This book is a "must have" for any new bookseller!.......2007-10-05
This book is a "must have" for anyone learning to sell online. It answers every question a new seller may encounter. I just started selling online and this book has really helped me! I keep it by my computer and reach for it every day! I want to give the best service possible to my customers and what a better place to learn the "best practices" than from a successful bookseller! Thanks to Stephen Windwalker for writing this book!
An Informative but Outdated Book.......2007-10-04
There is a lot of information in this book, particularly if you are new to selling online. That being said, however, there much information that was also missing. In particular, the use of selling aids when scouting for inventory. I would recommend Christine Miller's book for further insight. Her book really did take me up to the next level of my business.
great great book.......2007-09-29
Lot's of useful info packed in here. I little outdate maybe as far as the online selling goes, but the info has so far been right on the money for me!
A Good Book but Not Enough to Ensure Success .......2007-07-08
I can't complain about this book, it helped me get started. After running the gambit of get rich quick scams and schemes, I started selling used books on Amazon, and made more than $20,000 my first year. So, if your skeptical about whether or not this is a real business opportunity, don't be. It really works! However, there are some things, like the history of online selling, that some of us don't have time for, and so many of the early books (including this one), don't cover all of the tools available to help sellers find and buy top-dollar books. Because of this, a few years into my success, I ended up writing my own guide, to discuss things I found lacking in other books, sparing no secrets I've learned along the way. Windwalker's book, and others, contain many step-by-step directions, and sample confirmation letters, etc., so all the set-up work is done for you. But, I haven't found a book that includes real life examples, of successful sellers, and their business/buying models. So, I decided to include profiles of different sellers and their techniques and strategies, along with a comprehensive list of real book titles, and keys to help the newcomer learn to identify books that you can buy-low and sell-high. This is one of the biggest keys to success, yet, even after reading some of the best books available, most of us start out with a few paragraphs about identifyng top-dollar books, that are sitting right under our nose at used bookstores, Goodwill, Friends of Library Stoes, and you name it. I'm sorry to ultimately be plugging my own book, when this book helped me get started and is a first rate book, but I did my best to make sure my books was the most inclusive and the information tangible, gearing it to the stay-at-home mm, because it's developed to make the most money in the least amount of time (which are two things mom's are short of), but this quality ultimately makes it perfect for anyone wanting to make the money it takes to sustain yourself and your family with a home-based, low-risk, low-overhead, low-investment, high-profit business.
Christine Miller author of How to Sell Used Books on Amazon: The Stay-at-Home Mom's Secret Step-by-Step Guide (from setting up your account, to navigating the website, contacting customers, finding, recognizing, and selling top-dollar books, and much more)
Outstanding Book for Amazon Book Sellers.......2007-05-17
This book gave me clear ideas on how to set up a book selling business. There were also many helpful tips on how to improve a business that is already going. I would buy it again.

A strong foundation.......2007-05-17
The book industry is changing so fast it takes some moxy to even try summarizing publishing, distributing, and marketing tactics, knowing that much of what is written will be somewhat out-of-date by the time the book is published (or shortly thereafter). The Complete Guide to Book Marketing offers a strong foundation of information concerning the more traditional aspects of book distribution and marketing. When read with a companion book, such as Plug Your Book: Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking (which does just the opposite), the more comprehensive picture is revealed. The importance of a strong foundation cannot be stressed enough and that is where this book shines. A good guide on book marketing written for a non-author publishing company........2007-04-02
I purchased this book about a year ago as a result of walking the aisles at Barnes & Noble and noticing its beautiful cover and stellar table of contents. At the time I was reading mostly books about how to prepare a business plan, and this book seemed to cover the marketing plan topics I expected to include in a business plan I was hoping to write. I finally got around to reading the book, but I have yet to write the business plan. Oh well.
As of late I have been reading books on how to profitably self publish. The books I have been reading say it's a waste of effort to try to get signed up with a publisher if you are writing nonfiction. They also say not to aim at bookstores as a distribution channel. They say to use the Internet and the Amazon site to sell a self-published book.
