5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!.......2006-12-27

I found this book to be fantastic!!!! The green pages at the back give many great ideas for teachers of literacy.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-03-11

I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!.......2003-03-08

I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers.......2002-11-17

This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children.

5 out of 5 stars Chock-full of good information!.......2001-09-27

We dived right into this book in our Teaching Reading credential course. This book is worth the price just for the internet resources (web sites, discussion boards, etc.) alone! Includes a great appendix which defines key terms, such as book talks, word webs, readers' theatre, etc. These are the "buzzwords" that are important for the RICA examination. A wonderful resource!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome study guide.......2007-10-10

Very comprehensive and easy to follow exam preparation guide. It's only focused on the exam so it doesn't waste your time on useless topics. I haven't taken the exam yet (will in 3 weeks though) buy I'm confident that i'll do good thanks to this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book.......2007-10-06

You'll have a better understanding of the compiler/environment and you'll pass the test. This book and questions busts your butt harder then the real test, so you'll be more then adequately prepared. This is a book you want to keep around you long after you take your test.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-17

I have passed my SCJP exam! The book was really helpful to either extend my java knowledge and helped me to passed the exam. I have spent about two months to prepare the exam and read this book about 3 times. Make sure you understand all the questions from inside out at the end of each chapter. I only used this book as my studying material (you would think that's risky, isn't it?) But it did work, although I did grabbed a few mock up exam from internet. But I didn't have much time to do those mock-ups, otherwise i may can do better in the exam. I got 88%.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Rare book!.......2007-09-11

The book is written with such clarity, precision and humor that are rarely seen in the IT education. The authors have done fantastic job at presenting complex material in an easy yet concise fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Great SCJP book!.......2007-09-06

This book has a very light language and go deep in Java language. I recommend it if you really want to be a Java 5 certified!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2007-07-19

I am about to enter my second semester of Spanish in college and I think this book is simply amazing!! I love the way that it explains Spanish words, vocabulary, and grammar in a way that is easy for people who never had Spanish before to understand the language and a refresher for people who had Spanish in high school, but had forgot some basic words, vocabulary, or concepts. Anyway, each chapter does focus on a small portion of a Spanish-speaking country, but that what makes the book interesting!! It allows each student to grasp information about each particular country, enabling each person to be exposed to each country's culture. The book cannot talk about every single little detail within a particular country. If the student is interested in learning more about the country, he/she can go on the Internet and find more information about it. Personally, I love this book and think it is an excellent source for anyone taking Spanish in college.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2006-08-29

I have been teaching with this book for 2 years and the more familiar I am with it the less I like it and the more mistakes I find on it. It was not chosen by me and I hope we'll change it soon. The textbook and workbook have plenty of mistakes even though it is a second edition.
This book claims to cover cultural elements from most Spanish speaking countries but it only sets each chapter in a different country, with very little cultural information about each place. The "encuentro cultural" section is the only cultural information in the book (apart from the video section) and most times is inaccurate or just plain boring or not interesting at all. Another problem is that many of the communication exercises are not communicative at all and not very involving for the students. Finally, I think that a book which costs more than $100 should, at least, have more pictures and color pages and it should try to make learning a language a more rewarding and fun experience.

5 out of 5 stars Quick learn!.......2007-09-17

I bought this to bone up on whatever Spanish I could before taking a trip to South America. I learned quite a bit in a short period of time, enough to get by.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the product, not the format.......2007-08-07

I share the collective view that using Pimsleur is the best first step/giant leap into learning a language. I was surprised by how much I retained after this one course and by my level of confidence in the Spanish language. In addition, I feel very enthusiastic about heading into Pimsleur Spanish 2 (con mucho gusto). While it does not offer a plethora of vocabulary, if it did, it would miss the point of Pimsleur's teaching style. As someone who took four years of French in high school, I would say, this course gives the grammatical equivalent of the first year in only a month's worth of passive learning. WOW!

