Book Description
Focused on building linguistic skills and comprehension through creative introductions to contemporary life and cultures in Germn-speaking countries, WIE GEHT'S? Eighth Edition is the clear choice to prepare your students to communicate in German-in and beyond your classroom! Now in its Eighth Edition, WIE GEHT'S? remains one of the most popular introductory German programs in the country. As the authors-both native Germans-show students how the German language actually works, they encourage cultural awareness and the acquisition of a functional vocabulary that effectively prepares students to continue their study of German.

Returned Workbook.......2007-10-10
It wasn't what I thought it was. The way it was listed I thought it was the book and the workbook, but it was just the workbook.
Good Beginner book.......2006-01-21
This is a good book for those who want to teach themselves about the german language. also i belive it allows for good insite into the german culture and customs. Maybe not the best book for practical german language, but for the beginner its great!
Pretty Good, but a few shortcomings........2005-08-24
I used this book for two semesters of German language courses in college. While its not a bad book, the memorization of tables and stuff can be daunting. I thought the descriptions were precise and clear, and the grammar exercises were okay. The problem was the application of grammar was too 'precise'. Ie. there was the constant memorization of tables. This book is ideal for an engineer. Overall, its also a good reference book and is well laid out. A nice touch was the culture topics; however, I would have liked to see something focusing a bit more on conversational practice.
Not what I'd hoped for.......2004-10-22
I've started taking German in college in preparation for graduate school. So far, I am not impressed with Wie geht's?. The charts and diagrams are not clear, the grammar is presented seperately from the culture and vocabulary sections, and the exercises are mindless. I also find it fairly useless to be given anywhere from 20-60 vocab words in one lesson with the grammar as an afterthought. I would much prefer to be presented with the grammar lesson and then the application of it through vocab. I can always look a word up in a dictionary down the road, but more importantly I need to be taught the grammar!
Outmoded approach, not at all communicative.......2001-01-09
Wie geht's has many strengths--including its use of realia and images of modern Germany. But its over all concept is totally outmoded: no German teacher coming out of an education program will have been trained in this methodology, which is not at all communicative, and most of the language exercises built in are of the "mindless" variety--you don't have to understand what you're doing to perform the task at hand.
Ultimately, I think "Na Klar" is the best textbook selection on the market today.
Book Description
Now in its third edition, Kontakte: A Communicative Approach is the highly successful beginning German text based on the Natural Approach. The Natural Approach, widely associated with Tracy Terrell, introduces students to language inductively, by exposing them to vocabulary and structures in the context of lively activities. In this communicative approach, grammar explanations and practice are an aid to learning the language, not an end in themselves. The Natural Approach in general -- and Kontakte Third- Edition in particular -- are highly communicative and create a spontaneous and low-anxiety classroom atmosphere in which the focus is first on comprehension, then on communication. Kontakte Third Edition emphasizes culture as well as communication, with a variety of boxes, readings, and interactive culture-based activities. The third edition of the KONTAKTE program also offers separately a new listening comprehension tape that instructors can use in class as well as a new video, new interactive software, and additional new supplements.

Bad Deal.......2006-08-24
Make sure you see what edition you're getting. I got stuck with the Second edition, and had to buy a new fifth edition. I'm kinda mad about it because the seller didn't make it clear, and I had to spend twice as much on a new book, plus the price for the old one. I'm never getting books from Amazon again.
Good for a continuing student who needs a review.......2005-09-22
This book set was used for my most recent German class. I found it helpful, but I was the only one in my class with any background in the language. Most of my classmates found it confusing. I wouldn't recommend it for someone just starting to learn German, but it's certainly a good "review" for speakers who need to brush up on their skills. Side note: the spoken examples on the cassette tape supplements are very fast, and have an odd accent, but are necessary to complete all work in the Arbeitsbuch.
Kontakte: The gateway to fine German.......2005-09-07
This very detailed book is a perfect solution for a textbook in German. The format and layout is easy for one to navigate through the book. As studied through many German texts and this one stands out for being so clear on the subject.
This book is useless!.......2005-01-20
I am a regular person attending a NON-competitive community college and let me tell you all that this book stinks! It is entirely in German and makes no sense at all. Nobody in our class can even figure out what they want you to do. I have taken two years of German in high school and I am totally lost in the very first chapter. I think this book is poorly organized. If you must use this book for your class, I would consider looking around for a German class that you can transfer in which does NOT use this book!

