Lives up to its name and then some........2002-07-20
Every topic is well chosen (not only everything a language learner needs to stay out of trouble, but also everything that helps the language learner thrive),
clearly explained with effective examples,
cross-referenced as needed,
clearly arranged,
easy to find,
easy to understand,
easy to remember
and easy to put to immediate use.
The book is cheap.
The book almost the dimensions of a paperback Louis L'Amour novel.
What more can we ask for in a pocket reference grammar?
Carry this little gem with
your favorite compact dictionary,
the Spanish-language paperback that you're enjoying
and Alfredo González Hermoso's "Spanish Verb Manual" (ISBN 0844213462, almost the same dimensions as this book, yet a big improvement on "501 Spanish Verbs").

Systematic but brief.......2006-10-11
I used this book after I had learned some Spanish from tapes. I was going to a Spanish speaking country, and I needed to see what the words actually looked like, as well as to get an idea of how the language is structured. Here's the thing you need to know: although it says "Teach Yourself Spanish *Grammar*", this book is extremely useful as a practical guide to speaking the language. It's organised according to functions (for example: expressing wants, likes, giving opinions, describing the past). This makes it about a thousand times more useful than an ordinary phrasebook. A phrasebook only teaches you how to ask for, say, fruits at a market. If you're lucky, it'll teach you how to ask for vegetables too. With this book, you can just look up "expressing wants" and learn querer and preferir, and how you can use them with a noun, a verb, or a pronoun.
It's really a more "building blocks" approach to language, but it still provides sample sentences for each idea, so you can see how it's done. This book won't have you speaking fluent, advanced idiomatic Spanish (nor is it a good reference grammar for advanced learners), but it will definitely prepare you to say a wide range of things in basic Spanish.
By the way, I've lent it to two other friends who have also used it to get a basic knowledge of Spanish for reading or travel. One of them refused to give it back to me until he'd finished it!
Clear, concise, GREAT tool!.......2005-10-14
For any student, I would recommend this book. When I teach my classes, I often reference it for a second or third way to present the material, and have recommended it to any student wishing to review.
It starts off with conversational help, and then the chapters delve into more grammatical lessons, always chock full of examples to help the information make sense.
It would be an excellent textbook if there were exercises, but it's not intended for that purpose. I would say the ages are mature high school students and up.
For younger children, try Flip Flop Spanish!
Easy to Understand, Concise.......2003-04-22
This is a fabulous tool for anyone studying the Spanish Language! It is explains Spanish grammer in a simple concise form which is much easier to understand that many textbooks! Everyone studying Spanish should pick up this bargain of a supplemental tool!!

Best quick grammar for Spanish I have found.......2004-10-13
Organized by topics. Each topic goes for one or two pages and includes practice exercises. At end of book are more practice exercises. The book serves both as a quick reference for Spanish grammar as well as a learning guide. I highly recommend it.

OK for the Spanish teacher, not for the independent student........1999-01-19
This book is written by a Spaniard and published in England. The pronunciation guides are quite off the mark and some of the usage is not understandable to Americans. I would not recommend it for the independent student. BUT, for the Spanish teacher, the progression of the lessons is good, the explanations given are simple, there are some good ideas for practices, dialogues are provided to emphasize every lesson, there are "practiques" with answers at the end, and the price is right. A teacher of Spanish can use this book with their students, as long as they go through the pronunciation examples and change the ones that are wrong. (example: the book says "a" is pronounced like the "u" in "butter," and "o" is pronounced like the "o" in "model" or "god." ) If you are a teacher looking for some ideas on logical progression of lessons and some good exercises to use in class, this would be a handy tool. I am using it in a class of 10 people, where I have the opportunity to make the necessary corrections. As mentioned above, the price is right.

Customer Reviews:
Good for introductory Spanish students........2005-11-02
I found this book to be extremely helpful when I was learning Spanish on my own. It has 200 model verbs, and an index of hundreds of additional verbs that are referenced to the appropriate model verb. The format is easier to use than the popular "501 Spanish Verbs" book. And it has more usage examples than that book does. I especially recommend this book for self-learners and students in their first two years of high school or college spanish. I continue to use it as a convenient reference on Spanish verb conjugations.