That being stated, DON'T BUY THE CDs. You will only waste your money. I would suggest going on eBay and looking for Audiofy's Pimsleur Chips which plug into your laptop and even more importantly allow you to upload the program into your MP3 player. Again, WOW! Also, I spent about $300 for THE ENTIRE COURSE (I, II, III, and Plus) on eBay versus spending $200 just for Spanish I.

5 out of 5 stars this deserves 100 stars.......2007-04-08

I am at the end of this course. I can talk with people who only speak Spanish and get along at a basic level. I can discuss basic ,daily things like eating, going to the bathroom etc.
I will say that I really listen alot . I enjoy it so it does not seem like work to me.
However, the upshot is that I love, love ,love this program and I am amazed at how I can communicate.
I wanted to pass this along,as I rely on other's opinions when I decide what to buy. It saves me alot of time and money

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Gringos, Pimsleur Even Taught This Mexican-American how to speak Spanish.......2007-03-08

I have completed all of the Spanish lessons in the Pimsleur series.
I am one of those rare Latinos that did not learn Spanish from my parents. My Mexican parents felt that it would be easier to "assimilate" if I only spoke English. After going to my grandparents' s home for holidays and being the only one there that did not speak Spanish, and after having Latino strangers speak to me in Spanish and then look at me in astonishment when I told them I didn't know Spanish, I felt that it was time for me to learn how to speak my language.

The Pimsleur series has really helped me to learn Spanish. Although the course did not teach me much a great deal of vocabulary, it has taught me concepts. By teaching me concepts, I have really retained the material. Not only have I retained what I have learned, but by learning concepts, I am able to take my own thoughts and form sentences.

The only downside of this course is that the vocabulary is not the same Spanish words that are most commonly used by Mexicans in regular conversation. Pimsleur vocabulary is a little more formal. We say "mucho gusto" but Pimsleur teaches "encantado." The entire series also does not cover too much vocabulary. For learning conversational Spanish I recommend Learning Spanish Like Crazy over any other course. You will also learn a lot more vocabulary with Learning Spanish Like Crazy than you will with this entire series. LSLC is also the course that has probably me helped me the most in my journey to learn my language. After finishing the entire Pimsleur series and Learning Spanish Like Crazy Level 1 and 2, I am now doing Rosetta Stone Spanish. But if you want to grasp concepts in Spanish and retain those concepts, then Pimsleur Spanish will really help you.

3 out of 5 stars False Sense Of Security.......2007-01-20

I went through all three levels of Pimsleur and had it all down pat. Man! I was sure I would be able to go out and just jabber away like gangbusters once I was put into a situation where I had to speak. Well, the first time a native speaker started yapping at me I realized that I really had no clue what the hell I was doing and that three levels of Pimsleur were woefully inadequate. You WILL NOT be able to do anything more than communicate at a very basic level and anything approaching a "real" conversation will not be possible. For that, you will need much, much more.

4 out of 5 stars Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-09-30

This is a detailed product that has made it easier for me to learn Spanish than what I have experienced through either formal classes or other products. I would recommend it to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Powerful.......2007-07-15

This course is a powerhouse course for learning spanish. So much useful vocabulary and conversational skills are covered in this course it is mind blowing. Mark's strategy is to use variable repetition to build a solid base on which to learn spanish and that magic is working on me. Mark has a solid sense of which words, phrases, sentence structures etc. are most used by english and spanish speaking folks alike, and he pounds them home till they become second nature.
It's all here, not just sentence building, but how to say the time, the days of the week, count into the millions, talk about the weather and a million other daily kinds of stuff humans around the world talk about or use in thier language on a daily basis.
Mark has made an excellent tool for learning Spanish available, it is now up me, the learner, to decide how far and how fast I want to utilize it.
In such a short while I am speaking in rudimentary ways to my Spanish friends, and they are stunned at my progress knowing that -truly- the extent of my Spanish was "adios" before beginning this course.
I hope that helps some of you decide.
all the best

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2007-07-09

I am engaged to a Spanish man, who's entire family speaks Spanish most of the time. Using this program has really helped me get started on learning the language. Now when I am at family gatherings, I find myself understanding the gist of the conversations going on. I haven't finished the program yet, but I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Spanish and has a long commute to work or spends a lot of time on the road.

