The Complete Visual Dictionary of Star Wars.......2007-09-26
This book is extraordinary. The pictures are sharp and extremely detailed. There are explanations of many characters that are only seen in the background scenes. I highly recommend if you're a Star Wars fan. My 4 year old won't give it up.
My Star Wars fanatic loves this book.......2007-09-26
I bought this for my 6 year old who is a Star Wars FREAK. He sat down with this book immediately and has not really stopped looking at it since. He can barely read, but he loves examining all of the characters, and the way they are broken down and labeled is very exciting to him. He likes to see everything that he's seen in the movies, and video game, in full detail.
I can't comment on how this book is similar or different to any other book, but I can say, it's very detailed, it covers a lot of information and describes alot of the relationships and uses of the characters & items. My 6 year old can identify way more than I can. This book is well set up, with loads of information and LOTS AND LOTS of details full color high quality photos which is just what we were looking for.
Good luck!
A Must-Have for any Star Wars fan.......2007-09-21
My son constantly wants to look at this book, and he is only 6 and has never seen any of the movies. That pretty much says how good this book is. I grew up with the original Star Wars movies, so looking through this book is like looking into the past for me. It is well put-together, very concise with a lot of nice photos and a plethora of Star Wars information. An excellent resource for any Star Wars aficionado.
Star Wars is a Five star choice for the ultimate fan.......2007-09-09
This book is just fantastic, and it is worth every penny. I originally bought it for my friends son who loves Star Wars. The kid walked around with the book under his arm like a bible! He never put it down. I recently bought it for my own two elementary age boys and they love it just as much. This is wonderful gift to get for any Star Wars fan -- Once again DK has cornered the market on wonderful visual books for young children. Their books are so well executed and so wonderfully edited, they know exactly how to appeal to this age group by giving just enough information with out making it too simple. An adult fan would actually love this book too. It's a great purchase.
My 9-year-old loves this book!.......2007-09-03
I purchased this book for my 9-year-old son who has been a Star Wars fan for a few years. He has spent hours looking through the book on his own or alongside his friends. I have never seen the movies and I have little knowledge of the people in them, but I could easily learn A LOT from this book if I wanted to. The pictures of the people and tools/weapons are great! I also like the fact that they show pictures from movie scenes that depict the people or the tools being discussed on that particular page. This was a great price for a large hardcover book with great details and pictures!

Watch the Star Wars trilogy enough times and you'll find yourself straining to catch all the little details. Not the subtle plot points (Darth is Luke's dad, check; Luke and Leia are brother and sister, check), but all the cool gear and gadgets that keep flashing in front of the camera. Like what are those pointy things on Boba Fett's kneepads? And what's with all that ammo on Chewie's bandolier? And does an Imperial Probe really need that many legs? Finally, we've got some answers.
David West Reynolds, a boyish Ph.D. in archaeology who looks like he just rode in on the last Bantha, has catalogued the artifacts and inhabitants of the Star Wars universe with the same clinical thoroughness one typically reserves for studying Mesopotamia. His oversized, eye-pleasing picture book is packed with scrutinizing photos of actual props and characters from the movies, complete with systematic, scientific labels. And Reynolds's friendly, pseudo-academic style seamlessly blends new information with old. (In the Sand People description, you can't help but hear Alec Guinness's voice when Reynolds reveals that "Sand People ride in single file to hide their numbers.") In a few instances, the book shines an embarrassing light on the movies (Max Rebo is clearly no alien lifeform, just a poofy, blue elephant muppet), but the countless close-ups of thermal detonators, imperial blasters, and gaffi sticks more than make up the difference. --Paul Hughes

Great pictures........2007-09-07
I have 2 little boys who love Star Wars. I like the pictures in this book. The words are too advanced for small children but I try to ad lib. My boys love to look at the pictures.
The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars.......2007-08-13
I bought this book and the complete guide for the entire saga. I was more impressed with this book than the other. This book was missing atleast the one character I was looking for Niem (Sullustan) that flew the Falcon with Lando in 6. So I looked him up on the internet and found his info readily availble on some star wars website. I was hoping that they would atleast list the name and race for ever character shown, but they don't.
Excellent book!.......2007-03-22
This book was just what we needed. My five-year-old son has developed a sudden interest for Star Wars, and since he's too young to watch the films, this book was perfect for him. Excellent pictures, everything is well explained, all the major points of interest are covered.
Very informative!.......2007-02-08
This was one of my very first Star Wars books and I half credit it with my burgeoning interest in the expanded Star Wars universe.
Includes great pictures and information such as what those little knobs on Darth Vader's chestplate are for to what exactly Salacious Crumb (that little Kowakian monkey lizard that works for Jabba the Hutt) does! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then read this book!
Great for the enthusiast, beginner/amateur/expert and all!
Perfect gift for my 10 year old son.......2007-01-02
I bought this book as a gift for my 10 year old son who is a serious Star Wars buff. He told me he likes it because it has a lot of information about the characters, weapons, vehicles and technology.