This book is clearly dated. It is written for a publishing company executive who promotes her authors' books and tries to make a living selling books the old fashioned way. And the author even admits that the old fashioned way of doing business is not going to last all that much longer. I didn't really see any helpful hints in the book that would be economically feasible for a self-publisher to do to sell her tome.
But the book is well written and informative. And its audience is broader than just publishing company executives. I think anybody who has a consulting or coaching practice would learn a great deal about marketing their practice by reading this book. The author includes solid content on word of mouth marketing, networking, publicity, public relations, and the need for a written business plan and marketing plan. I would have liked the book a lot more if it had not included the material on direct mail, advertising, and serial rights. But that's because I wanted the book to be geared toward self-publishers.
Even if you are interested in self-publishing like me, you will get a lot out of this book regarding how traditional publishing functions. And as I write this review traditional publishing still exists and competes against self-publishers. To win the race you've got to understand your competition. And this book will help a self-publisher plan to win when it comes to selling her books (and marketing her consulting practice). 4 stars!
Great for Writing or Publishing Newbies.......2007-01-09
David has written a great book for those like myself who need a little hand-holding.
He is also an engaging and helpful speaker for your writing group. He came to a Redwood Writers meeting last fall and gave generously of his time and expertise.
All-Around a Good Book.......2006-07-10
This book was helpful with sparking new ideas. It provided a well-rounded description of publishing, the interaction of distributors with sales reps, bookstores, chains, special sales, etc. It one thing it didn't really provide, at least not enough to my liking, was a detailed description of what goes into a press kit, how to write a press release, etc. If I gave this book to an entry-level person in publishing, I would feel like they need another resource to show them how to write a press release and marketing copy, how to put together a press kit, etc.
Good book promotion strategies.......2006-05-07
Basic book marketing information from a man who has thirty years experience in publishing and marketing. Gives you all the strategies you need to promote your book and gain results. The chapter entitled Book Publicity Basics is very informative - in this chapter he points out an interesting thought to keep in mind, "There are so many media outlets - both general and specialized - that almost every book and author can attract some attention."

Best for Beginners.......2001-09-11
I thought the 2nd edition would be more high level, as well as include RFP templates etc. However, the book is still very basic and really only appropriate for those with little to no knowledge of web site development and promotion. That should be made clearer in the desciption.
Lots of blah, blah.......2001-01-27
I was very disappointed in this book. It helped me very little when working on our iMarket Plan. There is a lot of text, but very little concrete, substantive information.
For entry-level marketers.......2000-10-16
This book may have some potential for a marketer fresh out of college but it will seem simplistic for the veteran marketer.
Very Handy Guide.......2000-05-17
The second edition of Kim Bayne's "The Internet Marketing Plan" builds on the structure of the earlier edition, and packs more punch, with updated examples, additional subsections and content more relevant to the Internet marketing scenario today. Just as traditional marketing needs a comprehensive marketing plan to succeed, The Internet Marketing Plan shows how a company's online marketing effort can be successful if it is a result of a well thought out Internet marketing plan.
The book along with the accompanying CD-ROM containing templates, spreadsheets, skeletal outlines, and website bookmarks make it an excellent starting point for a newbie in the Internet Marketing business, but it still remains a handy resource for practicing Net marketers.
The book helps the reader create and implement an Internet marketing plan, and measure the results. A step-by-step process helps the reader create a well-structured Internet marketing plan - right from the business overview, to budgets and implementation. Due emphasis is laid on integrating the Internet into the traditional marketing efforts - an often ignored effort of Internet marketing.