This course will only teach you to speak German, NOT to write or read. It contains only CDs to hear german, you will repeat when instructed to. That is it.

5 out of 5 stars Even the "brain challanged" can use Pimsleur.......2007-07-03

I'm more than 20% through my lessons. Based on my experience, I have ordered level 2. Due to my own unique brain wiring, I cannot report "getting it" in one session, lasting about 1/2 hour. I can say that listening to a lesson for 2-3 days, it works. More than I can say for other methods...

5 out of 5 stars easy way to learn.......2007-04-02

I've been really enjoying working my way through the series. The frequent reviews of previously covered material really do help keep it all in mind.

5 out of 5 stars The best learning language software.......2007-03-04

I'vee been learning German for about 6 months and besides Pimsleur I have used Rosetta Stone, Rocket Languages, and have taken private instruction. Obviously, private instruction is best. But this review is about software, and Pimsleur is best. But Rosetta Stone has more bells & whistles, which is perhaps why people think it is so good. But it isn't. For example, nowhere in Rosetta Stone do you actually learn how to say useful things. Nowhere do you learn how to say "Hello," "How are you, "What's your name," or even "Where's the bathroom." Instead, you will learn how to recognize a phrase such as "The woman and the boy have a ball on their heads" or "The man is under the donkey." Ridiculous!! And note I said "learn how to recognize a phrase." This is the biggest weakness and disappointment with Rosetta Stone. It really doesn't get you to talk. You see four pictures, and the speaker will say (in German) "The boy is drinking milk." Now, if you have already heard the word for "boy" (Junge) and three of the pictures have no boys, you simply click on the picture with the boy and presto, you're correct! This multiple choice way of learning is not effective for learning a language!

With Pimsleur, which is an audio only program, you hear conversations that will impart essential words, phrases and concepts. And they are repeated (and asks you to repeat) in such a fashion that it sticks. For example, it was weeks ago that it introduced "How much do I owe you?" yet I still remember it. (Wie viel shulde ich Ihnen?--No, I didn't cheat and look it up!) Pimsleur is brilliant in the way it gradually builds your knowledge and abilities. Of course, it isn't perfect as it doesn't explain the grammar. But neither does Rosetta Stone. That's why software language learning programs should be seen as supplements--supplements to classroom or private instruction. However, if you want to go exclusively with a software program--get Pimsleur. With Rosetta Stone, you won't even learn how to ask for something to eat or drink, or where the bathroom is, or even how to say Hello!

So how exactly does Pimsleur work? For a technical explanation you could Google Pimsleur and get a better answer than I could give. But here's what you get: each level (I bough the whole package: Levels 1,2,3 and a bonus 4th level) contains 30 half-hour lessons, except the bonus level, which I think has 10. You do each lesson until you feel comfortable going to the next (you are told that you do not need to master each lesson; if you feel that you can do 80% of what the lesson asks of you, it is time to move on). I think this 80% rule is smart--you don't expect yourself to be perfect, so you don't get bogged down. I found that I do each lesson twice, and on occasion have done a lesson three times. What does the lesson ask of you? The lesson typically starts with a very short conversation spoken by two Germans, then breaks it down. All the time you are repeating things--an English speaker guides you along the way, and eventually a German speaker will ask you to do things, but the English speaker is always around to clarify something new or explain a nuance. And then the lesson goes beyond the initial conversation and introduces new words, phrases, and concepts, sometime adding to what you've learned before, sometimes reinforcing what you've learned before: It mixes it up in a way that keeps your interest, so it doesn't become rote. There is a good balance between English and German spoken on the lessons, unlike Rocket Languages where there is way too much English spoken with cutesy-pie encouragement. Even the little things Pimlseur does well. For example, instead of endlessly repeating numbers in order to teach numbers, you'll learn the numbers in context, such as learning how how to say "Give me ten Euros." I found that this is far more effective than just trying to memorize words.