The Ultimate Visual Dictionary certainly lives up to its name. With a broad scope that covers topics as far-reaching as tempura paint, chemical reactions, and the equestrian saddle, this book manages to attain an inclusiveness that will bring a smile to the faces of even the most die-hard researchers. But though its topical range is amazing, The Ultimate Visual Dictionary's real attraction is ultimately its illustrations; containing more than 5,000 photographs and 1,000 detailed visuals connected to 30,000 terms, it provides a link between words and pictures in a way that few other books can or do. The photographs alone will keep any reader entertained for hours, but be warned: the pictures are presented in such a brilliantly clear and distinct fashion that you may start to believe you're aboard the HMS Alacrity or being chased by a full-grown male lion with a wide-open mouth.
Book Description
Updated and expanded, this easy-to-use reference covers everything from prehistoric Earth and science, to sports, art, and music. Also includes more than 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations, and visual definitions of more than 33,000 terms.

Ultimate Visual Dictionary .......2007-05-22
The dictionary proved to be a great gift to my grandchildren (range in ages 3-8)and afforded me a terrific opportunity to interact with them on magnificently illustrated subjects in a manner that fascinated them (and me.) In that respect, it is a great gift for children of all ages.
Buy the bigger one!.......2007-03-13
When I received the book I could not believe how small the book was. They simply shrank the regular book to almost half the size of the regular one. The fonts for the book is so small that you have bring it very close to your face in order to read it. I will return and buy a regular size book next time.
Love it!!.......2007-02-23
I got this book a couple of years ago, and I kept it on my desk so that it would be handy when I needed it. I love to look at the beautiful illustrations and reading information on topics I'm researching. The illustrations are so detailed and beautiful that it's hard to put it down once you opened it. My teen daugther also loves to borrow it.
Picturesque.......2007-01-28
I'm using this book as a reference for my fiction writing, to find more precise terms that cannot be found easily in a dictionary or encyclopedia. The detail, colorful drawings, and manageable size makes it a handy desk guide. Though you won't find everything you'll ever need in this beautifully illustrated book, it will likely lead you to discover some ideas you've never considered. I think for the price, which is very reasonable, it's worth the tradeoff.
Amazingly Comprehensive.......2005-09-18
This book is AMAZING. My co-worker, an art designer, pointed it out to me at work and I was blown away. It has EVERYTHING (surprisingly it really does) as a quick detailed visual reference. Even so far as comparing different styles of buildings and cars. Another of my co-workers snatched it up right away. He keeps it by his desk at work. I'm looking forward to getting my own copy.

Here's a science dictionary worth poring over for hours. The concise, well-written text and amazing photos and drawings in The Ultimate Visual Dictionary of Science provide an overview of science, from physics to biology, astronomy to mathematics--nine major fields in all. Within the larger sections, each fairly broad subtopic (such as "Reptiles," "Catalysts," and "Medical Imaging") gets a two-page spread. A brief beginning section introduces science as a concept and the work of scientists, while a useful section in the back bolsters the dictionary material with tables of measurements and data. The real strength of a visual dictionary is its images, and this one doesn't disappoint. The illustrations, including intricate cross sections, explanatory diagrams, and fascinating photos, are topnotch. This edition is up-to-date, with information on computer networks and mammalian cloning--a great family science reference. --Therese Littleton