This seller was the best seller I have ever gone through!!!!!
She sent out the book within a day of purchasing it. She was very easy to get in touch with.

A perfect slim primer, espcially if you've been out of school for awhile.......2007-09-15
I took German in college in 1979, so when I started a refresher German course earlier this year, I picked this up in a college bookstore. Wow, what a life saver! Since I did not have sentence diagramming in grade school, my language skills have always been intuitive, with this book it's all laid out neatly and easily in front of you. EGFSG cleared up many questions that I had regarding clauses, objects of a preposition, etc.
Sit down for an hour or two and read the short concise chapters, it's an amazing little book. It even helps your English day to day.
Who says Grammar has to be boring?
excellent tool, but to get the most out of it.......2007-09-01
go to the publisher's website and download the .pdf file for your german text. go to [...] and select german. you'll find an adobe acrobat file that provides the mapping between the chapters in this text and several popular college level german text books.
the mapping is very detailed, even down to mapping subsections in each text.
my only regret is not reading the preface sooner to learn about the free file. I'm sure my previous studies could have been much more efficient.
other than that the text is great. chapters are short and should knock the rust off your grammer, if you haven't forgotten too much. if you have, then don't be afraid to pickup another text just on english grammer to supplement your studies. this text will help you refresh your grammer enough to learn german grammer, but it isn't meant to teach you english grammer. for that there are many reasonably priced texts of similar length that you can consult as you progress through your studies.
don't think you have to relearn english grammer before starting to learn german. just relearn it as learn your german.
good luck.
A must have ..........2007-03-26
This book is very down to earth in that it makes english language comparisons with very short little mini quiz and examples. Good book to have.
Excellent Introduction & Revision.......2007-03-09
A great re-introduction to English grammer. Clearly laid out, easy to follow with abundant examples. It is vital that the English-speaking student of German has a clear grasp of their own grammer before they can begin to understand the complex grammatical rules of the German language. This book does a good job of showing the relationship between English and German grammer.
English Grammar for Students of German.......2006-01-30
This book simply and concisely highlights the important grammar structures that appear in German and English. Explanations are easy to follow and practice works is helpful. Excellent resource for anyone learning German!

