MLA Handbook.......2007-09-23
I loved this book. It contains all the essentials needed to write papers and do them properly. It is an excellent book!
GOOD conditon.......2007-09-18
The book was in good condition without any marks on it.
I came within 4 days that was a good shipping!!!!!
I 'll buy more stuff from this seller.
Ignore the One-star Reviews.......2007-09-15
First of all, you should ignore all the one-star reviews of this book. Those reviews criticize the MLA, not the book. The book itself is really good. One of my English professors recommended it to our class. She also said that every English major should have a copy of it. I had always used Diana Hacker's book in other classes. After she recommended it, I decided to check it out at the bookstore. After skimming through it, I decided to buy it. It was so much easier to follow than Hacker's book. I will use it in the future. Gibaldi devotes an entire chapter just to plagiarism (and how to avoid it).

The book came in great shape. I would order over and over again. I was able to get the book at a steep discount.
immeasurably helpful.......2007-08-27
My copy of the handbook is well-worn and probably older than most of the people on-line trying to buy this book right now, but I still remember how useful it was to me.
We were forced to purchase this book in high school in the early 90s. It was the format in which all papers were required to be written. While at first tedious, learning this system eventually made writing any paper really, really easy.
When I got to college, I was leaps and bounds ahead of the other students who had not learned this format. There were several occasions in which my essays were copied by the professors to use as an example of "the right way to write a paper." Because writing papers did not intimidate me, I took 4 times the required writing component courses in college.
Absolutely buy this book and refer to it often. Very rarely does it not have the answer you're looking for (that was really awesome, because nothing is more frustrating than looking at a manual for an answer it doesn't have).

Book Description
Dewey. Bellow. Strauss. Friedman. The University of Chicago has been the home of some of the most important thinkers of the modern age. But perhaps no name has been spoken with more respect than Turabian. The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Her Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, created from her years of experience with research projects across all fields, has sold more than seven million copies since it was first published in 1937.
Now, with this seventh edition, Turabian’s Manual has undergone its most extensive revision, ensuring that it will remain the most valuable handbook for writers at every level—from first-year undergraduates, to dissertation writers apprehensively submitting final manuscripts, to senior scholars who may be old hands at research and writing but less familiar with new media citation styles. Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, and the late Wayne C. Booth—the gifted team behind The Craft of Research—and the University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff combined their wide-ranging expertise to remake this classic resource. They preserve Turabian’s clear and practical advice while fully embracing the new modes of research, writing, and source citation brought about by the age of the Internet.
Booth, Colomb, and Williams significantly expand the scope of previous editions by creating a guide, generous in length and tone, to the art of research and writing. Growing out of the authors’ best-selling Craft of Research, this new section provides students with an overview of every step of the research and writing process, from formulating the right questions to reading critically to building arguments and revising drafts. This leads naturally to the second part of the Manual for Writers, which offers an authoritative overview of citation practices in scholarly writing, as well as detailed information on the two main citation styles (“notes-bibliography” and “author-date”). This section has been fully revised to reflect the recommendations of the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and to present an expanded array of source types and updated examples, including guidance on citing electronic sources.
The final section of the book treats issues of style—the details that go into making a strong paper. Here writers will find advice on a wide range of topics, including punctuation, table formatting, and use of quotations. The appendix draws together everything writers need to know about formatting research papers, theses, and dissertations and preparing them for submission. This material has been thoroughly vetted by dissertation officials at colleges and universities across the country.
This seventh edition of Turabian’s Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations is a classic reference revised for a new age. It is tailored to a new generation of writers using tools its original author could not have imagined—while retaining the clarity and authority that generations of scholars have come to associate with the name Turabian.

