Textbook.......2007-03-03
It has a clear organization, and interesting insets. For a textbook, it intrigues. The comic inserts are a tip of the hat to culture, and everything is up-to-date.
Careful..........2007-02-24
This is an okay book for note taking and has a lot of the terms identified, but please note THIS IS NOT THE TEXT BOOK!!! I'm not sure whose fault it was but when I went to buy it it only stated the tilte and cover of the textbook. I had to go back and buy the book elsewhere. Please be careful! As for the book itself it is a thin paperback notebook with key tearms (arbitrary as well as book terms) on the left side and a blank sheet to write notes on the left. The terms are pretty well chosen and helped me on a test. If this is all you want then get it but once agian be careful.
Great bookq.......2007-02-17
I love the book. I am using it for a communication class I am taking and it is extremely helpful and easy to read. It uses today's terminology and is very up to date in regards to examples used and the way that its worded. It is a great book to learn a lot about communication that we don't necessarily learn from day to day interaction.
Misleading Title.......2007-01-19
Was very disappointed when I received 'Cram101 Textbook Outlines' to accompany "Looking Out Looking In". I thought I had ordered the book "Looking Out Looking In". Very misleading when purchasing this. I don't know if something was listed wrong or not, but when ordering I usually type in the ISB # to find the book I need. Somehow I got the Looking Out... Textbook Outlines.
not the actual book.......2007-01-19
This is the Cram101 textbook outline, not the actual book. I was unpleasantly surprised by this when I received it in the mail after paying to have it expedited. The title that amazon puts is misleading, even the other customer reviews are misleading. The only place that mentions Cram101 is the publishers review - which I found only after I got this worthless book.
Book Description
Locked inside a brain-injured head looking out at a challenging world is the premise of this extraordinary autobiography. Over My Head is an inspiring story of how one woman comes to terms with the loss of her identity and the courageous steps (and hilarious missteps) she takes while learning to rebuild her life. The author, a 45-year-old doctor and clinical professor of medicine, describes the aftermath of a brain injury eleven years ago which stripped her of her beloved profession. For years she was deprived of her intellectual companionship and the ability to handle the simplest undertakings like shopping for groceries or sorting the mail. Her progression from confusion, dysfunction, and alienation to a full, happy life is told with restraint, great style, and considerable humor.

Brain Fog Unfogged -- A Feat in Communication.......2007-07-30
Osborn does what is virtually impossible. She translates the fog of a damaged brain's function into vignettes that an undamaged brain can comprehend.
In her case, this translation is from experiences which were by definition wordless, disorganized, incomprehensible, frightening and often completely mindless to their opposites. The level of Dr. Osborn's skill in doing this may be best understood by readers who have some experience (as I do) in being with brain-injured people.
Whether one appreciates Osborn's achievement in communicating the uncommunicable is unimportant. What is valuable is that she succeeds so well in giving us insight into the "being" of at a subset of the injured.
Most of the incidents recorded in the book are too long to quote in illustration of my point. Their length is a necessary consequence of Osborn's wish to reveal her floundering. Nothing in her life was straightforward. A relatively short excerpt follows:
BEGIN EXCERPT (page 33)
"I left soon after for the bookstore, but with the force of old habit and despite Marcia's written reminder dangling from the dash, I drove directly to the hospital. And then home again. Three times.
"It was noon when I drove out of the hospital parking lot for the third time, I was determined it wouldn't happen again.
"Now, as I turned onto the main road, Marcia's note clutched in my hand, I chanted, "Book store, go to the bookstore.'
"I was still saying it thirty minutes later as I turned into our driveway.
"When I got into the house, I reread Marcia's note. Lord, the bookstore.
"Well, I would definitely get the book tomorrow. Right now, I could still do the second item on her list - water the lawn."
END EXCERPT (page 34)
Needless to say, Osborn forgot to water the lawn.
The book is also notable in illustrating the lack of insight (in regard to her limitations) that Osborn (as others) experienced for quite some time. Then, once insight was gained, she writes about her struggle with a sorrowed sense of lost self.
One incident that helped to her to understand the scope of her lost abilities (which apparently were exceptional) is recorded on pages 205-206. She was not able perform even so "simple" a cognitive exercise as making a telephone call to obtain a patient's medical information.