Of course, a software program is a supplement. Pimsleur will definitely get you speaking, and maybe even enough to get around on a trip to Germany. But if you're seriously interested in studying a language, it's not enough. For example, it's left a mystery why a word has certain endings in one context or another. It takes a textbook or a teacher to explain the German cases. (For example, my mother = meine Mutter, with my mother = mit meiner Mutter). All Pimsleur will do is have you note the different sound: meine, meiner. It doesn't explain why.

Note: I purchased a download, not the CD's.

5 out of 5 stars The best way learn German.......2007-03-01

I've been trying for years to become semi fluent in German. All of my previous efforts have gone down in flames. The Pimsleur series is fantastic. You learn the language by speaking the language. Complex grammár becomes second nature. I'm halfway through the Second part of the course. I've been working on it during my commute to work. Makes the commute almost bearable. I'll be going to Berlin in a couple of weeks. Feel as though I'll be able to communicate reasonably well.

You won't get a huge vocabulary using the Pimsleur method. But, what you do learn will become part of you. You will know how to use the words in complex sentences. You will know how to use similar words as you learn them. You will learn practical words that can be used in everyday conversations.

The series of lessons is not cheap. However, 'the Pinsleur series is worth every penny. Buy it!

Book Description

With Pimsleur Language Programs you don't just study a language, you learn it -- the same way you mastered English! And because the technique relies on interactive spoken language training, the Pimsleur Language Programs are totally audio -- no book is needed!

The Pimsleur programs provide a method of self-practice with an expert teacher and native speakers in lessons specially designed to work with the way the mind naturally acquires language information. The various components of language -- vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar -- are all learned together without rote memorization and drills. Using a unique method of memory recall developed by renowned linguist, Dr. Paul Pimsleur, the programs teach listeners to combine words and phrases to express themselves the way native speakers do. By listening and responding to thirty minute recorded lessons, students easily and effectively achieve spoken proficiency.

No other language program or school is as quick, convenient, and effective as the Pimsleur Language Programs.

The Comprehensive Program is the ultimate in spoken language learning. For those who want to become proficient in the language of their choice, the Comprehensive programs go beyond the Basic Programs to offer spoken-language fluency. Using the same simple method of interactive self-practice with native speakers, these comprehensive programs provide a complete language learning course. The Comprehensive Program is available in a wide variety of languages and runs through three levels (thirty lessons each) in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. At the end of a full Comprehensive Program listeners will be conducting complete conversations and be well on their way to mastering the language. The Comprehensive Programs are all available on cassettes and are also on CD in the six languages in which we offer the Basic Program on CD.

4 out of 5 stars About the accent.......2007-08-17

I am huge fan of Pimsleur cds and have used them in German, Italian, and Greek, as well as Mandarin. I agree with all of the generally favorable reviews here but I will add my experience of the accent. I spent a week in Beijing using Mandarin in taxis, and most especially each morning to get breakfast in neighborhood shops where no English was spoken (I *highly* recommend doing this for the food, the experience, the language practice, and the chance to see how local people actually approach their food).

Not one person I met used the extreme Beijing accent I had learned from Pimsleur. I *always* got better results when I tried to use the more moderate accent from the (Shanghai based) Chinesepod.

For example, no one said "ee dee-ar" for "a little bit." Everyone said "ee dee-an." And this was in Beijing.

In hindsight I would still approach Mandarin by mostly using Pimsleur. But the accent caused me trouble until I caught on that it was a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Mandarin I.......2007-05-20

I work along side native born Mandarin journalists every day. I have tried many CDs and have taken basic Mandarin classes too. The Pimsleur CDs are the best hands down. Sure they are a bit expensive but spend the money. Otherwise, you will spend much more on others that are not easy or practical. Check your local library and get a feel for what's out there first. These are designed for beginners and are very useful in everyday conversation. After practcing with these discs, I have been told that my pronunciation is perfect. And that came from visitors from Beijing. If you want to learn basic Mandarin, buy these discs. You will not be dissapointed. Xie Xie Ni Pimsleur.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-08

Chinese is tough. This is by far the best method I have used to attempt to actually speak it. And one develops a perfect accent using this! If you must learn to speak Chinese, get this or get the one with only the first half of the lessons as it costs a whole lot less (under $50). You will amaze your Chinese friends when you blurt out a sentence without an accent (or, to be more correct, with a Beijing accent.)