This book teach you how to write a paper. Very detail and useful. Highly recommend.
just what i needed.......2007-09-09
delivery was faster than expected; book arrived in pristine condition. would definitely use seller in future.
Chip off of the old block........2007-08-24
This edition of Turabian follows in a long line of excellent editions of the manual. It is very well put together and some improvements have been made including some much needed updating to abbreviations and some other matters. An excellent tool that is an absolutely essential addition to any busy student's library.
A Manual for Writers.......2007-07-29
Each major research paper must have a good introduction, hypothesis,
discussion. conclusion and provable claims. Simple questions
must be answered. i.e.
- What are the relevant questions to ask?
- What do we do?
- What direction will we select?
A good research work has practical answers, a workable hypothesis,
reasoning and evidence which supports the overall presentation.
i.e. numbers, facts, quotes and authorities
A thorough bibliography of reasonably recent sources should be
presented. This book succeeds in providing the reader with the
important requisites to doing expert research.
Nerds of the world, rejoice!.......2007-05-29
I have owned the Sixth Edition of Turabian for about five years and it has been used to the point of disintegration. I was excited about the new edition and when I received it I was elated to find that the Chicago Style Manual was included with the writer's manual. The editors have updated the manual to include citation of electronic sources which, if you have been doing any academic writing recently, has been a matter of preference. The two-color priniting makes section headings easier to find as you are leafing through the pages. The editors have included a bibliography divided into various disciplines that provides some suggestions for further research. Overall, I am enjoying using the new manual. The biggest downside is that I am having to relearn the section headings that I have grown familiar with over the past five years. Small price to pay for the added advantage of having the Chicago Style Manual at my fingertips.
Nerds, do yourselves a favor and update your Turabian manual. You won't be sorry.

Book Description
The Curious Researcher 3/e offers a fresh approach to research by reminding readers that curiosity is still the best reason for uncovering information and ideas.
This author provides ample proof that the research process, like the writing process, can be full of rewarding discoveries. Using a variety of examples from both professional writers and students, this book shows that good research and lively writing do not have to be mutually exclusive. Readers are encouraged to not only develop sound research and analytical skills, but to examine ways to bring their writing to life, even though they're writing with "facts." Though The Curious Researcher stands apart from similar texts because of its motivational qualities, it also features full explanations of the technical aspects of the research paper. MLA citation conventions are given extensive treatment, and APA standards are also explained in the Appendix.
For writers of research papers.

this was a great guide and handbook for steps on how to write/research from begining to end on a research paper.
Curious DeVry Researchers.......2004-11-18
This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a section of ENGL/135 students at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is based on the students' experiences in using Ballenger's book as a textbook during the first three weeks of the class.
We give this book an ecstatic thumbs up! Here are just a few examples of its excellencies:
* Includes good examples.
* Focuses specifically on formal research papers.
* Provides up-to-date guidelines for both internet and library research.
* Presents the reader with a step-by-step guide to writing research papers.
* Is easy to read and well formatted.
* Demystifies its subject.
* Maintains a friendly tone.
* Contains comprehensive instructions on both APA and MLA formats.
* Explains exactly how to format footnotes, citations, and references.
* Discusses ways to find a topic and includes a large list of examples.
* Helps ESL students to master the complexities of formal English writing.
Our only suggestion for improvement: we'd like to see Ballenger elaborate more on such matters as punctuation and grammar in research papers.
Overall, we have found this book to be very useful in our ENGL/135 composition class.
The Best Book on Writing Research for College ever Written.......2004-05-23
Forget all the reviews beneath that say this book isn't for college students. These stodgy English Professor types are exactly the audience who are guarenteed to hate a book that promotes and teaches, passion, curiousity, and most important, voice in student research papers. For the rest of us the Curious Researcher is a breath of fresh air. Bruce Ballenger comes at us from a writers, not a teachers point of view. He illustrates how to transform what is traditionally known in the trade as a "terminal paper" into an exploration, brimming with life, fact and literary panache.
He also manages to squeeze in all the fundamental research skills and gives teachers exercizes on how to teach them. Any teacher who sees this book as a "huge waste of time," (see review below) might want to take their cue from UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. "No one is too old to learn the fundamentals." Ballenger brilliantly teaches the fundamentals of teaching voice in non-fiction writing and demonstrates his lessons on each page throught the example of his own writing. This is the Best Book on Research Writing for College or High School ever written. Bravo Bruce!
Good for middle or high school, but not for college students.......2004-02-29
My 200-level college English class is using this as a textbook, and I've been very disappointed with it. It's simply not a college level text. While it is very user-friendly, the material it covers is all stuff a student should have learned long before college. Things like how to write a thesis statement, organize a paper, use libraries and the Internet, evaluate sources for quality, take notes, incorporate quotes into a paper, avoid plagiarism, properly cite sources, use appropriate word choice and sentence variety, and the standards of proper English conventions should all have been taught in middle school / junior high. At this level, the book has been largely useless to me, as it only covers things I already know. The exercises, too, are redundant of little help.
This book would, however, be an excellent text to use in middle school, or even high school. The skills Ballenger teaches here are important, but they should be taught much earlier than college. The format is easy to read, and much less intimidating than many other such books. It's not at all "dry" like so many texts. Ballenger makes frequent use of nice analogies to help the reader understand how certain elements of a paper will help it or harm it. He also gives examples from his students' own papers, which can be very useful. Included in the book are references to valuable Internet research sites, and appendices that cover proper MLA and APA citations. If used earlier in school, this book would be a valuable resource.
Excellent Research Text.......2003-11-08
Easy to teach from and the students say that they both learn from it and enjoy it. Most intend to keep the book to refer back to. It is my first choice for a research writing class text.