The book provides a generalized understanding of how rehabilitation is accomplished. This includes learning stratagems for partially replacing lost structural functions.
BEGIN EXCERPT (page 145)
"Now my notes ordered me to [begin italics] really look in the mirror. Hair combed? Teeth cleaned? Collar straight? Earrings match? Expression alert, smiling? [end italics] It began to make a difference."
END EXCERPT
For the most part, the rehab portions of the book are most useful for providing a patient's view of rehabilitation. "Over My Head" certainly does not provide an overview of rehabilitation techniques. Osborn does, however, include a concise review of the generalized deficits that rehab and therapy have to address.
By the end of the book, Osborn manages to return to teaching medicine, but in a format and in situations where she can proceed more or less by rote and under controlled circumstances. Osborn emphasizes that adult brain injury generally imposes permanent limitations upon post-trauma performance. You will not be who you were. Part of the rehabilitation process requires coming to emotional grips with whom you have become.
I recommend "Over My Head" without reservation. It will be of most value to people new to dealing with brain trauma. It also has worth for those of us who lost figurative pieces of ourselves, but do not have brain trauma to blame. The "coping with loss and less" element of the book has universal appeal.
Throughout, Osborn shines as a human being.
polished and effective.......2007-06-28
The personal stories provide insight, compassion and humor but are over-polished in editing as if being prepared for a TV movie script. This loses a sense of real human connection with the author and her true feelings. I found myself saying "too cute" to some examples. Certainly effective in communication, but nothing in this is a "real life" documentation in the form that American audiences have come to expect in contemporary autobiographies. Still, this is the best publication on the topic of mild traumatic brain injury that conveys the day-to-day effect of even the mildest cases.
Dr. Osborn is a true teacher.......2007-06-08
I think I now can be a better friend and cousin to Jack who recently suffered a brain injury. Reading these memoirs has jolted me out of denial. I am very grateful for the wisdom in this book.
a lifering of a book.......2007-05-27
This is the definitive tell-all about head trauma.
It savages every concept of so-called professionalism
in the neuro rehab "biz." And yes, let's never forget
it is a business...Like the movie The Doctor, with William
Hurt, the expert doctor's ego is the last to fall. Ms.
Osborn admits this readily, to her credit.
Claudia found out just how much caregivers and
"pros" alike sugar coat the truth with lies, supposedly
to spare our feelings, but really because they are
unable to feel and empathize emotionally with some-
thing as unbelievably tragic as the very Loss of Self.
Or at least the appearance of it!
Don't ever believe you will lose your self if you have
a head injury, mild or severe. It is only an illusion.
There is a broad, overarching hint throughout this book
that faith in the Almighty will bring you through head
injury successfully. I suggest you dare to believe it.
TBI treatment is still scandalously poor out there, folks!
Only the truth can fix it. Don't discount the power of
nootropic smart supplements, homeopathic remedies,
hyperbaric oxygen and just eating fresh herbs and
veggies out of a home garden even years after the injury.
Starting up painting or playing an instrument can open
dormant circuits especially if they were never used
to begin with, pre-trauma. Gee, now THERE's a thought,
hunh?! The human body has a phenomenal capacity to
heal itself with just a little push start.
This book is crammed full of insights about how even
though we can become victims in a flash we can also
begin to bust out of it as we get our bearings. Please,
please read books like this to your relatives in a coma
or even if NOT mute, aphasic, or with "locked in
syndrome." It will allow them to process the emotions.
They need you to do that for them!
It starts with the Will, as the author clearly demonstrates
by literally writing her way back to life.
Claudia.... You done good, Girl!
Completely accurate account on living with short-term memory loss.......2006-03-20
Ms. Osborn is a godsend to have created this book. I am a survivor of an illness which greatly affected my short-term memory, and although it is difficult for me to remember the details of the book overall, I could 100% relate to each and every sentence as I read it. If you are friend or family to one with short-term memory loss, or if you simply wish to understand life with virtually no short-term memory, read this book. You will have a completely different outlook on life once you do.
Book Description
In page after page of this self-confidence and life-enhancing bible, bestselling author Robert Ringer guides you on the most exciting and rewarding journey of your life. This #1 bestseller will clearly demonstrate how to get from where you are now to where you want to be--with friends, lovers, finances, and all other areas of your personal world.
