Customer Reviews:
Finally, a SAT novel that has a tough vocabulary.......2006-02-26
My Mom bought me five different SAT novels and after reading all of them, I can say that this was the only one that had a lot of vocabulary words that I didn't already know. This book was filled with hard words and didn't waste my time with words I knew back in fifth grade. I liked the tricky twosomes section in the back that points out the difference between similar sounding words like "aesthetic and ascetic" and "inimical and inimitable" and "ingenious and ingenuous". This was a great way to learn the really hard words.
A Lifesaver of a Book.......2006-02-17
I was in a total panic to learn this awesome vocabulary list of 250 words and happened on this great book. Thanks Dr. Chapman for getting me through it painlessly and quickly (or as you would probably say, with alacrity! At the same time I really enjoyed the story itself. Note that Dr. Chapman also wrote "The Marino Mission". I am reading that one next time just for fun.
A great way to learn a lot of words!.......2006-02-13
I purchased the Mayan Mission and the Marino Mission for my granddaughter because they were the only SAT novels that were written as a series, offering a strategy to acquire a lot of vocabulary words. I was delighted that my granddaughter actually seemed to enjoy these books and that she took the initiative to work her way through the exercises and learn an impressive total of 1600 words.

A seal at school!
What happens when Sammy, the adventurous seal, leaves the zoo for the day? He goes to the city, finds a school full of kids and new things to do -- and he even learns to read!
Customer Reviews:
great for early readers!.......2007-07-14
my 4 yr old loves this story, the illustrations are so cute, and the story moves along very well. it's great before bedtime since it's a happy ending and nothing scary or too adventurous to get their little minds wandering as they're supposed to be falling to sleep. my 7 yr old likes reading it to her little brother.
Sammy The Seal By Syd Hoff.......2007-07-03
This book brings back childhood memories. I loved the book now and I still do. My kids enjoy the colorful illustrations and the fun story line. It's an adorable book. Another great book by Syd Hoff.
Sammy The Seal.......2007-01-11
I bought this book as a momento for my daughter-in-law, and also so she can share it with my newest grandson. Amazon's service was excellent as always, and the book arrived promptly and in much better shape than I could have imagined for one of it's age.
Sammy the Seal.......2004-06-18
One day, Sammy the seal decides that he wants to go outside of the zoo to see what life is like in the outside world. During his adventures he walks along a busy street, swims in a man's bathtub, and goes to school. I think it is really cute how people don't even notice there is a seal walking down the street, or if they do they don't act like it is any thing out of the ordinary.
The pictures in the original 1959 version are very cute, full of expression and well colored. In the original the colors are shaded in, and almost look as if they were colored in by some very artistic kid with crayons.
The story flows wonderfully, even if some parts don't quite make sense. It is a very cute, if rather nonsensical, story.
Loggie-log-log-log
Classic story for children.......2004-05-21
Basically the same story as "Danny and the Dinosaur" and not as ingenious. However, Hoff's illustrations are always a joy to look at. And the scoolteacher is definitely hot. I had a crush on her as a child, and still do.

Customer Reviews:
A GREAT help in my Multi-Level Classroom.......2002-09-23
I have never seen the older editions mentioned by other reviewers, so I was not at all disappointed with this one. I have about 3 or 4 groups going at once in my adult classroom (NOT MY IDEA). My principle text for my level 1 group is Side-by-Side One. The students buy the Side-by-Side text and Workbook. I keep a class set of Grammar-in-Action in the room, so the students do the exercises on their own paper. After I introduce a chapter in Side-by-Side, I can easily find a chapter in Grammar-in-Action-One that reinforces the vocabulary or grammar topic of choice; the table of contents helps me quickly find a topic. But what I love most about the book is the variety of exercises that my students can work on while I am busy with my other groups. The exercises cover listening (GET THE TAPES, they are great and really help in a multi-level class), speaking (terrific pair exercises: interviews and info-gaps), and plenty of writing (truly reinforces the grammar and vocab). There's just a little bit of reading, but I like using the True Stories series for reading practice, anyway. The exercises in this book teach! Of course, I go over the exercises beforehand and after, but the students really enjoy helping each other and working together. The students who apply themselves really learn a lot, and with relatively little effort on my part.
Trusted old friend is gone.......2000-04-05
I must agree with another reviewer in that I am very disappointed with the 'NEW' Grammar in Action. The wonderful simplicity of the series which made it unique is gone. It appears that in an attempt to hve the book mesh with their other titles, the publisher wanted make it look like every other textbook. And that is what they have done. My trusted old friend of a beginner ESL/EFL book is gone.
I am disappointed.......2000-03-08
I have used the orginal Grammar in Action books, and I am very disappointed in this one. The wonderful, clear simple pictures are missing and have been replaced with tiny crowded ones, or worse, no pictures at all!
excellent grammar supplement for high school learners.......1999-05-15
We found this book to be an excellent compliment to Heinle and Heinle's Voices in Literature and Making Connections. We are using book 1 and book 2 to review grammar and focus on problem areas such as prepositions and personal pronouns. I would recommend these two volumes as supplementary text for use at the high school level for any teacher who feels that students need more focused and concentrated practice in English grammar. Sindbad in the Land of Giants
ASIN: 0887764606
Release Date: 1999-08-28 |
Book Description
For centuries, readers have been fascinated by the stories of the Arabian Nights. Perhaps the best-known is Sindbad the Sailor. He discovers an island paradise, but it is actually a giant whale. He sees a huge mountain. It is, in fact, the egg of the famous Roc, a bird so huge that she can carry an elephant in her talons. Sindbad manages to escape from Roc’s nest by tying his turban to the bird’s leg and is transported to the final adventure in this volume: the Valley of Diamonds. It is a story of high adventure and wit overcoming any obstacle.
Customer Reviews:
Charming Art.......2005-09-03
The art in this book is very charming, but we found the story-telling to be a bit stiff in places. Still, it's a great way to introduce younger children to Sindbad.

