4 out of 5 stars Excelent vocabulary data base.......2007-10-15

This is an excelent book to learn a lot of vocabulary you can have imagine,
the only problem you need to scroll up and down, left and right to see the whole image, this was corrected on new release.
I recommend you to buy the black cover, this is the blue.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR ADULTS LEARNING SPANISH .......2007-02-07

I don't normally review any items on Amazon but I must take the time to review this picture dictionary. I am 57 years old and using the dictionary for myself. I like it because the vocabulary words are grouped by subject: the kitchen, eating out, the bedroom and items relating to those subjects.

I have found this dictionary quite enjoyable. I love studying Spanish even though my memory is not what it used to be.

3 out of 5 stars is good to learn english.......2007-01-11

La verdad me parece que este libro esta mas dirigido para personas que quieren aprender ingles. Yo lo compre pensando que podria ensenarle espanol a mi esposo.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-03-21

As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource. I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner). This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish.......2006-01-03

I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

This is not a good book for young children - too many things to look at on one page...EXCELLENT resource for adults and teens, though, who are eager to increase vocabulary and are confident with pronunciation. I use it a lot in my Spanish classes, and even as a reference, when wanting to boost the vocabulary list for the week.

For the younger child, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD.

Book Description

Produced by Oxford's American Dictionaries Program, and drawing on the expertise of scores of American scholars and advisors, The New Oxford American Dictionary sets the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country. Here is the most accurate and richly descriptive picture of American English ever offered in any dictionary. Oxford's American editors drew on our 200-million-word databank of contemporary North American English, plus the unrivaled citation files of the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary. We started with American evidence--an unparalleled resource unique to Oxford. Our staff logged more than 50 editor-years, checking every entry and every definition. Oxford's ongoing North American Reading Program, begun in the early 1980s, keeps our lexicographers in touch with fresh evidence of our language and usage--in novels and newspapers, in public records and magazines, and on-line, too. To provide unprecedented clarity, the entries are organized around core meanings, reflecting the way people think about words and eliminating the clutter and confusion of a traditional dictionary entry. Each entry plainly shows the major meaning or meanings of the word, plus any related senses, arranged in intuitive constellations of connected meanings. Definitions are supplemented by illustrative, in-context examples of actual usage. This major new edition of The New Oxford American Dictionary includes a guide to the pronunciations on every page, a new etymology essay by Anatoly Liberman, completely updated and revised maps, and more than a thousand new entries, covering everything new in our language from low-carb to warblog and beyond. This edition of The New Oxford American Dictionary also includes a lexicographical first--a portable version of the entire dictionary that can be downloaded to your PDA or smartphone! Have the authority of The New Oxford American Dictionary at your fingertips, wherever you are. Keep the print edition by your favorite reading chair and download the portable version to your phone or PDA, and you'll never be at a loss for words. All Oxford American dictionaries use an easy-to-use respelling system to show how entries are pronounced. It uses simple, familiar markings to represent common American English sounds. The New Oxford American Dictionary is designed to serve the user clearly, simply, and quickly, with the precise guidance you expect from Oxford University Press. With in-depth and up-to-date coverage that all users need and expect--for reading and study, for technical terms, for language guidance--it continues the tradition of scholarship and lexicographic excellence that are the hallmarks of every Oxford dictionary. 5 out of 5 stars A wondrous dictionary.......2007-08-04

I previously used Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition religiously. A couple of weeks ago, they did not have a word that I was looking for. That's when I decided that it was time for a change.

Oxford always had a good reputation for refrence books. I can see why. This book has many more listings. The only thing about this dictionary that I am disappointed with is that it does not have thumb tabs. I find those helpful to have in a dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 1-Volume English Dictionary.......2007-07-07

The New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD) is the best 1-volume English dictionary available. I will compare this dictionary to the American Heritage Dictionary (2006) as these two dictionaries are the best 1-volume English dictionaries available.

In my opinion, the NOAD is clearly a better dictionary for reasons listed below. Generally, the NOAD's entries are longer and more detailed, hence the reader gets more information. The American Heritage definitions are almost too concise (usually too concise for my preference) although many people may prefer the shorter definitions. Each dictionary will have a number of lesser know words (and even some more common words) the other dictionary will not have (especially scientific words, geographical locations, and newer words), so one dictionary is not superior as far as having a significant amount of more entries. It appears to me the NOAD has more entries, but even if it doesn't, it is still a better dictionary.