Customer Reviews:
my favorite ringer book .......2006-12-18
This is my favorite Ringer book, with Intimidation as second. The Action! book I didn't like.
I especially like how Ringer warns of Old man murphy and his pranks (murphy's law). A good book for the unforgiving business world, puts you as always in a "realistic" mentality, which is really the only way to navigate in this Jungle.
Also, he stresses value for value friendships, which is spot on.
Good Advice Now and Always.......2006-07-28
Robert Ringer is a writer who has studied Ayn Rand and Objectivism and has always put great stock in both. He is a libertarian and a free thinker. He believes in individualism.
When I first read this book some three decades ago I didn't know about Rand or Objectivism or really much about libertarians, with the capital L or without.
So re-reading it and now knowing about all of the above I enjoyed it even more than the first time and I believe strongly in everything he wrote.
I read a reviewer who said that it is not relevant today as we work in teams. We don't all work in teams. Most of us do not. And even if we do it has nothing at all to do with the fact we must look out for ourselves first.
This is a great book for anyone. It is as good today as it was thirty years ago.
You can learn the hard way or easy way. It 's your choice.......2005-12-19
This book is such an effortless read.
Watch as the author relates the mistakes he has made in life and business.
He takes the lessons and formulates a list of rules by which to live.
I could site some examples, but I don't want to ruin it for you.
Besides, Robert Ringer deserves to get paid for his effort.
Hey! It's back in print!.......2005-11-25
@ the risk of showing my age, I read Winning... I clearly remember getting the hard cover the week Looking... came out. I laughed, I cried. That was decades ago.
I agree that he can sound a little harsh. Sometimes ya gotta use a 2x4 to get the mule's attention. He got mine as a young man. I was working on a article which had me thinking about the priciples Ringer laid out... Even with decades of time passed, I can still recall the scene where bankrupt he was driving the rented U Haul with all of what he had left and driving past the beach.
The theory of sameness and what are you offering that you cannot find in 999 other people hit a nerve. It gave me the courage to be me, and not what others wanted me to be. (Relates well to the slaps in the face for one in the sack another reviewer mentioned).
Honestly I didn't know the book was re-issued. I'm delighted I can have a link from Amazon to send readers of my article.

Solid advice from a master........2005-03-23
This book was a revelation when I read it first many years ago - in the meantime I applied some of it to my life and some I did not. Looking at my life now I can see the areas where I did not stick to his advice is where I came unstuck and created problems for myself. Ringer is a master and his perspective on reality is the most useful advice I have heard in dealing with life. If you have the remotest interest in your personal freedom, waste no more time and get yourself a copy of this excellent book.

As he did in his bestselling books The O'Reilly Factor and The No Spin Zone, TV and radio host Bill O'Reilly again blasts a host of selfish and corrupt individuals and institutions for threatening the nation's well-being--no surprise there. What is surprising is the personal tone of Who's Looking Out For You, which is as much self-help as social or political commentary. Is O'Reilly getting soft? Hardly. He still packs a punch, but this time he mixes tales of outrage with practical advice gleaned from his own experiences and mistakes. The underlying theme of the book is trust. If you can identify and associate with those that deserve your trust, he argues, you will get along well in both your personal and professional life. Among those external forces undeserving of trust, according to O'Reilly, are the media (particularly harmful to children, he warns), the legal system, and the government: "Our federal government is not good at helping real people who have real problems, and it doesn't care about the money you give it as long as that revenue train keeps chugging along," he writes. He also hammers the INS for their lax stance on illegal immigrants and the damage it has caused the country, irresponsible parents, secularists, network news executives, ideologues, and minority leaders who foster hatred in order to serve their own interests, to name just a few offenders. Though some of his advice tends toward the obvious, it is hard to argue with his emphasis on self-reliance, especially at a time when the answer to the question posed in his title seems to be "just me." It's a good bet that many readers will also add Bill O'Reilly to this list. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
From the mega-bestselling author of The O'Reilly Factor and The No Spin Zone, a no-holds-barred exposé of the people and institutions who are letting Americans down – and what we should do about it.
