Prentice Hall Reference.......2007-10-04
This item was in good qualities, but it took a while for me to receive it. This book has very interesting information that i am sure will help me in the future. VERY GOOD!
Lots of Wasted Space.......2007-02-27
I bought this book sight unseen as a desk reference and I am sorry that I did. Technically, it is good reference guide - not the best. There are many concepts and terms that are not explained in the body of the text. Rather, as you are reading up on a particular topic and you come across some grammer term, nstead of defining it there, you are forced to flip through the glossary at the end of the text.
Example, page 100: "Forms of the verb that end in -ing, called gerunds..." Well, he author never mentions the fact that gerunds are used as nouns. This you learn from going to the glossary (P. 555)
This sort of thing happens all the time. Ahhhh!!
My second issue has to do with the excessive number of mind-numbing number of practice exercises. They alone take up 30% to 40% of the text. I think it is a great idea to practice what you are trying to learn but guess what? There is no answer key provided.
Why is it that you can get a solutions manual (at leaset odd number)to every math text ever produced but every other discipline restricts them to instructors only. It is so, so annoying. If anyone knows how to get resources reserved for instructors, please let me know.
Bottomline, you are not getting your money's worth with this writer's reference guide. Muriel, I expected better from your textbook.

Great Reference.......2000-04-18
An unbelieveable source of reliance great for research and guidelines on assignments. A teacher at home. Easy to understand and the writer is very dedicated to in helping educate. The MLA format is also shown while description of verbs, tenses and subjects are given in chapters of depth. I strongly recommend this book.

It's a good book and will work well for most students........2007-03-21
It's a good book. The CD in the back of the book was handy for doing drug cards. I preferred Mosby's drug book for Nurses, because it narrowed down the main things the clinical instructor will ask you before you give a drug which is; what's the main thing to watch for in a person taking this drug and what's the action of this drug and why are you giving this drug. So this is a good book and will work for most students but if you have trouble narrowing down the most important information try using the Mosby drug book.

A nuts-and-bolts approach to writing English.......2000-05-12
If the current edition of this book is like the second edition I've used for many years, it is a shop manual for English composition. Each part of a sentence is defined and illustrated. Most important, all types of sentences are diagrammed (at least I hope that feature survives in this edition). And there may be no better way to understand how a verbal construction works or doesn't work than to take it apart and put each piece in its place in a diagram. Diagramming is also a great tool to use in arguing various points of construction. The book also includes general rules and approaches to building complete manuscripts. And the table of contents and index get you quickly to what you want to know. All in all, an excellent preparation for writing and an equally good reference.
A very good guide and practice book for ESL students.......1999-01-31
It has consice explanations and practical exercises. Especially for students who want to produce better written output, this book is the best choice. One thing I prefer is that the running head of each page should have full words (not abbreviations)and chapter number and title. It will make it easier to consult.

The book is a true gem - very comprehensive and well-written. Also the book is replete with examples (both good and bad) of various practices is scientific writing.

This book was recommended to me when I was in graduate school and I was taking a summer course on writing dissertations.
This book is very detailed and has a science focus. It is really a book on technical writing and it applies to anyone who is writing a paper with tables, charts or figures. Many in the social sciences will benefit.
I found it helpful to figure out how to write an abstract. After reading the abstract section, I was amazed at how many working papers I saw did not follow her advice and were the worse for it.
I am sorry to see it currently out of print, but it is worthwhile to track it down either used or at a library. I wished I had gotten sooner so I could have used it for term and research papers before I was working on my dissertation.

Amazing little book - all of the topics are thoughtfully laid out, in an extremely coherent index, with succinct and visually appealing examples that most students should have no trouble following.
This truly is a guide to everyday math for people in manufacturing and business, without getting into anything abstract like antiderivatives or the central mean theorem, and should be the required math level for every person seeking admission to any post-secondary program.
I am consulting with my colleagues to make this a required reference item so we spend more time teaching engineering principles and less time belabouring what should be second nature by the time students finish high school - for both those with a technical and non-technical slant!