Publicizing a book, whether it's your own or someone else's, can be a daunting task. With books piled precariously high in editors' and producers' offices, how do you possibly make yours stand out? Relax. "There's no such thing as an author or book that isn't publicizable," says Jodee Blanco, who has been promoting books for nearly 20 years. "You have to be willing to tailor the campaign to fit the situation." Blanco's approach is to read the book, interview the author, then explore all possible angles. Some books are best publicized from the national level down; others fare better with grassroots campaigns. In The Complete Guide to Book Publicity Blanco explains the ins and outs of writing press kits, conducting media research, making pitches, tailoring and running publicity campaigns, and organizing book tours. She divulges the secrets to interview success, which include the author's knowing as much about the interview as possible ahead of time (it also helps, she says, not to wear plaid and not to hawk the book too blatantly). Most important, though, Blanco knows how to get a media contact to read her mail, and even to return her phone calls. Sometimes, she says, she'll "messenger [a] note with a flower or piece of chocolate. A touch of human kindness works wonders." --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
The nuts and bolts of book promotion are covered for fiction, nonfiction, hardcover trade, mass market, and trade paperbacks. Readers are told how to tailor campaigns to reach differing consumer, trade, and special-interest audiences; how to pitch the media and arrange author tours with print, television, and radio interviews; and how to produce headline-grabbing promotional events.
Jodee Blanco has spearheaded campaigns for more than a dozen New York Times best-sellers. President of Blanco & Peace, a Chicago-based public relations firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles, and a faculty member of New York University's Center for Publishing, she splits her time among all three cities.

One of the most important books on Literary PR - EVER!!.......2007-05-30
Wow.
Wait... let me rephrase that.
WOW!! Forget every other review I have ever given. With all due respect to such classics as "Jump Start You book Sales" and "1,001 Ways to Market Your Book" this book opened my eyes to the other side of the media - and how to get there. I have read and reread everything from "How to Sell You book on Amazon" to "Publicize You Book" (and hundreds of other texts), but this one book stands out head and shoulders as a MUST READ if you ever want to sell ANY books. Written TO the author or public relations specialist (seasoned or student), this book covers in depth print, broadcast, local, regional, and national media like no other book on the subject. Read all of the books I listed above - and read anything By Rick Frishman, but make sure you always have THIS BOOK within arms' reach.
Jodee knows her stuff and she tells all. In contrast to the wonderful texts above, what I gleaned from these pages was HOW TO plan out a campaign (not just a collection of nifty ideas - which are also useful in their own right). Jodee explains the inner workings of every aspect of the media, and how to approach a television producer versus a radio producer or news paper editor, and why. Moreover she gives example after example of how to write a grreat press release, cover letter, question and topic sheets, but her greatest accomplishment is her intensive work on fiction.
NO OTHER BOOK I have read comes close to covering "How To" promote fiction like this one does. I have spoken to and emailed scores of well known and respected professionals who shy away from fiction, but Jodee tackles it head on and tells you as an author or publicity specialist exactly how to research, locate, and exploit the right angles to make the media frenzy for your book. "Where is the hook?" is the greatest bane of anyone who attempts to publicize a novel. "Why should anyone care that you wrote a story?" This book is the first (and currently ONLY) I have found to address these two nefarious questions. This book changed my life. Most highly recommended.
This book is exhausting.......2007-03-17
Some books leave you hungry for more. Others leave you satisfied and content. And still others leave you literally exhausted, like consuming a Thanksgiving dinner. The Complete Guide to Book Publicity falls into the third category. When you are done consuming this wealth of information, go through and read it again, this time compiling a "to do" list. Every page will be tattered and worn with ear-marks, highlights, and scribbled notes.
Reading this book is like its own productivity test. Some may find absorbing it all very taxing, much less acting upon 10% of it. But for those who do both (read it AND act upon it), this book cannot help but improve your book publicity tactics. - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified
it was okay.......2006-07-12
The book had a few good ideas, but it was mostly overwhelming and I felt like the author tended to fan their own ego a lot.
Jodee Blanco Knows How to Publicize Books........2006-06-17
Jodee's book is incredible. So incredible I ran out of highlighters because I was highlighting so much critical information in it.
Jodee has been there and done that and it is clear from all my research that if this isn't the best book on the market it is in the top two. Way to go Jodee and thank you.