Bill O’Reilly is mad as hell – and he’s not going to let you take it anymore. In his most powerful and personal book yet, this media powerhouse and unstoppable truth-teller takes on those individuals and institutions in American life who are failing in their duties – big-time. In his inimitable style, mixing wit, pugnacity, and plain common sense, O’Reilly kicks butt and takes (and also names) names – from crooked corporate weasels to venal politicians to lazy and/or politically correct bureaucrats to sexually predatory priests and the Church hierarchy that protects them to a media establishment rife with political bias and economically hooked on violence and smut. At the same time that he calls the famous and powerful to account, he dares to get personal, questioning just how much our closest friends, families, and lovers do look out for us, and delivering a powerful message about personal responsibility and self-reliance in an uncertain world. He forces us to ask just how much genuine altruism is left in a society that thrives on self-indulgence and ruthless competition.
Who’s Looking Out for You? is a book that boldly confronts our worst fears and biggest problems in a post-9/11, post-corporate-meltdown world. Its sage, candid advice on regaining control and trust in these troubled times will resonate with the millions of readers and viewers who have come to believe in Bill O’Reilly as the man who speaks for them.

Sharing His Life Lessons.......2007-10-12
Television commentator Bill O'Reilly advises people to become problem solvers by developing "the ability to recognize who really cares about you as a person - and who does not." This is great advice that many never follow. He contends in this book that the government, media, church hierarchy, and big business are not looking out for ordinary Americans and hence are failing them. Along with some personal stories, this book gives good advice. This book does contain some strong language.
Five Thums Up.......2007-09-22
When Bill is on tv my mom lets me watch and I have good grades in school.Bill O'Reilly is very smart
Kids look up to Bill cause he's smart and educated and he is real funny sometimes.
Bill O'Reilly laughs at the nasty letters he gets and I like that about him to.
Reading this book was not easy but my mom helps me through it and I love Bill just like I love my mom.
Mom loves it.............2007-05-14
I bought this for my Mom....
She loves O'Reilly...
She LOVES this book!!
Another homerun for O'Reilly.......2007-03-23
Example after example of ways in which the government programs that claim to be looking out for you prove to have a negative effects. Gives the reader good insight into numberous programs that "seem" to be for our benefit, but have a dark side, not presented in the popular media. Everyone should have this information. Make you own decisions, but at least have the facts first.
Who's looking out for you?.......2007-03-09
This is a great, upfront book about what is going on around us...so many people live in such small areas that to read what Bill has to say really opens our eyes. As time changes so will some of what is in this book, but for the most part he is really with it.

Writer and Talk show host Bill O'Reilly.......2007-09-20
3 Cheers for Bill O'Reilly and this great book of his.
I bought it as soon as it came out because Bill O'Reilly is my hero!
I watch his show every night.I never missed one episode of The O'Reilly Factor and I love him.
Bill O'Reilly is not just a brilliant man with an engineering mind but he is also a man of tremendous personality.
What I like best about Bill O'Reilly is his sense of justice.
Well, I like Bill O'Reilly's sense of morality too. And also his great wit.
This book is great and I would definitly recommend it. Not just to Bill's fans but to anyone who has an interest in todays'culture, and today's national event.
Here's 3 cheers to you Mr O'Reilly !
Bill Oreilly is looking out for us.......2007-08-25
This book took me a long time to read but it was definitly worth iit.
I liked this book from begining to end and watch his program whenever I can.I think everyone should read this book.
Who's Looking Out for You?.......2007-07-27
I don't agree with Bill O'Reilly on everything nor did I with my sainted mother!!
This book does show without a doubt that O'Reilly is indeed looking out for us--Most of us.
It's a quick read with many funny historical facts and neat pictures, especially the hair on O'Reilly. LOL
We Can Look Out For Ourselves.......2007-06-20
Bill O'Reilly is a clear representation of a man that would have been better off if he was not given a mouth. This brainless sack of excrement tries to brainwash the American society to becoming right-wing sheep like O'Reilly himself, but Mr. O'Reilly fails to realize that there are smart people, and these are not the people that read this one-sided conservative rubbish.
Face it, kids and conservative sheep, this man is just a egoistic bigot who has no clue what he's talking about. I prefer a colostomy bag over this.
Who's Looking Out for You.......2007-05-14
O'Reilly's observations are quite enlightening. This could be eye opening for some. It's sad but true and we need to know this and face the facts. Who else could do it but him?

