Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL.......2007-10-17

This book has been like a bible for my role as an English Language Literacy Coach in the professional development of teachers. The concepts presented are all research based and up to date and the authors give very specific examples of strategies that can be implemented in classrooms right away. We did a chapter study (Chapter Four on Oral Language Development) as a grade level team, right after receiving the book. We were very impressed with the activities that were suggested and the connections we made with things we were already doing. We also loved the companion website that goes with this book that gives resources and activities relating to each chapter. This book is highly recommended for K-12 teachers who have English Language Learners in their classrooms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Organised and No Frills.......2007-03-07

Unlike some books on English language teaching, "Approaches and Methods" by Richards and Rodgers is a logically organised, relatively jargon-free and easily grasped book. It is almost certain you will not be diving for the headache tablets after this book.

Covering a large range of the historical and current second language teaching methodologies, the book discusses methods in a logical format that is the same throughout. They discuss three broad areas: Approach, (the theories and ideas underpinning the method), Design, (roles, materials and so on), and Procedure, (what happens in the classroom). This makes each chapter exceptionally well-organised.

The book covers a lot of different methods, including those that are less in favour these days, as well as some that are more recent. However, some very recent developments are not included, such as the controversial Dogme of Thornbury and Medding. What *is* in the book includes Suggestopaedia, TPR, NLP, Natural Way, Multiple Intelligences and more. All of them come with a brief discussion on the background that they came from.

This is an incredibly valuable book for a run down on the methodologies that have come and gone, (some still on the way out). It is an excellent resource that serves well as a reference, or something to be read from cover-to-cover. Or both.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of Teaching Methods.......2007-03-07

This book provides a great overview of all of the major, and some of the minor, approaches to language teaching. This book is laid out into three major sections. In the first section the authors deal with major trends in twentieth century language teaching. This gives an excellent historical look at where language teaching has come from and the thought process that accompanied such trends. The second sections deals with alternative approaches and methods. These include TPR, suggesopedia, whole language, etc. These methods are not commonly used on their own anymore, but used in small ways in overall teaching. The last section is current communicative approach. This is a great chapter on the origin of communicative teaching and how it has changed over the last 20 years.

What is really useful in this book is its layout. Each method is titled in the table of contents for easy access. Then once you are at the appropriate chapter it is subtitled with such useful headings as: approach, method, design, teacher's role, student's role, and types of activities. This really made each method easy to understand and see how it would work in the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book in Great Condition!!.......2007-02-19

this book came really quickly and was in GREAT conditions!!

4 out of 5 stars Required for TESOL class.......2005-08-07

The book easily explains different methods for teaching English Language learners. I recommend the book for TESOL instructors.

5 out of 5 stars Wrong table of contents.......2002-02-22

The table of contents that Amazon has listed here is from the 1986 edition and is very misleading and an injustice to this important and valuable book. The new 2001 edition has 19 chapters and is very expanded and reorganised to include many new communicative approaches. Look at another online bookseller for a proper table of contents.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable resource both in theory and in practice.......2007-10-13

This book is indispensable for the serious language teacher. Firmly based on quantitative research, Nation's book contradicts the dogmas of language teaching found in charlatans such as Krashen. Read his book and learn what really works. Don't go to class without it!

5 out of 5 stars This book gets it done. . . .......2006-11-25

I can't agree more with the previous reviewer. This book is by far the best I've read on the subject--highly informed, highly practical, research-based, and comprehensive. If you're in doubt about whether to buy it, take a moment to look through the table of contents and the excerpts! After reading this book at a library, I can't imagine *not* buying a copy for my classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable resource on vocabulary learning.......2004-01-03

This book was recommended to me by an English professor whose area of expertise is EFL vocabulary building. If you're an English teacher looking for a book which explains teaching vocabulary to ESL/EFL students in a crystal-clear manner, this is THE book.

5 out of 5 stars A great theoretical review........2007-02-18

I bought this book to help me review theories of language acquisition. It is well-written and an easier read than the textbook I bought for my TESL methodology course. I recommend this book to anyone reviewing for a TESL comprehensive exam. It is not the book for you if you are looking for practical teaching tips.

1 out of 5 stars if its complex and difficult then why write a book.......2007-02-18

this is the best, i search for learning languages and i get only three books. if learning languages is a difficult task then why am i wasting my time reading reviews. no duh, if i have to learning the basics but where's the magic that 'hoshi' can understand the structure of languages she's never heard of before. ensign hoshi from star trek: enterprise.
i guess she's a genius and learning multiple languages quickly is not for the ordinary person. no way i'm paying $56 bucks for something i already know.