Some comparisons of American Heritage Dictionary (2006) to the NOAD (New Oxford American Dictionary)(2004)

-The NOAD is 1,959 pages A to Z, while The American Heritage 2,006 pages long A to Z. The American Heritage does not list anywhere that I can see how many entries it has. The NOAD says it has over 250,000 entries. The font of the American Heritage is smaller but it is just as easy to read as the NOAD's font. The NOAD uses 3 columns per page, the American Heritage uses 2.

-The American Heritage has some newer words not found in NOAD, such as Red state, Blue state, Sudoku, Texas hold'em, but don't get the idea though this makes it better than the NOAD. Here are some words (some relatively recent) the NOAD has that the American Heritage does not have: macarana (the dance), tamagotchi (the Japanese toy), October Surprise, Hamas (the militant Palestinian group), heat-seeking, (as a missile) tarte Tatin, solid south, spaceship earth.

-Although the NOAD lacks color, it has many effective illustrations, and it even devotes full pages to maps. The American Heritage is visually more appealing with its 4.000 color pictures complete with a nice design layout.

-A big advantage of the American Heritage is that it details some interesting etymological histories of about 400 common words. For instance the American Heritage dictionary gives a 13-line history on the word Kangaroo, explaining that it is not from an Aborigine meaning "I do not know," and then proceeds to explain the true history of the word. The American Heritage also has usage notes on over 750 synonyms, 100 notes on regionalisms, 500 notes on usage issues, and 50 notes on the social dimensions of some words.

-Although the NOAD does not give these selected, interesting word histories, overall the NOAD etymology is done much better than the American Heritage's etymology. The NOAD's etymological explanations are consistently more detailed, and will frequently add a time frame when the word came into use, e.g. early 17th century (although it will not give specific years), something the American Heritage does not. The NOAD will give folk etymology of some words, and like the American Heritage will give notes on proper usage and help the reader/writer use the right word with synonyms.

-One huge advantage the NOAD has over the American Heritage is that it adds many , many more common word phrase origins associated with a word, including proverbs, clichés, etc. For instance the word `pie" n. the NOAD will list the phrases "as easy as pie" "as sweet as pie" "a slice of the pie" and "pie in the sky" (and giving definitions of each phrase) while the American Heritage just lists and defines "pie in the sky." The NOAD will also give the origin of a few phrases such as "flash in the pan" (from the failure of gunpowder to ignite properly to fire a gun). The American Heritage does none of this with its phrases, but note that the American Heritage Dictionary publishes a separate book on word phrase origins, which is probably the reason it places little emphasis on them in its main dictionary.

-The NOAD is superior in the biographical entries to the American Heritage. Each dictionary will have some people the other will not, but when they are similar, the NOAD almost always gives more information in a biographical entry. The NOAD is also superior in geographical entries. food entries, and political terms. The NOAD is also better at including entries one would normally find in an encyclopedia, for instance Tamil Tigers, Hammond Organ, Abbey Road are in the NOAD, but not in the American Heritage.

-The NOAD is slightly better in giving information about nations of the world. The American Heritage's entries on nations is short and very basic, while the NOAD's, though not much longer, it will nevertheless give a better history of a country than the American Heritage will.

I love dictionaries, but in comparing these two dictionaries, the NOAD to me has its pulse on the English language more than the American Heritage, and so NOAD would be my first choice. The American Heritage Dictionary however is still very good. If you love words, you should get them both to enjoy the variety each provides.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary.......2007-04-13

English being my second language I have great use of this excellent dictionary in my work as a translator. Good explanations and lots of phrases and expressions. A nice feature is the "The Right Word" boxes that explains the subtle differences between closely related words (e.g. view vs. opinion).

4 out of 5 stars The New Oxford American Dictionary.......2007-03-10

This is a great dictionary. I love it because I have referred to it many times since purchasing it and have always found the answers to what I am looking for. It has helped me with game show questions, crossword puzzles and word debates between my husband and I. It is so much more than just a dictionary. The only reason I did not rate this dictionary a "5" is because of it's size. It is quite large and bulky, but then again, if it wasn't - it might not contain all the answers I was searching for. This is truly an informative book which I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Best dictionary I ever owned.......2007-03-08

Without a doubt, this is the very best dictionary for the home and small business. I have tried several over the years and found the New Oxford American Dictionary to be the easiest to use and READ. It is a litle heavy but 2000+ pages of up to date definations are worth the weight.

