This book would, however, be an excellent text to use in middle school, or even high school. The skills Ballenger teaches here are important, but they should be taught much earlier than college. The format is easy to read, and much less intimidating than many other such books. It's not at all "dry" like so many texts. Ballenger makes frequent use of nice analogies to help the reader understand how certain elements of a paper will help it or harm it. He also gives examples from his students' own papers, which can be very useful. Included in the book are references to valuable Internet research sites, and appendices that cover proper MLA and APA citations. If used earlier in school, this book would be a valuable resource.

If your not an English major (and most aren't) and you want to learn research writing from source material to presentation style, this is the reference book.

As it stands, the book gives a wealth of information needed on the two primary writing styles, MLA and APA. While the book gives ample time to each of them most English teachers, unless they have something physically wrong with them, like to use MLA style which is easier for students to write in.

The book is spiral bound which makes using it easier because you can open it to a page and there is no nasty crease, and you can fold it back when your turn the page to keep it small on your desk, especially if you have alot of notes.

The only thing to be said is that, since it is primarily used as a college text book, it falls apart faster than a Ford Truck. Pages will rip out during use and the pages themselves are very thin and prone to ripping.

You more than likely don't have any choice on this book as it will be required for class, just take good car of it and it should work out good enough to get some money back when you trade it to the bookstore.

Take heart. A research paper may seem daunting, but it's a far-from-impossible project to accomplish. Turning research into writing is actually quite easy, as long as you follow a few proven techniques. And that's where Research Papers For Dummies steps in to help. Of course finding the answers in short order is sometimes the key problem and I've found The Practical Pundit to be a quick solution to gathering my material prior to sitting down to order and write.