4 out of 5 stars Great but one major flaw.......2007-04-19

This is a wonderful course and I won't repeat what many people have already said... but what makes this course very difficult to follow is that they didn't add the pinyin and Chinese characters in a book. A book following the dialogue would have made it so much easier to follow and understand.
If you have access to a chinese speaker who is willing to sit with you through the entire course and help you write down the dialogues then Pimsleur's Mandarin will help you very much. Otherwise you will have to struggle more than is necessary to get the most out of these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn Chinese.......2007-02-08

This is an excellent way to begin speaking Chinese, which isn't as formidable as you might think! My Chinese speaking friend, however, is amused that they teach the Beijing accent, which includes the 'r' sound at the end of words. This sound is not part of the standardized forms of Mandarin. He says that while people across China will understand the dialect you have learned, people in other parts of the country will say some words differently -- making it hard for you to understand them.

5 out of 5 stars Nice program.......2007-10-04

I am currently in the middle of Pimsleur Italian II and am thrilled with all I have learned. I spent a lot of time and money in college German classes and cannot say or understand much of anything in German. In comparison, Pimsleur seems cheap.

I have a long commute to work, and studying Italian has made the drive much more enjoyable. I also think I am a better and less stressed-out driver because I have something to focus on in the car other than what other drivers are doing.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it's good to get a grammar book and other supplemental materials. Also, I check out Yahoo Italia and other Italian websites to help work on my reading skills. It's really exciting to feel like I am finally learning a foreign language!

3 out of 5 stars Too Little Vocabulary, Too Rigid. Better Courses Available........2007-09-20

Pimsleur Italian is typical of other Pimsleur courses I have purchased.
Expensive, rigid, and for the money, you get very little vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Program for all ages and talents!.......2007-09-10

My friend and I went in on buying this together since we'll both be traveling to Italy next summer (if you can find someone to split the cost with, be sure to do it!)
I've always had a "knack" for learning languages (this is my fourth language) and I found the program to move at a comfortable speed with lots of reinforcements (which is very important!)
My friend had more trepidations about learning a language, she's got a speech impediment and flunked her French class in high school. But she found the program to be very helpful too! She had to do a few of the lessons over before moving on, but at the end of the 30 lessons, WE BOTH TEST INTO 2nd YEAR ITALIAN! We took the free aptitude test at the local college and we both know as much as a student after a full year of college-level Italian.
Her 12 year old son recently started the program, and he's doing well with it (probably better than either of us actually haha). It's keeping his interest, and he's able to have simple conversations and make up his own sentences after only 6 lessons. So, the program isn't just for grown-ups.
It's true that the course is only audio, but after 15 lessons or so, look up the spelling rules for Italian and you'll see that spelling and reading is a breeze since it's so phonetic.
We're saving up to get the next two levels now and looking forward to being able to competently converse with Italians this summer.

4 out of 5 stars fun.......2007-07-24

Obviously oriented toward men on the prowl, this is nevertheless a fun/ny way to learn a language. It is focused on learning conversation, such as beginning with "hello." Many of the scenarios are focused on a man picking-up a woman, sometimes aggressively/annoyingly so, but stops short of asking her to go to bed. In the scenarios, at least the woman frequently holds her own. I wouldn't consider this as an only source in learning a language, but it does help you to communicate quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Best Language Method I've Ever Used.......2007-04-18

I am a language enthusiast, and I have shelves full of various language CDs, cassettes, and books. This is my first experience with the Pimsleur product (the price had kept me away from it until now). This is, by far, the best language product that I have ever used, and I consider my money very well spent. The pace of the lessons is perfect -- not too fast, but not too boring; you can very reasonably progress from one lesson to the next a day at a time.

