Painless Writing covers pace, rythym, and writing mechanics - and so much more. To writers who want to teach yourselves, this book should be at the top of your list because it unveils the "secrets" of making text appear seamless.
Strausser conveys information in an organized and comprehensive way: he offers websites and stand-out text boxes for easy reference.
Finally, pay attention to the "before" and "after" text examples. Stausser shows a poor example, then an improved one - to reinforce the chapter lesson. Outstanding guidePainless Writing (Painless Series).

Painless Writing helped me prepare for the Writing Section of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) exam. The THEA tests your impromptu writing skills. Painless Writing explains nine techniques that improve your writing. I used these techniques and easily passed the test.
What I like most about this book are the numerous examples and tips given for each technique presented. If you are preparing for the THEA exam or writing a high school essay, Painless Writing is an excellent reference book to have!

This fabulous book gave me tons of great tips on how to write an excellent essay. I bought this book to help fine tune my college essay and was amazed at the results. My dull, explanatory essay was transformed into an exciting masterpiece that helped me get into an Ivy League school. With helpful examples and complete web addresses, "Writing Painlessly" enabled me to write a concise, grammatically correct, and connected piece. The web sites were informative and added complementary knowledge to what this book provided for me. After I showed this book to my enlgish teacher, she loved it so much that she is considering using it as a supplement for our class. If you have ever dreaded writing a school paper before, this book is for you. With fun exercises and great illustrations, this book is informative and educational. I strongly recommend that you buy this book to help with your papers, essays, and even poetry. Get to the Point provides a wonderful, practical, and useful guide to writing. I recommend it highly.
Don't bother with it.......2006-02-12
Elizabeth Danziger in her book Get to the Point attempts to offer readers a game plan to reduce stress and anxiety in an effort to write more effective memos, letters, and e-mails. Danziger is the fonder of WorkTalk, an organization dedicated to improving the communication of individuals and organizations, & she has written for popular magazines such as: Readers Digest and Family Circle. In this book, Danziger offers solid advice on how to deal with writer's block, & in some chapters, she gives visual checklists to help guide readers in the writing process.
However, readers will find the book unfocused; for example, in Chapter2 entitled: Planning your Writing, she has too many headings & subheading; one heading is: Analyze your reader before you start, which is about a half a page, then on the next page, she talks about how to connect with your reader using a 3 level formula. Yet, no where in the 3 level formula does she go into any detail, then jumps to a topic called "hot buttons" in which she offers little examples of how to determine the "hot buttons" of the writer's audience.
In addition to the lack of focus, you will find that the book is poorly organized. Some chapters have visual examples, and others do not. Chapter 6, Choose words Wisely, Chapter 7, Help for the Grammar Phobic, & Chapter 8 Mark my Punctuation should have all been combined as they deal with many of the same topics.
All in all, Danziger's book is a good example of a person that might be able to write magazine articles but does not have the ability to write a book. It's ironic that on the back of the book cover it says, "Get to the point! Is the only writing book you'll ever need" and I am saying this is the only book you should run from don't waste your money on this.

I have been employed full time as a police officer for nearly 13 years. I purchased this publication in hopes that it would provide an effective means of improving my report writing skills. To say the least, the publication is not what I was looking for.
The student workbook portion of the book contains no answer keys. Good luck on blindly grading your work.
If you are looking for a good report writing book, don't purchase this one. It is geared towards a person who has no grammical skills at all. This publication is even below the recruit level of law enforcement.

This book was not what you would expect from a book claiming to help out law enforcement officers write good reports. This is more like an elementary school work book with tear out pages. If you are looking for a book that will help you write a better narrative for police reports, this book is not going to be it. It was amusing more than it was helpful.

Not only is this book easy for ANYone to learn how to write a reasearch paper, it is especially interesting to kids because of the style of writing. It was funny! But also informative. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels uninformed on the basics of how to write a research paper.
