Book Description
In addition to vocabulary that permits effective communication about everyday topics, students will find this guide provides, in extensive footnotes, the most common ways of saying things. It also tells readers the appropriate word to choose in different Spanish-speaking countries! This book emphasizes fine distinctions between synonyms, too. Excellent Resource Material .......2006-11-13
The content and structure of the each lesson presented in this book are superb. Answers to all exercises are also presented at the back of the book and this is excellent for students and independent learners who desire to test their understanding of the the materials presented upon completion of the excercises. This book is just great both learning and revision whether you are in school or just an independent learner.
It not just a list of words, the book provides the context within which the words are used, present them in a way that enhances memorization and correct usage of the various words, provides information on word usage to convey similiar ideas in different parts of the spanish speaking world (constant reminder that there are some differences in in common words usage in some Latin American countries and Spain. The listing of the vocabulary is given at the ends of each excercise.
This book is just excellent and a must have for spanish students!!!
Excelente- me parece muy bueno para los estudiantes.......2003-03-03
This is a wonderful workbook for Intermediate level Spanish students who wish to instantly build their vocabulary. The learning approach is thematic, meaning each chapter focuses on vocabulary pertinent to a theme such as: At the airport (En el aeropuerto), On the airplane (En el avión) or At the train station (En la estación de ferrocarril) to name a few. The book provides ample practice exercises, with an answer key at the back of the book and what I found really valuable was each chapter has a mini paragraph about the theme in question that incorporates the vocabulary taught in the lesson. The workbook will definitely help the student to expand his/ her vocabulary because the chapters encompass everyday themes thus detailing everyday vocabulary. I feel it's more for an Intermediate level student because one would have to have a solid base to benefit from the new material presented in the chapters without feeling frustrated and also have beyond beginner reading and comprehension skills. This is a good supplementary study aid to classroom lessons or independent study.
Indispensible resource for studying Spanish.......2001-09-27
I had 4 years of high school Spanish back in the 1970's, and I recently made the decision to brush up on what I have learned in an effort to further my studies, with the goal of becomming fluent.
I have examined a number of resources in order to determine the most efficient and logical way to build a vocabulary. None of these has come close to Shaum's Outline of Spanish Vocabulary.
The book is divided into chapters that provide vocabulary for everyday usage, as well as in what appropriate context to use each word.
If you are serious about learning Spanish, and are highly self-motivated, this book will put you well on your way to mastering this lovely language. Thanks to this book, and Schaums Outline of Spanish Grammar, I fully expect to be at an intemediate level in Spanish within six months.
A must have whether you are studying independently, or as part of a class.

Phenomenal.......2007-04-11
I started learning Italian with Pimsleur and I nearly gave it up until I ran across this grammar. I mean, don't get me wrong, Pimsleur is really great, but... Italian is not the first foreign language I've learnt, and I'm used to (or maybe prefer) studying in a rather structured way, learning the grammar of the language while building conversational, reading and writing skills. So Pimsleur, which is based almost exclusively on listening and repetition, didn't work ideally for me...This book, however, was just the right thing that helped me move on and made the whole experience of learning with Pimsleur enjoyable. It is very user-friendly, highly suitable for beginners, and presented in a very clear way, making it very easy to find everything quickly. So whenever while listening to my Pimsleur CDs a "why" question arises in my mind, I open this book and find the answer quickly - really quickly.
Basically, I would recommend it to any beginner who started to learn Italian with one method or the other. Like I said, very clear, quite comprehensive and at the same time beginner-friendly. Even if you started learning Italian this week, this grammar is for you, because everything is laid-out in plain English. I believe it will also provide me with a convenient way to bridge the gap after I finish with Pimsleur to move on to more advanced speaking, reading and writing.
Two corrections by the author, Joseph E. Germano.......2007-03-03
Re: SCHAUM'S OUTLINE OF ITALIAN GRAMMAR, THIRD EDITION, 2007.