Second Language.......2007-01-29
Even though I am just begining to work through the lessons, this book seems to be very well written. Full of helpful hints for those of us who need all the help we can get.
Spanish review tool.......2006-05-15
While misleading in title, since the processes of absorbing, understanding and remembering all of the information may not be possible in 24 hours, the book is invaluable as a grammar and usage reference. It also may be used as a review guide. The completeness of the scope of information is excellent, even though the volume is lacking. In a language course, the repetition of the drills facilitates the correct learning and, thus, the correct usage of the material. The drills could be more comprehensive and a bit more engaging as to subject matter.
Excellent book for the beginner........2004-11-28
I went through Pimsleur I and II. Then bought several books to learn the grammar. This book explained many things more clearly than other texts.
Did they use an editor?.......2004-10-25
This book looked like a wonderful book, and I loved the pace and the ease of covering each of the subjects, but...
On almost every page I found spelling, grammar and typographical errors. It got to the point that I was using a pencil to correct them myself and needed to keep the sharpener handy.
Also, there is no answer key to any of the exercises, so there is no way to check yourself at the end of the chapter tests.
SO, SO but one of the books you should have........2003-06-02
The book is great starting out and I will apologize now I have not completed the book but am half way finished with 12 lessons done. Like I was saying, the book starts off great, slow, eases into the language. It doesn't assume that you have done the language before and brings you right to the beggining point where you should be. And then whoa, the grammar hits you like a ton of bricks. Grammar after grammar lessons will be taught so be prepared. My personal opinion is that the grammar essons could give up a little to vocabulary and vocab usage could be used a little more. Another thing that has me livid is that the quizes at the end don't have answers. I don't know why but that is not the greatest idea. As well a unit review would be nice to re drill what you've learned into context.
Thanks Christian

Nice book.......2002-07-25
I have really learned a lot from this book. Sad that it doesn't come with a pronunciation tape or CD. However,it will help you learn basic Catalan. It will also give you and idea of the countries that speak Catalan and the culture of this language.
IF ...........2001-12-22
It is a great book if you want to learn some Catalan, specially if you plan on going to Barcelona or Catalunya or know people that speak the language. It'll give you the basics for traveling and/or pulling a smile from your catalan friend....
There are better ways to learn Catalan.......2001-02-27
As anyone who has tried to learn Catalan knows, this is the most available book. However, it is often difficult and pedantic. I found that the University of Girona website was far more useful. As mentioned by other reviewers, trying to learn Catalan without language tapes, is nearly impossible. I am currently taking Intensive Catalan courses, and learned more in a week than I learned practicing with the book. If one is able to aquire a dictionary, and a copy of Xuriguera's "Els verbs Catalans Conjugats", you will move faster. The University of Girona, has the best formed intensive language class I have found. Check out their website and try to get a copy of their book. Adeus
Catalan Made simple.......2000-07-07
After my return from eastern Spain, I took up the study of learning Catalan, which was the language many of my ancestors spoke before they settled in the New World. While at a bookstore in Madrid, I encountered this book on a shelf and found it fascinating to read and study. while the language is primarily spoken in 4 countries (Catalonia, Spain; Southeastern France; Sardinia, Italy; and Andorra (its' official language) it still holds plenty of power in Europe, being one of the top ten most spoken in the European Union (although not official.
The author took his time in researching the language and he clearly states the dialect taught in the book differs from other Catalan dialects such as Valenciano or Mallorquin. This is very important, especially if traveling and/or doing business in this region of Europe, where dialects are plenty. I read the book, and after a while, I surprised my pen pal near Barcelona with a letter in Catalan. He was blown away that I wrote the language so well on my first try.
This book will help you learn grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure, however as the other reviewer of this book said, the only thing negative is that there is no audio tapes to accompany this book. Many language books in the Teach Yourself! series have audio tapes, however it is very difficult to speak Catalan without listening to a native speaker. I had to go on the web to hear some examples, and even this is difficult, because only a few phrases are said.
I contaced the publisher by mail, and I got the same response. There is not an audio companion to the book. I am so disappointed about this, however this shouldn't be a reason not to buy this book. Mr. Yates, who has written other books on the series has done an excellent job covering this once-forbidden language (Franco prohibited its' use in public during his regime).
If you are interested in learning this language, I recommend the following books:
(1) Cambridge Word Selector : English - Catalan
(2) Catalan sin Enfuerzo (for Spanish speakers who want to learn Catalan)
(3) Catalan Dictionary :English-Catalan/Catalan-English (by Routledge Press)
Let's hope in the future that NTC Publishing will change its' mind and release an audio tape companion to this book, but for now, the best way to learn phonetically is to find a private tutor.
Catalan, A Complete Course for Beginners by Alan Yates.......2000-02-16
I bought this book over a year ago and found it immediately useful for my limited purpose. I was learning a song cycle in Catalan and the pronunication guide at the beginning of Alan Yates's volume served me well, mainly because he uses International Phonetic Alphabet. Having studied IPA and other Romance languages, I was able to make a good phonetic transcription and then sing successfully in a langage I'd never heard spoken. If you know French and Spanish, you can read Catalan for comprehension, especially if you have a dictionary handy, which I did. When I got ready to move on to actually learning something about the spoken language I hit a snag. There are no audiotapes to accompany this book, and Catalan is not a language you can learn to pronounce well without an audio model. Transcribing every word in Yates's examples into IPA would take forever. So I called up the publisher, NTC, near Chicago. I was told that no tapes are available and there are no plans to publish any. Apart from this significant limitation, Yates's Catalan tutor is well organized and written. He admits to having used Kathleen Speight's Teach Yourself Italian as his model. I learned Italian from her book many years ago, and it's a gem; but Italian is much easier to learn to pronounce than Catalan. Bottom line: if you have a native speaker who can coach you on pronunciation, this would be a great book to use for your Catlan language study.