For learning Italian, my wife and I tried a community college class and two other audio CD products. None of them approached the quality and effectiveness of these CDs (we actually stopped going to the community college class after a couple classes so we could focus on the CDs). My wife is not by any stretch a language enthusiast like I am, and she found the other classes and CDs to be extremely boring. However, she is really enjoying and learning a lot with the Pimsleur Italian I series. We have Italian II on order now. :-)

This is an excellent CD containing the test bank of test items that accompany Kaplan and Saccuzzo's Psychological Testing: Principles, Applications, and Issues 6th edition for instructors.

I have used this CD to create tests for my course. The CD contains all of the test items from the test bank, walks you through sampling items to use on exams, and creates exams for you all in just a few steps. Its claims to help you create tests in 5 minutes and I can endorse that.

It is a must for course instructors.

I have read many books in the psychology field, and I thought this book did an excellent job of presenting clear and concise information on psychological testing. The book focused on the various testing techniques that are used in the psychology field. It raised important issues around how to appropriately apply testing and why we use them. i recommend this book to professionals in the field or to anyine who may have a curiosity about psychological testing in general. It's a real eye opener!Your interest won't fade out.

Book Description

In the course of more than sixty years spent covering Washington politics, Helen Thomas has witnessed a raft of fundamental changes in the way news is gathered and reported. Gone are the days of frequent firsthand contact with the president. Now, the press sees the president only at tightly controlled and orchestrated press conferences. In addition, Thomas sees a growing -- and alarming -- reluctance among reporters to question government spokesmen and probe for the truth. The result has been a wholesale failure by journalists to fulfill what is arguably their most vital role in contemporary American life -- to be the watchdogs of democracy. Today's journalists, according to Thomas, have become subdued, compromised lapdogs.

Here, the legendary journalist and bestselling author delivers a hard-hitting manifesto on the precipitous decline in the quality and ethics of political reportage -- and issues a clarion call for change. Thomas confronts some of the most significant issues of the day, including the jailing of reporters, the conservative swing in television news coverage, and the administration's increased insistence on "managed" news. But she is most emphatic about reporters' failure to adequately question President George W. Bush and White House spokesmen about the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, and on subjects ranging from homeland security to the economy. This, she insists, was a dire lapse.

Drawing on her peerless knowledge of journalism, Washington politics, and nine presidential administrations, as well as frank interviews with leading journalists past and present, Thomas provides readers with a rich historical perspective on the roots of American journalism, the circumstances attending the rise and fall of its golden age, and the nature and consequences of its current shortcomings. The result is a powerful, eye-opening discourse on the state of political reportage -- as well as a welcome and inspiring demand for meaningful and lasting reform.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING BOOK.......2007-08-23

Helen Thomas has covered the White House since JFK and her insight into how the media has failed in the recent years to cover the White House and be the Watchdogs of Democracy is "Right on Point." There are very few "Real" Journalists like hardworking Helen Thomas around anymore!!

5 out of 5 stars What's going on in Washington DC?.......2007-05-13

The lady in the red suit scores again with this cogent comment on the Washington press corps. Ms. Thomas, who pitches hardball questions during press conferences if she is allowed to do so, has very coherently and successfully produced a well-reasoned text about why the press corps failed the American people by not investigating the shenanigans surrounding the present administration. This is a necessary read for journalism students and probably for those interested history and political science.

2 out of 5 stars A misleading title on a journalistic memoir.......2007-04-26

This book sorely disappointed me for two reasons. I strongly agree with the thesis of the title, that the media largely abandoned their important duty as watchdogs of democracy in the run-up to the War in Iraq, HOWEVER, this issue amounts to a grand total of ONE chapter in her entire book. The rest is a bunch of anecdotes tied loosely together. In fact, it reads more like an anthology than a unified work.

