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!!!.......1999-03-17

An excellent resource for any lay person looking for infomation on dream meanings and symbols!