Gators and Imagination, What a Combination!.......2005-05-04
Zack gets a package from his uncle who lives in Florida. Eagerly he opens it to find an alligator key chain. He takes it to the sink to wash it and it comes to life, growing to the size of the sink. The gator says her name is Bridget and Zack puts her into the bath where she showers and grows even more. Soon she is a full-sized girl gator and she is hungry. Zack feeds her all the food in the fridge, then they go out to play, amazing Zack's friends. As the day draws to a close, Bridget starts to shrink and by the time they get home, she is back to her key chain size. "Don't forget to water me tomorrow," she says.
This book will take your toddler on a terrific ride to where only imagination can go. My son Devon and I have been looking at the pictures for over a year, but now that he is almost three and knows all his letters, I am reading with my finger under the words and he is following along and he still loves Bridget's story as much now as he did when we weren't working so hard on the words.
This is a book for beginning readers. The words are simple, grammar too. Bridget's story is sure to keep your toddler interested, so much better than the "See Spot Run" kind of early readers. If you want your child reading before Kindergarten, and I do, then this book and books like it are very good additions to your toddlers reading arsenal.
Jack Priest, Dad in Training
Fun for readers of all ages.......2000-08-10
This book is a delight -- it is a great book for emergent readers, but it is more fun to read out loud. Zack's alligator has attitude -- and the giggles from my daughter made it a book we had to add to her personal library.

Book Description
Readers will be swept along with Rama and Raja, two Indian elephants as they travel between mountains, behind waterfalls, and across the seas in Kathi Appelt’s simple, clever story. Bold illustrations and a tale told in prepositions add up to a great balloon adventure sure to delight young children.
Customer Reviews:
One More *5 Star Vote* for "Elephants Aloft".......2005-06-17
We just wanted to add our voices in support of this excellent children's book. My son and daughter (3 and 5) really enjoy this beautiful and heartwarming story, and we highly recommend it.
Great for entertaining, and for teaching toddlers and preschoolers positional prepositions! Well worth the price.
"Elephants Aloft" and the joy of prepositions for kids.......2004-06-16
A preposition is a "function" word that typically combines with a noun phrase to form a phrase which usually expresses a modification or predication. However, in "Elephants Aloft" prepositions like "above," "between," and "below" are not combined with noun phrases but rather with delightful illustrations of elephants in a balloon. Now, if a picture of a pair of elephants in a balloon is worth a thousand words, then there would be reason to believe that in those thousands words there would be at least one noun phrase.
Written by Kathi Appelt and illustrated by Keith Baker with pictures done in Liquitex acrylics on illustration board, "Elephants Aloft" begins before the title page with Auntie Rwanda in Africa sending a letter to her nephew and niece Rama and Raja in Asia. If young readers do not know the different between an African Elephant and an Asian Elephant, then this is an opportunity for them to find out if they pay attention to the differences in the ears of the two traveling elephants and their aunt. Each picture of the journey has a single word, written large, and lots of details (the colorful bird that delivered the letter to Rama and Raja appears in each picture and young readers should enjoy looking for him).
This book is ideal for beginning readers since it emphasizes a single word on each page and kids should be able to make the association between words like "beside" or "around" and the pictures of the elephants in their balloon going by the Taj Mahal or coming around a snow capped mountain. Granted, little kids are not going to understand exactly what a prepositions is (I had to look it up), but they will still pick up the idea that all of the words appearing in "Elephants Aloft" are similar in terms of how they function.
Note: The back flap of "Elephants Aloft" says this was Kathi Appelt's first book. You should check out some of the other ones, not just the picture books intended for kids, but some of her poetry books intended for older kids and (dare I say it) adults as well, such as "Poems From Homeroom" and "My Father's Summers."
My favorite book........2003-01-30
This is probably one of my top 3 favorite childrens books ever. I could sit and look at the illustrations for hours. It has a fun story using very few words. I have purchased many copies as baby presents and gifts and they are always greeted with delight.
We love this book.......2001-03-06
My 2 1/2 year old enjoys reading this book, as do my husband and I. The pictures are full of detail, and each page allows for more than one discussion about the preposition word printed on the page. As the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words" - we have a great time discussing each picture and talking about what is happening.
Did anyone notice the GROUNDNUTS?..........1998-02-02
Apart from being able to create a new story at each reading, Darren (3½-years-old) enjoys playing "Spot-The-Groundnut" on every double-spread. The first person who spots each nut gets a treat - to eat a REAL groundnut! That's where the fun is... Watch out for the last nut!!!!