1 out of 5 stars boring and verbose.......2006-11-13

This book makes me wonder what other books are written on this subject that my professor could have chosen. It is a dreary and obfuscating treatise on what should be an interesting subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Great EFL/ESL textbook related to SLA.......2006-02-24

A very good textbook like Brown's other textbook for TESOL students. The book is comprehensive and still easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory text to give students and practitioners a solid working knowledge of theory and research in SLA.......2005-10-14

Mr. "Berlitz pro-teacher['s]" review is a perfect example of why students who want to go into language teaching/education need to have at least a solid working knowledge of theory and research in second language acquisition. As I tell my graduate students, intuition and "experience" are certainly important things but effective teaching can only happen if instructors are able to make sound informed decisions that are based on what we know about how languages are acquired in the first place. As a university professor and researcher of SLA, I believe H. Douglas Brown's text is one of the good places to start to get this knowledge. The book is accessible, easy to read, and does a good job of bringing theory and classroom practice together. I show my students Mr. Berlitz pro-teacher's review at the beginning of my seminars and this review has been very effective in showing graduate students why a working knowledge of SLA theory and research is so important for language teachers. A teacher who has no understanding of how languages are acquired is like a doctor who practices medicine without any idea of how the human body works. My students have also pointed out that Mr. pro-teacher probably did not learn English with the best approach or method when you see all the spelling and grammatical mistakes in his review. See what all those drills and "repeatition" did for him?!!!

Addendum of Oct 28, 2005 - My students noticed that Mr. Pro Teacher has now corrected his spelling of "repeatition."

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2006-11-03

I am an international preschool teacher in Japan whose husband also happens to be Japanese (I am American) and I found this book to be very insightful and relevant to both my professional and personal lives. It is extremely well written, easy-to-follow, and above all interesting. The author explains the acquisition of a second language in very understandable terms. I enjoyed to book imencly.

4 out of 5 stars One Child Two Languages.......2004-02-15

This book is very good for an introduction to second language teaching. It offers practical classroom advise on areas you need to pay attention to.

5 out of 5 stars excellent and rare to find.......2001-07-27

The book arrived two days ago and I only finished a third of it, but I can't help writing this to share how much I liked it. I had searched on the web for information on what a young child (1-5yr), whose home language is not English, will go through when he/she first goes to a English-speaking preschool. I was frustrated for the past two months when my 3-year-old son started preschool. A child at this young age does not have enough social skills to compensate for his lack of competence in a different language, which is again needed to be socially accepted in the new environment. Such a child can become a loner, being ignored by other children, and unable to spell out his feelings. This book is the answer to my several sleepless nights. I am going to copy a few pages which describe the phase my son is going through and give them to my son's teacher so that she will understand what he feels and become more supportive. This is a great book, and I will request my local library to buy it, and I strongly recommend any parents who have the same concerns as I did to read it.

    Book Description

Pictures for Language Learning is richly illustrated and provides a valuable guide to the role of pictures and other visual materials in language teaching. It brings together a wealth of ideas on how to use pictures in a wide range of language learning situations. The first section discusses the contribution visuals can make to all the classroom settings in providing real opportunities for students to communicate, whether they are working as a class, in groups or in pairs. Sections B and C contain over 200 practical suggestions for picture-generated language work. These make use of visual materials which are readily available to teachers anywhere or illustrations which have been kept simple so that they can be copied easily. The activities can be integrated into all stages of the language teaching process and advice is given on how to adapt the ideas to suit different teaching environments. The final section describes the process of setting up a picture library and offers guidance on where to begin looking for visuals, how to categorise pictures and different methods of storage.

5 out of 5 stars Another great title from Seth Lindstromberg!.......1999-10-31

Seth Lindstromberg has edited several excellent books of ideas for language teaching. This one is filled with brilliant ideas for teaching writing, business English, and other areas, as well as some warm-up activities. One thing I really like about his books is that instead of merely putting together a random collection of activities, he shows you how the ideas can fit into your class, and be a part of one's own development as a teacher. As always, the author has done a great job in selecting some very original and interesting ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent anthology of 110 activities for the EFL classroom........1998-03-29

33 experienced and creative EFL teachers from around the world have contributed to this anthology that contains most valuable teaching ideas for many areas of EFL, e.g. warm-ups, vocabulary, communicative activities, working with a coursebook in a different way, using magazines/newspapers/literature. Most activities are intended for use in classes of intermediate or advanced learners of English, but some (such as the 'warm-ups') are suitable for lower levels as well. In general, the activities involve students in pairwork or group work and challenge them to be 'active' and 'creative'. Each activity is described briefly, but clearly; information about level of students, time required, focus, material needed and, above all, procedure is always given in a concise and helpful way. The activities are grouped under twelve different subject headings; moreover, an index at the end of the book makes it easy for you to find the activity you may need for tomorrow's lesson (or for developing a whole series of activities). This is a book full of ideas that can serve as inspirations to teachers who want to create(or maintain) a lively and 'interactive' EFL or ESL classroom.