I use this book a lot even for adult ESL students. I find this a great resource for one of the basic ESL techniques--describe the picture. I've also used the verb pages to practice tenses. Pages on prepositions are also very good. The pictures are clear and easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2004-01-27

I still like the original better, but the New Oxford Picture Dictionary is a good resource and is on my list of recommended visual dictionaries.

4 out of 5 stars The new oxford picture dictionary.......2000-01-09

I have been teaching ESL to Spanish-speaking people for over 6 years and this has been a very useful aid in teaching. Now that I am teaching Spanish to English-speakers it is not as useful as it is when I teach English. Spanish words are not updated and I always have to change at least three words per page.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teaching English!.......1999-08-06

I just returned from Mongolia, where a group was teaching English to the Mongolian children. This was a very valuable tool both for both in-class instruction and indepenent study. The real test is that the New Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual version) was a real hit with the kids!

3 out of 5 stars dictionary does not have any pin-yin, not useful unless you read chinese.......2005-10-18

i bought the dictionary, hoping to use it as a reference tool to teach my 4 year old chinese. i am a native speaker myself. it is a good reference, if you can read chinese characters. But since it doesn't have pin-yin, you really can't use the dictionary to learn how to pronounce any of the words.

4 out of 5 stars Great for lower level students........2000-04-28

I use multiple versions of this book to help my students (mostly beginning and intermediate) enlarge their English vocabulary. I am currently using the Spanish-English, Chinese-English and Korean-English versions. I believe that they are good books, and very useful as supplements to ESL classes. THE GOOD: 1) The book is organized nicely for teaching beginning level students. It is organized into 12 units, such as: people, housing and recreation. This makes it easy to find a good vocabulary list for students to concentrate on. 2) The full color illustrations are nice, and make it easy for students to understand the word, even if they are using the monolingual edition. It is nice for students to try to figure out or learn the word without depending on the written translation. 3) Each page has some teaching suggestions at the bottom. While I don't always use them, they have come in handy for giving my students extra practice at using the new vocabulary. 4) There are some nice indices at the back of the book. These cover everything from irregular verbs to geography to alphabetical listings of the vocabulary. THE BAD: 1) While there are many good words, there are also a lot of common words missing. I find myself using a regular English-language dictionary to explain some words to my students. 2) Some of the translations aren't that great. My students have found errors (or just an outdated word) in both the Spanish-English and Korean-English versions. 3) This dictionary really is for beginning or intermediate users. My advanced students don't really like using it, as they already know most of the words in it. OVERALL: The Oxford Picture Dictionaries are great tools when used to supplement a lower level class. But if you are teaching more advanced students, maybe some other language-English dictionary would be better.

1 out of 5 stars Not useful for English-speaking students of Chinese.......1998-12-24

The New Oxford Pciture Dictionary (English/Chinese) is not useful for English-speaking students of Chinese. There is no transliteration for the Chinese characters, which are printed in a very hard-to-read light blue ink. This dictionary could be useful to Chinese-speaking students of English. However, they would need a good knowledge of the Western alphabet and sound system to use it.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not really for English speakers........2007-08-28

Although its great to have pictures and words together, especially for those of us who learn faster with visual aids, this book is difficult to use for native English speakers. Why? Because accent marks are not provided, nor declensions, nor the two dots over the "e" that distinguish between the letters "yo" and "ye." In other words, in order to benefit from this dictionary, an English speaker has to look up every word in a separate dictionary to find out all the above information when learning the words. Otherwise, what is learned will be only part of what is needed. So, since English is my native language, I give this book 2 stars. It would be great to find a book like this one meant for learners of Russian.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Quick Reference.......2007-08-15

I took Russian for nine years in the Chicago Public Schools, and this was one of my greatest references. Granted, it is not meant to be the ONLY tool a student of Russian will use. I compare this book to Richard Scarry's Greatest Word Book Ever, except with Russian words for everything pictured. And don't be fooled by the "Picture Dictionary" title. This is not merely for children. I am 24 years old, and trying to re-learn some Russian, and am still using this great book. This would be a great reference for any student of Russian.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-01

As a native English-speaking, beginning student of Russian language, I am finding this a very useful book. The format is great for me because I learn well visually. Each page is a busy picture (e.g. "In the Living Room", "Outdoor Activities") with relevant items in the picture numbered. Under the picture is a legend to provide the name of each object from the picture in English and Russian (in Cyrillic). It is a fantastic resource because there are so many objects and situations: just about every action and activity in the house, most of the animals in the zoo, etc...