An essential resource for language learners at all levels
For beginning learners or students who have a hard time grasping a new language, the Teach Yourself Vocabulary series has been totally revised to be a self-teaching resource for teens and adults. These practical guides present hundreds of key words in manageable groups--not boggling-boggling vocabulary lists like other language learning books do--in familiar topics such as telling time, greetings, employment and hobbies. This series also features numerous memorizing techniques to ensure that new vocabulary sticks in the learner's mind.
More than just reference books, the Teach Yourself Vocabulary series builds students' knowledge of the language and contains:
- Key, up-to-the minute vocabulary
- Terms listed with relevant verbs, adjectives, and useful expressions
- Memorizing activities to make sure readers remember the words they have learned
Customer Reviews:
Great for Improving Vocabulary.......2005-09-21
I'm 24 now and have been taking Spanish in school since I was 12. I am pretty fluent when it comes to conversational spanish and I can read online newspapers without too much effort. I learned all the grammar in school, so the only thing I really need to do now is just expand my vocabulary.
This book is laid out very well. Every chapter has a category, which has subcategories containing word lists. The groupings are very helpful and save you lots of time from having to look everything up yourself.
I still don't know all of the words in here, but it has pretty much all the basic words you could ever need. This book has been invaluable for teaching me and refreshing my memory on household things like sheets, pots and pans, and foods I don't even eat. It even has words for different types of illegal drugs! Now that is thorough!
The only thing I don't like about the book, if anything, is that once in a while I don't even understand the English translation. I speak American English and the book seems to be written by a British author and the words sometimes seem archaic. For example, I just looked and saw "pintarse las unas" which means "to paint one's nails", but the book has it translated as "to varnish one's nails". This I understood, but sometimes I just pass over a word.
All in all a very good book, especially for the price.
Excellent teaching and reference choice!!!!!!.......2001-03-09
What a great book. However, what is left out is this dialect of Spanish is called Castillian. This is spanish as spoken in Spain. While in Puerto Rico I repeated some of the words I learned from reading the book and the people I was talking with had a look of "What is he saying" on their faces. But, this is an excellent book for learning spanish. There are 4-5 different methods for learning Spansih outlined in this book and there is something here for everyone. I am fortunate to have a spanish speaking person working with me and I always ask questions. You will not be disappointed if you purchase this book.
Comprehensive and easy to use. Highly recommended........1999-06-29
I am learning Spanish for both business and pleasure and find this book an invaluable tool which has greatly increased my range of Spanish vocabulary. It is practical, up-to-date and well laid out. An excellent reference book which I would recommend to anyone wishing to enrich their grasp of the Spanish language.