While checking the accuracy of the book whose copies I have just received from McGraw-Hill, I have noticed three mistakes. The corrections are as follows:
1. The correct number of pages is 353 (not 330)!
2. On the front cover it is stated that there are 389 exercises with answers; NO: the exact number is 480 EXERCISES WITH ANSWERS.
Also, for the reader's benefit, I would like to mention that this THIRD EDITION has NEW FEATURES:
A) A new chapter on Comparatives and Superlatives, CHAPTER 4;
B) For the first time, in any of Schaum's Foreign Language Outlines, this Italian Grammar - Third Edition - offers end-of-book GLOSSARIES that comprise around 2,200 entries: ITALIAN-ENGLISH and ENGLISH ITALIAN, PP. 327-345;
C) A THOROUGHLY REVISED SUBJECT INDEX, PP. 347-353;
D) All CHAPTERS HAVE BEEN UPDATED;
E) A TOTAL OF 70 BRAND NEW PAGES HAVE BEEN ADDED;
F) Because of the recent switch from LIRA to EURO of the Italian Monetary System, the PREFACE has a long PARAGRAPH ON THE EURO detailing its use in GRAMMAR, AND THE WRITTEN FORM OF EVERY COIN and BANK NOTE.
G) On every page of the ANSWERS section appears the number of the CHAPTER
for easy reference.
-THANK YOU.
Italian grammar.......2005-12-30
If you want to learn Italian or want to improve your knowledge of Italian grammar you should get this outline. It covers the whole Italian grammar and also includes drills which will help you to improve. However since it does not cover vocabulary I would recommend you the Langenscheidt Standard English-Italian dictionary and a vocabulary outline such as the Schaum's Outline of Italian vocabulary. 501 Italian verbs could also be of good use for you.
GREAT!!.......2002-04-06
I have purchased MANY help books in my quest to learn Italian. But this one has caught me by surprise. It is the first one that seems to be actually helping me, especially remembering the rules.
Best Single Reference.......2001-03-25
Of all the reference books and grammars out there, this is the single best: comprehensive, clear, nonacademic (in the best sense) and very intelligently laid out. Don't miss it.

Schaum's Outlines Italian Vocabulary.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent book for both the beginner and more advanced student. I would highly recommend it to any student of Italian.
Very good!.......2007-02-15
You will enjoy this book -as if you were a children- watching pictures, completing sentences and reading some very short "tales": being at the airport, revising your car, ordering meals at the restaurante...
Just try it!
Thorough but incomplete.......2007-02-02
A man finds himself in a provincial town in Italy where nobody speaks English. Luckily for him, he has a working knowledge of Italian grammar and has recently used Schaum's Outline to brush up his vocabulary. This man can book a room at a hotel, read the menu at a restaurant, ask for directions, rent a car, and perform a few less common tasks like playing volleyball, airing out his political opinions, having his clothes dry-cleaned, and calling the receptionist at 1 a.m. to notify her the faucet's leaking.
Now suppose he wants to go to a museum or to see a church or to hear a concert or to pay a visit to the bookshop. After all, he is in Italy, one of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world. Asking for directions is easy enough; there's a whole chapter devoted to this topic. "Wait a minute!," he stops in mid-question, having just accosted a stranger in the street, "How do you say 'church'? How do you say 'concert hall'? How do you say 'bookshop'?" Even if he's memorized the entire glossary at the end of Schaum's, he may not be acquainted with these words (though he will know the word for "bookmark"). Dismayed, the man returns to the hotel, where he sits at the bar and orders a drink.
Now suppose a gorgeous Italian takes a seat next to him and seems ready to spark up a conversation. The man will naturally want to tell this Italian all about where he was born and grew up, what his hobbies are, what he likes and dislikes, what he feels, what he wishes for himself, and whether he believes in God. He might also wish to add that he's single or recently divorced. Schaum's Outline won't help our poor man: he has been trained to address service providers, not plain old people.