For native Russian speakers, the book provides English pronunciations. Unfortunately, the same is not given for the Russian words (though once I master Cyrillic, I imagine this will be unneccesary.) Overall, this is a great reference for English and Russian speakers to build their vocabulary and easily answer their own questions as they come up.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful part of a language program.......2006-12-13

As an ESL tutor I simply love these books. Each page provides a lesson's worth of vocab for practice in sentences. The latter pages (eg. prepositions) are less useful when tutoring someone illiterate in their own language, especially if the tutor is not bilingual, but because the pictures are so clear, even point-and-say usually works. True, these books don't have any pronunciation guides for Russians learning English or Americans learning Russian, but they are an excellent tool for tutoring; I don't expect everything from a picture dictionary that I would from interactive language software.

4 out of 5 stars Russian/English Picture Book.......2006-07-04

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars flashcards would be better.......2005-10-13

I would rather have these in a flashcard format, so that English and Spanish words were written on the back of the card. There needs to be more cards, also, to cover more topics in the book.
Overall, for what the cards are, they serve their intended purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Good for their intended purpose.......2005-06-02

I don't understand why some people don't understand that the Oxford Picture Dictionary and its various accoutrements are intended for helping people learn English. The bilingual editions are for people who want a little extra help by having the words in their native languages in addition to the English words. They might also be useful for an English person learning one of those other languages, but that is not the intended (principal) use.

So, on to these cards. I find them handy to use in the classroom on occasion, to review vocabulary, often in a game-type of environment. The problem, and the reason they only get three stars from me, is that there just aren't enough cards, and they are taken from all oveor the book, so there are just a few cards for any one vocabulary area. This diffusion is a major limitation to these otherwise useful cards.

1 out of 5 stars These aren't for learning Spanish.......2004-07-03

As a learning aid for Spanish, these playing cards should get no stars at all. Although they're sold to accompany The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Spanish, they are set up for people learning English, not Spanish. The cards are divided between picture cards (a picture of a tomato, for example) and cards with the English words for those pictures.

Book Description

An American dictionary--in the Oxford tradition. Produced by Oxford's U.S. Dictionaries Program, and drawing on the expertise of scores of American scholars and advisors, The New Oxford American Dictionary sets the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country. Oxford's ongoing North American Reading Program, begun in the early 1980s, keeps our lexicographers in touch with fresh evidence of our language and usage--in novels and newspapers, in public records and magazines. To provide unprecedented clarity, the entries are organized around core meanings, eliminating clutter and confusion, especially in longer entries. Rather than a litany of numbered senses, the structure of each entry plainly shows the major meaning or meanings of the word, plus any related senses, supplemented by illustrative, in-context examples of actual usage. In short, The New Oxford American Dictionary is designed to serve the user clearly, simply, and quickly, with a full measure of information value and precise guidance. Truly a revolution in the art and craft of dictionary-making, The New Oxford American Dictionary provides the in-depth and up-to-date coverage that all users need and expect--for reading and study, for technical terms, for language guidance. It continues the tradition of scholarship and lexicographic excellence that are the hallmarks of every Oxford dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars This is a dictionary I'd take with me to a desert island:) .......2006-03-23

My friends call me a "dictionary freak" and indeed I am one. I love dictionaries and everything about them:). I hope to become a professional lexicographer some day. I find NOAD one of the greatest English dictionaries (with New Oxford Dictionary of English being the ultimate single-volume dictionary). I bought the 2001 version in Poland in 2004 only to find 2005 edition in local bookstores a year later. Still, I am glad I have the first edition (by the way, some nice human being put all the added words in NOAD 2ed. on her webstite so I got all the new words added to the later edition - it's over 80 pages A-4 format). Anyway, I like dictionaries that do not claim to have the largest number of words added. If you want new words use Google as your guide. If you want slang words, get the newest slang dictionary. If you want specialist term, go to a specialist dictionary. That is of course not always possible and a general-puropse dictionary are to serve as a "bible" of everything. This is a misconception. There will never be a dictionary which will have all the words we look for at a particular moment.
Dictionaries like NOAD and ODE are great in that they present the language as it should be and do not urge language users to violate all the possible rules and speak "in a cool way" just because it's the 20th century.

And thank God for headwords in black color!!!!!!
I personally hate the "blue" revolution in dictionaries.

