Roof Framing by Marshall Gross.......2006-09-23
I probably have 6 books on the steel square from as far back as 1904. They are wonderful examples of just how ingenious workman were at that time. They relied on the steel square for all of their framing problems. Mr. Gross adds his modern day interpretation using the calculator and the result is a very good treatise on framing from an expert. Each new chapter builds on the last and he encourages the reader to build models as your skills progress. Recommended!
A Must Have Book for Your Construction Library...........2006-06-26
I rated this book at 5. It clearly explains the mathematical operations needed to configure various roof types. The Texas Instruments Calculator TI-35 used by the author to walk you through the steps,I acquired via Ebay for $7.50.The TI-35 is no longer manufactured. But Office Depot carries the new Texas Instruments BA-II which also has the necessary function keys for about $32.
Tough to get through.......2006-01-18
I'm 125+ pages into the this book ... I agree Mr. Gross certainly knows his stuff, however this is one of the most difficult books I've ever read on ANY subject. On the plus side there are nice illustrations. Generally speaking the material roughly builds progressively.
On the negative side? I've spent hours on a single page. The problem? The book was not properly edited. Period. There are many places where terms are used but not defined. Other places terms are defined but not ILLUSTRATED. Many of the illustrations don't point out important concepts. Some references in chapter 3 says skim over chapter 4, hardly the thing I like doing (reading out of sequence). There is hardly ANY repetition in the book and to me, repetition is a reader's best friend. Readers need to be re-assured and reminded. It's not a bad thing.
I'm extremely type A, so when things aren't defined when used or are out of sequence, it causes me a problem. Yes, eventualy when you read, and re-read, and re-read and press onward, eventually yes, you get to 'see' what the author intended. I just think it shouldn't have been that tortuous.
I too found that the text on backing angle is apparently not correct. I think this book could be great if only it was formatted better and edited. I'm hoping to eventually plow through the entire book but honestly it's a ton of work. I've read through other construction books in a fraction of the time.
Part Deux...
I'm finally through the book, all 400+ pages. My initial assessment of this book still stands. The author is clearly a master roof cutter. He knows roof cutting inside and out. Some information presented is almost an epiphany. However the book suffers greatly because it did receive a comprehensive edit (and that's not the author's fault). I had great difficulty reading this book and not because the material was that complex, but because the book wasn't edited FOR THE READER. I can look beyond (no pun intended) the 4 POINT fonts used in some illustrations, the out of sequence (with text) drawings, the numerous, numerous times that the keystroke sequences were shown for calculating the tangent and secant of angles. The thing that slowed me down was the assertions made in the text that didn't have a well developed drawings, clear `proof', or much (if any) in the way of explanation. If you don't really care about knowing WHY something is the way it is, then you'll probably get through the book fairly quickly. If you really want to know why something is the way it is, then you'll probably spend lots and lots of time figuring things out. And what makes that so frustrating is that a brief explanation could have saved me (the reader) a ton of time. Reading this book was a ton of work and for a good part, needlessly so.
all math.......2005-12-20
I hoped that this book would help with design of the roof of an addition I am building. It does not. I need ideas, rules and details for typical roof designs, this book is nearly all math. Since I am designing on CAD, I don't need to do or understand the math.
The Best!.......2005-08-16
this book makes understanding the geometry of roofing so simple. i would highly recommend this book for any DIY type project. build roof systems as esy or as complicated as u want. all u need is this book a measure tape and a calculator.

Book Description
AT LAST! Design, construction and UBC requirements combined in one building system. Tired of books that treat wood design and construction methods as separate theoretical subjects, failing to weave them together like they are in the real world? Design and Construction of Wood Framed Buildings, by Morton Newman, not only bridges this gap, it also cites UBC requirements and constraints every step of the way. Each phase of design and construction is illustrated by one of 350 AutoCAD-generated details or explained with an example calculation. Detail drawings also interpret the intent of the Uniform Building Code. And you'll find all the information organized in the same progression in which you work - general requirements, building design loads, design examples and assembly techniques.