Pass Unless you ARE a Complete Idiot.......2007-05-08
First - What's good: - I was going to be snide and leave this part blank but that is unfair. It does cover the Self Publishing industry quite broadly. It will give you an overview (only) of many aspects of book publishing (and other things).
Now - The problems: - As noted by another reviewer - almost insulting. ***NO NEW information I haven't seen in several other excellent books on this field.** **NO depth.** NO real desire or help for those wanting to thinking outside the box. VERY much focused on Non-Fiction! Very little appreciation of changes to the industry since about 2003 or 2004 - its a rapidly developing world - this book is either dated or the authors would prefer not to provide insight into those changes. The **feeling** I got was 1) this is how "It" has always been done; 2) that is how "It" should be done to be good, 3) if you try anything new "It" won't be very good and you will fail. It reminded me greatly of career planning guides given to sophmores and juniors in high school (in the 1960's and 1970's) which seemed to say - don't think outside the box and you will be very happy in your 8x8 cubicle.
There are MANY other EXCELLENT books an this subject - See Aaron Shepard, Dan Poynter, Morris Rosenthal, The Rosses - take your pick. I just wish I hadn't picked this.
Easy to read, helpful book.......2007-04-02
I purchased this book over others because I have met the author at a conference. She's a nice, smart lady and is good with a crowd. I expected a lot of the book, and really didn't get everything I expected.
I did get a broad understanding of how the publishing world works. That was helpful. I would have liked more resources though - tools for marketing and distributing a book and examples of letters, press releases, etc would have been helpful. I felt like this guide skimmed too much of the surface without diving in deep.
Also, it is not as helpful to someone considering the POD route to publishing, as a lot of the book is focused on the aspects of publishing the POD's like iUniverse do for you. I would really like to see a book focused exclusively on succeeding with a POD publisher.
All in all, this is still a worthwhile read. It helped me understand publishing as a whole, and it made me question my decision to go with a POD. This was helpful - I do feel like I am a much more informed consumer (and prospective publisher) as a result of reading this book.
Very E Z to Read & Understand.......2007-01-12
The book is well written and simplified. It arrived in great shape and was delivered in a timely manner as specified. Would shop with Seller
again.
Breadth, but not much depth.......2006-11-10
Where "The Well-Fed Self-Publisher" (Peter Bowerman) covers the narrow focus of self-publishing for profit-minded non-fiction writers in a great deal of depth, Jennifer Basye Sander's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Self-Publishing" covers a lot more ground--but loses much of Bowerman's depth of detail in the process. There are plenty of reasons to self-publish, not all of which have to do with wanting to make a profit in a niche market that might not be received so well (or marketed so well) by a traditional publisher. For instance, you might want to preserve family history and memories for your loved ones. You might want to publish fiction, which operates by somewhat different rules than non-fiction (much of TWFSP could apply to fiction as well, however Bowerman makes no bones about the fact that fiction is harder to turn a profit from when self-publishing). You might have a novel idea for a gift product that loosely falls into the "publishing" milieu.
In these cases, you might find Sander's CIGSP to be an equal or better resource. She addresses her book to anyone at all who might wish to self-publish for any reason, and thus covers these aspects better than Bowerman does. There are some other areas in which the CIGSP differentiates itself from TWFSP. Sander comes from a more traditional publishing background originally, unlike Bowerman, and this informs her assumptions. Her marketing suggestions are more mainstream, where Bowerman believes in highly-targeted campaigns that take advantage of whatever niche your subject falls into in order to maximize your return on time investment. Where Bowerman keeps suggestions regarding the choices involved in publishing your book as simple as possible, Sander goes into a great deal of detail regarding everything from paper weights and colors to typefaces and even embossing choices--wonderful if you're planning on creating gift books or the like, but potentially confusing if you're going for the comparatively plain, practical books Bowerman assumes.
Sander's book does a good job of providing an overview of self-publishing and handling the myriad of reasons for getting into the business. However, if you're a non-fiction writer looking to make a serious profit, I think TWFSP would do a better job of telling you what you need to know.