I realize there's a limit to how much one book can teach you. But surely this book could've made room for a chapter on culture and a chapter on informal communication (not to mention a chapter on colors and one on animals which don't wind up in your plate), even if it meant doing away with some utterly repetitive exercises. No one in Italy expects you to quote Dante or to go into minute details about your stamp collection. However, if you still think Michelangelo was a Ninja Turtle, and if all you want to know is how to make reservations or how to dine where the locals dine, you needn't go abroad for that.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful book..........2007-08-26
I studied French for many years. I can tell you much of the vocabulary in this book is very, very useful. I would fancy that an American student of French would benefit from this than a Canadian one, since they would be less likely to cover these terms in French courses on the high school in the U.S., and they wouldn't cover these everyday words in Canadian French university courses or American ones. You are dealing with terms related to cars, sports, travelling, hotel reservations etc.. I think that is useful, and you can't feel fluent without knowing these terms. I have a very old version of this book (1985), and I eventually want to get this newer one and compare.
Schaum's Outlines of French Vocabulary.......2007-03-17
I have given this product a hundred per cent rating because:
1)it is easy to understand and
2)it is comprehensive; it contains some topics, such as "L'enseignment" and "Au travail" that are rarely found in other books of its category.
I recommend this product to anyone who wants to learn French fast and easily.
Perfect for the intermediate learner.......2000-04-14
The first time I saw the book in a book shop, I didn't buy it because it looked like it was meant to be used by students cramming for exams. Maybe this is indeed the purpose of the book. I am an adult learner trying to learn French on my own. Since I don't have to pass any exams, I didn't think the book would be of any use to me. The second time I saw the book, I bought it anyway because it wasn't so expensive and I thought maybe I would pick up some useful vocabulary anyway. The book is surprisingly good. In fact, this is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Its 46 chapters and the appendixes cover the words and phrases needed in a wide variety of situations. Maybe advanced students may find the book easy, but the level of difficulty is just about right for an intermediate learner like me.
I think it's good.......2000-01-23
I borrowed this book from a library but I think I need to spend a bit more time on it so I have decided to purchase my own copy. Basically it's different from the other vocab. books which it has exercises for you to do for each unit, and the materials are not very condensed, as with other vocab. books where they just categorize and throw a bunch of vocabs at you. Learning vocab needs drill and exercises, not pure memorization and I think this book does well in this area. I think if you really follow the book and work on all the exercises you will learn a lot. The only thing which made me take a star out of my rating is that the pictures and perhaps the layout of the book is a bit boring...ZZzzzz and outdated but actually the book wasn't very old at all.
I am also going to try out the grammar book and I hope that works well for me.
Fantastic, an art to itself.......1999-09-15
The book is a very good collection of French Words and is properly indexed with word lists. A must for any student learning french at any level.

Excellent resource for those needing to know 'right now'........2006-04-20
If time is a premium (and when isn't it for a student?) this is the book to get. Clear, concise, and to the point. It is student friendly, and definitely gives you what you need to know to pass the course. 'Two thumbs way up!'
There is no "collectible" edition.......2002-04-23
I see someone is offering a "collectible" edition of this book for over $13 (as of April 2002); it is also advertised as being the "UK" edition. This is a book of American grammar--there *is* no UK edition. There isn't any special "collectible" version either--it doesn't come in hardcover, it doesn't come signed by the authors, it doesn't come with an audio tape, it doesn't come with a workbook, it doesn't come with pop-up pictures of the sentence parts. As one of the authors, I know! So if you want a copy, get one of the "normal" ones at the normal price.

P.S. I would have submitted this review w/out stars, but that wasn't an option. So of course I picked 5!

Customer Reviews:
an excellent companion book for any Japanese learner.......2007-10-14
This book covers just about every important bit of the Japanese Grammar in a comprehensible manner.
Each part is given a short intro, explained shorly and clearly and then is given numerous example in all romaji, Japanese (Kana + Kanji) and its english translation in which the grammar part is bolded out to stress its influence on the sentence.