One of 'those' books.......2007-10-01
Basically, this is one of those books that is fine for classroom teaching, in that it's perfectly fine as long as you have an instructor.
But, there is absolutely no reason why it should cost as much as it does (it's way too expensive here on Amazon, and $200+ at my campus bookstore!). And, there's no reason why the publisher should make minute changes every year and call it a new edition.
Oh, wait. There is one reason - it's a racket just like all of these kinds of books.
Completely Useless, unless it's all you have........2005-01-19
There's really no point to owning this book if you're enrolled in a German class, and there's absolutely no reason for a self-learner to pick this up otherwise. There's a lot of people who say this book "is great if you're in a class / using video / using audio / great teacher / etc etc..." and the truth is, when you have that much enrichment anyway, you don't need a very good book (which is the only time when using this book is acceptable). And the "listening comprehension" CD? It's much more useful as a coaster. A coaster that might cost you a whole paycheck.
Gripes:
-Never provides ANY blocks of words/pronunciations in chapters (even when it does, it tends to have whole phrases translated, not word-by-word breakdowns like you need, especially in the beginning). You have to learn 90% of your words on your own, and then try to figure out what's going on in the book based on your own knowledge. This is an almost absurd problem considering the price.
-Randomly tosses around different dialects of German with little division. Without a professor keeping you informed, you might not even notice some of the differences. My fiancee was dismayed to learn that I wasn't learning the same dialect that she knows (and her dialect is High German, which is the one you're "supposed" to learn in an introductory class). I think I'm learning a more Southern or Austrian dialect. Is that the book's fault or my professor's? Since the book doesn't help, I have absolutely no clue!
-The CD is truly worthless. It barely follows the book, and doesn't provide ANY quick access to any necessary elements. It doesn't have access to very much in the way of pronunciation at all- nearly all of the CD is composed of text application of the words with little or no motivation except as practice for what you should have learned before (except there is no "learning before"- in the book or CD). Inexcusable.
-No answer keys. The book might have you learn new phrases with something like "figure out which of the following phrases are greetings or goodbyes", and unless you ask a professor, you might never know. Again, it's just amazing that a book would cost so much and not contain something like this.
-How can you learn a language when the book never really teaches anything new, and just keeps expecting you to apply knowledge that it doesn't give? It makes no sense!
Counterpoints:
-It's... kind of pretty. If you don't mind that a lot of the pictures aren't properly explained. And those pictures are example exercises in the chapter... yeah, you'll mind.
If you HAVE to have this book for your class, just hope it's a good class. This book seems near-worthless for trying to teach yourself, which as any student knows, is critically important to ANY language class. Listen in class, and don't expect the book to be of much help.
So what do I reccomend?
Even if you class doesn't reccomend it, try to find the two workbooks/lab manuals that go along with the book. Frankly, I've found that they sometimes do a better job of teaching than the book does. AND they have answer keys to help you check your progress. Sadly, however, the manuals don't come with the necessary listening CDs, so you're still going to be left out in the cold for most of the experience. Again, just ridiculous.
Overall:
-If you're taking a German class, and this is the book, you don't have much choice anyway.
-Which is to say, if you're not taking a class and you're learning on your own, virtually any other book does a better job.
Good book - but not to be used by itself..........2004-10-18
I am currently enroled in begining German. This book is not the kind of book you can teach yourself from. You need lots of help along the way - which is fine. But the book does not stand on it's own. Also - the labs were horrible. I think you can do better for the money.
Not bad!.......2002-07-15
We use this book for german 1 and 2 here at duke. Let me start off by saying that I've never been very skilled in learning foreign languages. As such, I have a tendency to lash out at the books that are assigned the job of teaching me in this area ;) This book, I think, gives the reader every possible advantage in terms of learning the language, I think. The grammar is explained clearly, and in a logical order. I'd give it a 5, but as I said, I don't like having to learn foreign languages ;)
Wonderful College Text.......2002-04-25
This is a textbook for classroom use as opposed to self study. My two semesters of german at Penn was quite enjoyable; the textbook introduced a lot of grammar points clearly and you build vocabulary through studying themes for each chapter. I can't wait to go to Germany this summer. If your instructor chose this book for you, it is worth the price. The workbook and lab manuals are pretty easy to keep up with, so you won't feel too lost learning a new language.

Improving Your Comprehension of German.......2001-07-13
This book abounds with guided activities. Activities often build on each other. The instructions for most of the activities are in English. The activities are designed to help one learn to find information in german text of various forms, to aid in building vocabulary, grammatical skills and understanding, and to familiarise one more thoroughly (both linguistically and culturally) with the following topics and more:
Love, Marriage, and Partnership; Typical Men and Women; Family Life; The Older Generation In Business; Problems of the German Youth; Foreigners in Germany; The Search For America; Germany and the Germans; Pollution and Environmental Issues; The Computerworld; Berlin in the Separated Germany; The Thousand Year (Reich) Kingdom; Distinction Between the East and West;
The publication date is 1991, so the cultural information isn't completely up-to-date. For those who haven't any first-hand information on Germany, this information gives a good start.
This book builds on your moderate knowledge of German. It aims not only at improving one's German, but also at helping one learn to understand written German in which one may not recognise every word. There are also dialogues designed to help imporve the construction of one's spoken German.