Customer Reviews:
Working life.......2004-03-29
This book tells the true story about the life a guide dog named Perry and the blind woman named Sarah that he works for. The book explains how the dog helps Sarah get around in the morning, how he helps her cross the street to get to the grocery store, and how he gets to go where other dogs aren't allowed. It describes how Sarah is able to keep up with her busy schedule of activities like playing music for local schoolchildren thanks to Perry's tireless work. The book also describes an adventure that Sarah and Perry had together when they walked from Boston to New York City. The book is not at all scary. It's a great description of working dogs and the kinds of help they can provide for disabled people, as well as the kinds of activities that disabled people engage in every day. The book has about 650 words.
Looking Out for Sarah.......2002-05-29
Glenna Lang's Looking Out for Sarah, based on a true story about Sarah Gregory Smith and her guide dog, Perry, talks about how animals can help people with disabilities do extraordinary things. In the story, the narrator tells of ways that the black lab helps his blind master complete everyday tasks like go to the market, play in the park, take a train ride, and go to the post office. Sarah and Perry also take a special adventure, hiking from Boston to New York City to show the nation the wonderful capabilities that "helper dogs for disabled people" have. Lang narrates the story beautifully, as Perry would tell it. The illustrations she uses place an even greater focus on Perry. While all of the pages are warm and colorful and all of the other characters such as Sarah and the school children wear bright clothes, Perry stands out from page to page. It is as if Lang wants the reader to be in Perry's shoes, or paws, for a day and see all of the wonderful things he does for Sarah. Overall, Looking Out for Sarah is a delightful children's book, full of big, brightly illustrated pages that can teach children of all ages the advantages of our canine companions.
You'll enjoy it as much as the kids!.......2002-01-21
Fun to read and you'll learn from it, too! Told from the dog's perspective, you'll move through a typical day in Sarah's life as her faithful Lab Perry looks out for her with charm, affection, and a sense of duty. The dog's eye view of the world lends gentle humor, like when Perry faces nearly ubiquitous temptation from crumbs and "street snacks." The author lends her own humor, too, in lines like, "although Perry was not much of a publicity hound." The illustrations are simple yet unique. While the book alludes to Sarah and Perry's 300-mile trip from Boston to NYC, I'm hoping for a sequel that will go into detail!
Wonderful for ALL ages!.......2001-12-08
What a thoughtful, lovely book this is. It is told from the point of view of a dog guide, Perry, who "looks out" for his owner Sarah, who is blind. The story is about things that Perry and Sarah do together, and it leaves the very real impression that Sarah is just like everyone else, except that she happens to be blind. They visit schools, where Sarah entertains the children by playing her guitar and singing, then allows them to pat Perry (that's his favorite part of school). Sarah tells the story of when she and Perry once walked from Boston to New York "to show the world what a guide dog can do for a blind person." Sarah and Perry go to a park for his daily play session, where he "never grew tired of bringing the ball back to Sarah. Each throw was as exciting as the last." Throughout the book, you are aware of the strong, loving bond between them. Glenna Lang's delightful illustrations are simple, uncomplicated and lovely to look at. I plan to give this book to many friends, as I treasure my own copy and look forward to introducing others to its charm.

Book Description
Jan Cavanaugh's innovative study locates Polish artists at the core of one of the primary turn-of-the-century modernist movements, the Central European Secession. Ten of the original fifty members of the Vienna Secession were Poles; they and other Polish artists participated actively in secessionist exhibitions while also forming their own group, which exhibited throughout Europe. At the same time, many of these artists were deeply involved in the struggle for their country's independence.
The Secession created an international forum to raise the standards of art and welcomed artists excluded from the salons because of their commitment to modernism. While modernism had a strong pan-European flavor, each country contributed a distinctive strain derived from its individual culture. Cavanaugh argues that after 1890 Polish artists gained new inspiration from progressive international trends, embracing modernism while seeking to sustain their own artistic and cultural autonomy. Despite its marginal status, Polish modernism, she says, was one of the strongest national movements to evolve outside the major centers of European art.
Out Looking In is the first comprehensive study in English of this significant period in Polish art. In addressing issues of national identity and consciousness, Cavanaugh essentially revises our understanding of European modernism and expertly demonstrates art history's role in reflecting broad cultural changes.