Then there are explanation and examples of common speech patterns in which the grammar part is used (and then followed by yet another numerous examples). There are also many exercises at the end of each section with answers at the end of the book.
The last part is probably the most important part. It covers many of the common patterns and addressing such as comparison, asking for premission, giving advice, ect.
I used this book through my studies from being an absolute beginner. Even now it serves as a great reference and review book since it organized in a way that you can easily find any speech patten you seek and view varius examples that will remind you what you had forgot.
Great Basic Grammar Guide.......2007-02-25
Technically, this is a cram guide for College students studying japanese for courses. But it makes an ideal companion for people living in Japan who are learning a lot of words through osmosis, but need a little help with the grammar to help them structure what they know and take their Japanese to a basic level.
I used this book to help me with my grammar within 6 months of arriving in Japan, and it helped me make the leap from being able to make single to triple word declarations in Japanese, to being able to speak in full sentences, and helped put me on the road to fluency. It shows you how to form basic sentences (for example comparisons "X is bigger than Y" etc) in a simple, straightforward manner. Since it's an outline of the most fundamental grammar, all of it is highly relevant and useful, with no filler.
One thing though- As useful as it is for beginners, since it only covers fundamental elementary grammar, good students will quickly outgrow it. Once finished with it I would recommend "A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar" by Seiichi Nakino and Michio Tsutsui, also available here on amazon.
By the way- the reviewer below is right about "Wo" not being a mistranslation. It's a standard, if confusing way to spell it. You need to
type "wo" to get that particle if you're typing in Japanese on a web browser or microsoft word, for example.
..........2005-01-29
I haven't read this book, but one reviewer said that they incorrectly used "wo" for the particle commonly represented as "o"-- this is false; "wo" is the name of the particle; the w sound is merely softer than that in "wa".
Good for review if you have been cursed with JSL.......2003-09-10
For those of you with the extreme misfortune of having to use Eleanor Jorden's abysmal text (Jorden's Solipsistic Language), this book may save your grade. It contains all of the grammar covered in first year Japanese. Furthermore, all examples are given in hiragana/katakana/kanji, with a romanji and an English translation. In other words, although this is a grammar survey, it also provides you with the reading practice that you'll need in order to achieve any degree of fluidity in Japanese. Cover up the English and the romanji lines and see how much you can read. You won't get all of the kanji, but even reading everything around the kanji will help you, and the more you see kanji, the less strange they seem. You will pick some up just from the frequency with which they appear. As for the grammar explanations: they are both concise and self-sufficient, just what a beginner needs. Finally, the book provides answers to all exercises, an often neglected feature of texts written by egomaniacs such as Eleanor Jorden. Buy this book if you want a clear and straightforward Japanese grammar book that offers exercises and solutions, in addition to reading practice and an easy to use index and table of contents.
good value for money.......2002-08-27
I bought this book a few months ago as it seemed to explain most of the essential points of Japanese grammar as well as provide exercises to test your understanding. At my local foreign language book shop, there was a plethora of Japanese language books to choose from but some only skimmed the surface where as others were great slab-like enclyclopaedias which should have come with a warning "contents under extreme pressure".
The book is divided into fifteen chapters and covers subjects such as adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, particles, conjunctions, verbs, conditional clauses, interrogative words, nominalization, honorific expresssions etc etc. The last chapter is particularly good because it illustrates several commonly used japanese expressions. There are nicely varied examples (written in english, romaji and kanji/kana) in every chapter with corresponding exercises and answers(great!).
Sure there were a few typos and dubious answers but i'm sure they will be edited when the next edition comes out. To tell you the truth, they didn't bother me much at all.
I would have given this book another half star if particles were explained in greater depth but that probably would have doubled the book's thickness.
Overall, a good buy

Not exactly what I expected but still really good........2001-11-23
As with other Schaum's outlines, this one has lots of exercises for students to practice with. I was confused because I thought this book and Schaum's "theory and probs of english grammar" were different. In fact, they are the same (basically), but this one is simply an earlier edition... Perhaps the earliest??