For me, as a foreigner, the pronunciation in NOAD is rather odd. I have learnt English with IPA (International Pronunciation Alphabet) and it sometimes takes a while before I figure out the pronunciation. But for that, I have a different dictionary (that is Pronunciation Dictionary by Wells from Longman).
Everybody looks for a dictionary that will satisfy their needs -be them intellectual, esthetical etc. So in the end, it is a truly subjective choice, (which does not mean some dictionaries are objectively very bad in many respects).
With the era of technology in full development, it might seem that printed dictionaries will soon become obsolete. I hope it will never happen!!!!
I enjoy reading all dictionary reviews in Amazon.com. I find out important details, but most importantly I realize that there are lots of people who DO care about using their language correctly.
Finally, should I ever end up on a desert island, NOAD would be THE book I'd take. The beauty of any (good) dictionary of any language is that you can always read it in a different way depending on the situation.
I'm waiting for a few new editions of some dictioanries but, in the end, I will stick to the ones I already possess. "Older" does not mean worse or less comprehensive. But, again -it is a matter of opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Very Handy.......2004-04-28

This is my third favorite dictionary - behind the 20 volume OED and the Shorter OED. There are several things I like about this dictionary - first, it is a convenient size, not too unwieldy to carry from room to room. Second, the innovative way of defining the words (using core meanings and distinctions of these meanings) makes the dictionary very readable and accessible. The layout is clean and organized, with occasional drawings or photos.

The emphasis of this dictionary appears to be contemporary usage. There is a brief origin listing after many words, which is useful; however, the historical quotations that are descriptive of the OED or shorter OED are mostly absent.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Book - One Minor Flaw.......2004-01-11

I love the layout of this dictionary! For its price, it can't be beat in my opinion. No - no colored pictures, but this is a dictionary, not an encyclopedia -- you use it to look for words. There is a bonus "reference" section at the end which has several uniquely American things like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and various other goodies.
While this dictionary excels in ever aspect I am concerned with over the American Heritage Dictionary, it has a minor problem in that several of the pages throughout the book have an almost imperceptable bleed of print (almost like they closed the book before the print was dry or something) from one page to the page opposite. Affects about .5% of the pages and is barely noticeable -- but I checked the library's copy and they have the same problem. Barely noticeable, but still a minor nuisance. I installed the CD on my computer. It is fun to punch in a word every once in a while and see what the definition is, but I still will use the book more often simply because my computer is not always on -- and of course with Scrabble at the kitchen table, nothing beats having the authoritative tome at your elbow -- ready for a challenge from your ignorant opponent!

4 out of 5 stars NOAD vs. NODE.......2003-12-21

I would be very interested to see a comparison review of the New Oxford Dictionary of English (NODE) and the New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD). I'm having a hard time deciding which dictionary to buy. I live in the USA, though I grew up relying on Oxford dictionaries with British spellings, so this doesn't bother me. The most important things for me are (1) quality of definitions, (2) number of head words, and (3) number of example sentences. One of the words I use to assess a dictionary is how it defines the word "grok"; if the definition is clear and easy to understand, a reference to Robert Heinlein's book "Stranger in a Strange Land" along with 1st print year is included, and sample usage is given, then that dictionary is pretty darn good in my book. :-)

So, given this, which dictionary would you recommend? Right now I'm leaning towards NODE simply because it has more pages (2176 vs. 2064), but obviously I need an opinion from somebody who can get their hands on both dictionaries. Please contact me directly at tom [underscore] xyz [at] yahoo [dot] com. Thanks in advance!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Tool for Student or Adult.......2003-06-25

I would never have believed I could get this excited about a dictionary! I bought this last year for my fifth grade son when he and I both became dissatisfied with the Merriam-Webster School Dictionary. The M-W was our first attempt at upgrading from his picture dictionary but my son, an average student, struggled with the lack of usage examples. I found that the M-W system of listing the most archaic meanings first was also a hindrance, sometimes maddening. What a joy when the New Oxford American arrived. My son instantly warmed to their profuse usage examples and I was impressed with the more intuitive presentation of words which have multiple meanings. Finally, I found that the font type is very easy on the eyes.

These picture books are excellent. Unlike this one, most of them are in black and white line drawings. This one has color pictures which is better. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with a foreign word.

I purchased this to help communicate with a Korean exchange student. I discovered it wasn't helpful to me at all for that purpose. I'll donate it to the school library however! Shipping and speed of delivery were great!

5 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Aid!.......1998-08-23

Best book I've found in nine years to teach Korean speakers conversational English! The book is clear and concise with great pictures. The only change I would make for future publications would be to add the phonetic spelling of each word using Korean characters. This would be a plus in addition to the Korean word(s) for the pictured items. I highly recommend this book for all Korean speakers that are serious about learning English.