This book is a must for anyone involved in light frame construction.......2005-09-26
This is a great book. I highly recommend it to anyone involved with light frame construction. It is clear, concise, the examples are very easy to follow. You do not need to be an engineer to use this book. This is a great book for engineers, architects and contractors alike.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent .......2007-05-21
Very detailed with corresponding illustrations. My favorite construction book out of 10. Covers all variations of complex rafter roofs. Also check out Roof Framer's bible for tables and corresponding math if u hate those construction calculators.
For advanced roof cutters.......2007-01-01
This book really helped me work through some issues I was having with cutting
a complex roof. I don't know if I could have done it otherwise. Beginning framers would also benefit from the book as it offers some advice in that area as well. Be sure you get the Journal of Light Construction edition NOT the edition published by Craftsman Book Company. I don't think there is a better book for advanced roof cutters.
Look no further!.......2006-02-27
This is the best book currently available on roof cutting. It is enhanced through the authors extensive experience and inspirational passion for his craft. It is written for those who already have an understanding of framing and would like to grow in their knowledge. The layout makes it an easy to use quick reference guide for the particular aspects one might wish to inform themselves about on any given day.
I was impressed and encouraged by Will Holladay after purchasing his book. He showed me the joy, the satisfaction, and the excellence that can be achieved by doing what one was created to do.
Only book you need.......2005-06-05
I have been in construction for about 5 years, and almost all of the roofs I have worked on are truss roofs. I am interested in getting into roof cutting/stacking, so I have been buying a few books. But this is the only book you need. Everything is explained very well, with a lot of pictures. And he gives a lot of techniques that can be used. The author himself used to be a production roof cutter, one of the best in the business. Out of all the roof framing books, the only other one I have bought that I plan on keeping is the roof framer's bible. It is a very handy little book to have.
This Book is a Must Have for RoofCutters.......2004-11-28
This is a must have book for roof framing. The drawings and principles are layed out very well and as cleanly as you can for a book like this. It covers just about every roof framing situation you will likely encounter, and the principles and techniques will help you solve the ones that aren't covered.
If you are serious about learning to cut and stack roofs, then buy this book. Or if you are like me, buy a few and give them to your framers.

Customer Reviews:
no basics.......2003-08-28
Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!
Good reference for stick roofs.......2003-04-23
In recent years, the roof has become the focal point of many NA homes. No longer content with simple styles, rangy, monstrous roofs are the norm. Additionally many of them are likely to be built with either trusses, or maybe manufactured wood sticks. These techniques shave dollars right into the developers pockets. And frankly have become the norm in the last 5 to 10 years. They aren't much covered in this book.
The reality is that these new story and a half high, architect/engineer designed truss roofs, factory manufactured, and crew/crane installed are a little much for the average homeowner.
On the other hand, if you want to cut your own roof, this comparatively recent book gives you all the info you will need to build 2x roofs in many styles. It's a good basic reference, that covers a lot of procedural detail. I find it very useful. If you are only looking for a roof's worth of studs, you will have no difficulty finding the materials for a stick built roof, of generally higher quality than the truss roofs so popular today.
where's the info.......2003-04-06
The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought). I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs.

Essential Framing Handbook.......2007-04-04
Professional framers will keep this book tucked in their pocket to reference while out on a job.
Best useful framing book I've seen........2007-03-21
I am a residential framer and I use my Roof Framer's Bible almost every day especially when I am framing complicated houses. Circular stairs, conventional rafters, round bays, all the calculations and tips are there for you. I have been framing for about 20 years and it is one of the essential tools I use on the site. I am on my 4th copy as the others have been gradually destroyed by weather (and one was stolen). This is the best useful framing book I've seen. I also liked The Roof Cutter's Secrets to Framing the Custom Home.
Roof Framer's Bible.......2007-02-22
We ordered a few of these reference for the owner and employees. They are finding the book easy to follow and extremely informative.
Roof Framer's Bible.......2006-03-18
Had hoped for information as to how roof framing elements join together in various configurations, but found very little on this on this.

Well-organized as a reference for Residential Steel Framing.......2000-06-01
As a Civil Engineer, having to deal with both horizontal and vertical construction, and having to build residential, industrial and commercial buildings, both in Hurricane zones (Dade County, Miami, Florida) and in earth movement areas (Los Angeles Force 4/Richter Scale 9) in California & now in Istanbul, Turkey, this handbook has been particularly usefull when describing Light Gauge Steel Framing to Engineers which are having to cope with the subject for the first time. Would like to know when a new Edition of this Handbook with updated data will be published?
Our deep appreciation to Mr. Robert Scharff and the editors of Walls & Ceilings Magazine.
Sincerely,
Alexandre Byron-Exarcos President & CEO United States Steel Framing Corp.