Too Little, Too Late.......2006-05-28
There are quite a few positive aspects about this book. It does give you a comprehensive guide to the different forms you will need to file for different entities to get your company off the ground as well as a few marketing and distribution techniques. However, you will have to plow through close to 200 pages of pure unadulterated drivel to get to it.
I know this is a book for novices, in fact it was one of the reasons I picked it up, but it is written in such parochial language it almost bordered on insulting. The first half of the book is dedicated to explaining how difficult it is to be a self publisher and the different types of books that can be published (e.g. poetry, cookbooks, memoirs, etc...) It came off more as an extended guide a High School counselor would pass out to her students on career day than an actual guide for grown men to use to start their own publishing company.
It also should be noted that the book is geared towards the publication of non-fiction titles, especially when discussing marketing and distribution strategies. Many examples that were used would not transfer easily into the fiction literature arena. And I also found it quite disconcerting that the author referred to her own titles so frequently. It would not have been so confounding if it were not for the fact the titles she kept referring to were non-fiction titles geared towards the self-pampering of housewives and career women. She often referred to the seminars she attended on luxury cruise ships and the high end department stores where her books were made available. I could not help but wonder what would be the equivalent for fiction titles that revolved around inner city life, blue collar romances or hate crimes.
I appreciated the overall description of the nuts and bolts of the publishing industry and what is needed to actually publish a book under your own imprint. But this information was found much too late in this book and not terribly informative for self-publishers of fiction titles.
For what it's worth, this could have been condensed into a twenty page pamphlet and it would have had the same effect.

A Classroom In A Book.......2006-05-29
The way Keith Dawson handles the materials is well-written and concise. He does not waste much time going into more than just a couple real-world applications for the technologies he is explaining, but he does set your mind spinning about how they can be used to suit your needs. The information on VoIP and IP Telephony are a little dated and an updated edition would obviously expand a lot on those technologies (which were just emerging when the book was written but have become very popular in the industry now). Not only does he discuss what technologies are available (like AVR, IP-PBX, Recording, Call Queuing, etc.), he goes into a brief discription of the more traditional PBX system, if only to point out their flaws compared to today's newer technology but not failing to point out their merits as well. A good book for someone who is just beginning to integrate themselves in the field and the tech.
THE CALL CENTER: SELF-SERVICE OR SELF DELUSION?.......2005-07-31
Chances are that you already have this book in your IT library. But, you probably don't have the 5th edition of the book. Author Keith Dawson has done an outstanding job of presenting the complete guide to starting, running and improving your call center.
Dawson begins by showing you his Six-Stage Model of Call Center Development, which is has to do with the way the call center interacts with the rest of the company. Next, the author discusses how you are going to have to find a place or location for your call center. Then, he covers some of the important factors that go into a call center successful design. Dawson next discusses how you have to be very careful in choosing the toll free and long distance services for your call center, because they will be very expensive. Next, the author also covers the automatic call distributor, which routes calls and manages information with respect to those calls. Then, he examines predictive dialing systems, which automate the entire outdialing process, with the computer choosing the person to be called and dialing the number. In addition, Dawson then examines the pros and cons of computer telephone integration. Next, the author looks at interactive voice response, which always captures information in an accurate manner. Then, he researches speech recognition system technology as an autoselector tool for the call center. Dawson continues on by exploring the Web as a tool to automate all of the call center functions without human interaction. Next, the author discusses some of the interesting new tools available, including CRM and the new theories of multichannel access for customer contact. Then, he gives some very serious thought about putting a video in your call center. Dawson then discusses that the best way to route a call to the agent most capable of handling that specific call, is routing based on an agent's skill or combination of skills, like language, training, experience, or any mix of those and other factors. Then, the author explains the importance of customer relationship management (CRM). Next, he shows you why order processing systems give you power over your inventory and pricing. Dawson next reminds you why display boards and readerboards are a stable versatile technology, and an inexpensive way to quickly improve call center performance. The author also explains why headsets are a key ingredient in every call center. Next, he discusses the on-hold messaging queue. Dawson also explains the importance of workforce management software, and how it is the art and science of having the right number of agents at the right times, in their seats, to answer an accurately forecasted volume of incoming calls at the service level you desire. Then, the author continues on by explaining why monitoring is a critical part of the process of teaching anew rep how to deal with customers, how to handle difficult situations, even simply how to follow a script and read a screen full of complex information. Finally, he goes into how to make call center careers meaningful.