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference for Kids and Adults.......2003-03-09
I purchased this book for my 4 year old son who keeps asking lots of questions. While the book may be a bit advanced and he is just learning to read, he enjoys my explaining the various topics within. This books is not for kids only and is an excellent reference to have in the home as adults can gain as much from this excellent reference. Also a great book and companion volume is the Ultimate Visual Dictionary. DK books really puts out great books and this one is tops on my list.
Excellent Resource!.......2001-09-30
A superb resource for children and adults! Excellent photos, experiment descriptions, and drawings. Covers every major science field. I use it to learn about new areas and to refresh my college level subjects such as physics and chemistry. It is simple enough for children, but includes advanced information, such as physics formulas, that makes it wonderful for adults as well. I can't say enough good things about this book!
Incredible!.......2000-12-24
I bought this for my nephew, and was so interested by it I spent half the night reading it!
My wife finaly started looking through it and liked it so much she wanted it for Christmas for herself!
It covers anatomy, biology, chemstry, earth science, physics, astronomy, computers & electronics - and much more - everything!!
This Book Will Make You Smarter.......2000-12-24
If you have read my other reviews you know I don't give out five stars very readily. This is a five-star book.
There are about 170 two-page, profusely illustrated spreads that give you the basic background on practically every topic in modern science.
Read one of these two-page spreads every other day. It will take you ten minutes or so. In less than a year you will be dramatically better informed about science. There isn't a more pleasant way to get so much smarter, so quickly.
This is a book every home should have.
Exquisite reference........1998-11-08
The "Ultimate Visual Dictionary of Science" may well be just that. For this exquisite reference brims with 1,600 color photos, 200 illustrations, and 15,000 completely accessible terms. This mammoth work covers everything from Physics and Chemistry to Ecology and Computer Science, and it "allows you to browse the thematic sections at your leisure or to use it as a quick-reference visual dictionary." Everyone will have a favorite section. I particularly enjoyed the Earth Sciences, with its stunningly-clear iilustrations of coastlines and the ocean floor. And in the Astronomy and Astrophysics chapter, you'll find remarkable slice-away graphics that show, say, the planet Jupiter, with its hydrogen and helium atmosphere covering not a rocky surface, but a mantle of liquid hydrogen and helium! The book's layout is superb. Indeed, every page dazzles with a wealth of color and information. This is a must-purchase.

Customer Reviews:
A Visual Learning Experience.......2003-10-01
I've been a fan of the DK Oxford Illustrated American Dictionary for a few years now. The DK Ultimate Visual Dictionary is the next step. It is not a dictionary in which the words are organized with pictures in alphabetical order. However, you can look up the words and find the corresponding page numbers, so finding words is relatively easy.
This is a book in which 14 sections explain everything from The Universe to Calligraphy. This book doesn't include individual sentences using the words. "It shows you what each word means!" There are detailed illustrations and gorgeous photographs in rich color. Annotations surround the pictures.
In the introduction, they explain how if you wanted to know what the bone at the end of your little finger was called, a normal dictionary would leave you still wondering. With this dictionary, all you have to do is look up "hand" and you find your way to page 211. This is the section on the human body. Turn a few pages and you start to see amazingly detailed information. By page 230, you will see the hand in full detail and find a picture with the annotation reading: "Distal phalanx." The "Visual Dictionary" gives you access to thousands of words used by architects, musicians, doctors, scientists, sportspeople, astronomers and mechanics.
The 14 Sections include:
The Universe - This book explains why the Milky Way appears brighter in the southern sky than in the northern sky. There are pictures of everything from the solar system to the individual planets, stars and black holes.
Prehistoric Earth - Kids will love the pictures of the dinosaurs and the constant movement of the earth's crustal plates shows how the continents have moved across the earth's surface.
Plants - This book contains perhaps the most interesting explanation of photosynthesis and pollination I've seen yet. Kids will enjoy reading about the Venus Flytrap or how a seed germinates.
Animals -The skeletal structures and internal organs (mostly drawings) of a wide variety of animals are all shown in pictures. I loved the part where they show the hatching of a quail's egg. The rabbits and rodents section will be of interest to anyone who has these cute animals as pets.
The Human Body - If you want to know where the organs in your body are located or are even just trying to name various parts of a body, this section is essential for writing, research and home study projects. You can grab this book and see what an instructor is talking about when she says "deltoid" or "external oblique." The section on the development of jaw and teeth was very helpful in understanding how you eventually get your set of 32 permanent teeth. You see it all in a series of pictures. The Development of a baby will fascinate children.
Geology, Geography, and Meteorology - There is a section devoted to minerals. Kids will also enjoy the section on volcanoes and fossils. I always wondered how caves form.
Physics and Chemistry - A full periodic table and visual explanation of chemical reactions, light, electricity, atoms and force and motion are given here.
Rail and Road -A Volkswagen Beetle is disassembled, modern engines are shown in sectioned view and the mechanical components of a typical car are shown with all the parts spread out across the page. The section on "Bicycle Anatomy" will be of use to anyone who loves to ride and fix their own bikes.
Sea and Air - Everything from Viking Ships to the anatomy of an iron ship, jet engines and helicopters.
The Visual Arts - Finally an explanation on how mosaics are created. The budding artist will also enjoy the section on painting.
Architecture - I was fascinated by the Medieval castles and churches. Someone spent a lot of time tracking down the models for buildings from Ancient Rome to modern times. What a collection!
Music - Trying to learn how to read notes or interested in the names of all the instruments in an orchestra? They even take a guitar apart and sow you a variety of acoustic guitars.
Sports - An extremely detailed section on every main sport you can think of. The playing field, rules, equipment, everything is shown. They even have pictures of each type of swimming stroke. I'm impressed! The authors thought of everything.
The Modern World -Ever wonder what the internal components of your Cell phone, PDA, or even vacuum cleaner looks like? The section describing the Internet was in itself worth the price of this book. Information on cloning technology, political maps of the world, time zones and metric-imperial conversions makes this very useful.
Each sections starts with a table of contents and then every entry has introductions that explain the purpose of the illustrations and annotations.
Since I am presently reading a book about health and the function of our cells, page 216-217 was very helpful. I first looked up "Mitochondrion" and was sent to page 217 and 239. There before my eyes was a cell in full detail. There is also a series of microscopic pictures of a wide variety of cells on the right hand side. The actual cell takes up most of the two pages.
In fact, this dictionary has more than 31,500 terms and 6,000 color photographs and illustrations. This is the dictionary I would have loved to have had as a teenager. It would have made all my classes at school much more interesting.
Highly recommended for teachers, libraries and families with inquiring minds.
One of the most useful and beautiful books I've ever read. Put a copy on your coffee table and enter the world of knowledge once a day. Soon, the world will just be far more interesting. You will feel that X-ray vision when you look at normal objects in your home and environment.