The second thing that disappointed me was also something of a shock: Helen Thomas, Grand Dame, Dean of the Washington Press Corps, is a lousy writer! I am serious. I read on average one or two political/nonfiction books a month, and this is one of the most poorly written I have read yet. Some of the books I have read are by "regular" people, some by pundits, and some by politicians. Nearly all of them write in a more interesting and engaging style than Mrs. Thomas. Her tone is often conversational at best, and her stories seem to be told as much to discuss presidents' interactions with the media as to tell you what an interesting career she has had.

I could not in good faith give it one star. It isn't horrible. It is just extremely disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars rambling, disjointed, biasd, personal, fun.......2007-02-08

This is a rambling, disjointed, biased, personal account
of what should be an important public issue. The title
has a question mark, and the subtitle identifies the
culprit and makes an accusation. So how does "Watchdogs
of Democracy? The Waning Washington Press Corps and How
It Has Failed the Public" measure up? Not very well on
the subject, but better as a collection of snippets.

The foreword drones on and on for ten pages. Chapter 1
tells us Journalism is an honorable profession in
spite of Jayson Blair and a few others.
Chapter 2 mentions several scandals uncovered by the
press. Chapter 3 has anecdotes about presidents with
the press. Chapter 4 is about press secretaries.
Chapter 5 is about spinning the news.
Chapter 6 is about leakers and whistle blowers.
Chapter 7 admits that the news business is a business.
Chapter 8 complains about the FCC. Chapter 9 is
the subject of the book, the press as lapdogs.
Chapter 10 covers war correspondents, Iraq wars,
and Vietnam. Chapter 11 covers her choice of the
greatest American journalists. There is over 11
pages of closely spaced, double column index,
but no references.

Thomas seems to think there is little in Washington
except the White House. The other branches, and the
bureaus and departments are seldom mentioned.

Some Republicans will be bothered by some of her
attacks, and some Democrats will be delighted.
There are attacks, and both Democrats and Republicans
are the targets, perhaps in equal numbers, but they
are treated differently. Democrats tend to get the
passive voice and quirky little adjectives.
Republicans tend to get the active voice and
malicious adjectives. Bush 43 gets the worst
treatment.

Still, it is an entertaining book. The only time
I was tempted to put it down was Thomas quoting
herself giving a speech disguised as a question at
a White House Press Conference.

1 out of 5 stars Neither focused nor organized.......2007-01-14

This book was clearly written for profit. Many sections of the book are only weakly connected back to the main theme and nowhere does Helen Thomas make her case-in-chief directly. Instead, the reader is treated to a series of vignettes which all too frequently bear only a tenuous relationship to one another and which make no effort to maintain continuity. While each chapter has a reasonably strong cohesion (though those boundaries frequently intersect in a way which would make any Venn diagram lover proud), they work together not as a fine Swiss watch, but instead more like a Rube Goldberg machine.
There is one theme which appears time-and-again: the idea that an objective and vigorous free press is a necessary part of democracy. This point is made consistently throughout the book from a cornucopia of different, albeit predicable, angles, and is artfully shown both implicitly and explicitly through excellent and enjoyable anecdotes accumulated during the author's sixty years as a White House correspondent. Unfortunately for the reader, her anecdotes frequently seem to be included for their value as self-platitudes rather than for intrinsic value or thematic attenuation. Also unfortunate is the inconvenient truth that Helen Thomas is no longer the type of reporter she praises, but the type she opines against: an opinion columnist.
There are certainly gems in the rough scattered throughout the 201 pages, but the author's tendency both to ramble and babble makes them difficult to find and detracts from their value. With regard to Thomas' periodic attempts a historical organization, her comments at the conclusion of chapter four are revealing: "There were other press secretaries and other spokespersons. I have mentioned only a few who stand out in my mind, for better or worse." Indeed, it seems she deemed fit to simply write down a train of thought as it occurred to her in the shower; that is to say, while not devoid of organization, the linking up of subjects is tenuous at best. Perhaps the most interesting and enjoyable aspect of Helen Thomas' writing style in this book is her robust use of vocabulary, which includes a scattering of excellent words on every page (some of which I even had to look up).