With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of making you, the reader, understand the value of surefire ways to motivate your reps; realize the value on the front line; outsourcing; disaster and contingency planning; and, telecommuting agents. At the end of the day, you'll know whether the call center is self-service or self-delusion.

A good general guide.......2000-11-28
This is a good book to people who want to have an overview at a glance about call centers features and problems. But, according to new economy habits, it is not a technological issue. So, if many points are discussed, such as human resources, real estate, organisation, hardware and products, none of them is focused in a detailed way. It is surely a very good introduction to people starting a new job in call centers environments, but do not expect too much by readin it.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good to Me.......2004-12-13
First off - Goldmine will help you automate your business processes, so it's an all purpose tool. This book does a lot to show you how to make parts of the tool work. Becuase GM is so capable, it has a steep learning curve. Once you get to a certain point, your can do your business, manage your prospects, standardize communications, do reporting, etc. GM is flexible enough to adapt to almost any small businesses processes, so guess what, setting it up in the first place is a bear. Learning to set it up is harder. This book will help if you already have some knowledge of databases. It is not a Developer's guide, but it does go beyond the manuals that come with the system. I was hoping when I bought it to be able to set up GM from the information. I could have, but to save time we hired a developer to get ours set up, and periodically need maintenance. It's a good introductory reference, but not a course.
what a waste.......2002-10-15
This is a great book if your boss asks what book they should buy to learn Goldmine. Its not helpful, poorley written and should make you look like a superstar as long as you already know the program.
Goldmine - not for single users.......2002-03-04
If you have an inclination to buy this book, look at ACT! or MS Outlook instead of Goldmine. These books are written by Goldmine Certified Consultants. Do you really believe they are going to give their secrets away...when they charge thousands a day?
You will find the only real solution to any problem beyond the GoldMine Unknowledgeable Base (which I believe they purposely do not update) or their Customer Disservice Department is as basic as it gets. FrontRange (owner of Goldmine) constantly refers you to Goldmine Certified Consultants. It is obvious that FrontRange is leaving individuals and small business owners "Out On The Range!"
No real information on how to use GoldMine.......2001-10-17
This book suffers from the same problems as the GoldMine for Dummys book. If you have been using GoldMine and have a good understanding of its purpose and function then the book contains interesting information. If you are not knowledgeable about GoldMine and your boss drops it on your desk and tells you to learn it then this book has minimal value. The book lacks an integrated approach.
The information is good and accurate but is basically scattered pieces of knowledge. Think of it like this, suppose that someone wanted to teach you chess. They described each and every piece and the board. They described the manner in which each piece could move and restrictions on movement. Then they said to go play chess. You would surely lose if you don't know that the goal is to capture the other king nor how all the pieces work together to create an effective defense or offense. This book describes how each piece works but not how to get them to work together.
Unfortunately I can't point anyone to any other book on GoldMine that does not suffer the same problem. They describe all the ingredients and how to prepare the ingredients but not how to bake the cake.
Change and organize your life now........2000-09-23
I recently purchased this book and it has seriously changed the way I manage everything! I got it before a long tedious airplane trip, and for my lousy $18 investmest, I got the motivation to make anything I want to occur happen. My office and house is already starting to make my life easier, and my stress level has been reduced to zip. I really recommend this book to people that hate being disorganized, stressed out, and get angry easily. Overall, this is a wonderful book, and tough long jobs and businesses will prosper.