Stitch Sampler - The Ultimate Visual Dictionary to Over 200 Classic Stitches.......2007-01-05
This book is fantastic! It is easy to understand with excellent pictures and directions for the stitches. I have one and bought a second one for a present.
Good Bye for Stitching Lovers.......2006-03-21
This is a very useful book for stitching lovers. It has very good illustrations and explains the stiches very clearly.
Very good but ...........2003-05-03
does not do SILK embroidery stitches at all. If this is your thing, as it is mine, you will be very sorry here. 2 silk stitches and that's all. But if you do crewel and needlepoint there is literally nothing as good as this. Very clear explanations and good shots of the stitches themselves with alpha lettering to guide you...Everything is in full colour and that helps. While the word Sampler is used, there are no projects in this book as it really is a dictionary like Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery of Stitches. The difference between the two books is Mary's version shows the stitches as both embroidery and needlework while Lucinda tells you that they can be worked either way but does not show them. I guess in the end that's why there is no silk :-)
Excellent Book for learning new stitches.......2002-10-28
This is a fantastic book that covers a tremendous amount of stitches. This is a very valuable source in my embroidery library.
A very good book of "cross-stitch" embroidery stitches.......2002-06-07
Very good book, pictures are shown in color with very good illustrations of the stitches. Variations for various stitches are also shown which are appealing. I am an embroidery lover, after having this book I feel I can make thousands of beautifull unique pieces. A great book in all for beginners as well as for others who do embroidery. I would definitely recommend this book.