Lester & Lester, Jr's Writing Research Papers, 10th Ed........2002-12-16
I've written both MLA and APA research papers, and now I teach research writing. THIS IS THE ONE. I use a textbook (usually focusing on Argument/Rhetoric) and Lester's as the reference. It provides a wealth of solid advice, examples, outlines, guides, visuals and Web site addresses. Even though this as an English course, practically none of my students are English majors... so why teach MLA only when they'll have to use APA (social sciences) or CBE (science majors) in the not too distant future? This book addresses that and includes CMS (Humanities, Fine Arts). The appendix is EXCELLENT with the locations of sources for multiple disciplines ranging from Anthropology to Women's Studies.
If your not an English major (and most aren't) and you want to learn research writing from source material to presentation style, this is the reference book.
Writing Research Papers... -- Entertainmentopia Review.......2002-11-14
This was required as my text book for my English 102 class at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, so even if I didn't like the book I would have had to buy it.
As it stands, the book gives a wealth of information needed on the two primary writing styles, MLA and APA. While the book gives ample time to each of them most English teachers, unless they have something physically wrong with them, like to use MLA style which is easier for students to write in.
The book is spiral bound which makes using it easier because you can open it to a page and there is no nasty crease, and you can fold it back when your turn the page to keep it small on your desk, especially if you have alot of notes.
The only thing to be said is that, since it is primarily used as a college text book, it falls apart faster than a Ford Truck. Pages will rip out during use and the pages themselves are very thin and prone to ripping.
You more than likely don't have any choice on this book as it will be required for class, just take good car of it and it should work out good enough to get some money back when you trade it to the bookstore.
--Erich Becker liked English 102, and 101...
Would you like MLA or APA with that?.......2001-05-28
"Writing Research Papers: A complete Guide" is essential to those who write these papers often. The first 130 pages serve as a basic review of Information and rot Data collection mixed with organizational schemes, parallelism and whatnot. The last 250 pages discuss in detail Modern language Association (MLA) format and American Psychological Association (APA) format research papers. I personally recommend that you buy the tabbed book, while it is more expensive; it provides easy access to the very difficult APA Reference page material and data. In all honesty, the only real importance to this book is the APA materials, as MLA is intrinsically easy, and most people who pick up this book have already dealt with the basic material, which is at the front of the book. This book offers some use to the more experienced research paper writers, and exponentially more to those with less experience.
Lester in the High School.......2001-03-30
I have used Lester's works in an accelerated High School Class on Research and Writing. With very few exceptions, this book will prepare the High School Senior for Writing College Papers. It especially hones in on the MLA and APA methods of formatting papers and gives a brief description for each of the following: Chicago Turabian, Numbers and CBE forms for writing. This is a MUST book for highly motivated seniors who have a firm direction.

How to Write Research Papers
ASIN: 0764554263 |
Book Description
You're sitting at your desk in a classroom or in an airless cubicle, wondering how many minutes are left in a seemingly endless day, when suddenly your teacher or supervisor lowers the boom: She wants a research paper, complete with footnotes and a list of sources. She wants accuracy, originality, and good grammar. And – gasp! – she wants ten pages! You may be 16 years old or 60 years old, but your reaction is the same: Help!
Take heart. A research paper may seem daunting, but it's a far-from-impossible project to accomplish. A Formula That Works!.......2004-02-03
Research Papers for Dummies could easily be called "Recipes for Research" because the same process is followed in every research production. You really can't find a simpler guide on the market that does justice to the important business of writing effective and intelligible research papers.
Of course finding the answers in short order is sometimes the key problem and I've found The Practical Pundit to be a quick solution to gathering my material prior to sitting down to order and write.