Learning French.......2007-10-05
The Ultimate French Review is the single best book I know for learning and reviewing basic principles of French grammar. It uses multiple and increasingly complex illustrations, and comes with a series of well presented CD's with French speakers. For those who have had some initial training in the language, this volume is the next logical step.
Extraordinaire! Sensationnel! The Ultimate French Review and Practice w/CD-ROM.......2007-07-23
I have loved the French language since I studied it in college and have tried to practice it whenever possible, traveling, seeing French films, reading newspapers in French. I bought French language books for review but always felt I was at a standstill, never really improving. It wasn't until my daughter started studying French in high school and I was looking for books for her that I began to make progress. That was the day I found The Ultimate French Review and Practice in a bookstore.
The book explains all the grammar points of the language so clearly and concisely and the exercises use real situations and everyday, authentic language. The culture notes are fascinating and connected thematically to the exercises. The articles and ads from French language newspapers with their accompanying exercises have really helped me to read and understand. I have been so motivated and inspired by this book.
I couldn't imagine anything better until I was in a bookstore and voilà, there was The Ultimate French Review and Practice with a CD-ROM. Several weeks into my use of the interactive CD-ROM I'm so excited that I have to write in to let people know about it. I'm working my way through the hundreds of exercises that are all new and different from the exercises in the book. I can practice all the grammar points of French and the exercises are referenced to the chapters in the book so it's easy to check my answers and find explanations. The diagnostic and review tests are extremely helpful.
What I especially love about the CD-ROM are the Audio Modules which are great for improving your listening comprehension skills. They have dialogues or narrations spoken by native French speakers. If I don't know a word I can consult the Glossary or the pop-up definitions. I find it very helpful to repeat after the speaker the Ten Key Words and Expressions that precede the audio passages. The topics of the audio passages are very varied and there's a wealth of idiomatic vocabulary based on the topics. My daughter, who is now studying French in college, is dazzled by what I can say about shopping, choosing a career, traveling by plane, eating in a restaurant, even falling in and out of love. She says she hasn't learned nearly as much in her courses and plans to borrow my CD-ROM! Je crois que je vais avoir un succès fou (as one dialogue character says)!

Dificil man!!.......2007-10-01
This book is alright, but buyers take note...this is NOT a book for beginners. It's got some really tricky stuff in here with verbs etc. Good review for the 2nd year student maybe?
SayHola dot com has used this book...........2007-09-24
Our online course at SayHola dot com teaches you how to speak the Spanish Language but this book is a great tool for practicing and building Vocabulary. We recommend it.
Agreed. Better with Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-08-14
The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice is excellent, but not at all complete. The dialogs are helpful, but I found that they lack spontaneity, creativity, and it is sometimes difficult to maintain a high level of interest because of the somewhat stale presenatation.
Still, the Book and CD Rom are very good, thus the four star rating.
One note: I would highly recommend you take Amazon's advice and use this along with Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs and Text. This course is a real powerhouse of authentic spoken Spanish and will teach you to use everything you learn in Ultimate Spanish Review in the real world.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour
Great grammar book.......2007-07-17
This is one book that no Spanish student should be without. It's a great book to have for learning grammar or even to keep as a reference.
Fantastic Product! The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice with CD-ROM.......2007-07-15
Just about one year ago I wrote a review of The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs with CD-ROM (see my review, July 26, 2006). I was a long-time user of The Big Red reference and when it came out with an interactive CD-ROM I had to let everyone know how fantastic it was!
Well, here I am again this time letting people know that The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, another incredible book that I've been using successfully for six years, is now accompanied by a user-friendly, easy to navigate interactive CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has hundreds of new, varied, and challenging exercises that allow me to practice all the grammar points in the book. What's great is that if I'm in doubt about an answer or grammatical topic I can check the reference to the chapter in the book. The Diagnostic and Review Tests are excellent gauges of what I know and need to brush up on.
I'm really excited by the listening comprehension program. Each Audio Module consists of a dialogue or narration spoken by native Spanish speakers. The Ten Key Words and Expressions are a great introduction to the passages. I listen to them and repeat them after the speaker. Hearing them first and knowing what to listen for make understanding the passage easier. The passage has neat pop-up definitions for highlighted words and if I don't know any word or expression I can activate the Glossary.
I love the audio passages I've worked through so far and I'm amazed how much useful everyday Spanish I've added to my vocabulary. It really helps to listen to Spanish speakers in real situations. I'm a marketing director and often have to speak Spanish with our Latin American clients. "Una conversación telefónica" has proved enormously helpful to me.
The characters are so real, I feel I get to know them. Some scenarios remind me of my own experiences with my husband and children buying and fixing up our house, or talking about a wedding and relationships with my friends, or going through security at the airport in Madrid.
I'm having a fun time learning and practicing Spanish and feeling much more confident using the language in all kinds of situations thanks to The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice with CD-ROM.
